Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ee0466ecb4.70393599.jpg[/img] You are planning - and then experiencing - your own dream vacation to Japan! [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer and will take about 20 minutes to complete.[/green]1maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerIn *Let's Go to Japan,* players will draw Activity cards and strategically schedule them on different days in their week-long itinerary. After *13 rounds,* players will go on their trips, scoring points along the way. [green]Whoever scores the most points wins![/green]2maintitlebar_content000
Nekonyancer[red]*This tracker*[/red] will keep track of what round it is. It will also show you what happens in each round! [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ee04823945.99854089.jpg[/img] In this case, it shows that each player will draw two Activity cards: one from the [blue]blue Tokyo deck[/blue] and one from the [red]pink Kyoto deck.[/red] They must *play* one of those cards and *pass* the other one.3turnboard_marqueur_5000turn 1
NekonyancerHere's what we drew: [blue]*Todoroki Valley Park*[/blue] (in Tokyo) and a [red]*Flea Market*[/red] (in Kyoto)! Now we have to pick one and schedule it on one of the days in our itinerary!4card_1_38000card_1_38 2 card_2_2 1
Nekonyancer*Scroll down* until you find our itinerary. As you can see, each day of the week has an icon next to it, indicating [red]*favorable conditions.*[/red] In each game, BGA will determine a *randomized* icon order and make sure every player has that *same* order. If we schedule events on days with matching conditions, we'll earn valuable *Day Bonuses!*5maintitlebar_content000tokenjour_1 1 tokenjour_2 1 tokenjour_3 1 tokenjour_4 1 tokenjour_5 1 tokenjour_6 1
NekonyancerFor example, in this particular game, Thursday is a good day for [red]*nature/garden activities!*[/red] [blue]*Todoroki Valley Park*[/blue] has a matching icon in its top-left corner, so it would be good to schedule it on Thursday.6tokenjour_4000tokenjour_4 1
NekonyancerFriday is a good day for [green]*mood-boosting activities,*[/green] and Saturday is a good day for [blue]*shopping activities.*[/blue] Kyoto's [red]*Flea Market*[/red] would fit perfectly on either day!7tokenjour_5000card_2_2 1 tokenjour_5 3 tokenjour_6 2
NekonyancerThey're both fine choices, but [blue]*Todoroki*[/blue] is worth 4 points (shown in the top-right corner). The [red]*Flea Market*[/red] is only 3. *Click on [blue]Todoroki Valley Park!*[/blue]8card_1_38010card_1_38 7 card_2_2 1
NekonyancerGood! Now we have to choose a day for the activity! Scroll down and *click on the Thursday column!*1card_1_38675d4010b6bf210cardposition_4_1_11941354 16
NekonyancerGreat! By the way, the Kyoto Flea Market was *not* discarded, as it might be in some other games. Instead, it was placed in the top-right corner of our opponent's board. *Click on [red]<<<, >>>,[/red] or the [blue]eye[/blue] in our opponent's info panel to take a look at their board. Then continue.*1nameplayer_11941354675d418eda8c900nameplayer_11941354 1 eye_92143487 2
NekonyancerYou should be able to see our opponent's board now! The card we passed them was placed [red]*here.*[/red] They can't look at it yet, but they can see that it's a [red]Kyoto card.[/red] Just knowing what city it's in can affect one's strategy!2compteurcardkyotodiscard_92143487675d418eda8c900compteurcardkyotodiscard_92143487 1
NekonyancerWhile we're here, *scroll down* to their itinerary. It looks like they scheduled an event in [red]*Kyoto!*[/red] That must mean... *Use [red]<<<, >>>,[/red] or the [red]eye[/red] to get back to our board.* ... Yep! There's a [blue]Tokyo card[/blue] in the corner of our own board!3compteurcardtokyodiscard_11941354675d418eda8c900compteurcardtokyodiscard_11941354 2 nameplayer_92143487 1 card_2_16 1 eye_11941354 1
