Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67836fbc9dbc78.19822626.jpg[/img] Founded on the fruitful lands of an erstwhile monastery, two villages have held up the dual tradition of brewing beer and baking bread. While sharing fields and resources, they still find pride in their friendly rivalry of besting each other’s produce. [green][tip] This tutorial will take 10 minutes to complete and is best viewed on a computer.[/green]1maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerIn Beer & Bread, each player represents one of these two villages. Over the course of six years - which alternate between *fruitful* and *dry* - players will take turns playing cards to harvest resources, upgrade facilities, produce beer and bread, and sell them for coins.2maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerHowever, in order to win, we must maintain a *balance* between our baked and liquid goods. After the sixth year, we only score the coins collected from the type of good - beer or bread - for which we earned *less.* [green]The village with the higher score wins![/green]3maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerAt the beginning of each round, each player is dealt *5 cards.* You should be able to see them along the left side of our screen. On our turn, we must choose a card and use it to perform one of three actions: [blue]- Harvest and Store.[/blue] [red]- Produce and Sell.[/red] [green]- Clean and Upgrade.[/green]4pagemaintitletext000
NekonyancerThis small [green]*windmill*[/green] indicates that we're the *first player.* I think we'll start with a [blue]Harvest and Store[/blue] action!5windmill_id000windmill_id 3
NekonyancerHarvesting involves playing a card into our *Harvest column.* We'll then see which *types* of resources are indicated on the card, count all the icons of those types in our entire column, and gain all of those resources.6bb_card_front_48000
NekonyancerLet's try it! *1.* Select the [red]*first card*[/red] in our hand. *2.* Click on [blue]*"Harvest and Store"*[/blue] at the top!9bb_card_front_48010harvest_btn 2 bb_card_front_48 6
Nekonyancer*Next, [green]confirm[/green] our action!*1confirm_btn676de844b2fca10confirm_btn 3
Nekonyancer*Great!* The card went into our *Harvest Column,* which is just under the bottom-right corner of the board. You might need to *scroll down* a little bit to see it.1bb_card_front_48676de84bc778f00
NekonyancerSince there's water (blue), wheat (yellow), and rye (orange) indicated on the card, we counted up all the water, wheat, and rye icons in our column and gained all those resources. Since this was our first time harvesting, we only gained one of each. If we harvest again, we'll gain a lot more!2bb_card_front_48676de84bc778f00
NekonyancerAll the resources we gained went into our *storage,* which can hold up to *9* resources at once. [blue]That's it for our turn! Now our opponent will play a card.[/blue]3token_rye_64676de84bc778f00
NekonyancerOur opponent also chose to [blue]harvest.[/blue] As you can see in their own *harvest column* (just above the top-right corner), they got two *barley* (brown).1bb_card_front_59676de851e31d500
NekonyancerIn addition, we *exchanged hands* with our opponent! This will happen every time the second player finishes their turn, but only in [green]fruitful[/green] years.2bb_card_front_32676de851e31d500year_id 2
NekonyancerThe long scroll near the right edge of the board keeps track of the game's six years. Each year is marked as either [green]fruitful[/green] or [red]dry.[/red] The [blue]*year tracker*[/blue] is covering the first year's space, but you can tell from the pattern that it's a [green]fruitful[/green] one.3bb_card_front_32676de851e31d500year_id 2
NekonyancerLet's take our next turn. I think we should harvest again. Do you remember what I told you about *harvest columns?* If we harvested with [blue]*this*[/blue] card, which has 1 water and 1 barley on it, how many resources would we get?4bb_card_front_22676de851e31d500bb_card_front_22 7
NekonyancerWell, the card would go into our harvest column, and since it has 1 water icon and 1 barley icon, we'd count up *all* our water and barley icons, including those on the card we played last turn. [blue]That means we'd get 3 resources: 2 water and 1 barley![/blue]5bb_card_front_48676de851e31d500
NekonyancerWith that in mind, I think our choice for harvesting is pretty clear. *Select the [red]last card[/red] in our hand. [blue]Harvest![/blue]*6bb_card_front_14676de851e31d510bb_card_front_14 6
Nekonyancer[green]*Confirm*[/green] again! I'll fast-forward through confirm steps from now on.1confirm_btn676de858badc610confirm_btn 3
Nekonyancer*Great!* We gained 2 water, 2 wheat, and 2 rye, completely filling up our storage. We should be careful about acquiring too much. If we do, we'll have to offer some resources (new ones or old ones) to our opponent. After all, our villages have a *friendly* rivalry, and no one wants to see good crops go to waste!1token_wheat_30676de859a758100
NekonyancerYou've probably already noticed that the resources we've been harvesting come from the *fields.* There's one field for each resource, plus a river for water.2token_wheat_33676de859a758100
NekonyancerThere's a [green]green number[/green] and a [red]red number[/red] in front of each field, showing how many resource tokens are available at the start of each [green]fruitful[/green] and [red]dry[/red] year. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67836fbde6a3d4.18437397.jpg[/img] For example, there are *7* wheat tokens in each fruitful year and *5* in each dry year.3field_wheat_5676de859a758100
