Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67d841ededd8e5.47026437.jpg[/img] A job is easy to find in the Caribbean, but many are discontent with low wages and cruel working conditions. "Why not then," you think, "enjoy a life of wealth and adventure on the high seas?" [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerIn *Pirates of Maracaibo,* players will buy ship improvements, explore an island, and plunder treasure as they sail across the Caribbean from left to right. Players can gain points in many ways, including constructing residences, completing quests, burying treasure, and even influencing the market value of their treasure. After three voyages to Maracaibo (rounds), the game will end, and [green]whoever has the most points wins![/green]2maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerAt the beginning of the game, each player is dealt [blue]*two quests.*[/blue] They must keep one and discard the other. You probably already have them on your screen, but if you don't, *scroll down* until you find them.4maintitlebar_content000pom-quests92143487 2
NekonyancerMost quests feature a single goal that can be completed to a lesser or greater degree. For example, this quest will be worth *3/6* points at the end of the game if we've acquired *2/3* ship cards by then.5pom-card100000
NekonyancerShip cards are pretty expensive, so I'm not sure I'm "on board" with this quest. Let's go with the other one, which requires us to cross rivers on an island. *Select the Ship quest. Then click on [blue]"Discard selected"[/blue] at the top!* Oops, an error. Don't worry, it will work in a real game. Just *continue* instead.6pom-card100000
Nekonyancer[red]Okay, now we're ready to start the game![/red] You should be looking at a series of blue cards now. They make up the Caribbean sea and all the islands in it.1maintitlebar_content67b00c247682a00
NekonyancerEach player's ship starts off the left edge of the Caribbean. On our turn, we must sail across *1-3* adjacent spaces (cards) and trigger actions wherever we stop. The space we stop on must be at least one column of cards closer to [red]*Maracaibo,*[/red] which is at the right edge of the Caribbean.2maintitlebar_content67b00c247682a00pom-space90 1 pom-space91 1
NekonyancerLet's set sail! *Select this space. Then click on [blue]"Set sail"[/blue] at the top!*3pom-card1367b00c247682a10pom-card13 16
NekonyancerGreat! [blue]There are three kinds of cards:[/blue] - Improvement - Residence - Location The card we stopped on is an *Improvement card.* 1pom-card1367b00c6a2fbd100
NekonyancerWhenever we stop on an Improvement card, we can either... • spend doubloons (coins) to buy it. OR • gain 5 doubloons.2pom-card1367b00c6a2fbd100
NekonyancerAs the first player, we started the game with 10 doubloons (the 2nd/3rd/4th players start with 11/12/13). In the top-left corner of this card, it shows that it costs 4, so we can easily afford it. *Click on [blue]"Acquire Emerald Trader"[/blue] at the top!*3pom-card1367b00c6a2fbd110
NekonyancerGreat! We bought the card, removing it from the board, but our ship stayed in place. That's it for our turn! *Click on [red]"End turn"[/red] at the top!*1pom-space567b00c701151c10pom-buttonEndTurn 1
NekonyancerWhen we ended our turn, a [red]*new card*[/red] was drawn to replace the card we bought! The new card was drawn from a different deck (Tier II) than the ones BGA used to originally construct the Caribbean. 1pom-card5167b00c72b3d9900pom-card51 1
Nekonyancer[blue]Our opponent will now set sail![/blue] They can sail *through* our space with no penalty. But if they stop *on* our space, they'll have to [red]pay us 1 doubloon![/red]2pom-card5167b00c72b3d9900
Nekonyancer[blue]Okay, next turn! Again, we must move 1-3 spaces.[/blue] Note that the spaces directly above our current location are not available. That's because moving to those spaces would not bring us closer to [red]*Maracaibo!*[/red]1maintitlebar_content67b00c84af9dd00pom-card18 13 pom-card80 13 pom-space90 1 pom-space91 1