Nekonyancer[blue]That's it for Round 1![/blue] At the top, the [red]*Round Tracker*[/red] advanced to Round 2, which will play out just like Round 1 did: Play a card, pass a card.4turnboard_marqueur_5675d418eda8c900turn 1
NekonyancerLet's see. We can stay at a [blue]*really nice hotel*[/blue] in Tokyo or visit [red]*Ryoanji Temple*[/red] in Kyoto. The hotel card has an absurdly high victory point value, but it comes with a trade-off! Those red icons at the top of the hotel card are *stress icons.* In this case, they represent *financial* stress. That hotel ain't cheap!5card_1_61675d418eda8c900card_1_61 2 card_2_66 1
NekonyancerIn addition to [red]financial stress,[/red] we can encounter [red]physical stress[/red] icons, as well as their opposites: [green]financial and physical happiness![/green] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ee0499d240.64382202.jpg[/img]6card_1_61675d418eda8c900
NekonyancerAt the end of the game, those negative and positive icons will move [blue]*this tracker*[/blue] left or right on our Mood Track. Whenever it reaches an *extreme,* it returns to the middle, and the corresponding token - [red]*stress*[/red] or [green]*happiness*[/green] - will advance. At the end of the game, we'll lose some points for stress and gain some points for happiness.7smile_11941354675d418eda8c900smile_11941354 2 happy_11941354 3 angry_11941354 1
NekonyancerLong story short, we should keep in mind that though the [blue]*hotel*[/blue] is worth 7 points, it will also increase our stress, making us lose some points. In this case, I think we'll go with the other option. *Click on [red]Ryoanji Temple![/red]*1card_1_61675d41e507ff410card_1_61 2 card_2_66 6
NekonyancerNow we have to place it! The Ryoanji temple can contribute to either [red]*Tuesday's*[/red] or [red]*Friday's*[/red] Day Bonus. But before we pick one, we should stop to consider our first card ([blue]Todoroki Valley Park[/blue]) a little more carefully.1card_2_66675d422a0ba0b00tokenjour_2 1 tokenjour_5 1 card_1_38 2
NekonyancerEach card has a *Highlight of the Day* bonus along the bottom. There's always a *condition* on the left and a *reward* on the right. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ee04b18663.69878660.jpg[/img] In this case, if we accumulate at least 3 temple icons and 3 food icons, Todoroki will give us an extra 11 points!2card_1_38675d422a0ba0b00
NekonyancerHowever, we must accumulate those icons *before* we visit Todoroki on our trip! Therefore, if we schedule our visit to Ryoanji Temple on Friday, its temple icon will *not* contribute to Todoroki's bonus! *Schedule the Ryoanji Temple visit on Tuesday!*3card_1_38675d422a0ba0b10cardposition_2_1_11941354 16
Nekonyancer*Great!* By the way, many cards can contribute to their own Highlight of the Day conditions. For example, this *Take a Cooking Class* card would only need 3 food icons from other cards, not 4. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ee04ca3693.13159609.jpg[/img] 1maintitlebar_content675d423183a5600
NekonyancerRound 3! Wow, this [blue]*Nezu Shrine*[/blue] card could not be more perfect for us. It has 2 Temple icons, which we'll need for [blue]*Todoroki's*[/blue] Highlight bonus. It also has a physical stress icon, which will activate [red]*Ryoanji Temple's*[/red] Highlight bonus. *Click on [blue]Nezu Shrine![/blue]*2card_1_70675d423183a5610card_1_70 7 card_2_66 1 card_1_38 2
NekonyancerWe obviously want to schedule this activity on Tuesday. And since it contributes to Ryoanji's Highlight of the Day bonus, we need to visit it *earlier* in the day. To indicate that, we need to tuck it *behind* Ryoanji! *Scroll down and click on the indicated space!*1card_1_70675d424f2431510cardposition_2_3_11941354 15
