Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed50d84720.23737541.jpg[/img] You are the leader of a pack of wolves. With cunning–and maybe some killer instincts–perhaps you will establish your pack’s dominance. [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerOver the course of a moon cycle, you will stalk prey through the wilderness, recruit lone wolves to grow your pack, and fight with rival packs for control of territory. Having control of specific regions during specific moon phases will grant victory points. [green]After 1 full cycle, whoever has the most points wins![/green]2maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerThe map is comprised of one central region, featuring the *Central Chasm,* surrounded by six other regions. Boundaries between regions are clearly marked by [blue]*rivers.*[/blue] At the beginning of the game, each player must place two groups of starting wolves on empty spaces around the Chasm.3wolves-hex-selector-9-10000
NekonyancerThese placements will be done with a *Snake Draft* method. That means normal turn order for the first placement, and reverse turn order for the second. We're up first. *Click here to place your wolves!*4wolves-hex-selector-9-8010wolves-hex-selector-9-8 16
NekonyancerGood! As you can see, we placed two different kinds of wolves. The larger, howling one is an *Alpha Wolf.* The smaller one is a *Pack Wolf.* Most of your actions in the game will revolve around your Alpha Wolves! [blue]Now our opponents will place their wolves...[/blue]1wolves-piece-2655fdc148db2400
Nekonyancer*Click here to place your second group of wolves!*1wolves-hex-selector-5-9655fdc5ca9b8310wolves-hex-selector-5-9 16
NekonyancerNow the game will really begin! Scroll down until you find the *Rocky Wolf board.*1maintitlebar_content655fdc6e67a2e00
NekonyancerWe're playing as the *Rocky Wolves,* and this is our *Player Board.* All of our possible actions are written at the top of our board, along with their costs: [blue]Move: 1 Howl/Den/Lair: 2 Dominate: 3[/blue] We can perform (and pay for) *two* of these actions each turn. We can even perform the same action twice, if we want.2wolves-player-board-92146574655fdc6e67a2e00
NekonyancerOf course, wolves don't use money, so we'll use *Terrain Tiles* to pay for actions. Each player has exactly six of them. Each tile features a different terrain type on each side. The notches in the top-right and bottom-left corners show what type is on the other side.3wolves-player-container-92146574655fdc6e67a2e00
NekonyancerThe tile on the far left has no notches. That's because it features rocky terrain on both sides. We have this double-rock tile because we're playing as the *Rocky Wolves.* [green]It's our home terrain![/green] If you scroll down to the [red]Desert Wolves' board,[/red] you'll see that they have a double-Desert tile instead. [blue]This is the only difference between the wolf packs![/blue]4wolves-player-container-92146574655fdc6e67a2e00
NekonyancerWhen we flip Terrain Tiles to pay for actions, all the tiles we flip must match the terrain of the space we are *targeting.* We currently have two Rocky tiles ready to go, so we should try and find something to do on a Rocky space.5wolves-player-container-92146574655fdc6e67a2e00
NekonyancerThere's a *Lone Wolf* on this rocky space! We can use a *Howl* action on it! [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed50f36323.15450230.jpg[/img] Howling allows us to convert any Lone Wolf into one of our Pack Wolves, but it must be within Howling Range of one of our *Alpha Wolves.*6wolves-piece-2655fdc6e67a2e00
NekonyancerOn your board, it shows that our Howl Range is currently *2.* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed511df434.36759769.jpg[/img] Since it's annoying to constantly scroll down to check our board, the information is also displayed in our [red]*Player Information Panel.*[/red] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed51397c01.76991959.jpg[/img]7wolves-status-icon-howl-92146574655fdc6e67a2e00overall_player_board_92146574 1
Nekonyancer[red]Let's try it![/red] *1.* Click on Howl at the top. *2.* Select the two Rocky terrain tiles, starting with the one in the *middle.* *3.* Click on [blue]"Flip 2 tile(s)."[/blue] If it doesn't work, deselect and reselect them, then try again. BGA can be finicky sometimes. ^_^; 8player_name_92146574655fdc6e67a2e10
