Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67836fb3ef2eb8.39218221.jpg[/img] Your expedition to discover the treasures of the island was going great, but now the island is sinking, and some ancient mythical monsters are trying to make sure you go down with it! [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerIn *Survive the Island,* you manage a team of 10 *Adventurers* fleeing a sinking island (20 in a 2-player game). Each Adventurer carries a treasure, whose value is indicated on its base. You need to get as many of them to safety as you can! At the end of the game, [green]whoever has the most points wins![/green]2maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerAt the beginning of the game, players will take turns placing their ten Adventurers on the island. Only one Adventurer can be placed on each tile (except in a 5-player game). [red]Players can look at the point value on their own adventurers' bases as they do this, but they are not allowed to check again later![/red]3maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerThat's the *default* way to play, but it takes forever. For this replay, I told BGA to *automatically* place everyone's Adventurers. It used an algorithm to try and place them as fairly as possible, but there's only so much it can do. [green]Anyway, with Adventurer placement taken care of, we'll move on to raft placement![/green]4maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerEach player gets 2 *rafts* that they can place anywhere around the rim of the island. Obviously, we should place them near our own meeples. *Click [red]here[/red] to place a raft!*5maphex_selector_9_5010maphex_selector_9_5 1
NekonyancerGreat! [blue]Now the next player will place a raft...[/blue]1maintitlebar_content67734f6a741a800
NekonyancerOur turn again! *Place our second raft [red]here![/red]*1maphex_selector_9_967734f7dca0fa10maphex_selector_9_9 1
NekonyancerOkay, now we're ready to start playing! [blue]Each turn is divided into three phases:[/blue] *- Action.* *- Rising Waters.* *- Creatures.* We'll start with the Action phase!1maintitlebar_content67734f950c46e00
NekonyancerIn each *Action* phase, we can perform three 1-space movements, divided however we like among Adventurers and/or rafts we control. I think we should prioritize Adventurers that are on *beach tiles -* the sand-colored ones. [blue]You'll see why soon.[/blue] *Select [red]this Adventurer.[/red] Move them one space up-right, onto the raft!*2maintitlebar_content67734f950c46e10maphex_gfx_9_6 6
NekonyancerOkay, that Adventurer is safe for now. We have one more Adventurer on a beach tile. *Select [red]this Adventurer.[/red] Move them two spaces up-left, again onto a raft!*1maphex_gfx_3_767734fa41be4f10maphex_gfx_3_7 6
NekonyancerOkay, that's it for our three 1-space movements! *Click on [red]"End Action phase!"[/red]*1btn_nomove67734fa80661b10btn_nomove 1
NekonyancerNext is the *Rising Waters* phase. In this phase, we must pick up an island tile of the *lowest elevation level* available. There are three levels - beach, forest, and mountain. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67836fb54fe467.32564004.jpg[/img] So, we'll start out by removing all the beaches, then all the forests, and finally the mountains!1maintitlebar_content67734fb1a444500
NekonyancerIf there happens to be an Adventurer on the tile we pick up, they'll get dropped into the water! (This is why we prioritized our Adventurers on beaches.) On the *back* of the tile we pick up, we'll either find an [red]*effect*[/red] or an [green]*ability.*[/green]2maintitlebar_content67734fb1a444500
NekonyancerIf it's an [red]*effect,*[/red] we'll do whatever it indicates, then discard it. If it's an [green]*ability,*[/green] we'll keep the tile for later!3maphex_selector_4_967734fb1a444500
NekonyancerOrange has a bunch of Adventurers on beach tiles. Sure would be awful if something bad happened to them... *Select [red]this space.[/red][green] Confirm![/green]*4maphex_selector_7_467734fb1a444510maphex_selector_7_4 6