Nekonyancer*Great!* But uh... remember when I said Nezu Shrine couldn't be more perfect for us? Well, I lied. It's in [blue]Tokyo,[/blue] and Ryoanji is in [red]Kyoto.[/red] That means we'll have to take a *train* to travel between the two cities.1card_1_70675d425a0ea0c00
NekonyancerWhen we finally go on our trip, we'll need to add a *train token* to our itinerary each time we need to travel. Each one is worth [red]-2 points![/red] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ee04e4ad74.53898446.jpg[/img] However, each player will receive one *penalty-free* ticket. Despite the word "START," it does not have to be the first train ticket we use. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ee050cb196.87591348.jpg[/img]2card_1_70675d425a0ea0c00
NekonyancerIn addition, note that we can't see Nezu Shrine's *Highlight of the Day* bonus anymore. Only visible bonuses can be triggered, and that means only one per day! In this case, it's fine. We probably wouldn't be able to fulfill Nezu Shrine's bonus anyway.3card_1_70675d425a0ea0c00
Nekonyancer*Next round!* Here's an interesting card. It's orange! Orange activities can be done in either [blue]Tokyo[/blue] or [red]Kyoto,[/red] so we won't have to worry about taking more trains. *Select the card!*1card_1_75675d454b5fb4310card_1_75 16
Nekonyancer*Scroll down and schedule it on Wednesday!*1card_1_75675d45647b61d10cardposition_3_1_11941354 16
Nekonyancer[red]*Round 5!*[/red] In this round, there are *four* different cards we can choose from. Instead of drawing them from a deck, they were drawn from the corner of our own board. That means that the four cards we're looking at now are the four cards our opponent passed to us over the last four rounds! (You're about halfway through the tutorial.)1turnboard_marqueur_6675d45735d72500turn 1
NekonyancerAnd, as it says below the round icons, we must play *two* of the four and pass the remaining two back to our opponent.2turnboard_marqueur_10675d45735d72500
NekonyancerI think you've already gotten the hang of scheduling cards, so I'll go ahead and schedule a *Kabuki Show* on Monday...3card_1_22675d45735d72500
Nekonyancer[green]Now for our second card of the round.[/green] The [blue]*Kanda Shrine*[/blue] and [blue]*Conveyor Belt Sushi*[/blue] cards are both fine choices, but let's say that we didn't like our options. At any time, instead of playing a card, we can opt to *go for a walk.*1maintitlebar_content675d45c1f386f00card_1_41 2 card_1_66 2
NekonyancerEvery Tokyo and Kyoto card actually has *"Go for a Walk"* on its backside. Scheduling a walk in our itinerary involves *discarding* a card from our hand (removing it from the game) and drawing a *new* card from either the Kyoto or Tokyo deck. We'll then slot it in somewhere on its *Walk* side without looking at the more interesting side. [blue]Let's try it![/blue] *Click on the Walk icon at the top!*1pagemaintitletext675d45f1b805510
NekonyancerNext, like I said, we have to discard a card. Let's discard the photo sticker booth. Personally, I never cared for those things anyway. *Click on the photo sticker booth!*1card_1_60675d46996892210card_1_60 16
NekonyancerNow we have to choose whether to go for a walk in Tokyo or Kyoto. *Click on [blue]Tokyo![/blue]*1tokyo675d46a188df710tokyo 2
NekonyancerFinally, we must choose a day. *Scroll down and schedule our walk for early Tuesday morning!*1pagemaintitletext675d46af05b5610cardposition_2_3_11941354 15
Nekonyancer*Great!* As you can see, walks also have icons and victory points, but normal activities are generally better.1card_1_43675d46b140d2200
