Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed8aa45174.86937118.jpg[/img] You are vying for the throne of the kingdom! To get it, you'll have to make the best choices to develop your duchy faster and better than your opponent! [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1player_name_92143487000
NekonyancerA game of *It's a Wonderful Kingdom* consists of four rounds. In each round, players will allocate and claim cards from 2 piles, called *offers.* Afterward, players must choose to either *build* each card or *recycle* it for precious cubes. Once constructed, cards will grant more cubes and victory points. [green]At the end of the game, whoever has the most points wins![/green]2player_name_92143487000
Nekonyancer[blue]Each round is split into four phases:[/blue] *1. Choice* *2. Planning* *3. Production* *4. Fight* You can always check the current round and phase [red]*here!*[/red]3wk_phase000wk_phase 1
Nekonyancer[blue]*Phase A: Choice*[/blue]---At the beginning of each Choice phase, each player is dealt a [red]*hand of 8 cards.*[/red] 7 of them are normal *Development cards.* The 8th is a *Menace card* that matches each player's specific faction.4zone_highlight_zone_hand000zone_highlight_zone_hand 1
NekonyancerFor example, we are playing as the [blue]*Frost Giants,*[/blue] so the [red]*Menace card in our hand*[/red] is a Frost Giant. Our opponent is playing as the Giant Rats, so they have 1 Giant Rat in their hand.5wk_panel_threat_1000wk_target_7 1 wk_panel_threat_1 2
NekonyancerWe're up first. We must select two cards from our hand and put them into these two [blue]*"offers."*[/blue] Afterward, our opponent will take all the cards from one of them.7player_name_92143487000zone_offer_1 7 zone_offer_2 7
NekonyancerLet's try it! *1.* Select *Tax Office.* (1st card on the left) *2.* Click on *"Offer 1"* at the top or click on the [blue]*Offer 1 area.*[/blue] *3.* Select *"Port."* (2nd card on the left) *4.* Click on the *"Offer 2"* button or [red]*area.*[/red] *5.* Click on *"Confirm!"*8player_name_92143487010zone_offer_1 2 zone_offer_2 1 wk_card_back_3 17 wk_card_back_5 19
Nekonyancer*Great!* Now our opponent will select one of the offers...1player_name_92143487660355af0e99200
Nekonyancer[blue]... and that's one complete turn![/blue] Now our roles will switch. Our opponent will put two cards in the offers, and we'll take all the cards from one of them.1player_name_92143487660355b599da000
NekonyancerThey added both of their two cards to Offer 1. Hmm... I like the cards in Offer 2 better. *Click on the Offer 2 box or the button at the top.*1player_name_92143487660355d6e7d9510take_offer_2 16 zone_highlight_zone_offer_2 18
Nekonyancer*Excellent.* This will continue until each player has allocated and chosen cards *four times.* But before we play through all that, let's learn more about cards and cubes so we can understand *why* we might value certain cards over others!1player_name_92143487660355e1bf80900
NekonyancerWe'll start with the [blue]*Duchy*[/blue] card. Each player starts with one. You'll have to scroll down to find it. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed8abef920.88091883.jpg[/img]2player_name_92143487660355e1bf80900zone_fief_1 7 wk_card_back_1 2
NekonyancerThe most important info on the card is in the top-right corner: *Victory Points* and *Resource production.* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed8add6910.63110007.jpg[/img] Our Duchy card is worth [green]2 VP[/green] for each blue card we have at the end of the game. During the *Production Phase,* we'll produce 3 gray cubes and 1 blue cube.3wk_card_back_1660355e1bf80900
NekonyancerScroll down a little further. Our opponent's [red]*duchy*[/red] card is similar, but it grants 2 points for each yellow card they have. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed8b053159.64543643.jpg[/img]4player_name_92143487660355e1bf80900zone_fief_2 6 wk_card_back_2 1
