Jonathan2004Welcome to *Lewis & Clark* !
We are in the 1804 American Wild West in expedition to the west coast. Each player will embody a hypothetical rival expedition.
[tip] This is a *race* game driven by *resource* and *hand* *management*.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
Jonathan2004The *race* refers to the historic expedition. Every one starts at the same position in Saint-Louis, on the right side of the board.
You see a [red]red[/red] pawn for the red player *scout* and a [blue]blue[/blue] pawn for the blue player *scout*.
[tip] this position on the board is marked *River (5)* because there are 5 positions below, for when you move backward.
2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000slot_river_5 6
Jonathan2004Your goal is to pass the *Fort Clatsop* flag on the left side of the board (west coast).
You will need to *move* your *scout* along the river and the mountains to reach this place AND and set up *camp* here or further.
!!! I soon explain the concept of *Camp*
[tip] Mouse over the board at anytime to see how many moves you still need (*39* at the start)3slot_river_44000slot_river_44 1
Jonathan2004Each player starts with the same *6* Character cards (only the artwork differs).
[tip] You see your hand of cards in the upper area.
!!! the other 54 cards of the deck are unique, the tutorial cannot explain all of them : remember to mouse over everything you don't know in order to display details.4archiveCommentElementPointerTargetInner000hand 6
Jonathan2004Let's detail the 6 starting Character cards :
On the left you have [red]*The Commander*[/red] who allows you to move your *Scout* forward on the [blue]*Route*[/blue] :
Pay 1 *Food* and move your Scout forward 2 *River* spaces.
OR pay 1 *Canoe* and move your Scout forward
4 *River* spaces.
OR pay 1 *Horse* and move your Scout forward
2 *Mountain* space
[tip] he's the only way to move at start...5card_1_1000card_1_1 6
Jonathan2004Then you have [red]the Interpreter[/red].
[tip] this is your way to take indians pawns from the board.
[img]https://snipboard.io/iV2LC9.jpg[/img]
6card_2_1000card_2_1 1
Jonathan2004The next 4 cards have the same function : get resources of 1 type :
- brown for *wood*
- purple for *food*
- grey for *equipment*
- yellow for *fur*
[tip] you really can understand the game thanks to colors, you do not have to know all the associated terms ;)
7card_3_1000card_3_1 1 card_4_1 1 card_5_1 1 card_6_1 1
Jonathan2004All the 6 resources are identified by colored hexagons.