Nekonyancer[blue]Couple more things to mention about walks.[/blue] First of all, whenever we schedule one, we get to take a *research token!* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ee0569fb72.90025641.jpg[/img] When we're choosing a card to play, we can spend a research token to immediately *draw* and *discard* 3 cards.2card_1_43675d46b140d2200
NekonyancerSecond, when we finally go on our trip, we'll be able to peek at the other side of this card. Maybe it will turn out to be something amazing! We can choose to flip it to its other side or keep it as a walk. 3card_1_43675d46b140d2200
NekonyancerMoving on. I've mentioned *Day Bonuses* a few times. Each day's bonus is triggered whenever we schedules a particular day's *third* activity, as we've just done with Tuesday! Our options for the bonus depend on how many *icons* we managed to get that match the day's [red]*favorable condition!*[/red] 4card_1_43675d46b140d2200tokenjour_2 1
Nekonyancer1 matching icon: 1 [green]*Mood advancement.*[/green] 2 matching icons: 2 [red]*Research tokens*[/red] OR 1 [blue]*Wild Experience token.*[/blue] Wild Experience tokens basically count as a single icons. For example, if we had one, we could spend it as a *Food* icon, bringing us closer to triggering Todoroki's Highlight bonus.6bonusjournee_2_2_11941354675d46b140d2200bonusjournee_1_1_11941354 3 bonusjournee_2_1_11941354 1 bonusjournee_2_2_11941354 2
NekonyancerWith 3+ matching icons, we can take a [red]*luxury train token*[/red] or an *extra* walk on the same day. Using a Luxury Train will get us some points and a mood boost. It also means we won't have to use one of the normal trains, which cost us points. Taking an extra walk is the only way to get four cards in a single day. The extra walk does not come with a research token.7bonusjournee_3_2_11941354675d46b140d2200bonusjournee_3_1_11941354 1 bonusjournee_3_2_11941354 2
NekonyancerIn this case, we have *3* temple icons so we can choose one of the top-tier bonuses! Well, we could downgrade and take a lesser bonus if we wanted to. But we don't want to. *Click on [red]"3+"[/red] to get a top-tier bonus!*8bonusjournee_3_11941354675d46b140d2210bonusjournee_3_11941354 1
NekonyancerNone of our activities have strong synergy with walks... *Take a [red]Luxury Train[/red] for our bonus!*1bonusjournee_3_1_11941354675d46bc75aa910bonusjournee_3_1_11941354 1
Nekonyancer[red]*Round 6!*[/red] I think we'll wrap things up soon, but I want you to see how research tokens work. Again, they allow us to immediately *draw* and *discard* 3 cards from our hand.1turnboard_marqueur_7675d471e9427200turn 1
NekonyancerLet's try it! *Click here!*2recherche675d471e9427210
NekonyancerWe can choose how many cards we draw from each city. I think we want more Tokyo options here. *Click on [blue]Tokyo![/blue]*1tokyo675d47599dc7610tokyo 2
Nekonyancer*Click on [blue]Tokyo[/blue] again!*1tokyo675d47a97afd410tokyo 2
Nekonyancer*And again!*1tokyo675d47aa90afc10tokyo 2
NekonyancerSo many options, so little time. [blue]I think you're tired of clicking, so I'll discard three cards for you...[/blue]1card_2_59675d47b3f23e100
NekonyancerAnd there we go! Okay! I think you've seen just about everything as far as *planning* goes. At the end of the [red]*13th round,*[/red] everyone will go on their planned trips!1turnboard_marqueur_13675d481a392e600turnboard_marqueur_13 1
Nekonyancer*Scroll down to our itinerary one last time.* Let's imagine that we somehow finished our plan with only 6 activities in our schedule. I'll tell you how our plan will play out, card by card. This will also function as a *recap* for everything you've learned so far.2maintitlebar_content675d481a392e600
NekonyancerAs BGA goes through the cards, it will use [red]*these five tokens*[/red] to keep track of how many icons we have at any particular time.3marqueur_b_11941354675d481a392e600marqueur_r_11941354 1 marqueur_g_11941354 1 marqueur_p_11941354 1 marqueur_y_11941354 1 marqueur_b_11941354 1
