Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ee026c33d8.89318189.jpg[/img] In 2056, a breakthrough in genetic reconstitution allowed humanity to create dinosaurs! The best application of this technology is, naturally, the creation of a theme park! [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1maintitlebar_content000
Nekonyancer*DinoGenics* is a worker placement game where players take on the role of multibillion-dollar corporations competing to build the most successful dinosaur park. Each player owns a private island and takes turns deploying workers to areas of the mainland where they collect resources to enhance their individual parks. [green]After seven Seasons (rounds), the park with the most victory points wins![/green]2maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerEach Season is divided into two phases: the *Open Season Phase* and the *Upkeep Phase.* Each phase involves several administrative steps that BGA will take care of for us. Part of the first season's Open Season is skipped, so I'll explain it later. We'll move right along to the fun part: *placing workers!*3maintitlebar_content000
Nekonyancer[green]Let's get started![/green] On our turn, all we have to do is place one of our [blue]*workers*[/blue] on an action space and do whatever it says! Each player started with 4 workers. If this were a 4 or 5 player game, each player would only get 3. Everyone gets an extra worker after the 3rd season.8meeple-112000meeple-111 2 meeple-112 2 meeple-113 2 meeple-114 2 303e6c91-b5cb-4785-854f-15e19025bea1 3
NekonyancerI bet you're eager to see some dinosaurs, so let's make one! To do that, we have to place a worker on [red]*Dinogenics IOM*[/red] (Institute of Medicine) and give them a set of matching *DNA cards.*9dinoGenicsIOM000dinoGenicsIOM 1
NekonyancerEach player started with [blue]*3 DNA cards,*[/blue] each containing DNA sequences for one of six dinosaurs, as seen in popular Hollywood movies! Don't give me that look. Parkgoers aren't interested in seeing scientifically accurate dinosaurs. Do you want to see a T-rex with feathers? Yeah, I didn't think so.10card-2000card-3 2 card-1 2 card-2 2
NekonyancerThe number in the *top-right corner* of each card shows how many copies we need to make the dinosaur. [green]What luck! We got two raptor cards, which is all we need to make a raptor![/green]11card-2000
NekonyancerLet's do it! *1.* Click on [red]*Dinogenics IOM.*[/red] A couple different options should have popped up, based on the DNA cards we're holding!12player_name_11941354000dinoGenicsIOM 6
NekonyancerAs expected, one of the options is [red]*Raptor.*[/red] The other one is [blue]*Mutant,*[/blue] which requires any 3 DNA cards. Raptors provide more victory points and reputation, so I think we should go with that! *Click on [red]Raptor.[/red] Then continue.*13iom-5000iom-5 1 iom-7 2
NekonyancerNext, we have to choose where to put the Raptor! There are twelve valid spaces on our private island. Each space can hold exactly one dinosaur. The [red]*top-left space*[/red] is enclosed by high-tech fences, creating a *pen.* But as you can see, we are allowed to place the raptor in *any* space, fenced or not. Placing the raptor outside the pen would be a very, very bad idea.14facility_11941354_5_3000facility_11941354_1_1 6
NekonyancerWe're ready to confirm the action. I'll repeat the first two steps just in case you cancelled them... *1.* Click on [red]*DinoGenics IOM.*[/red] *2.* Select [red]*Raptor.*[/red] *3.* Select the *pen* in the top-left corner of our island. *4.* Click on [blue]*"Confirm"*[/blue] at the top!15facility_11941354_8_1010actionConfirmBtn 2 facility_11941354_1_5 15 facility_11941354_5_1 14 iom-5 1 dinoGenicsIOM 1
NekonyancerGreat, we got our new raptor! Isn't he cute? Let's name him Yoshi. :) Hmm... [green]Does Yoshi's pen look a little small to you?[/green] Well, it isn't! If you hover over Yoshi and inspect the *bottom-right corner* of his DNA card, you'll see that the minimum pen size for a raptor is 1. [green]That means Yoshi is perfectly comfortable here.[/green]1meeple-79675146884326400
