3p1cFr3nzyWelcome to Wingspan - a moderately complex, engine-building game about creating the best wildlife preserve!
This tutorial will cover all the basic actions you can do on your turn, all general bird card information and most importantly, how to win the game!
*Can the birds in your wildlife preserve help glide your way to victory?* 1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000location_click_19 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWNkNTA1N2FmMC45MTU5NDY2OC5qcGVn/-387/-121
3p1cFr3nzyTo win, you must obtain the most victory points after the end of Round 4 through playing elegantly illustrated birds, meeting objectives and much more!
*Please note: this tutorial should last no more than 30 minutes, but no rush to get through it in this amount of time.*
[blue] [tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a PC. For phone users, you may need to minimise messages to take actions. [/blue]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
3p1cFr3nzy*Let's swoop right into the game!*

3p1cFr3nzyAt the start of the game, everyone will get to choose up to 5 bird cards and 1 bonus card (an objective to work toward), where you must discard 1 [red]food token[/red] for every bird card you keep (you get one of each type at the start). You can find your current victory points and your inventory in the [blue]well-laid out summary[/blue] near your in-game name :) 1location_click_9635ab3183b9ec01playerboard_icon_food_0_92858672 6 playerboard_icon_food_1_92858672 6 playerboard_icon_food_2_92858672 6 playerboard_icon_food_3_92858672 6 playerboard_icon_food_4_92858672 6 overall_player_board_92858672 2
3p1cFr3nzyFor this game, we chose to keep the [red]Killdeer[/red] and the [blue]Horned Lark[/blue] and discarded a fish and rodent food token.
We also kept the [green]Viticulturalist[/green] bonus card, which tells us to try and play birds which can be played using fruit tokens.
[green] [tip] It is a good idea to try and work towards the bonus card objective, but sometimes you cannot fulfil it and that's fine. [/green]2handcard_bird_panel_90635ab3183b9ec00handcard_bird_panel_96 6 handcard_bird_panel_90 7 handcard_bonus_panel_23 8
3p1cFr3nzyFor the bird cards, why would keep these particular cards and discard the particular food tokens selected? Let's find out how food tokens and playing birds work:3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment635ab3183b9ec00
3p1cFr3nzy[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ecd533b320.77163215.png[/img]
In this game we have 5 different food types, which can be used to play birds into our wildlife preserve. When playing a bird, you must take into account the [red]*food cost*[/red] of the bird, as well as the [blue]*habitats*[/blue] the bird can be placed into.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ecd556e822.93226657.png[/img]
Food types from left to right: Invertebrate, Seed, Fish, Fruit, Rodent, Any type.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment635ab3183b9ec00
3p1cFr3nzyFor example, the [green]*Killdeer*[/green] can be placed into either the [red]*grassland*[/red] or the [blue]*wetland*[/blue] and requires either a seed *or* invertebrate token to play.
[tip] A *+* sign means more than one food token and a */* sign means any one of the types of food token.5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment635ab3183b9ec00location_click_17 6 location_click_25 7 handcard_bird_panel_96 8
3p1cFr3nzyEnough said, let's see what 3p1cFr3nzy does on his first turn, as he has the [red]first player token[/red]. All players will then take turns separately (in the same order) until the end of each round.
[tip] The first player to take a turn changes at the end of every round.

3p1cFr3nzy3p1cFr3nzy just played a *Mallard* into the wetland! Why don't we play the [blue]Killdeer[/blue] into our [red]grassland[/red] using a seed token? 1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment635ab326a267600
3p1cFr3nzy[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ecd5799019.84361268.png[/img]
To play the [blue]*Killdeer*[/blue], please select the card highlighted, then select [red]*the grassland space highlighted*[/red]. Finally, click on the seed token at the top and select *Confirm food cost* to play the bird.
!!! If you make an incorrect move at any point, please press *Cancel* or *Reset Food* to undo your action. 2location_click_28635ab326a267611location_click_17 6 handcard_bird_panel_96 7
3p1cFr3nzyAwesome job!
What else can we do on our turn? Let's look at the *four different* actions we can take:1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment635ab3521f73b00
3p1cFr3nzyAs well as playing birds from our hand, we can also:
[green]Gain *food tokens* from the *birdfeeder* (below your mat) in the *forest*[/green] ... 2location_click_25635ab3521f73b01location_click_9 8 feeder_img 8
3p1cFr3nzy[red]Lay *eggs on birds* in the *grassland*[/red] ...3location_click_18635ab3521f73b00location_click_18 6
3p1cFr3nzyor *draw cards* from *(see below)* [green]*displayed cards in the tray*[/green] or [red]*from the deck*[/red] in the [blue]*wetland*[/blue]. The tray holds up to *3 face up cards* at any one time and is refilled *after every turn*.4location_click_25635ab3521f73b00location_click_25 7 traycard_0_click 8 traycard_1_click 8 traycard_2_click 8 bird_draw_click 6
3p1cFr3nzyThe areas highlighted on your *player mat* show you the strength of that particular action that we can use currently. This is the *leftmost exposed space* on your mat for each habitat.