Nekonyancer[red]Hahaha, enjoy your swim, Orange![/red] Next, let's see what's on the *back* of the tile...1maphex_tokenholder_7_467734fba6518200
NekonyancerIt's an [red]*effect!*[/red] Specifically, a [green]*shark*[/green] will spawn at this location!2maphex_selector_7_467734fba6518800
NekonyancerSharks will automatically gobble up any swimmers that they share a space with. Adventurers on rafts don't count as swimmers. 🦈🦈[red]Bye, Orange![/red] 🦈🦈3maphex_tokenholder_7_467734fba652d600
NekonyancerThat's it for the *Rising Waters* phase. Next is the *Creatures* phase! BGA will roll a die for us. The sides of the die are [green]shark / shark /[/green][red] sea serpent / sea serpent /[/red][blue] kaiju / kaiju.[/blue] We'll then have to select a monster on the board of the type we rolled and move it up to 2 spaces.4maphex_selector_7_467734fba656e500
NekonyancerWe rolled a [green]*shark!*[/green] Sharks can move up to 2 spaces. There's only one shark on the board right now. *Select the shark. Move it one space up-left and one space left, onto [red]that raft![/red] [green]Confirm![/green]*5d_dice_167734fba67d8910maphex_tokenholder_5_3 1 d_dicetray 3
Nekonyancer[red]Too bad sharks can't destroy rafts![/red] That's it for the Creature phase and our turn. Now our opponents will go!1maphex_tokenholder_5_367734fe73c05300
NekonyancerOrange moved three Adventurers onto different rafts (Action Phase). Then they picked up a tile over here, dunking one of Blue's Adventurers (Waters Rising Phase). Fortunately for Blue, the tile had an [red]*effect*[/red] that spawned a new raft!1token_4467734ffd84eab00
NekonyancerLastly, BGA rolled the die for them (Creature Phase). They rolled a [blue]*Kaiju,*[/blue] but there aren't any Kaiju on the board yet! [blue]That's it for their turn. Next is Blue![/blue]2d_dice_167734ffd84eab00
NekonyancerBlue loaded up some Adventurers, then picked up [red]*this tile,*[/red] dunking an Orange Adventurer. Since they didn't reveal what the tile was, it must have been an [green]*Ability!*[/green] It went into their inventory. How lucky for them.1maphex_tokenholder_4_967735047150ef00maphex_tokenholder_4_9 6
NekonyancerOrange's Adventurer is now *swimming!* Each Adventurer can only swim *1 tile* per turn. If that one tile of movement happens to get them back to land, they can still walk in the same turn.2token_9167735047150ef00
Nekonyancer[red]It's our turn again![/red] Since we don't have any more adventurers on dangerous beach tiles, let's load up a raft and set sail! *Move [red]this Adventurer[/red] to the raft!*3maphex_gfx_8_567735047150ef10maphex_gfx_8_5 6
NekonyancerThe raft has room for one more! *Move [red]this adventurer[/red] to the raft!*1maphex_gfx_10_66773505b67bdf10maphex_gfx_10_6 6
Nekonyancer[red]Time to set sail![/red] We can spend movement on a raft if we have at least 1 Adventurer on it and no one else has 2 Adventurers on it (they would outnumber us).1maphex_tokenholder_9_56773505ea0aea00
Nekonyancer*1. Select our raft!* BGA now wants to know if we want to move the whole raft or just a specific Adventurer on it. *2. Select the whole raft.* It's the leftmost button. *3. Move the raft 1 space up-right.*2token_526773505ea0aea10
Nekonyancer[blue]Off we go![/blue] We'll reach the landmass in the corner next turn. For each corner, there are [red]*two spaces*[/red] from which we can disembark. *Click on [red]"End Action phase"[/red] at the top!*1token_59677350657d1ec10btn_nomove 1 maphex_tokenholder_1_3 6 maphex_tokenholder_1_11 6 maphex_tokenholder_2_2 6 maphex_tokenholder_2_12 6 maphex_tokenholder_11_2 6 maphex_tokenholder_11_3 6 maphex_tokenholder_11_11 6 maphex_tokenholder_11_12 6
NekonyancerTime for Rising Waters! *Select [blue]this space![/blue] [green]Confirm![/green]*1maphex_selector_6_4677350682255710maphex_selector_6_4 2
Nekonyancer[green]Wow, another shark.[/green] Sure are a lot of sharks around here! Next, the *Creature Phase!*1maphex_selector_6_467735076dc7a600