NekonyancerOur opponent took another turn, and then we exchanged hands again. Since our storage is full, let's learn about the [red]Produce and Sell[/red] action!1token_wheat_30676de860387a500
NekonyancerAll the relevant information for [red]Produce and Sell[/red] is in the *middle* of each card. [blue]This includes...[/blue] - the kind of *item* produced (beer or bread). - the required *ingredients.* - how many *coins* we'll get.2maintitlebar_content676de860387a500
NekonyancerFor example, [blue]*this card...*[/blue] - produces bread. - requires water, 2 rye, and 2 wheat. - yields 7 coins. Looks pretty good to me! *Select [blue]this card.[/blue] Click on [red]"Produce and Sell"[/red] at the top!*4bb_card_front_55676de860387a510produce_btn 1 bb_card_front_55 7
Nekonyancer*Great!* It looked like the resources we spent flew back to their respective fields, but that wouldn't make any sense, would it? They went to the game's stockpile of extra, unharvestable tokens. As for the card, it was placed on our [blue]*Bakery.*[/blue]1field_rye_1676de8dab8a2b00
NekonyancerOnly one card can be in the [blue]*bakery*[/blue] at a time. If we want to bake more bread, we'll have to *clean* it first! The same goes for our [red]*brewery;*[/red] after we brew beer, we'll have to *clean* it before brewing again!2bb_card_front_55676de8dab8a2b00brewery_1 6 bb_card_front_55 7
NekonyancerNext, let's learn about the [green]*Clean and Upgrade*[/green] action. *Cleaning* involves moving cards from our bakery and brewery into a scoring pile so we can bake and brew again. *Upgrading* will give us some sort of bonus for the rest of the game.1maintitlebar_content676de92e2a5fb00
NekonyancerEach card has an upgrade shown at the bottom. They're too small to read, but you can *hover* over them to see a magnified image. I like [blue]*this card's*[/blue] upgrade. Let's take it! *Select [blue]this card.[/blue] Click on [green]"Clean and Upgrade"[/green] at the top!*2bb_card_front_58676de92e2a5fb10clean_btn 3 bb_card_front_58 7
NekonyancerGreat! BGA will keep track of our upgrades by tucking them under the bottom edge of the board.1bb_card_front_58676de93e0d26b00
NekonyancerThere's only one card left this year! We can't produce this card's beer - it requires 2 barley, and we don't have any. So what do you think we should do? [blue]Harvest and Store?[/blue] Or [green]Clean and Upgrade?[/green]1bb_card_front_6676de94d37b4c00
NekonyancerIf we Harvest and Store, we'll completely fill up our storage, and we'll only have 3 of the 5 different resource types, so we might not be able to produce anything. Let's just upgrade for now. Better to harvest when we know what we're harvesting for. *Select the card. [green]Upgrade![/green]*2bb_card_front_6676de94d37b4c10clean_btn 3
NekonyancerHmm. Our opponent seems to be having trouble managing their resources. They acquired more than they can store, so they now have to *offer* their extra resources to us!1maintitlebar_content676de9a2ee59c00
NekonyancerThey offered 3 barley and 2 water. We can take as much of it as we have room for. Anything we don't take will go to waste. Hmm... let's take 2 barley and 1 water. *Click on [red]these two resources[/red] to tell BGA we don't want them. Then continue.*1maintitlebar_content676de9b002fc700field_barley_4 1 field_water_11 1
Nekonyancer*That was the end of the year!* BGA took care of several small administrative steps to prepare for the new year. First of all, each player picked up all the cards in their harvest column and then drew new cards until they had a complete hand of *5* cards.1bb_card_front_48676de9d0ec37000
NekonyancerThe [blue]*year tracker*[/blue] advanced to the next space - a [red]dry year[/red] - on the scroll. Each resource field was accordingly restocked. As you can see, there are far fewer resources to go around this time!2year_id676de9d0ec37000year_id 2
NekonyancerAt the beginning of each year, whoever has fewer stored resources takes the [blue]*Windmill,*[/blue] becoming the first player. Our opponent has more stored resources, thanks to one of their upgrades, so we kept it!4windmill_id676de9d0ec37000windmill_id 2
NekonyancerThe second year will play out very similarly to the first year - players will take turns playing cards, each time performing one of three actions. But there's one important change: players do *NOT* exchange hands during dry years!5maintitlebar_content676de9d0ec37000
NekonyancerInstead, players have access to three extra cards, which were placed face up next to the board. You can consider them an extra hand that we *share* with our opponent. Whenever we use one of the shared cards, we must *replace* it with a card from our hand.6bb_card_front_56676de9d0ec37000
NekonyancerLet's use one of the shared cards to upgrade our storage! *1. Select the two indicated cards.* The shared card will be used to upgrade. The one in our hand will replace it. *2. [green]Upgrade![/green]* 7clean_btn676de9d0ec37010clean_btn 3 bb_card_front_47 16 bb_card_front_48 16
Nekonyancer[blue]Okay, I think you've seen enough![/blue] At the end of the *sixth* year, BGA will count up all our coins from sold beer and bread. Cards that haven't been cleaned out of our bakery and brewery still count as sold. BGA will also take certain upgrades into account to get a *total beer score* and *total bread score* for each player. Each player's lower score becomes their actual, final score. [green]Whoever has the highest score wins the game![/green]1maintitlebar_content676dea04557a100
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Beer & Bread!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! Big thank yous go out to... • *Scott Almes* for designing this game. • *Deep Print Games* for publishing. • *tchobello* for bringing it to BGA. Have fun! :D2maintitlebar_content676dea04557a100