Nekonyancer*Development cards* are a little more complicated. Scroll back up and take a look at the [red]*Banquet Hall,*[/red] in Offer 1. The bottom is similar to a Duchy card, featuring VP and production.5wk_card_back_13660355e1bf80900wk_card_back_13 1
Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed8b2f3612.05061831.jpg[/img] In this case, the [red]*Banquet Hall*[/red] is worth 2 points and produces 1 purple cube per yellow card the player has already constructed. The icon in the bottom-right corner simply indicates the color of the card.6wk_card_back_13660355e1bf80900wk_card_back_13 1
NekonyancerAlong the top, we can see each card's *construction cost* and *recycling bonus.* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed8b552eb6.29447399.jpg[/img] The Banquet Hall costs 3 yellow cubes to construct. If it is recycled, it will instantly grant 1 purple cube that can be used to construct something else. We'll see all of that in action later.7wk_card_back_13660355e1bf80900
NekonyancerSome cards, like [blue]*Ancient Ruins,*[/blue] have a *Construction Bonus.* If a player constructs this card, they will immediately gain the bonus shown - *3 Krystallium,* in this case. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed8b6e93b8.73484641.jpg[/img] [green][tip] Krystallium is a rare resource that we'll learn more about later.[/green]8wk_target_1660355e1bf80900wk_target_1 2
NekonyancerNow that we know more about cards, let's think about our next turn. Remember, our opponent will score 2 points for each yellow card, thanks to their *Duchy* card. Both the [red]*Banquet Hall*[/red] and the [blue]*Secret Fellowship*[/blue] have strong synergies with yellow cards!9wk_card_back_14660355e1bf80900wk_card_back_13 1 wk_card_back_14 2
NekonyancerThe most straightforward way to block them would be to add our [red]*Menace card*[/red] - remember, we get 1 per hand - to Offer 1. Menace cards are worth negative points and incur other penalties until the player manages to get rid of them!10wk_target_5660355e1bf80900wk_target_5 1
NekonyancerBut I have something sneakier in mind. Let's use a [red]*Trap Token.*[/red] Each player has 2 of them, and we can use each of them once per round. Each Trap Token allows us to play a card *face-down* instead of face-up! If we use a token to play a face-down card in Offer 1, our opponent might not pick it for fear of taking a Menace card!11wk_panel_bluff_1_1660355e1bf80900wk_panel_bluff_1_1 1 wk_panel_bluff_1_2 1
Nekonyancer*1.* Select *Ancient Ruins.* (2nd from the left) *2.* Click on *"Offer 1 (with Trap)."* *3.* Select the nameless card on the left. *4.* Click on *"Offer 2"* or the Offer 2 area. *5.* Click on *"Confirm!"*13player_name_92143487660355e1bf80910wk_card_back_4 19 wk_card_back_6 17
Nekonyancer*Good!* By the way, the nameless card we played is a [red]*Treasure Card.*[/red] It can't be built, but it provides 2 cubes instead of 1 when recycled. Don't worry, we'll get to that stuff soon. [red]Let's see what our opponent picks...[/red]1player_name_921434876603562cd4a6400wk_card_back_4 1
Nekonyancer[red]Hah! They fell for it and took Offer 2![/red] But keep a straight face. It's their turn to allocate cards, and they'll do it with their false assumption in mind.1player_name_9214348766035633ac8b400
Nekonyancer[blue]They put 1 card in Offer 1 and 1 in Offer 2.[/blue] Four cards versus one card. Since we know the face-down card is nothing to worry about, this is hardly a tough decision! *Pick Offer 1!*1player_name_92143487660356672800810take_offer_1 16
NekonyancerWe still have one more trap token. Let's use it! *1.* Play the *Gigantic Mine* in Offer 2 (with Trap). *2.* Play the *Treasure card* in Offer 2. *3.* Confirm!2wk_panel_bluff_1_16603566a993fb10wk_panel_bluff_1_1 1
NekonyancerOur opponent is making their choice! [red]Don't laugh, or you'll give us away![/red]1player_name_9214348766035689d2d8b00
Nekonyancer*Hah!* Again, our opponent was so afraid of taking our Menace card that they picked *Offer 1* - which had 0 cards in it - over *Offer 2!* [green]I almost feel sorry for them.[/green]1player_name_921434876603568d5f7b100