- white is for *horse*8resource_tech_44000stock_food 1 stock_wood 1 stock_tech 1 stock_fur 1 stock_horse 1 stock_canoe 1
Jonathan2004Below the game board, you see players's *expedition board*.
You see here all of your resources (3 starting hexagons) and all of your indians (1 starting).
This represent the size of your expedition : 3 + 3 + 5 = 11 *resources max at anytime* ([tip] you can increase this by *upgrade*), you have no limit for the Indians.
[tip] Every player starts with the same boats...9pboard_0000ff000indian_3 2 resource_food_10 2 resource_fur_46 2 resource_tech_24 2 pboard_full_0000ff 2 pboard_full_ff0000 1
Jonathan2004Now players take *turns* ...
GAME TURN :
- On your turn, you [red]*must*[/red] perform *1* Action.
- You can also *Recruit* a new *Character* card.
- you can set up *Camp*.
[tip] Those two phases are optional: each of them can be done any time during the player’s turn, before or after the compulsory Action.
Let's see these phases one by one...10archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
Jonathan2004The *Action phase* :
- you play a card from your hand
- you play Indians from your boats to the *village* = available places on the board11archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000hand 1 slot_village_1 1 slot_village_2 1 slot_village_3 1 slot_village_4 1 slot_village_6 1 slot_village_7 1 slot_village_8 1 slot_village_9 1 slot_village_10 1
Jonathan2004The *Recruitment Phase* :
You may recruit a character and add the card to your hand.
-The card must be visible on the *the Journal of Encounters* (cards on the right side deck).
- the card have a cost (see later with example)12archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000card_41_0 1 card_30_0 1 card_26_0 1 card_22_0 1 card_16_0 1
Jonathan2004The *Encampment Phase* :
You move your camp forward (hopefully :) ) or not (you don't move backward the camp).
Then you get back all your played cards to your hand.
[tip] To know where it is, there is a colored camp token on the *Route* (near your Scout at start) [img]https://snipboard.io/izqYIH.jpg[/img] 13camp_0000ff000camp_0000ff 2
Jonathan2004Now we detail the *Action phase* with interactive examples in this walkthrough.
!!! i will detail the optional phases when they come...1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6223745bd113100
Jonathan2004To activate a *Character card action*, you need to spend 1 to 3 *Strength* represented by the Indian figure : Indians of your boats AND/OR or 1 Card of yours face down.
!!! the card will activate 'Strength' times
[tip] the number on the top left corner of the card sum up the amount of Indian figures on its back side. (eg. the Interpreter has a Strength of *2*, the Fur Trader a Strength of *1*)2card_2_16223745bd113100card_2_1 1 card_6_1 1
Jonathan2004It's your turn, the interface is ready for an action :
- highlights on cards, village & journal
What will appear :
- A message with the current *Strength*
- A button "+1 Indian" ( shortcut for selecting an available Indian)
- A button "Perform the action" to confirm
- A button "Cancel" to cancel and restart your action
- on the upper right, a sum up of the card and the Strength2breadcrumbs6223745e77a7600page-title 2 selected_action_1 6 breadcrumbs 2 card_6_1_mob 1
Jonathan2004For this action we play the *Fur trader*, using the strength of the *Blacksmith* for a total strength of 1.
*[blue]Action[/blue]* :
- click the card 1 (the one to play)
- then select the card 2 (the Strength)
- click "perform"
- click on the resources you want : 2 yellow furs
- click "Done"
!!! all these steps are undoable, the tutorial does not refresh between steps
!!! Sorry for a bug in this single action you have to do all of these steps 2 times3maintitlebar_content6223745e77a7610page-title 2 card_5_1 18 card_6_1 17 breadcrumbs 2
Jonathan2004Next to your expedition board, you have the *playing area* where your cards stay played until you *Camp*.
We see face up the cards played and face down the cards used as Strength.
[tip] the hand management aspect of the game will be to *camp* to refill your hand of cards1card_6_1622374c330b4e00card_6_1 1 card_5_1 2
Jonathan2004While playing the fur trader, we add *1 yellow* badge to the playing area (look at upper right corner of the card) [img]https://snipboard.io/Z5MwKU.jpg[/img].
Since our neighbor played the commander, the playing area gives 2 *yellow badges*
!!! *Result* : The action card gives us *2 fur hexagons* max !
[tip] you have badges counters in your inventory (near your score)
2card_6_1622374c330b4e00card_6_1 1 card_1_2 1
Jonathan2004Turn 2 :
Practice activating a card again.
*[blue]Action[/blue]* :
- click the card 1 (the one to play)
- then select the card 2 (the Strength)
- click "perform"
- click on the resources you want (according to available spaces) : 2 purple food
- click "Done"1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment622374d04c6f410card_4_1 17 card_3_1 18
Jonathan2004While playing the hunter, we add *1 purple* badge to the playing area.
[img]https://snipboard.io/QiUBOY.jpg[/img]
Since our neighbor played the hunter too (*even if face down*), the playing area gives 2 *purple badges*
!!! *Result* : The action card gives us *2 food hexagons* max !
[tip] you have badges counters in your inventory (near your score)1card_4_162237503c129900card_4_1 1 card_4_2 1 boardblock_0000ff 1
Jonathan2004Turn 3 :
*[blue]Action[/blue]* :
- click the card 1 (To move your *Scout*)
- click the card 2 (Strength 2)

- click "Done"1breadcrumbs6223753fb11dd10page-title 2 breadcrumbs 2 card_1_1 17 card_2_1 18
Jonathan2004Now you see all your cards (6) in the playing area.
You also see all the Indians (1) you played as Strength on cards near the activated card .
!!! You have no more Indian or cards for your next turn..
You [red]*will have to*[/red] *Camp* (remember *compulsory* action) to get back your cards and indians token on them.2card_1_162237557a9e4a00card_2_1 1 pboard_full_0000ff 2
Jonathan2004Before you *Camp*, you see where your [blue]Scout[/blue] is. Here he moved forward 6 places on the Route (3*2 River thanks to the Commander)3meeple_0000ff62237557ab9ba00
Jonathan2004*ENCAMPMENT Phase*
- Get back your played cards into your hand
- Place all the Indians played on your cards back on the Boats of your Expedition.
- Calculate how much [red]*Time*[/red] you spend in Camp
!!! Time is automatically calculated by BGA but you must understand it : see next slide
[tip] Here you camp AFTER action but you could wait for your next turn and camp BEFORE your action.4button_camp62237557ab9ba00button_camp 2
Jonathan2004*Time*
[img]https://snipboard.io/v9WIiY.jpg[/img]
+ 1 per card still in your hand
+ 1 if boat 2 contains resources
+ 1 per resource in boat 3
+ 1 per Indian in boat 2
[tip] the button sum up the Time, as your inventory does with tooltip details

