Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ee02256630.20565374.jpg[/img] Dickory is a climbing card game for 2 players! [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerIn *Dickory,* two players take turns playing stronger and stronger combinations of cards called *Melds.* At any time, they can take extra cards from the [red]*Card queue,*[/red] which has a side-effect of reordering the card ranks. To win a round, you must get rid of all your cards. [green]The first player to win two rounds wins the game![/green]2maintitlebar_content000waiting_card 1
NekonyancerCards are ranked from *1-12* with four copies of each card, making a total of 48 cards. At the beginning of each round, BGA deals a hand of *11 cards* to each player. You might have to scroll down a little bit to see [red]*our hand.*[/red]3maintitlebar_content000myhand 1
NekonyancerAt the beginning of the game (or when a player passes), one player will have to *Lead* by playing a combination of cards called a *Meld.* [blue]There are five valid types of Melds:[/blue] *Single.* (5, for example.) *Double:* (5-5) *Triple:* (5-5-5) *Quadruple:* (5-5-5-5) *Run of 3:* (5-6-7) [tip] You can click on [red]*Meld list*[/red] at the top to see descriptions of all the Melds!4maintitlebar_content000btnPlayerAid 1
NekonyancerBGA randomly gave the first Lead to our opponent, [red]nekonekoneko3.[/red] [blue]Let's see what they play...[/blue]5playercardcount_92143487000playertable_92143487 1
NekonyancerThey played [blue]*two 4s*[/blue] - a Double! Now it's our turn. [green]We must perform one of the following 3 actions:[/green] • *Beat* the previous Meld. • *Take cards* from the [red]*Queue*[/red] and *beat* the previous Meld. • *Pass* and refill the [red]*Queue.*[/red] Beat, take cards/beat, or pass. Got it? :)1played_card_container6750e314bb3f000waiting_card 1 played_card_container 2
NekonyancerWe'll start with the *beat* option. To beat a Meld, we must play one that is the *same type, but higher rank.* To see what ranks are higher, we need to check [green]*the Mouse.*[/green] We need a name for it... How about *Dock?* :)2clock_wrap6750e314bb3f000mouse_arrow 3
NekonyancerRight now, Dock is pointing to [red]*1,*[/red] showing that 1 is the *highest* rank. The *lowest* rank is immediately after that - [blue]*2*[/blue] - and the ranks get higher as you go clockwise around the clock!3clock_number_16750e314bb3f000clock_number_1 1 clock_number_2 2
NekonyancerIf you don't like clocks for some reason, don't worry. The ranks are all laid out [green]*here.*[/green]4rank_list6750e314bb3f000rank_list 3
NekonyancerLet's apply this knowledge to our turn. Our opponent played a [blue]*Double 4.*[/blue] To beat it, we need to play another Double of a number that is higher than 4. Any number from [red]*5 to 1*[/red] will work!5played_card_container6750e314bb3f000played_card_container 2 clock_number_1 1 clock_number_5 1 clock_number_6 1 clock_number_7 1 clock_number_8 1 clock_number_9 1 clock_number_10 1 clock_number_11 1 clock_number_12 1
Nekonyancer*1.* Select the two *8s* in our hand. *2.* Click on [green]*"Play selected"*[/green] at the top!6myhand_item_456750e314bb3f010btnPlayCard 3 myhand_item_43 16 myhand_item_45 16
NekonyancerGood! Our [blue]*Double 8*[/blue] is now on the table. It's our opponent's turn again. If they want to beat our double 8, they'll have to play a double of one of [red]*these numbers.*[/red]1played_card_container6750e31dc772300played_card_container 2 clock_number_1 1 clock_number_9 1 clock_number_10 1 clock_number_11 1 clock_number_12 1
Nekonyancer*Uh-oh!* Our opponent responded with a [blue]*Double 11!*[/blue] The only way we can beat it is by playing Double [red]*12*[/red] or Double [red]*1*[/red]... and we don't have those cards.1played_card_container6750e332bd40e00played_card_container 2 clock_number_1 1 clock_number_12 1
NekonyancerThis is a good time to explain the [red]*Card queue.*[/red] Dock didn't just randomly choose "1" as the highest rank. It chose 1 because 1 is at the front of the queue!2card_106750e332bd40e00waiting_card 1
NekonyancerOn our turn, we can take up to five cards from the *front* of the queue. If we do, [green]*Dock*[/green] will point to a new number, which may give us a way to beat the Double 11! *Click on the "1" card. Then continue.*3card_106750e332bd40e00mouse_arrow 3
