villager[tip] [green]This tutorial is best experienced on a full screen desktop browser at 1080p.[/green] Welcome to 7 Wonders, one of the most popular *card drafting* board games in the world. This tutorial will teach you the basics on how to play this wonderful game, full of interesting choices, and dripping with theme.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000page-title aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWMxYmEzMDNmOS43NjA5NDUxNi5qcGc=/319/-19
villagerYou have been tasked to build the mighty ancient wonder, Colossus of Rhodes. That gigantic statue, with its flaming beacon guiding ships to the port of Rhodes, needs Resources and Time. You have to complete this mammoth task over *3 Ages*, and you only have one *starting raw material*, *Ore*, to begin with.2player_board_wonder_89458949000player_board_wrap_89458949 8
villager*In Age 1*, you must build an engine with 7 cards randomly dealt to you and other players. The ancient world used many basic raw materials like *Wood, Clay, Stone, and Ore*. And also advanced to manufactured goods like *Glass, Paper, and Cloth*. Your ancient city, Rhodes, has started you with a permanent supply of Ore, that you can use to build other *structures* (ie cards) in your city.3board_base_89458949000board_base_89458949 8
villager[tip] Note the symbol of Ore, so you can spot this cost when choosing cards from your hand.4board_base_89458949000board_base_89458949 8
villagerNotice that your Wonder also has 2 STAGES (highlighted here). [red]*Stage 1 needs 3 Stone, and Stage 2 needs 4 Ore.*[/red] Hover over them to see their detailed requirements and benefits awarded when completed. Let's get our city started up to produce these resources before time (3 Ages) runs out.5board_wonder_step_1_89458949000board_wonder_step_1_89458949 8 board_wonder_step_2_89458949 8
villagerThis is your hand of 7 structures that you can build in this turn. When built, structures give benefits like resources, military strength, and technology. [tip] Structures are organized by color to easily identify them.7player_hand_wrap000player_hand_wrap 8 player_hand_wrap aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWMxYmQxNTY3My4wMTkzMDMzMi5qcGc=/724/-61
villagerLet's quickly look at how to interpret a card: *At the top is the name of the card, and below it is the benefit it provides.* For example, the first card, a Clay Pool, provides your city a permanent supply of the raw material [red]Clay[/red], WHEN PLAYED. Try hovering over each card quickly to see a bigger version of the card image, along with its benefit, and COST.8player_hand_wrap000player_hand_wrap 8
villagerBGA helpfully tells you which cards are FREE to play without any COST, by putting a [green]Green checkbox[/green] in the corner... because either the card itself has no cost, or because you already have created the needed resources from your previous plays. Wow! 6 of the 7 cards in your hand are currently free to play.9player_hand_wrap000card_status_icon_2 8 card_status_icon_3 8 card_status_icon_4 8 card_status_icon_6 8 card_status_icon_13 8 card_status_icon_16 8
villagerObviously you are unable to play the red military card Stockade (indicated by the [red]red cross[/red] in the corner), as its cost needs Wood, which neither you nor your neighbors produce. We'll look at this concept a little later...10player_hand_wrap000card_status_icon_19 11
villagerFor this tutorial, let's play the card titled Barracks. It's cost is Ore, which you already have as the "starting resource" in your Wonder board... hence its FREE! It's benefit is to award you 1 [red]*Military Shield*[/red]. I will explain its benefit at the *end of the Age*. Every city needs an army to protect it from its neighbors (in this case, the players on your left and right).11pagemaintitletext000card_status_icon_13 8
villagerHover over the Barracks card. You will see 3 options. Select and click the FIRST green arrow which lets you play a card on your Wonder / tableau. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec1be97a27.25516197.jpg[/img]1pagemaintitletext6189d0ec75fa010card_status_icon_13 16
villagerYou have successfully added a Military Shield to your city.1board_item_136189d0f1b214b00board_item_13 8
villagerNotice you now have 6 cards in your hand... where did your original cards go?? This is a *drafting game*... every turn you choose a card, and then pass your remaining cards to your neighboring player.. In Age 1, it goes to the next player in turn order, Yewni. And you received cards from the player BurnsideBH. In the next Age, the rotation reverses. Keep this in mind.2card_rotation_wrap6189d0f1b214b00handrotation 1 player_hand_wrap 8
villagerWhy does this matter? Because to win the game of 7 Wonders, not only do you have to build up your Wonder to score awesome *Victory Points (VPs)*, but prevent others from making theirs too easily: so don't pass them good cards if you can help it. Your current VPs (next to the Star), along with other players, are shown here. I will explain how they are computed at the end of the tutorial.3avatar_894589496189d0f1b214b00board_item_26 8 board_base_89767611 8 player_board_89458949 8 icon_point_89767611 8 icon_point_90606758 8 icon_point_89862076 8