NekonyancerFirst, we'll see a [blue]*Kabuki show.*[/blue] We'll score 3 points for that. BGA will advance the [red]*Unique Experiences token*[/red] one space. Since we won't have 3 Temple icons by then, we won't trigger the card's Highlight of the Day bonus.4card_1_43675d481a392e600card_1_22 2 marqueur_b_11941354 1
NekonyancerOn Tuesday, we'll trigger our walk card. We'll peek at the other side and decide if we want to use that side. Let's say we keep it as a walk. We'll score 1 point and advance our [blue]*mood tracker*[/blue] by 1 space.5card_1_43675d481a392e600smile_11941354 2
Nekonyancer*Nezu Shrine* is next. We'll score 1 point. Our [red]*Temple token*[/red] will advance by two spaces. Our [blue]*Mood tracker*[/blue] will go back one space.6card_1_70675d481a392e600smile_11941354 2 marqueur_r_11941354 1
Nekonyancer*Ryoanji Temple* is next. It's in [red]Kyoto[/red] (we've been in [blue]Tokyo[/blue] until now) so we'll have to place a* Train token* here. It can be our "START" token, the Luxury Train token that we picked up, or a standard -2 point token from the supply. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ee052920c9.26761522.jpg[/img] Let's say that we place our Luxury Train, scoring two points and increasing our *mood* again.7card_2_66675d481a392e600smile_11941354 2
NekonyancerThen, for Ryoanji Temple itself, we'll score 2 points, advance the [red]*temple token,*[/red] and advance the [blue]*mood tracker.*[/blue] Since Nezu Shrine had a Physical Stress icon, we'll trigger Ryoanji's Highlight of the Day bonus: 5 points and 2 more [blue]*mood advancements.*[/blue]10card_2_66675d481a392e600smile_11941354 2 marqueur_r_11941354 1
NekonyancerThe first of Ryoanji's mood advancements will get us to the [red]*happiness extreme.*[/red] The mood tracker will return to the middle, and our [green]*Happiness token*[/green] will increase. This will be worth 5 points at the end of the game (unless it ends up advancing again).11smileposition_3_11941354675d481a392e600smileposition_3_11941354 1 happy_11941354 3
NekonyancerNext is Ramen on Wednesday. 2 points. [red]*Food token*[/red] advances. We won't gain the Highlight bonus because we'll only have 1 Unique Experience by then.12card_1_75675d481a392e600marqueur_g_11941354 1
NekonyancerFinally, Todoroki Valley Park on Thursday. We'll have to put down another train token because the previous city-specific activity (Ramen doesn't count) was in Kyoto. 4 points. [red]*Nature/Garden token*[/red] advances. We won't gain the Highlight bonus because we won't have enough Food icons by then.13card_1_38675d481a392e600marqueur_p_11941354 1
NekonyancerThis would continue for all of our cards until the end of the week! In addition to all the points we'll gain from cards, stress/happiness tokens, and trains, we'll score... • *4/8/12/15* points for each [red]*experience token*[/red] that reached the *4th/7th/10th/12th* space on the track. • *1 point* for each unused Research token. [green]Whoever has the most points wins![/green]14maintitlebar_content675d481a392e600marqueur_r_11941354 1 marqueur_g_11941354 1 marqueur_p_11941354 1 marqueur_y_11941354 1 marqueur_b_11941354 9
NekonyancerBut wait, there's more! Once you have some experience with the base game, you might consider toggling the *Passport expansion* in the lobby options! If you do, each player must choose 1 of 2 Passport cards at the beginning of the game. Each one grants a special ability! [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ee054a9f73.51379935.jpg[/img] This one will give us extra bonuses from financial happiness icons!15maintitlebar_content675d481a392e600