[tip] This game will also highlight these spaces for you on your turn in-game if you are ever in doubt :)5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment635ab3521f73b00location_click_9 8 location_click_18 6 location_click_25 7
3p1cFr3nzySo to recap, you can do only *one* of four actions on your turn:
- Play a bird (always starting from the left of the habitat)
- Gain food from the birdfeeder
- Lay eggs on birds
- Draw cards
*Playing birds* makes at least one of the other 3 actions more efficient (more powerful).6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment635ab3521f73b00
3p1cFr3nzyLet's get some food to play our *Horned Lark*! (Find the [blue]*birdfeeder*[/blue] highlighted)1location_click_25635ab36fe5d8d01feeder_img 7
3p1cFr3nzy*How does the birdfeeder work?*
At the start of the game, 5 dice will be thrown down the interior of the feeder before coming out [red]at the bottom.[/red] 5 of the die faces contain 1 of each of the food token types, as well as a 6th face which gives you the choice of either an invertebrate or a seed token! Once you choose a die face, [blue]it is removed from the feeder[/blue], reducing the available options.2handcard_bonus_panel_23635ab36fe5d8d01dice_pit 6 feeder_outside 7
3p1cFr3nzy[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ecd59734d0.80836726.png[/img]
Let's take a seed die to let us play the Horned Lark!
Select *Gain food* at the top or click on [green] the space on your player mat highlighted[/green], then select the die showing a seed. Then press *Confirm*.
You can also click on the seed token icon highlighted next to the feeder to take the food instead of clicking the seed die.3hand_zone_panel635ab36fe5d8d11gain_food 8 location_click_9 3 food_1_pile 6
3p1cFr3nzyWell done! Now we have enough food for the [red]*Horned Lark*[/red]!1handcard_bird_panel_90635ab3b405ede01handcard_bird_panel_90 1
3p1cFr3nzyWhile we are at the birdfeeder, you may notice this [blue]*round bonus mat*[/blue], in which you will compete for bonus points at the end of every round! The [red]*targeted item*[/red] you will compete in will change every round.
!!! You must have *at least one* of the targeted items shown to gain bonus points.
[tip] You can get a lot of bonus points from here so make sure not to ignore these bonuses!2handcard_bonus_panel_23635ab3b405ede01goal_0 6 goal_1 6 goal_2 6 goal_3 6 goal_board_img 7
3p1cFr3nzyLet's play our [red]*Horned Lark*[/red] into the grassland!
Wait a second ...1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment635ab40db794d01location_click_18 2 handcard_bird_panel_90 6
3p1cFr3nzyTo play a bird in the second column, we need an egg. Well then, I guess we can't play it yet :/
Any birds played in the [blue]second or third column[/blue] require *one* egg to play, and ones in the [green]fourth or fifth column[/green] require *two* eggs!
2location_click_25635ab40db794d01payegg_2 7 payegg_3 7 payegg_4 8 payegg_5 8
3p1cFr3nzy[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ecd5ce07f9.67908395.png[/img]
Let's lay eggs instead then. Choose the *Lay eggs* action or [red]the grassland space highlighted[/red] and lay 2 eggs on the Killdeer. Also, given the space we are on, let's discard a *fruit token* at the top to lay an additional egg.
[tip] [blue]The spaces highlighted in blue[/blue] on the player mat are where you can also take these discard actions - but you can only do them *once* per turn.3location_click_29635ab40db794d11lay_eggs 6 location_click_10 7 location_click_12 7 location_click_18 6 location_click_20 7 location_click_26 7 location_click_28 7 playerboard_icon_foodhand_3_92858672 1
3p1cFr3nzy[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ecd5e9f262.80761348.png[/img]
Now here is where habitat combos come in - *every* bird in the habitat where the action takes place can activate their ability, which is given by their *brown power*.
[tip] The bird activations start from the *rightmost* bird and end on the *leftmost* bird.1location_click_28635ab47a4203d01
3p1cFr3nzyWhy don't we use the *Killdeer* ability? Click on the [blue]*Killdeer*[/blue] to discard an egg and then select the [green]*Western Meadowlark*[/green] from the tray.
[tip] You do not have to activate a bird's ability if you do not want to during a game.2location_click_29635ab47a4203d11location_click_17 7 traycard_2_click 8
3p1cFr3nzyThe remaining birds in the tray do not seem to be very useful, so let's *draw from the deck!* (You can select the deck or the option above to continue :) )1location_click_21635ab48e32c8b11draw_birds_deck 1 bird_draw_click 16
3p1cFr3nzyYou're getting the hang of it now!