Nekonyancer*T-rexes,* on the other hand, require pens of size *3* or greater. If we try to keep a dinosaur in a pen that is too small, it will get restless. [red]You do not want restless dinosaurs.[/red]2card-3675146884326400
NekonyancerThat's it for our turn. [blue]Let's see what our opponent does...[/blue]4card-3675146884326400
NekonyancerThey placed a worker in the [red]*Boneyard!*[/red] The Boneyard is the cheapest and easiest way to get the DNA cards you need, but picking through the trash does not reflect well on one's theme park! They got two specific DNA cards for free, but they also gained two *Scandals.* [red]Each Scandal is worth negative 6 points at the end of the game![/red]1theBoneyard6751469b2e8fb00theBoneyard 6
Nekonyancer[blue]Next turn![/blue] Yoshi was successfully born and housed, but there's one more thing he needs: *food!* At the end of each season (round), each carnivorous dinosaur must be fed. Otherwise, they get hungry. [red]You do not want hungry dinosaurs.[/red]2meeple-796751469b2e8fb00
NekonyancerThe easiest way to get food is to visit the [red]*farm.*[/red] If we do, we'll acquire three goats. That's fine, but I have another idea.3theFarm6751469b2e8fb00theFarm 6
NekonyancerThis is a [blue]*Manipulation card.*[/blue] Everyone started the game with one. If we play ours, we'll get 4 goats! To play a Manipulation card, we have to place a worker on the [red]*Uplink.*[/red]4card-736751469b2e8fb00card-73 2 theUplink 6
NekonyancerLet's do it! *1.* Click on the [red]*Uplink.*[/red] *2.* Select our [green]*Fresh Meat*[/green] manipulation card. *3.* Click on [blue]*"Gain 4 goats"*[/blue] at the top!5theUplink6751469b2e8fb10actionConfirmBtn 2 card-73 3 theUplink 6
Nekonyancer*Good!* As you can see, we now have [red]*4 goats*[/red] in our inventory. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ee02900500.19932253.jpg[/img] The *1* after the slash indicates how many goats we will need at the end of the round to feed all our carnivorous dinosaurs. [blue]It's our opponent's turn again...[/blue]1dgx_cp_11941354675146c251b5a00
NekonyancerThey also went to Dinogenics IOM! If you scroll down to our opponent's island, you'll see that they created a [red]*Pterodactyl!*[/red] Pterodactyls are supposed to be housed in special pens called *biodomes,* but our opponent doesn't have one. Instead, they decided to just let the gigantic predator fly wherever it likes. That's, uh... an interesting choice.1dinoGenicsIOM6751489b1bda200meeple-67 1
NekonyancerNow our opponent has to resolve a *rampage!* A rampage occurs whenever... • [red]a dinosaur is not properly contained.[/red] • [red]a dinosaur is not fed.[/red] • [red]a dinosaur is housed with dinosaurs of other types.[/red]2pagemaintitletext6751489b1bda200
NekonyancerTo resolve the rampage, they must roll a die. There are three possible results: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ee02b0e0f4.01209065.jpg[/img] The dinosaur damages a fence or facility. (3/6 chance) [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ee02d9e874.49702777.jpg[/img] The dinosaur kills a guest AND damages a fence or facility. (2/6) [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ee0303c8b7.78326877.jpg[/img] Your employees manage to contain the beast! A naive guest thought it was all part of a show and gives you 1 credit as a tip. (1/6)3maintitlebar_content6751489b1bda200
NekonyancerThey rolled [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ee032514f8.68165601.jpg[/img] ! The Pterodactyl damaged the facility in the bottom-right corner of their island - *the Visitor Center.* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ee0343b3c5.26964230.jpg[/img]1maintitlebar_content675148a84d4ba00