NekonyancerOkay, I think you get the idea of how the *Choice Phase* works. When everyone's hands are empty and each player has chosen an offer four times, we'll move onto the *Planning Phase.* [blue]I'll fast-forward to that point now.[/blue]2player_name_921434876603568d5f7b100
Nekonyancer[blue]*Phase B: Planning*[/blue]---At the beginning of this phase, any face-down cards we acquired are revealed. We must decide what to do with our cards. Each one can either be... [blue]- Slated for construction[/blue] OR [blue]- Recycled for a resource.[/blue]1player_name_9214348766035791cce5600
Nekonyancer[blue]If a card is slated for construction,[/blue] it will be moved into [red]*this box.*[/red] [blue]If a card is recycled,[/blue] we'll get the resource shown in the top-right corner of the card. We can then place that resource on a card that's under construction!3zone_construction_166035791cce5600zone_construction_1 1
NekonyancerWe have quite a few cards to go through. [blue]Let's get started![/blue] *Slate [red]these cards[/red] for construction by clicking "Build" on each one.* Then continue to the next step.4player_name_9214348766035791cce5600wk_card_back_5 1 wk_card_back_20 1 wk_card_back_12 1 wk_card_front_8 1 wk_card_back_8 1 wk_card_back_15 1 wk_card_front_6 1 wk_card_back_6 1
NekonyancerAs you can see, we got stuck with our own [red]*Frost Giant.*[/red] As a Menace card, it *MUST* be built. When a Frost Giant is built, it locks up another card in our Construction Box. We won't be able to build that other card until we deal with the Frost Giant. And if we don't deal with the Giant by the end of the game, we'll lose 5 points! 5wk_card_back_1166035791cce5600wk_card_back_11 1
NekonyancerThe [red]*Dragon Egg*[/red] card is worth a lot of points at the end of the game, but it doesn't produce any cubes. It's a good candidate for freezing. *1.* Build the *Frost Giant.* *2.* Freeze the *Dragon Egg.* *3. Continue* to the next step.6wk_card_back_1166035791cce5600wk_card_back_11 17 wk_card_back_15 1
NekonyancerThere are five cards remaining. Let's *recycle* them. Remember, each card will instantly give us the cube in the top-right corner of the card when recycled. Again, the card in the middle is a [red]*Treasure card,*[/red] which gives 2 cubes when recycled. *Click "Recycle" on each card. Then continue.*7player_name_9214348766035791cce5600wk_card_back_9 1
NekonyancerYou should be able to see all the cubes we gained from recycling at the other end of [red]*this bar.*[/red] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed8b8d4543.59045574.jpg[/img] Next, we'll place those cubes on the cards we slated for construction.8zone_title_166035791cce5600zone_title_1 1
NekonyancerWe should prioritize any card with cubes along the bottom of the card. If we complete those cards, we'll gain those cubes during each Production phase! *Place our blue cubes on the [red]Silmara Vortex.[/red] Place the purple and yellow cubes on the [green]Gigantic Mine.[/green]*9wk_card_back_1266035791cce5600wk_card_back_12 1 wk_card_back_8 3
NekonyancerOkay! We used every card we acquired, so we're done! *Click on continue. I'll [red]end our turn[/red] for us.*11player_name_9214348766035791cce5600
Nekonyancer[blue]*Phase C: Production*[/blue]---During this phase, each player will produce resource cubes from their Duchy card and completed Development cards. [green]In our case, we don't have any completed Development cards, but our Duchy card will give us 3 gray cubes and 1 blue cube.[/green] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed8baaf345.42170968.jpg[/img]1wk_phase660358723047700wk_phase 2
NekonyancerThere's a strict order in which cubes are produced, clearly shown by this handy board at the top. [green]According to that board, gray cubes will be produced first![/green]2wk_board660358723047700
NekonyancerEach time cubes are produced, whoever produces more of that particular color will add a *Soldier token* to their [blue]*Training Area.*[/blue] If they already have a soldier in their Training area, they'll instead move that token to their inventory. [green]In other words, they gain *half* of a soldier each time.[/green]3wk_panel_supremacy_1660358723047700wk_panel_supremacy_1 2 wk_panel_supremacy_2 2