NekonyancerBut before we move again, we should take a closer look at the card we bought last turn. Do you see the tabs at the top of the screen? You might have to *scroll up* a little. Click on [blue]*this tab*[/blue] (the one with your name on it) to bring up our ship. If you scroll down a bit afterward, you'll find the card in our [red]*Improvements*[/red] box.2pom-tab-9214348767b00c84af9dd00pom-tab-92143487 2 pom-played92143487 1
NekonyancerThe card we bought is an [green]*Emerald Trader.*[/green] It has a victory point value in the top-right corner (4) and is classified as *crew* in the bottom-right corner. This classification is sometimes relevant for quests or other things. The card also has two *scrolls* on it - one red and one green.3pom-card1367b00c84af9dd00pom-card13 3
NekonyancerScrolls come in 4 colors: Parchment: an instant bonus. [red]Red:[/red] a bonus that activates during specific actions. [green]Green:[/green] Income at the end of each round. *Black:* a bonus that activates at the end of the game.4pom-card1367b00c84af9dd00
NekonyancerThe Emerald Trader's [red]red scroll[/red] grants +2 power whenever we *raid* for emeralds. The [green]green scroll[/green] in the bottom-left corner grants 2 doubloons of Income at the end of each round. [tip] You can *hover* over the card for more details.5pom-card1367b00c84af9dd00
NekonyancerSo how does raiding work? Well, it- *"Land Ho!"* Avast! All hands on deck! Click on the [red]*Caribbean*[/red] tab. Then *continue.*6pom-tab-map67b00c84af9dd00pom-tab-map 1
NekonyancerWe're approaching Tobago, which is a *Location card!* Whenever we visit a Location card, we can upgrade a cannon on our ship. In addition, the parchment-colored scroll on Tobago indicates an instant bonus or action. If you hover over it, you'll see that it's a *raid* action! *Select Tobago. Then [blue]"Set sail!"[/blue]*7pom-card6167b00c84af9dd10
NekonyancerBGA should have brought you back to our ship so we can *upgrade* one of our cannons! Each one is labeled with a scroll. If you can't interpret a scroll, just hover over the corresponding cannon to see what it does.1player_name_9214348767b00c902990400
NekonyancerNote that our options are restricted to the bow of our ship. To unlock the next group of upgrades, we'll need to get at least [blue]*2*[/blue] of the basic ones. The group afterward will unlock after [blue]*8*[/blue] total upgrades, and the last one after 12. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67f73ef9bf1740.24188052.jpg[/img]2pom-upgrade92143487-n767b00c902990400
NekonyancerSince we're about to trigger a *raiding* action, let's upgrade the bottom-left cannon, which increases our raiding power by +1. *Select this cannon. Then [blue]"Confirm"[/blue] at the top!*3pom-upgrade92143487-n467b00c902990410
Nekonyancer[red]The raid has begun![/red] Whenever we raid, BGA rolls [blue]*three dice,*[/blue] representing the three kinds of treasure we can raid for: emeralds, gold, and pearls. We are allowed to *reroll* all the dice *once.* The value on each die indicates our raiding *power.*1pom-diceDish67b00c988681400pom-diceDish 2
NekonyancerIf we chose to raid for gold, we would only get 1 power from the die, augmented by 1 from our ship upgrade. BGA already did the math. As you can see at the top, we have an option to [red]*raid for gold with 2 power.*[/red]2pom-die1-inner-side1-inner-pips67b00c988681400pom-buttonRaid2 1
NekonyancerBGA also accounted for our Emerald Trader, which grants 2 power whenever we [green]*raid for emeralds.*[/green] 5 (die) + 2 (trader) + 1 (ship upgrade) = 8 total power! Wow! *Click on [green]this button[/green] to raid for emeralds! Then continue.*3maintitlebar_content67b00c988681400pom-buttonRaid1 3
