Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67bb8f7b7caea2.11888691.jpg[/img] War is too important to be left to the generals. What if we left it to the toys? [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerIn *Toy Battle,* two players will take turns placing Troops on a quirky battlefield. The first player to place a Troop on their opponent's *HQ* wins the game! Alternatively, the first player to reach the required number of *medals* wins the game!2maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerEach player has a [red]*rack*[/red] of Troops next to the main board. Our opponent's is at the top, and ours is at the bottom. As the first player, we started with 3 Troops in our rack. Our opponent started with 4.3maintitlebar_content000red_troops_container 1 blue_troops_container 1
Nekonyancer[blue]On our turn, we can perform one of the following actions:[/blue] *• Draw 2 Troops.* or *• Place 1 Troop.* Let's start with the first option! *Click on [blue]"Draw 2 Troops!"[/blue]*4btn_draw_2010btn_draw_2 2
NekonyancerGood! We drew two Troops from our [red]*Reserve*[/red] and placed them on our rack, which can hold up to *8* Troops at a time. As you can see, there are *15* Troops left in our reserve. [blue]Now our opponent will take their turn![/blue]1blue_deck67b69d579555f00blue_deck 1
Nekonyancer[red]Our opponent drew two Troops as well.[/red] Before we take our next turn, let's take a closer look at our Troops. Each one has a number above it, indicating its strength. Most Troops also have a *special effect icon* in the bottom-right corner that we can trigger when the Troop is played. [green][tip] If you hover over a Troop, you can read what the effect is![/green]1troop_2267b69d5b5f51900
Nekonyancer*Skully* is pathetically weak, but its effect lets us draw another two Troops. That sounds pretty good to me! *Select Skully!*2troop_1967b69d5b5f51910
NekonyancerNext, we have to tell BGA where we want to place it. We can only place on bases from which we can trace a [red]continuous line of occupied bases back to our *HQ.*[/red] Since we don't have any Troops on the board yet, our only options are the bases immediately adjacent to our [red]*HQ.*[/red] *Place Skully to the right of our HQ!*1base_castle_1267b69d5ceeff410base_castle_1 1 base_castle_12 11
NekonyancerNext, we can use Skully's ability. *Click on [blue]"Draw 2 Troops!"[/blue]*1btn_draw_267b69d5dc565610btn_draw_2 2
NekonyancerNext turn! Wow, we've drawn three unicorn Troops, all of whom are named *Star.* Let's place one of them! *Select the rightmost Star.*1troop_467b69d69619cf10
NekonyancerAgain, we can place on any base from which we can trace a *continuous line* of occupied bases back to our HQ. Thanks to the Troop we placed last turn (Skully), that line reaches farther now! *Place Star here!*1base_castle_1467b69d772924610
NekonyancerStar's ability is similar to Skully's. It lets us draw a single Troop. *Click on [blue]"Draw 1 Troop!"[/blue]*1btn_draw_167b69d782f14010btn_draw_1 2
NekonyancerOur opponent played a [red]*Cap'n.*[/red] Its special ability lets them immediately place another Troop!1base_castle_2367b69d8219ea700
NekonyancerThey played an [red]*XB-42,*[/red] which lets them randomly discard a Troop from *our* rack!1base_castle_1967b69d893b9d000
Nekonyancer[green]Rest in peace, Star #2![/green] By the way, there are *three* of each kind of Troop in our reserve, but four random Troops were removed at the beginning of the game.1troop_1267b69d8b01b6500
Nekonyancer[red]Our Troops are close enough to start fighting now![/red] In Toy Battle, combat is simulated by placing Troops *on top of each other.* We can only place a Troop on top of an enemy Troop if ours has *more strength* (a higher number).2base_castle_1967b69d8b01b6500
Nekonyancer*Select our last Star!*3troop_767b69d8b01b6510
NekonyancerStar has *6* strength. The opponent's XB-42 has only *5!* [red]*Attack!*[/red]1base_castle_1967b69d965c8b710base_castle_19 1
NekonyancerGreat! Note that our opponent's XB-42 was *not* removed from the board. It's still there, peeking out from under our Star. Whenever Troops are stacked up like this, only the *top* Troop affects the board.1base_castle_1967b69d977021500
NekonyancerDon't forget about Star's ability! *Click [blue]here[/blue] to draw another Troop!*2btn_draw_167b69d977021510btn_draw_1 2