!!! the best places on boats are automatically chosen5pboard_0000ff62237557ab9ba00button_camp 2 pboard_0000ff 2 counter_fallback_0000ff 2
Jonathan2004*[blue]Action[/blue]* :

- Confirm after reading details on Time calculation
[tip] Right now we have 0 card, 0 indian, 2 resources on boat 1 ==> Time = 16button_camp62237557ab9ba10
Jonathan2004Your Scout moves *-1* space so it moves backward 1 Route space.
THEN your camp is set next to your scout
(OR it does not move if it would make your camp go backward).1meeple_0000ff62237563b059f00meeple_0000ff 2 camp_0000ff 2
Jonathan2004The end of the *Encampment* :
you see all your cards in your hand again, ready to be used when you perform an action.
And your Indians are back on your boats.2hand62237563b16b300hand 2 pboard_0000ff 2
Jonathan2004We still don't want to recruit, let's end the turn.
*[blue]Action[/blue]* :
- click on "End turn"3button_pass62237563b16b310button_pass 2
Jonathan2004Now we want to play some Indian on the board places called *The Village*.
Each area has its own name and functionality summarized by icons.
[tip] Each circle means an available spot for 1 Indian.
*[blue]Action[/blue]* :
- click on the circle below *Craftsmanship*
- Take 1 brown Wood
- Take 1 grey Equipment
- click "Done"1slot_village_962237585dec9610
Jonathan2004*RECRUITMENT PHASE*
Here we are, you have enough resources to *recruit* the card you want : "Black Moccasin".
*Cost* =
+ as many *Fur* as indicated by his *position* (from bottom to top)
+ as many *Equipment* as the *Strength* of the Character
[tip] Mouse over the visible cards to see their function AND their *cost* : Here is 2 grey + 2 yellow

Jonathan2004You see the card has left *the Journal of Encounters* and it is now in you hand, ready to use1journal_2622375b2af36d00card_22_0 1
Jonathan2004Now the game automatically moves all the
Encountered Character cards downwards to the empty spot, then draws a new Character card and place it on the first spot.
[img]https://snipboard.io/ykYPTv.jpg[/img]
[tip] it makes sense of a higher cost for the top cards2gameaction_status622375b2af55201journal_5 1 card_21_0 1 card_41_0 1 card_30_0 1
Jonathan2004Let's wait for 2 turns before I can show you some last things...
You will see i play the *Hunter* and the *Lumberjack* to get resources like before.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment622375d0ac77d00
Jonathan2004Now i will show you how to get more Indians in your boats (1 may not be enough to your entire game right ?).
Thanks to *the Interpreter* card you are able to take as many indians currently in the Village as you want.
- look at village areas containing 1 indian
- look at the bottom *newcomer area*
- look at the bottom left to see how many indians still are in the *Stock* to come (9 for 2 players)1card_2_16223767f3ebc300card_2_1 1 slot_village_2 2 indian_4 2 indian_5 1
Jonathan2004*[blue]Action[/blue]* :
- click the card 1
- click the card 2 (strength 1)
- 2 * click [img]https://snipboard.io/tQTWYE.jpg[/img] as many times as you want more Indians
- click "Done and End Turn"2breadcrumbs6223767f3ebc310page-title 2 card_5_1 18 card_2_1 17
Jonathan2004When you play the *Interpreter*, consider not to recruit later the first card of the *Journal* because it will be automatically discarded !1journal_1622376886a46700journal_1 2
Jonathan2004Remember your (2) available Indians are visible on your Expedition boats.2pboard_0000ff622376886c6df00indian_1 2 indian_4 2
Jonathan2004Now let's see one last specific Village Action :
*Expedition Upgrade*
*[blue]Action[/blue]* :

- click to spend 3 brown woods
- click to choose 1 new boat : select "Indian Boat II" with more spaces
- click [img]https://snipboard.io/tQTWYE.jpg[/img] to get a free Indian
- click "Done"
[tip] mouse over the boats tiles pile at the bottom of the board in order to get a description.1slot_village_2622376b9b539400upgrade_0_3 1 upgrade_2_2 1
Jonathan2004This is how you upgrade your *Expedition* !
You see 1 more boat, with an Indian artwork and 3 circles meaning 3 Indian spaces.
The Time icon on the top of it means all the boat cost 1 time if it's loaded (as the resource boat 2).
[tip] the indian icon on the top left is the direct gain from this tile1upgrade_3_1622376dbdf76300upgrade_3_1 1
Jonathan2004That's it ! You know all the basics !
[tip] all other cards will function the same with different benefits
[tip] other village spots function the same with different benefits