NekonyancerEveryone has a *Visitor's Center* built into their board. Usually, when a facility is damaged, it is flipped over to its damaged side. Since the Visitor's Center is built in and can't be flipped, our opponent has to take another [red]Scandal[/red] instead. Good thing their Center was empty - when a facility is damaged, any guests inside are killed!2facility_11941354_8_7675148a84d4ba00
NekonyancerThere's a specific way in which the game determines what is damaged by rampaging dinosaurs, but honestly it's not too important for new players. [blue]But if you're curious, you can check Page 11 of the rulebook.[/blue]3maintitlebar_content675148a84d4ba00
NekonyancerNext turn! We have plenty of food for Yoshi now, so let's focus next on how to expand our operations. The first thing we should do is check the [red]*Newsroom,*[/red] which is at the bottom-center of the main board.4maintitlebar_content675148a84d4ba00news_deck 1 card-115 1 news_1 1
NekonyancerThere are two important slots in the Newsroom - one for an [red]*active event*[/red] and one for an [blue]*upcoming event.*[/blue] As you can see, there is no active event in the first season. When this season ends, the upcoming event will slide over into the active slot, and a new upcoming event will be drawn from the deck.5news_1675148a84d4ba00card-115 2 news_1 1
NekonyancerHmm... looks like next round players will be unable to place workers on the *Ferry* and *Timeshare* spaces.6card-115675148a84d4ba00
NekonyancerThe [red]*Ferry*[/red] is the most straightforward way to earn *credits* (money). We'd better stock up on credits now, before the event becomes active! *Click on the [red]Ferry[/red] to place a worker! Then [blue]"Confirm"[/blue] your action!*7theFerry675148a84d4ba10theFerry 6
NekonyancerOur opponent placed a worker on the [red]*Agency,*[/red] allowing them to draw two new manipulation cards and discard one Scandal! That was a smart move, considering all the Scandals they accumulated!1theAgency67514b3a7040d00theAgency 6
NekonyancerWe have one worker left. Let's start working toward our next dinosaur by sending them to [red]*Site A,*[/red] which will let us draw two random DNA cards. *Click on [red]Site A![/red] [blue]Confirm![/blue]*2siteA67514b3a7040d10siteA 6
NekonyancerOoh! We drew another *T-rex* and a *Stegosaurus.* We just need one more T-rex card to make a complete set! That settles it! We're getting a T-rex! We'll have to put in quite a lot of work to get everything ready, but it will be worth it in the end!1card-367514bb223ae300
NekonyancerOur opponent sent their last worker to the [red]*Outsource*[/red] space, allowing them to activate any occupied action space at the cost of 2 credits. Unsurprisingly, they activated the [blue]*Uplink*[/blue] space so they could use one of the Manipulation cards they got from the *Agency* last turn.1outsource67514c6237d0e00theAgency 11 outsource 6 theUplink 2
NekonyancerOkay, everyone's out of workers, bringing the first Season's *Open Season* to a close. [blue]We'll move on to the Upkeep phase![/blue]2maintitlebar_content67514c6237d0e00
NekonyancerFirst, everyone must feed their carnivorous dinosaurs. We have plenty of goats for Yoshi. Our opponent neglected to acquire goats for their Pterodactyl, so it *rampaged* again! *Click on [blue]"Confirm"[/blue] to feed Yoshi!*3actionConfirmBtn67514c6237d0e10actionConfirmBtn 2
Nekonyancer[blue]Next, each player will earn victory points[/blue] (and sometimes other things) [blue]from...[/blue] *• Surviving guests:* 3 points for every 2 guests. *• Dinosaurs:* the number in the bottom-left corner. *• Facilities:* each facility is different. There aren't any guests in the first season, and we didn't acquire any point-generating facilities, so we'll just score 4 points from Yoshi.1meeple-7967514c6f7541100
NekonyancerFinally, everyone's workers will return to their islands, and we'll move on to the next round!2facility_11941354_7_167514c6f7541100
NekonyancerOkay, we moved on to *Season 2!* This time, we'll have a full *Open Season* phase, so I'll explain each step in detail.1meeple-11167514c779b1bf00