Nekonyancer[red]We rolled a Sea Serpent![/red] As you've no doubt already noticed, there's 1 Serpent in each corner of the board and a 5th in the center. We can select and move any of them *1 space* (they aren't as fast as sharks). Sea Serpents cannot go on land though, so the one in the middle is stuck for now.2d_dice_167735076e05d800
NekonyancerThis serpent is sitting on one of the tiles from which we can disembark. I'm tempted to move it away, but doing so would also move it closer to *us.* If we moved it closer, and one of our opponents rolled a Sea Serpent as well, they'd be able to move onto us! [red]Sea Serpents automatically destroy all Adventurers *AND* rafts that they share a space with![/red]3maphex_tokenholder_11_367735076e05d800
NekonyancerLet's leave the top-right serpent where it is for now. *Select the one in the bottom-left quadrant. Move it one space to the right. [green]Confirm.[/green]*4token_9267735076e05d810
NekonyancerOrange loaded more Adventurers onto two different rafts. On each one, his Adventurers now *outnumber* Blue. That means only Orange can control those rafts (for now).1maphex_tokenholder_6_3677350bc25fb200
NekonyancerOrange picked up a tile, and it spawned a [blue]*Kaiju!*[/blue] Kaiju can move 1-2 spaces on land *OR* in water. Whenever a Kaiju moves onto a space with another living thing (be it human, shark, serpent or another Kaiju), it pushes that thing to an adjacent space of the active player's choice. [red]Kaiju will destroy any rafts they come across.[/red]1token_41677350c2f181500
NekonyancerWe're almost done with the tutorial. Just one more turn. *Select our raft. Move it two spaces up-right, to the [red]dock![/red]*1token_52677350fe2993310maphex_tokenholder_11_2 6
NekonyancerWith our last move, let's disembark! *Select the raft. Click on the second button from the left. Move the Adventurer to [green]safety![/green]*1token_5267735107885ed10maphex_tokenholder_12_2 3
Nekonyancer*Excellent!* At the end of the game, we'll score *1-5* points for each rescued Adventurer, but again, you're not allowed to check how much each one is worth. The only time you can check is at the beginning, during the initial Adventurer placement (unless you tell BGA to place them all for you). [red]*End our action phase!*[/red]1maphex_tokenholder_12_167735112e008a10btn_nomove 1
NekonyancerRising Waters! *Select [blue]this tile![/blue] [green]Confirm![/green]*1maphex_selector_5_967735119a067110maphex_selector_5_9 2
NekonyancerWow! We found our first [green]*ability!*[/green] Again, abilities will stay in our inventory until we want to use them. This particular one is Repellent. You can *hover* over it for details! It's definitely handy, but it won't help our seafaring adventurers against that serpent. =/1token_336773511e54f0a00
Nekonyancer[blue]Okay, I think you've seen enough![/blue] Once we finish removing all the beach tiles, we'll move on to forest tiles, then mountain tiles. Four of the mountain tiles have an *erupting volcano* on the back. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67836fb653e866.59602878.jpg[/img]2gameaction_status_wrap6773511e54f0a00
NekonyancerWhen a volcano is discovered, it is placed back where it was. Adventurers and/or Kaiju on the space do not survive. When three volcanoes are discovered *OR* when there are no more Adventurers left on the board, the game ends, and BGA will tell each player how much their rescued Adventurers ended up being worth. [green]Whoever has the most points wins![/green]3gameaction_status_wrap6773511e54f0a00
NekonyancerOne last thing to mention. There are a bunch of *map control buttons* in the top-right corner. If you need help with them, hover over the *"?"*4maphex_tokenholder_12_36773511e54f0a00
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Survive the Island!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! Big thank yous go out to... • *Julian Courtland-Smith* for designing this game. • *Zygomatic* for publishing. • *darhf* for bringing it to BGA. Have fun! :D5gameaction_status_wrap6773511e54f0a00