villagerFor this turn, let's play the Clay Pit structure card, that has the nice benefit of another Ore, OR Clay. It has a cost of 1 coin. *Note every player also started the game with a supply of 3 coins* (see top right corner of your Wonder board). [tip] notice that the basic Raw Materials cards are Brown in color.4player_hand_wrap6189d0f1b214b00card_status_icon_18 8 ttcoin89458949 12
villagerJust like before, hover over the Clay Pit card that you want to play, and choose the first arrow to play to your tableau.5player_hand_wrap6189d0f1b214b10card_status_icon_18 16
villagerTo repeat, as this is a drafting game, you passed your remaining 5 cards to the next player Yewni, and received fresh 5 cards from BurnsideBH. 4 of these 5 cards are free to play. The reason you can't play Scriptorium (green card on the far right), is because it needs the resource Paper, and currently you have none. 1player_hand_wrap6189d10e6559300player_hand_wrap 8
villagerUnfortunately neither of your neighbors, Yewni and BurnsideBH, are producing Paper. If they were, you could have purchased it for 2 coins per resource. Maybe we'll use that option in a future turn...2player_hand_wrap6189d10e6559300card_status_icon_20 13
villagerFor this turn, let's play the red military card, Guard Tower. It's free to play as we are already producing the required resource, Clay, in our city (from the previous turn. Same as before... hover over the Guard Tower card, and choose the first arrow to play it on your tableau.3player_hand_wrap6189d10e6559310card_status_icon_9 16 board_item_18 12
villagerLet's build the Lumber Yard this turn. It's free to play (no cost on the card), and it provides valuable Wood as a benefit, that can be used to pay for building other structures in future turns. Hover over card and click the first green arrow...1player_hand_wrap6189d127cb20610card_status_icon_14 16
villagerHopefully you get the idea now on how to build structures / play cards to your tableau. Click Continue to build the Loom, which grants the excellent benefit of producing the manufactured good, Cloth, which is a key resource for more advanced cards in the next Age.1player_hand_wrap6189d12c79d1700card_status_icon_16 16
villagerTime to look at a new kind of [blue]Structure card[/blue]... Blue cards like Pawnshop, are Civilian Structures, and award valuable Victory Points (the value enclosed within the wreaths) to help you win the game. As before, this too is a free to play card, as it has no cost! Hover over it and choose the first arrow to play to your tableau.1player_board_name_894589496189d1732e3bb11card_status_icon_22 16
villagerThe last card in the Age is not played and is discarded. Hence, *each Age ends after its 6th turn!*1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6189d181d0d3f00player_hand_wrap 6
villagerAt the end of every Age, it's time to resolve Military Conflicts with your neighbors, to whom you were passing your cards / receiving cards... We now compare our military strength, represented by the number of shields, to the players on the left and right.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6189d181d178b00
villagerWe have 2 Shields!3player_board_wrap_894589496189d181d178b01board_item_13 12 board_item_9 11
villagerAnd the player to the right, Yewni, has only 1 Shield. As we have more Military strength than the player to the right, we win an awesome 1 VP. (it gets better and bigger in the next 2 Ages). 4player_board_wrap_897676116189d181d178b00board_item_19 11
villagerThere's our 1 VP!5victorystock_89458949_item_16189d181d198b00victorystock_89458949_item_1 3
villager...while the losing player gets -1 VP. Again, remember this is the scoring for Military Conflicts in the 1st Age. When there is a tie, no VPs are given or lost.6victorystock_89767611_item_16189d181d198b00victorystock_89767611_item_1 1 victorystock_90606758_item_1 6
villagerWe also WON the Military Conflict against the player on the left, BurnsideBH. And that gave us another sweet 1 VP. :)7victorystock_89458949_item_26189d181d1b7d00victorystock_89458949_item_2 8
villagerBGA will now auto-score all other players Military Conflicts (is it a Wonder that this game supports upto 7 players?) Playing all 7 Wonders!!) :) Time for Age 2 to begin, and to choose even better structures and better rewards. The Colossus awaits!!8archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6189d181d1b7d00
villagerOur first "battle" with Yewni, player on the right, results in 1 Victory Point (or VP) as we have 2 Shields, and she has only 1 Shield.12war_mask_back_897676116189d181d198b00
villagerJust like Age 1, all players are dealt 7 cards from a special deck of Age 2 cards... which are cooler and more expensive to build! And just like before, BGA speeds up your thinking process by highlighting which cards are free to play with a [green]Green checkbox[green]1player_hand_wrap6189d18e0da0800player_hand_wrap 6