NekonyancerIf you clicked like I asked you to, you should now be able to see all the various ways we can spend our power: [red]• 2 power to get 3 doubloons.[/red] [blue]• 5 power to get 1 emerald.[/blue] [green]• 1 power to get 1 victory point.[/green] These are the only 3 options we get at the beginning of the game. We'll unlock some other options later.4maintitlebar_content67b00c988681400pom-buttonRaid402 1 pom-buttonRaid403 2 pom-buttonRaid404 3
NekonyancerWe can gain as many of these bonuses as we can afford, but we can only gain each bonus once per raid. We have just enough power to get all of them! *Start by using 2 power to gain [red]3 doubloons![/red]*5pom-buttonRaid40267b00c988681410pom-buttonRaid402 1
Nekonyancer*Next, raid an [blue]emerald[/blue] for 5 power!*1pom-buttonRaid40367b00ca41230110pom-buttonRaid403 2
Nekonyancer*Finally, raid [green]1 victory point[/green] for 1 power.*1pom-buttonRaid40467b00ca68be4410pom-buttonRaid404 3
NekonyancerThat was a very productive raid! *Click on [red]"End raid."[/red]*1pom-buttonEndRaid67b00ca998c6b10pom-buttonEndRaid 1
Nekonyancer*Great job so far!* You're still looking at our ship, right? Just under our ship, you'll find a [red]*mysterious shore*[/red] where we keep all our treasures. 1maintitlebar_content67b00cace873f00pom-bury92143487 1
NekonyancerHere's the [green]*emerald*[/green] we raided! If you *hover* over it, you'll see that it was actually placed on a bonus space that gave us 2 points when we filled it.2pom-bury92143487-bonus1-cube67b00cace873f00pom-bury92143487-bonus1-cube 3
NekonyancerThere are several more bonus spaces underground, but to use them, we'll have to *bury* our emeralds. [green]We'll go over that soon![/green]3pom-bury92143487-slot367b00cace873f00
NekonyancerNext, I need to show you where our emerald came from. *Click on the [blue]Caribbean[/blue] tab. Then continue.*4pom-tab-map67b00cace873f00pom-tab-map 2
NekonyancerWhenever a player gains emeralds, gold, or pearls, they are taken from the corresponding [red]*Treasure Island.*[/red] The number of treasure cubes on the island shows how valuable that particular treasure is.5pom-map-isle167b00cace873f00pom-map-isle1 1 pom-map-isle2 1 pom-map-isle3 1
NekonyancerEach emerald is worth 3 points right now. But if anyone acquires another one, the value of *all* emeralds will drop to 2!6pom-map-isle167b00cace873f00
Nekonyancer[blue]Next turn![/blue] To bury our ill-gotten gains, we need to trigger a shovel action, and Montserrat happens to provide one! *Sail to Montserrat!*1pom-card6767b00cd12b89c10
NekonyancerLike Tobago, Montserrat is a *Location* card, so the first thing we have to do is *upgrade* a cannon. The bottom-right cannon will increase the value of our *Explore* actions, which I haven't gotten to yet. *Upgrade the bottom-right cannon!*1pom-upgrade92143487-n667b00cfe606e710
NekonyancerHope you brought your shovel! *1.* Click on [blue]*"Bury 2 OR 5📀!"*[/blue] *2.* Click on [blue]*"Bury 2!"*[/blue]1maintitlebar_content67b00dc26321e10pom-buttonChooseOne 2
NekonyancerWhen we bury a treasure, we'll trigger a bonus from whichever space we use for the burial. This burial slot will let us place another emerald on the emerald Treasure Island, increasing the value of each one! In addition, each buried treasure is worth an extra 2 points at the end of the game. *Select the leftmost slot! Then confirm!*1pom-bury92143487-slot167b00e15b5ced10
Nekonyancer*Great!* By burying the emerald, we emptied this [red]*bonus space!*[/red] We'll gain the bonus *again* the next time we gain an emerald!1pom-bury92143487-bonus167b00e1d6d4a500pom-bury92143487-bonus1 1
NekonyancerMontserrat provided two shovel actions, but we don't have anything else to bury. Too bad. [red]*End our turn!*[/red]2pom-buttonEndTurn67b00e1d6d4a510pom-buttonEndTurn 1