NekonyancerFirst, BGA will determine the *Turn Order* for the season, which is based on *Reputation.* Each dinosaur's reputation value is shown at the [red]*bottom-center*[/red] of its DNA card. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ee035f8578.15209347.jpg[/img]2card-1667514c779b1bf00
NekonyancerYoshi's great and all, but he only brings us *2* reputation. Our opponent's Pterodactyl - even though it's rampaging all over their island - has him beat at *4* reputation. [red]That means our opponent will go first this season![/red]3meeple-7967514c779b1bf00
NekonyancerAfter the turn order is determined, our parks officially open, and visitors arrive! The number of visitors each player attracts is based on the turn order. As you can see, in [blue]*Season 2,*[/blue] the 1st and 2nd player each attract 2 guests. But [red]*Season 3*[/red] will be different!4visitor_panel_active67514c779b1bf00visitor_panel_active 2 visitor_panel_upcoming 1
NekonyancerVisitors must be placed on red squares, like the ones on our [blue]*Visitor's Center.*[/blue] If we run out of squares, we'll have to turn some visitors away!5facility_11941354_8_767514c779b1bf00facility_11941354_8_7 2
NekonyancerIn addition to the normal visitors allocated to each player, there's a pool of [red]*Bonus Visitors*[/red] in each season. The first player can immediately claim *2* visitors from the pool (if they have enough room). After that, players can claim them 1 by 1 in turn order until they're all gone or no one has space for more.6active_season_bonus_visitors67514c779b1bf00active_season_bonus_visitors 1
NekonyancerOnce all the visitors are settled in, we can collect entrance fees! [green]Each visitor pays 1 credit![/green]7facility_11941354_8_767514c779c4e200
NekonyancerFinally, the [green]*News cards*[/green] will shift over and new [red]*facilities*[/red] will be made available in the City Center, which is on the left side of the board. We'll learn more about facilities soon!8facility_11941354_8_767514c779ca3500fac_city_0 1 fac_city_1 1 fac_city_2 1 fac_city_3 1 news_deck 3 card-115 3 news_1 3
Nekonyancer[blue]Now we're ready to place workers again![/blue] As I mentioned earlier, our opponent will go first this time. I'll skip over their turns from now on though.9playerorder_p9214348767514c779e2ce00
NekonyancerLet's get to work on that T-rex! The main thing we have to worry about is building a pen that's large enough. To do that, we need to go to the [red]*City Center.*[/red] [blue]At the City Center, we can perform two of the following actions:[/blue] • Use the market. • Buy and rearrange fences. • Buy a facility. • Repair a facility. [blue]Our two actions must be different![/blue]1theCityCenter67514e04d76f200theCityCenter 6
NekonyancerLet's do it! *1.* Click on [red]*Purchase 3 fences.*[/red] *2.* Place 3 fences in [blue]*these spots,*[/blue] along the west end of our island. *3. Continue!*2theCityCenter_action_267514e04d76f200fence_11941354_0_3 2 fence_11941354_0_5 2 fence_11941354_0_7 2 theCityCenter_action_2 6
NekonyancerGreat! We built 3 fences, which cost us 2 credits. That was only the first of our two City Center actions. For our second action, let's visit the *Market,* which is in the bottom-left corner of the main board. [blue]We can buy or sell a DNA card there![/blue]1fence_11941354_0_767514e779da0f00
NekonyancerThere are four card slots in the market. Each card has a *sell* cost and a *buy* cost just under its picture. [green]For example, T-rex cards are worth 4 credits when sold. They cost 6 credits to buy![/green]2card-1067514e779da0f00
NekonyancerThe cards in the right two slots are always *discounted* by [blue]*2 credits*[/blue] and [red]*3 credits.*[/red] That means we can buy the T-rex card for 3 credits instead of 6! Lucky us!3card-1067514e779da0f00card-9 2 card-10 1
NekonyancerLet's buy it! *Select the [red]T-rex card.[/red][blue] Confirm![/blue]*4card-1067514e779da0f10actionConfirmBtn 16 card-10 1