villagerAfter drafting your card, your remaining cards will now be given to the players on your Left, ie BurnsideBH.2card_rotation_wrap6189d18e0da0800
villagerThis hand also sees some Green cards, which represent [green]Scientific structures[/green]... and have a very interesting scoring mechanism based on collecting sets. (hover over card to see details) One of the Green cards, Dispensary, is prompting that it needs 2 Coins to play, even though the cost is 2 Ore + 1 Glass. Why 2 Coins?3player_hand_wrap6189d18e0da0800card_status_icon_46 12
villagerThat's because our city is already producing 2 Ore, highlighted in the green boxes below. But we also need Glass. We don't make any...4player_board_wrap_894589496189d18e0da0800board_item_18 8 board_base_89458949 8
villagerBut wonder of wonders, our warring neighbor player is producing Glass: we could put down our bickering spears and do some commerce. Your neighboring players will happily (and they don't have a choice) sell you any resource they produce for 2 Coins. You get the needed good, and build your favorite structure... but you also make them richer. :)5board_item_256189d18e0da0800board_item_25 8
villagerMoney is important in this game: not only do you need to buy goods from neighboring players, but you also need it sometimes to buy cards. We will soon see that another playing option for you on your turn, is to DISCARD a structure card from your hand instead of building it, and getting 3 Coins from the bank (we all get poor sometimes).6ttcoin894589496189d18e0da0800ttcoin89458949 8
villagerLet's build a Brickyard this turn, for the low low cost of 1 Coin, which we have. [tip] I noticed that our neighboring players aren't producing any Clay... they will have to pay me money to buy some. Plus it might come in useful to pay for other more powerful Structure cards coming up in this Age and the next. Click Continue to add the Brickyard to your tableau.7player_hand_wrap6189d18e0da0800card_status_icon_51 16
villagerLet's play the Bazaar, a yellow Commercial structure card, to our growing Wonder tableau, by hovering over the card, and selecting the first arrow. It's free to play: there is no cost on the card, and it comes with an interesting scoring benefit. When played, the player will get 2 coins for EVERY Grey card built in the player's city, and in the two neighboring cities (highlighted with arrows)1player_board_wrap_894589496189d1a943e1310card_status_icon_29 16 board_item_16 11 board_item_4 11 board_item_25 11
villagerWhoa... sweet 6 more coins from the 3 Grey cards, added to our treasury.1ttcoin894589496189d1a9e9d6000ttcoin89458949 8
villagerTime to focus on increasing our Military strength: our neighbor to the right, Yewni, has already amassed 3 Shields. Let's not be weaker than them and lose those precious VPs. There's a free to play red Military structure, Training Ground, as we are already producing the cost of 2 Ore + 1 Wood in our cool city of Rhodes. Plus, it lets me build the Circus for FREEE in future!2board_item_406189d1a9e9d6010card_status_icon_30 16 board_item_19 8 board_item_40 8
villagerYou asked if I said FREEE cards in the future? Totally! For example, hover over the card *Stables*. If you had already built the Apothecary in your city, then you can CHAIN the Stables for FREEEE! So watch out for those sweet combos when selecting cards from your hand to build. Right now *Stables* has the needed resources from your city, hence you could have built it if you wished.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6189d1b332b3500
villagerTime to build a Quarry in our city! It only costs *1 Coin*, and it gives us *2 valuable Stones* that we need to build the *First Stage* of our Wonder. Completing stages awards benefits... in our case, we get: *1 Military Shield + 3 Coins + 3 VP*!!2player_hand_wrap6189d1b332b3510card_status_icon_31 16
villagerOur First Stage of the Wonder has a yellow checkbox with the number 2 next to it. Which means we can build it by spending 2 Coins. Why 2 Coins? Think about it; answer in the next comment...1board_wonder_step_1_894589496189d1e4955e400card_status_icon_89458949_1 12
villagerThat's right! You have now figured out the core rules and mechanics of 7 Wonders! As the First Stage requires 3 Stones, but we are only making 2 Stones. We need to buy 1 Stone from a neighbor if one of them is producing it... and Yewni on the right does make it!2board_item_316189d1e4955e400board_item_31 8 board_item_54 12
villagerIt's time to build our *First Stage* of our Wonder, and get those cool rewards. How do you build a Stage you ask? Super easy! You take one of your hand cards and place it under the Stage to indicate it has been built. Let's use the Sawmill card for this job. Hover over it, and select the SECOND arrow shown in the list of options. It looks like: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec1c1fe159.68048736.jpg[/img] And then pay 2 Gold coins to Yewni.1avatar_894589496189d1ef3773b10card_status_icon_39 16