(The 'draw cards' action in the Wetland works the same as drawing cards using the Killdeer ability)
[tip] Killdeer is an amazing card if you get it early on - you can draw cards in the grassland instead of the wetland *and* lay eggs!1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment635ab4916dfeb00
3p1cFr3nzyOkay let's now play the [blue]*Horned Lark*[/blue]. The game will automatically select the food and habitat for you this time :)
[tip] If you do not have the right food requirements, you may trade in *any two* food tokens for *one* food token of your choice from the supply (only when playing a bird). The 2 food tokens do not have to be the same type.1location_click_28635ab4a3a309f11handcard_bird_panel_90 2
3p1cFr3nzyHere we played a bird with a different ability - *Once between turns!*
This ability allows you to benefit if someone else takes the action stated in the ability description.
[tip] As the name suggests, if multiple people take that particular action between your turns, you can only benefit *once*.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment635ab4be184da00
3p1cFr3nzyLet's work towards playing the [blue]*Western Meadowlark*[/blue]. But there's only fish left in the feeder :(
*No need to worry* - a great thing about the birdfeeder is that if there is *only one type* of food left or *no food at all*, you can reroll all dice for free! Awesome :) 1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment635ab4f0b735a01
3p1cFr3nzy[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ecd6188dc1.26056925.png[/img]
Let's do exactly that. Select *Gain food* then *'Reroll'* at the top.2location_click_17635ab4f0b735a11gain_food 8
3p1cFr3nzyCan you pick the food that will help us work towards playing the [blue]Meadowlark[/blue]?
I have faith in you 8)1location_click_25635ab53b313fa11handcard_bird_panel_154 7
3p1cFr3nzyGood stuff! But we will need a seed token as well..1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment635ab545779a400
3p1cFr3nzyLooks like 3p1cFr3nzy just triggered our *Horned Lark* ability! Let's tuck the [red]*Anhinga*[/red] under the Lark to gain a point.
[tip] Every tucked card is worth 1 point at the end of the game!1location_click_29635ab55b6ea5511handcard_bird_panel_11 6
3p1cFr3nzyNow it's your turn to take an action! Can you:
[red]- Lay 2 eggs on the Killdeer and one on the Horned Lark. (Lay eggs on the Killdeer first)[/red]
[green]- Discard the egg on the Horned Lark to take the *Turkey Vulture* from the tray and a random card from the deck. [/green]
Good luck! :$1dockbutton_above635ab55f5125f10
3p1cFr3nzyGreat start! Can you remember the rest?
(Just be careful of softlocks here: Please select the *lark* to discard an egg then select the *turkey vulture*)1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment635ab5733120c10
3p1cFr3nzyYou did it! Looks like you didn't need much guidance :P 1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment635ab594835a800
3p1cFr3nzyYou may have noticed that the Killdeer could not hold more than 3 eggs. This is because each bird card has a [blue]maximum number of eggs it can hold[/blue], as well as a [red]nest type[/red], as shown below:
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ecd6aa47c7.96414616.png[/img]
The [green]number next to the feather icon[/green] also shows how many victory points the bird gives at the end of the game too :)2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment635ab594835a800
3p1cFr3nzyThere are 5 nest types in the game, where the *wild* nest type (star icon) can act as *any type* of nest! 3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment635ab594835a800
3p1cFr3nzyWe've covered almost all of the rule basics, so here are a few more things you should know before we finish: 4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment635ab594835a800
3p1cFr3nzyBirds can also have a 'When played', 'Cache food' and/or predator ability.
- *When played* abilities only trigger *once*.
- Cached food cannot be used for anything other than points at the end of the game.
- Predator birds may hunt for birds with small wingspans. The [red]wingspan value (in cm)[/red] is given to the bottom right of the bird picture.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ecd637f316.64988540.png[/img]5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment635ab594835a800
3p1cFr3nzyAt the end of each round, you will use one of your [green]action cubes[/green] for [blue]round bonus scoring[/blue], meaning that the number of turns per round *decreases by one* each round!
Also, [red]any face up cards in the tray[/red] will be discarded.
[tip] Prioritise playing high point birds over getting good combos at the end, or lay lots of eggs! (Eggs are worth 1 point each). Bonus card birds are also good too at the end.6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment635ab594835a801traycard_0_click 6 traycard_1_click 6 traycard_2_click 6 goal_board_img 7 playerboard_icon_cubes_92858672 8
3p1cFr3nzyYou will also gain 1 point for each egg, cached food and tucked card you have obtained throughout the game, as well as points from your bonus cards, birds and round bonus points. The player with the most points wins, and if it is a tie, the player with the most food left over wins! (If its still a tie, then the victory is shared)
(Please see the round bonus board for points if you tie with one or more players on a certain criteria)