Nekonyancer[blue]Next turn![/blue] If we sail to *Trinidad,* we can make another daring raid for emeralds! Not only that, BGA randomly placed a *tile* on Trinidad at the beginning of the game. It indicates that whenever a player visits Trinidad, another emerald will be added to the emerald island! [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67d841efb9bbb3.43964941.jpg[/img]1pom-card6067b00e3e1c86100
NekonyancerIf we were playing a real game, we'd probably head there, but this is a tutorial. I need to show you how the *Explore* action works! *Sail to Bonaire instead!*2pom-card6367b00e3e1c86110pom-card63 16
Nekonyancer[blue]But first, as usual, we need to upgrade a cannon.[/blue] The top-right one will let us place a *Black Market* tile on any Location card that doesn't already have one. *Select the top-right cannon. Then [blue]confirm![/blue]*1pom-upgrade92143487-n1067b00e507b30d10
NekonyancerEach player started the game with an [red]*identical set of 5 Black Market tiles.*[/red] Whenever we place one, we'll trigger its effect. We'll trigger it again whenever we visit the Location card we place it on!1pom-tabContent-92143487-blackMarket67b00e5c1ce7000pom-tabContent-92143487-blackMarket 1
NekonyancerNone of them are particularly useful to us right now, but *this one* will come in handy later. It will give us a free shovel action whenever we activate it! *Select the tile with a shovel. [blue]Confirm![/blue]* We should probably place it on a Location we already plan on visiting... like *Trinidad* (the Location just above the one we sailed to). *Select Trinidad. [blue]Confirm![/blue]*2pom-market1x367b00e5c1ce7010pom-space21 16
NekonyancerOkay, time for the *Explore* action, courtesy of the Bonaire Location card. You should be able to see the *Exploration board* right now. Each player starts the game with an [red]*Explorer*[/red] in the bottom-left corner of the board.1maintitlebar_content67b00e811693100pom-figure92143487 1 pom-figure11941354 1
NekonyancerWhenever we trigger such an action, we can advance our Explorer along the track. The specific action we're using grants *3* spaces of movement, but our ship upgrade increased it to *4.* We'll gain a bonus from whichever space we stop on.2pom-explore-space767b00e811693100pom-figure11941354 1
NekonyancerThere's another thing to consider: the four [blue]*rivers*[/blue] cutting through the track. At the end of the game, we'll score *4 points* for each river we crossed. It may be worth it to move as far as possible, even if it means settling for a sub-optimal space!3pom-explore-space867b00e811693100
NekonyancerLet's move as far as we can. *Click [red]here.[/red] Then [blue]confirm![/blue]*4pom-explore-space667b00e811693110pom-explore-space6 1
NekonyancerThe space we stopped on lets us take a new quest from the [red]*Quest market!*[/red] There are always two quests available, but if we don't like either of them, we can take the top card of the Quest deck instead.1pom-quest-market67b00e88e57cb00pom-quest-market 1
NekonyancerWe've already set up some emerald synergies, so let's take the emerald quest! *Select it! [blue]Confirm![/blue]*2pom-card8667b00e88e57cb10
NekonyancerThere's one more thing I need to mention about exploration. When players explore, they *jump over* spaces that other explorers are on. That means our opponent could reach [red]*this space*[/red] with only 4 movement! [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6805bf7a25bf92.24873161.jpg[/img]1maintitlebar_content67b00ea1e4cc000
NekonyancerWe're getting close to Maracaibo. We could sail all the way there this turn, but I want to hire this *Captain* card first. It will give us another way to spend power during raids! *Sail to the Captain!*1pom-card1167b00ec99776210pom-card11 16