NekonyancerBy the way, we can also place Troops on top of *our own* Troops if we want. In that case, we don't have to worry about strength requirements. [blue]You probably won't want to do that often though.[/blue] :)1base_castle_1967b69d9be386f00
NekonyancerOur opponent placed a [red]*Kwak*[/red] on our Star. Kwak is a *joker* and can be placed on top of any Troop. However, any Troop can be placed on top of Kwak - even a lowly Skully!1base_castle_1967b69da83a0cd00base_castle_19 1
NekonyancerLet's respond with *Jumbo.* It doesn't have much strength, but it has a powerful offensive effect! *Select Jumbo!*2troop_567b69da83a0cd10
NekonyancerHmm... we could place Jumbo on our opponent's [red]*Kwak,*[/red] but I have something else I want to show you.1base_castle_1967b69dae3c7c500base_castle_19 1
NekonyancerThis is a [red]*special base.*[/red] When a player places a Troop on one, they can trigger a special effect! Each battlefield features a different kind of special base.2base_castle_1667b69dae3c7c500base_castle_16 1
NekonyancerSpecial Bases on this battlefield - *Castle Field* - allow players to recover their previously placed Troops so they can be played again! *Place our Jumbo [red]here![/red]*3base_castle_1667b69dae3c7c510base_castle_16 1
NekonyancerGood! Before we trigger the special base's effect, we need to trigger Jumbo's, which is to remove an opponent's Troop from an adjacent space. *Remove our opponent's [red]Kwak![/red]*1base_castle_1967b69db0295d310base_castle_19 1
Nekonyancer*Great!* By removing our opponent's Kwak, we uncovered our [blue]*Star*[/blue] and regained control of the base!1base_castle_1967b69db63034000base_castle_12 1 base_castle_19 2
Nekonyancer[blue]Next, we'll trigger the special base's effect... but on second thought, I don't think we should recover any of our Troops.[/blue] It might seem worth it to recover [red]*Skully*[/red] so we can play it again. But if we do, we will break our chain of occupied spaces! We'll have to spend a turn filling that space again before we can continue our conquest of the board!2base_castle_1667b69db63034000base_castle_12 1
NekonyancerLet's just pass instead. *Click on [red]"Pass!"[/red]*3btn_pass67b69db63034010btn_pass 1
Nekonyancer[red]By the way, something else happened on our turn. Did you notice?[/red] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67bb8f7cb5be43.74472435.jpg[/img] There used to be a *Medal* on this field, but it disappeared.1troop_1267b69dc559b9d00
NekonyancerWhen we placed Jumbo and used its ability, we established control over every base surrounding this field. [blue]Whenever a player does that, they automatically claim the Medals on it![/blue]2base_castle_1667b69dc559b9d00
NekonyancerThe [red]*Medal*[/red] now occupies the first slot on our score track. At the bottom of the track, it shows how many Medals we need to win on this particular battlefield. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67bb8f7ddcae04.21356512.jpg[/img] [green]We need 7![/green]3goodie_1167b69dc559b9d00goodie_11 1
NekonyancerIf we want to pursue a *Medal victory,* we'll probably want to start placing Troops on the other path as well. If we control all of [red]*these bases,*[/red] we'll gain another 3 Medals!4base_castle_1467b69dc559b9d00base_castle_11 1 base_castle_12 1 base_castle_13 1 base_castle_14 1 base_castle_18 1
NekonyancerAlternatively, we can try and push our opponent all the way back to [red]*their HQ.*[/red] If we place a Troop on their HQ, we'll win! If find yourself evenly matched with an opponent, and neither of you are able to win, eventually one player will be *unable to take a turn.* In that case, the game will end, and whoever has [green]more Medals[/green] will win.5base_castle_4167b69dc559b9d00base_castle_41 1
Nekonyancer[blue]Okay, that's everything![/blue] After you've played a game or two on this board (Castle Field) I strongly suggest toggling a different board in the *lobby options!* Again, each one features a different kind of special base, enabling unique strategies!6maintitlebar_content67b69dc559b9d00
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Toy Battle!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! Big thank yous go out to... • *Paolo Mori* and *Alessandro Zucchini* for designing this game. • *Repos Production* for publishing. • *tchobello* and *MathCT* for bringing it to BGA. Have fun! :D7maintitlebar_content67b69dc559b9d00