NekonyancerEach player just produced their *gray* cubes, and we were tied at [blue]*3.*[/blue] Since neither player produced more, neither player gets half a soldier!4wk_panel_production_1_1660358723047700wk_panel_production_1_1 2 wk_panel_production_2_1 2
NekonyancerWe can now allocate our 3 gray cubes, just like we did with recycled cards in the Planning phase. *Allocate all three to the Port card.* The card should have moved to our [blue]*Fief*[/blue] area. It will start producing cubes from now on!5wk_card_back_5660358723047700
Nekonyancer*Click on [red]"End my turn"[/red] at the top. Then [red]"Confirm."[/red]* ... Yeah, I know, it didn't work. Don't worry, it will work in a real game. *Click on Continue* instead.6maintitlebar_content660358723047700
NekonyancerWe moved on to *Purple.* We produced [red]*0*[/red] purple cubes, but our opponent produced [red]*1,*[/red] so they now have a soldier in their [blue]*Training Area.*[/blue]1wk_panel_production_1_2660358a54a8b400wk_panel_production_1_2 1 wk_panel_production_2_2 1 wk_panel_supremacy_2 2
NekonyancerOkay, now we're on *yellow!* Again, we didn't produce [red]*any,*[/red] but our opponent produced [red]*1.*[/red] Their soldier finished training and joined their [blue]*army,*[/blue] which you'll probably have to *scroll down* to see. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed8be7be35.99757723.jpg[/img] Wow, they're up to 4 soldiers now!1wk_panel_production_1_3660358b63793c00wk_stock_2 2 wk_panel_production_1_3 1 wk_panel_production_2_3 1
NekonyancerHmm... while we have our screen on our opponent, take a look at their [blue]*Construction box.*[/blue] They just produced a yellow cube, but they don't have any cards slated for construction that require yellow. They're not allowed to save the resource for later. They have no choice but to [red]send it to Alchemy.[/red]2zone_construction_2660358b63793c00zone_construction_2 2
NekonyancerWhen a player has sent 5 cubes to [blue]*Alchemy,*[/blue] they are all transmuted into a single cube of [red]*Krystallium.*[/red] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed8bc6daf6.31476436.jpg[/img] [red]*Krystallium*[/red] can be used as cubes of any color. There are also some cards that specifically require Krystallium for construction.1wk_stock_2_7660358c3151b700wk_stock_2_7 2 wk_panel_supremacy_1 1
Nekonyancer[blue]We moved on to blue cubes![/blue] We produced [red]*2,*[/red] and our opponent produced [red]*0,*[/red] so a soldier was added to our [blue]*Training Area.*[/blue]2wk_panel_supremacy_1660358c3151b700wk_panel_production_1_4 1 wk_panel_supremacy_1 2 wk_panel_production_2_4 1
NekonyancerNote the option at the top of the screen to send those cubes to *Alchemy.* We're not going to use it. *Add both cubes to the [red]Silmara Vortex,[/red] completing it!* When you continue, I'll end our turn for us.3player_name_92143487660358c3151b700wk_card_back_12 1
Nekonyancer[blue]*Phase D: Fight*[/blue]---This phase is simple. Players can use *Soldier tokens* to destroy Menaces. We'll need four soldiers to defeat the [red]*Frost Giant.*[/red] We currently have 0 - well, [blue]*1/2,*[/blue] actually - so the Giant will stick around for now.1wk_card_back_11660358e238fff00wk_card_back_11 1 wk_panel_supremacy_1 2
Nekonyancer[blue]Okay, that was one complete round![/blue] There were some leftover cards in the offers from Round 1. Those were discarded, and one new random card was placed in each offer. Each player then got a new hand of 8 cards!2player_name_92143487660358e23be4d00
Nekonyancer*Okay, that's everything!* [green]After 4 rounds, the game will end, and whoever has the most points wins![/green] *Tiebreaker 1:* Number of constructed cards. *Tiebreaker 2:* Number of leftover soldier tokens.3player_name_92143487660358e23be4d00
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for It's a Wonderful Kingdom!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message!