NekonyancerIf you clicked, [green]*Dock*[/green] and the [blue]*card ranks*[/blue] should have shifted around to show 8 as the new highest rank and 9 as the lowest. If you check your hand, you'll see that our cards have moved around too. This shift of ranks is not official yet - BGA is merely showing us what things will look like *IF* we take the 1, making it easy to determine the best move.4card_106750e332bd40e00rank_list 2 mouse_arrow 3
NekonyancerHmm... if 8 becomes the highest rank, we'll be able to beat our opponent's Double 11 with a Double 2. Let's do it! The [red]*1*[/red] in the queue is still selected, right? It should be outlined in [red]*red.*[/red] *1.* Select the *indicated 2s* in our hand. *2.* Click on [green]*"Play selected"*[/green] at the top!5card_106750e332bd40e10btnPlayCard 3 myhand_item_26 16 myhand_item_38 16
Nekonyancer*Excellent!* The [red]*1*[/red] in the queue was added to our hand. The shift in card ranks became official, allowing us to play Double 2. Note that all the other cards in the queue shifted to the right, leaving the [green]*leftmost space*[/green] empty.1queue_space_56750e35f2e2a900queue_space_5 8 played_card_container 2 myhand_item_10 1
NekonyancerBy the way, it is possible to draw a card from the queue and play it in the same turn. To tell BGA that you want to play a card that you're taking, you'll need to click on the card again. The highlight will turn [blue]*bright blue.*[/blue] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ee02491711.83135021.jpg[/img] In this example, the player is taking three cards and immediately playing the 10. [green]Now then, let's see how our opponent responds...[/green]2maintitlebar_content6750e35f2e2a900
NekonyancerThey [red]*passed!*[/red] [blue]When a player passes, three things happen:[/blue] *1.* If there are at least 2 cards in the queue, the rightmost card is *discarded,* making all the ranks shift again. *2.* The rest of the queue moves over, as usual. *3.* If the [green]*Deck*[/green] has not run out of cards, any empty spaces in the queue are *refilled.*1card_226750e3d05814300deck_counter 3
NekonyancerThe player who did not pass (in this case, us) is said to have won the *"trick"* and must *lead* the next one. You can think of tricks as mini-rounds. Since we're leading, the [red]*"Pass"*[/red] button at the top was temporarily removed. And if you try and *select* some cards in the [red]*queue,*[/red] an error will pop up. Try it!2maintitlebar_content6750e3d05814300waiting_card 1
NekonyancerWith those options blocked, all we can do is *play a meld.* We can choose any of the five Melds I mentioned before: Single, Double, Triple, Quadruple, and Run-of-3. Let's try a Triple! *Play the three 10s in our hand!*3myhand_item_466750e3d05814310btnPlayCard 3 myhand_item_23 16 myhand_item_39 16 myhand_item_46 16
Nekonyancer*Hah!* Our opponent passed again! I guess they don't have any Triples in their hand! We won another trick, allowing us to Lead again. Let's try a *Run-of-3* this time. *Play 1-2-3!*1myhand_item_16750e40311cc310myhand_item_1 16 myhand_item_11 16 myhand_item_10 16
NekonyancerGood! By the way, the rank of a run is determined by the rightmost card. That means our [blue]*1-2-3 Run*[/blue] has a rank of *3.*1played_card_container6750e418f168300played_card_container 2
NekonyancerOkay, I think you got the hang of it! Remember, when one player gets rid of all their cards, they win the round. [green]The first player to win two rounds wins the game![/green]2maintitlebar_content6750e418f168300
NekonyancerOnce you have more experience with the game, you may wish to try one of the *variants,* which can be toggled in the *lobby options!* *Dock Variant:* Run of 2 (like 6-7) and Run of 4 (like 2-3-4-5) are added to the [red]*Meld list!*[/red]3maintitlebar_content6750e418f168300btnPlayerAid 1
Nekonyancer*Hickory variant:* Adds Runs of 2 and Runs of 4 (like the Dock variant). Instead of *beating* the current meld, players gain the ability to *add one card,* altering it. For example, if one player played a Single 6, the other player could add... - a 6, making a Double. *OR* - a 7, making a Run of 2.4maintitlebar_content6750e418f168300
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Dickory!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! [blue]Big thank yous go out to...[/blue] • *Sean Ross* and *Hanibal Sonderegger* for designing this game. • *New Mill Industries* for publishing. • *ufm* for bringing it to BGA! Have fun! :D5maintitlebar_content6750e418f168300