villagerNice!! You racked up Military strength, Coins, and VPs... right before the 2nd Age is about to end. At this point you know almost everything there is to know to play 7 Wonders, but I would encourage you to play through the entire tutorial till the end of the game to understand all the mechanics and scoring rules.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6189d1f5496da00
villagerLet's build the Aqueduct next: it costs 2 Coins as you are missing a Stone and need to buy it from a neighbor, but heck, you are rich and can afford to throw them a few Coins to build another Civilian structure for a fat 5 VPs! [tip] Also again note... if you had constructed the Baths in a previous turn on your city, then the Aqueduct would have been free.2player_hand_wrap6189d1f5496da10card_status_icon_37 16
villager6 cards played from the 2nd Age... signaling the end of the Age. As as humans often do in history, its time for Military Conflicts. The scoring is better in Age 2. It's 3 VP to the winner, and -1 VP to the loser. Which one are you? Compare your Shields with your neighbors... Answer in the next comment...1player_board_wrap_894589496189d215316b300board_item_13 8 board_item_9 8 board_item_30 8
villagerSweeeet! You won both your battles, and scored another 6 VP!! Start of Age 3, or as the Romans say, Age III. The Final Age! 7 fresh and wonderful cards to be drafted. Check out the high costs and big rewards!1victorystock_89458949_item_36189d21fdd35600victorystock_89458949_item_3 8 victorystock_89458949_item_4 8
villagerAlso note that drafting rotation has gone back to turn order again.2handrotation6189d21fdd35600
villager!!! Where are all the brown and grey cards? There are none of them in Age III. Since we only have 2 ores and our neighbors only have a total of 1, that means we will never have the 4 ores necessary to finish our Colosseum. Fortunately for us, while building our Wonder is good, *it is not necessary to win the game*.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6189d21fdd35600
villagerLet's build the Town Hall next for another fat 6 VP, and donate 2 Coins to the neighbor for their Glass.4player_hand_wrap6189d21fdd35600
villagerAnother nice VP card on offer: the Senate. Remember the game is all about getting the most VP. Scoring them from cards directly is one way... you can also buy Purple Guild cards that have some cool End Game VP scoring opportunities. Hover over the 2 on offer, but for now, click Continue to quickly add the Senate also to your city for 2 Coins.1player_hand_wrap6189d23e5587200
villagerLet's get the Craftsmens Guild now (free to play as we have all the resources)... hover over the card to see that the reward, as shown by the iconography (which is a skill you will soon memorize) is to get 2 VP for Grey card played by your neighbors... which gives us 4 VP right now. remember Purple Guild cards are end game scoring benefits.1player_hand_wrap6189d24f0700400
villagerLet's get the Gardens next for 5 more VP!!1player_hand_wrap6189d2678313e00
villagerand now the Haven for more VP and Coins for every Brown resource card in your City.1player_hand_wrap6189d282e2a2a00
villagerWow look at that treasury of 11 Coins. Like I said before, its really useful in the game as it can help you buy those resources you are not producing, but your neighbors are... Also at the end of the game, every 3 Coins is equal to 1 VP, rounding down, ie leftover coins score no points. Example: The current 11 coins will score 3 points (11 / 3)... and the remaining 2 coins do not score any points. 1player_hand_wrap6189d2959eb5a00ttcoin89458949 12
villagerAnd I'm sure you have noticed it by now, but the 3rd playable option on any structure card in your hand, is to discard it for 3 coins, like so: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ec1c479ad8.91029492.jpg[/img]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6189d2959eb5a00
villagerBut with 11 Coins, i think we can afford to buy another Purple Guild card, the Shipowners Guild, for more VP points based on the count of Brown, Grey, and Purple cards. Looking at my Wonder board, that's 4 Brown cards, 1 Grey card, and 2 Purple Cards (including this one, as it's an end game scoring condition)... ie 7 more VP!! Let's do it!! It's also the last 6th card for this Age, which means...3player_hand_wrap6189d2959eb5a00
villagerYou have reached end game scoring, and the end of this long tutorial! Hope you noticed that there's Military Conflicts at the end of the 3rd Age too. and the victor gets 5 VP for every neighboring battle. And -1 VP as the loser. Congratulations for winning your first game too :) Definitely a close game by the look of the score board. Check out the 43 points scored by your neighbor BurnsideBH, who got a lot of Science points (a very popular scoring strategy).1player_score_894589496189d2a7ae44400
villagerHere's what you learnt! 1) Win the game by getting the most VP 2) VP is scored from : - building specific cards in your city, and from your Wonder too sometimes. - End of Age Military conflicts 3) But those VP cards need resources to build. So on your turn, choose the card that benefits your needs... while denying the opponent. Draft carefully while noting the drafting rotation. 2player_score_894589496189d2a7ae44400