Nekonyancer*Good!* Note that the slot was not refilled. That only happens when players *discard* them at Site B or *sell* them. [blue]You'll see for yourself later.[/blue]1marketDNA_367514f52b7cf800
Nekonyancer[blue]Next turn![/blue] We have all the DNA cards we need, but our pen isn't finished yet. We'll have to go to the City Center again to build another 3 fences. [blue]Hmm... but what will we do with our second City Center action?[/blue]1card-1067514f7a68ab400
NekonyancerMaybe we can build a new *Facility.* There are [blue]*three stacks*[/blue] of random Facility tiles in the City Center. At the beginning of each season, a new tile is placed on each stack. The leftmost stack always contains [red]*Basic Hotels.*[/red]2fac_city_367514f7a68ab400fac_city_0 1 fac_city_1 2 fac_city_2 2 fac_city_3 2
NekonyancerThe cost of each facility is shown in the *bottom-left* corner. For example, the News Room costs 5 credits. [green][tip] To see what each tile does, just hover over them with your mouse.[/green]3fac_city_267514f7a68ab400
NekonyancerUnfortunately, we only have *4 credits* right now, and we'll need 2 credits for new fences, so we can't afford a new facility. Hmm... let's postpone our visit to the City Center and go to [red]*Site B.*[/red]4siteB67514f7a68ab400siteB 6
NekonyancerAt [red]*Site B,*[/red] we can draw 3 DNA cards and then discard 2 of them. We'll have a pretty good chance of drawing something valuable. We'll also get a Market token, which we can redeem for an extra action at the City Center. *Click on [red]Site B.[/red] [blue]Confirm![/blue]*5siteB67514f7a68ab410siteB 6
NekonyancerWe drew a Brontosaurus, Raptor, and Triceratops. The other cards in our hand have temporarily turned gray to show that we can't discard them. Brontosaurus DNA is very valuable, so we should keep it! *Select Raptor first and Triceratops second.[blue] Discard![/blue]*1dna-container-4675150353946910actionConfirmBtn 2 card-18 17 card-19 18
Nekonyancer*Great!* By the way, each player can hold up to *10 DNA cards* at a time. If a player acquires more than that, they'll have to immediately discard some. There is no limit for Manipulation cards (the black ones).1card-176751504a8aa8300
NekonyancerWhen cards are discarded at Site B, they do not actually go into the discard pile. Instead, they are inserted into the market from the *left.* The other cards in the market shift to the *right* to make room. Any cards that are bumped out of the market by all this shifting are moved to the *Boneyard.*2player_name_119413546751504a8aa8300
NekonyancerOkay, let's go to the City Center again! We'll start by selling our Brontosaurus DNA. *1.* Click on [red]*"Use the Market."*[/red] *2.* Scroll up and select our [green]*Brontosaurus card.*[/green] *3. [blue]Confirm![/blue]*1theCityCenter67515093e708610actionConfirmBtn 2 card-17 3 theCityCenter_action_1 6
Nekonyancer[green]Great, we got 5 credits![/green] Just like the cards that we discarded last turn, the [red]*Brontosaurus card*[/red] we sold went into the leftmost slot in the market. Everything else slid over to make room.1maintitlebar_content675150b1533bf00card-17 1
NekonyancerFor our second action, let's buy a facility! The [red]*Medium Hotel*[/red] looks good. *1.* Select the [red]*Medium Hotel.*[/red] *2.* Scroll up and select [red]*this space*[/red] on our island. *3. [blue]Confirm![/blue]* A message should have appeared, asking us if we want to use our Market Token to take a 3rd City Center action after this one. *Click on "Yes, do it!"*3player_name_11941354675150b1533bf10actionConfirmBtn 2 facility_11941354_8_5 1 fac_city_3 1
Nekonyancer*Great!* The Medium Hotel has room for *3* more visitors. More visitors mean more credits at the beginning of each season and more points at the end! The facility is also worth 2 victory points at the end of the game.1facility_11941354_8_5675150cebe89d00fence_11941354_1_8 2 fence_11941354_2_5 2 fence_11941354_2_7 2