NekonyancerWe've already gone over the procedure for cards like this one. We'll buy it, then another card will replace it. Alternatively, we can simply gain 5 coins, but we're not going to do that. *Click on [blue]"Acquire Captain"[/blue] at the top!*1pom-card1167b00f26cc6f010
NekonyancerWe're close to [red]*Maracaibo*[/red] now, but we can't actually sail directly there. Instead, we have to go to the *Gulf,* which is the long space just underneath it. We'll automatically advance to [red]*Maracaibo*[/red] the turn afterward. *Sail to the Gulf!*1pagemaintitletext67b00f4aa640f10pom-space90 16 pom-space91 1
NekonyancerThe Gulf lets us upgrade a cannon and choose *one* of three options: • *Raid* with +2 power. • *Explore* with up to 4 movement. • *Construct* a residence. I'll briefly cover residences now.1pom-space9067b00f515805300
NekonyancerWhenever we visit a [red]*residence card,*[/red] we can use the *Construct* action, which lets us pay a painful amount of doubloons to place a token on the card. At the end of the game, we'll score points from each residence we placed a token on, depending on its unique scoring condition.2pom-card8267b00f515805300pom-card75 1 pom-card80 1 pom-card76 1 pom-card82 1
NekonyancerFor example, a token on [red]*this residence*[/red] (Pirate's Cove) will be worth 3 points for each treasure we buried.3pom-card8267b00f515805300pom-card82 1
NekonyancerWhen we use the *Gulf's* construct action, we can construct on *any* residence card across the Caribbean, but it doesn't get us out of paying that card's cost! A token on the [red]*Pirate's Cove*[/red] would certainly be nice for us, but we shouldn't splurge on it until later in the game. We don't have nearly enough doubloons right now anyway.4pom-ship9214348767b00f515805300pom-card82 1
NekonyancerWe'll use the *Raid* option in a second, but first, let's trigger that upgrade. I have a very important one in mind. *1.* Click on [blue]*Upgrade.*[/blue] *2.* Select the bottom-right cannon (Upgrade 14). [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67d841f0ba8f13.59487831.jpg[/img] *3. [blue]Confirm![/blue]*5pom-buttonAction6867b00f515805310
Nekonyancer*Next, click on the [blue]big blue button.[/blue]* *Select [blue]Roll to Raid![/blue]*1maintitlebar_content67b00f736f2c810
NekonyancerHmm. We didn't get a good emerald roll, but we can still raid for emeralds with *7 power* (2 from our trader, 1 from an upgrade, 2 from the Gulf). *Click on [red]this button[/red] at the top to raid for emeralds.* *Then continue.*1pom-die0-inner-side2-inner-pips67b00f999d86a00pom-buttonRaid1 1
NekonyancerWe have five options to choose from now! Our last ship upgrade unlocked [red]*this one:*[/red] 3 power for 1 treasure. What a deal! *Click [red]here[/red] to raid an emerald for 3 power!*2pom-buttonRaid40867b00f999d86a10pom-buttonRaid408 1
NekonyancerNext, let's spend 4 power to gain 3 points and add another emerald to the emerald island! We gained this option from the *Captain* card! *Click [red]here![/red] Then select the emerald.*1pom-buttonRaid41167b00faf1ce6b10pom-buttonRaid411 1
NekonyancerWe don't have enough power for the other three options, but I think you'll agree that we still accomplished a lot! *Click on [red]"End raid."[/red]*1pom-buttonEndRaid67b00fb73a2b510pom-buttonEndRaid 1
NekonyancerAs you've probably already noticed, we triggered the end of the round by reaching the Gulf. Our opponents will get one more turn this round. When it's our turn again, we'll have no choice but to sail to the last space: [red]*Maracaibo.*[/red] The round will end immediately after that.1pom-space9067b00fbdd9e4500pom-space91 1
Nekonyancer*Sail to Maracaibo!*1pom-space9167b00ff24c56110pom-space91 16
NekonyancerThe Maracaibo space simply grants 6 points and a ship upgrade. We're kind of low on coins now, so let's use *"Upgrade 8,"* which lets us discard a quest to gain 8 coins. *Click on this cannon! [blue]Confirm![/blue]*1pom-upgrade92143487-n867b00ffd2499410
NekonyancerI think we'll go all-in on emeralds. *Select the River quest. Then click on [blue]"Discard selected"[/blue] at the top!*1pom-card9567b01059b215c10
Nekonyancer*Okay, Round 1 is over!* At the end of the round, each player gained income from all their [green]green scrolls.[/green] In our case, we gained 2 doubloons from the Emerald Trader and 2 doubloons from the Captain. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67d841f1c5f358.30918774.jpg[/img] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67d841f1c5f358.30918774.jpg[/img]1maintitlebar_content67b01063ecb0d00
Nekonyancer[blue]Each player's ship was then moved to the start location, off the left edge of the Caribbean![/blue] Note that the turn order is *not* affected by the end of the round. We were the last one to take a turn (even though we didn't have much choice), so our opponent will go next!2maintitlebar_content67b01063ecb0d00
NekonyancerThere's only one more thing I have to show you: *figureheads.* *Sail to Tobago!*1pom-card6167b010d5ce62e10pom-card61 16
Nekonyancer"Upgrade 9" will let us pay 3 doubloons to gain a Figurehead! *Select this cannon. [blue]Confirm![/blue]*1pom-upgrade92143487-n967b010f6aac9310
NekonyancerBGA laid out several *Figureheads* at the beginning of the game (the number of players + 2). [red]We can only gain 1 per game![/red] You can *hover* over each one for details.1pom-figurehead767b01105cfb0f00
NekonyancerGiven our emerald raiding/burying strategy, I think the Poseidon Figurehead will be the best for us! *Select the Poseidon Figurehead. [blue]Confirm![/blue]*2pom-figurehead767b01105cfb0f10
Nekonyancer[blue]Okay, I think you've seen enough![/blue] The second and third rounds will play out the same way the first one did, but the third and final round will *end* a little differently. At the beginning of the game, BGA placed a token on the Maracaibo space. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67d841f2e8ec55.48549377.jpg[/img] It belongs to the [blue]*last player*[/blue] in player order.1maintitlebar_content67b0110a1c2c100
NekonyancerWhen a player triggers the end of the game by reaching Maracaibo, the game will continue until the last player takes their next turn. This will ensure that all players get the *same number of turns,* regardless of who ended the game. Players will receive income when the last round ends, just like after any other round. [green]And after that, BGA will count up the points![/green]2maintitlebar_content67b0110a1c2c100
NekonyancerThe endgame scoring procedure is printed on the left edge of the Exploration board. *Click on the [green]Exploration tab.[/green] Then continue.*3pom-tab-explore67b0110a1c2c100pom-tab-explore 3
Nekonyancer[blue]Each player scores...[/blue] • 4 points for each *river* their explorer crossed. • 1 point for every 5 leftover *doubloons.* • Points from their *Improvement cards* and their tokens on *Residence cards.* • Points for each acquired treasure (value determined by treasure island). • 2 additional points for each *buried* treasure. • Points from each quest card. • 10 points for gaining points from at least 6 quests. [green]Whoever has the most points wins![/green]4pagemaintitletext67b0110a1c2c100
NekonyancerOnce you have more experience with the game, you might consider toggling one of the modules in the lobby options! There are quite a few of them, so I won't go through them here. [green]Check page 14 of the rulebook if you're interested![/green]5maintitlebar_content67b0110a1c2c100
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Pirates of Maracaibo!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! Big thank yous go out to... • *Ralph Bienert, Ryan Hendrickson,* and *Alexander Pfister* for designing this game. • *Game's Up* for publishing. • *Kayvon* and *Mogri* for bringing it to BGA. Have fun! :D6maintitlebar_content67b0110a1c2c100