NekonyancerNext, let's use our bonus action to purchase new fences! *1.* Click on [red]*"Purchase 3 fences.*[/red] *2.* Place new fences in [blue]*these locations.*[/blue] *3.* Click on *"Continue!"*2facility_11941354_8_5675150cebe89d00select-fences 1 fence_11941354_1_8 2 fence_11941354_2_5 2 fence_11941354_2_7 2 theCityCenter_action_2 1
NekonyancerGreat! We... wait a second. Our pen needs one more fence. Oh shoot. If we had built a square pen [red]*like this,*[/red] it would be finished right now! We could have *rearranged* all of our fences into a square while we were building new ones, but now it's too late. Oops.1facility_11941354_5_3675150e2448bc00fence_11941354_0_3 1 fence_11941354_1_4 1 fence_11941354_3_0 1 fence_11941354_3_4 1 fence_11941354_4_1 1 fence_11941354_4_3 1
NekonyancerBecause of my mistake, we won't be able to get the T-rex this round! Sorry! Well, technically we could, but it would immediately rampage. We don't want that.1card-106751512db32fb00
NekonyancerLet's just send our last worker to the Farm to get some extra goats. *Click on the [red]Farm.[/red][blue] Confirm![/blue]*2theFarm6751512db32fb10actionConfirmBtn 2 theFarm 6
NekonyancerTime for the Upkeep phase! Like last time, we'll have to feed Yoshi a goat. *Click on [blue]"Confirm!"[/blue]*1actionConfirmBtn67515153b199c10actionConfirmBtn 2
NekonyancerNext, we'll generate victory points. This time, we'll get *7 points:* • [green]4 points from Yoshi.[/green] • [green]3 points for having two surviving visitors.[/green] Remember, the points in the corner of our [red]*Medium Hotel*[/red] are granted at the end of the game. We don't get them every round.1gameaction_status_wrap6751515882c3500facility_11941354_8_5 1
NekonyancerEven with my fencing mistake, we're off to a decent start, and I think you got a good feel for the game. But I can't end the tutorial here - [red]you want to see a T-rex, don't you?[/red]1maintitlebar_content675151612a3cb00
NekonyancerWe can rearrange fences for free whenever we're building new ones. Dinosaurs can be moved at this time as well. *1.* Click on [red]*"Purchase three fences."*[/red] *2.* Click on placed fences and empty spaces to rearrange them until it looks like this: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ee03bfc196.37526257.jpg[/img] *3. Continue!*2player_name_11941354675151612a3cb00theCityCenter_action_2 1
Nekonyancer*Perfect!* [blue]Next, I'll fast-forward to when we get our T-rex...[/blue]1player_name_11941354675151c0b71f900
NekonyancerThere she is! I'm from Chicago, so let's name her *Sue!* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ee037dcdf6.37698589.jpg[/img] (Sue, on display in the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago.)1meeple-5567515227ecc1f00
NekonyancerBy the way, even though Sue needs a *Size-3 pen* (or larger) to be comfortable, she doesn't mind sharing her pen with other T-rexes! After all, each dinosaur only takes up 1 space! The same goes for all dinosaurs - their pens can be shared by others of the same type!2facility_11941354_3_367515227ecc1f00
NekonyancerOkay, I think that will do! [blue]At the end of the 7th season, some final points are dished out:[/blue] *+ points* for facilities. *+3 points* for each unique species of dinosaur in a valid habitat. *+1 point* for every 3 leftover credits. *+1 point* for every 2 leftover DNA cards. *-6 points* for each Scandal. [green]Whoever has the most points wins![/green]3maintitlebar_content67515227ecc1f00
NekonyancerOne last thing: after you have some experience with the game, you might want to try one of the *variants* in the lobby options! *Corporate Bailout:* removes aggressive "attack" Manipulation cards. *Corrupted Venues:* Only for advanced players. If a certain news event comes up, a corrupted T-rex will invade each player's park! Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Dinogenics!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! Big thank yous go out to... • *Richard Keene* for designing the game. • *Ninth Haven Games* for publishing. • *TagGerr* and *Orh* for bringing it to BGA! Have fun! :D5maintitlebar_content67515227ecc1f00