Nekonyancer*Excellent!* Now we can select a target. [red]*Click here!*[/red]1wolves-hex-selector-10-8655fdc825de1a10
Nekonyancer*Excellent!* The *Lone Wolf* Token was replaced with one of our *Pack Wolves!* The new Pack Wolf came off of our board. As you can see, the space it uncovered has 1 VP printed on it. At the end of the game, we'll score points for the highest revealed VP number in each category on our board. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed515222a3.08283889.jpg[/img] Also, the *3rd* and *6th* wolves we convert will become Alphas instead! If you like, you can scroll down to your board for a closer look!1wolves-region-2655fdc852e70200
NekonyancerHmm... The tile we flipped had Grass on the other side, so now we have two Grass tiles. Hey, there's another Lone Wolf on Grass over here! *Howl at it!* (Select the grass tile on the *left* first. Tutorials are finicky.)2wolves-piece-13655fdc852e70210
Nekonyancer*Select this Lone Wolf as the target!*1wolves-hex-selector-4-9655fdc94539b410
Nekonyancer*Great!* By the way, the Lone Wolf tokens were not removed from the game when they were removed from the board. Instead, they moved to the [blue]*Moonlight Board.*[/blue] Scroll down until you find it. Then continue.1maintitlebar_content655fdc956b74f00
NekonyancerThe [blue]*Moonlight board*[/blue] measures the players' progress through the game. Whenever a Lone Wolf (or some other objects) are removed from the board, they occupy a slot on the board. [blue]As you can see, the two Lone Wolf tokens we removed are now on Slots 1 and 2.[/blue]2wolves-piece-calendar-1655fdc956b74f00
NekonyancerWhenever a tile is placed on a space with a moon, it triggers a *scoring phase.* But since we're in a 3-player game right now, we'll ignore the spaces marked "2P." The [red]*star with a "!"*[/red] will keep us from getting confused. It always marks the next scoring phase.3wolves-calendar-space-8655fdc956b74f00wolves-marker-scoring 1
NekonyancerWhen a scoring phase is triggered, BGA will count each player's *influence* in each region marked with the corresponding Moon Phase. Each player piece contributes *one* influence, except for Lairs, which contribute *three.* We'll get into Lairs later.4wolves-calendar-space-8655fdc956b74f00
NekonyancerHmm, it looks like the *top-right* and *bottom-right* regions will trigger in the first scoring phase. (They feature waxing crescent moons and a star with a "!".) In each one, whoever has the most influence will gain *4 points.* 2nd place will gain *2.* [green]We might want to focus our efforts in those two regions moving forward![/green]5wolves-region-6655fdc956b74f00
NekonyancerNext turn! Let's use the *Move* action. To do so, we'll need to flip *one* terrain tile. Again, the kind of tile we flip determines what kind of space we can target. [blue]For example, if we flip a Rocky tile, we will only be able to move to Rocky areas.[/blue]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment655fdde5d043f00
NekonyancerLet's try it! *1.* Click on Move. *2.* Click on the leftmost Rocky tile. *3.* Click on [blue]"Flip 1 tile(s)!"[/blue]2player_name_92146574655fdde5d043f10
NekonyancerNow we can select wolves to move. In addition to being limited by terrain, they are limited by *distance.* Each wolf can move a number of spaces equal to our *Wolf Speed.* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed516fa793.65349611.jpg[/img] Right now, our speed is *3.* This info is also displayed in our [red]*Player Info Panel.*[/red] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed518c4584.96758815.jpg[/img]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment655fddfbd291e00
NekonyancerLet's try it! *1.* Select the *Alpha* wolf. (The howling one.) *2.* Move it to the indicated space. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed51a46602.66336795.jpg[/img]2maintitlebar_content655fddfbd291e10
Nekonyancer*Good!* But our movement turn isn't over yet. When we use a move action, we can move a number of wolves equal to our *Pack Spread.* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed51c01cf8.29121946.jpg[/img] Right now, our Pack Spread is *2.* This is also displayed in our [red]*Player Information Panel.*[/red] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed51db5b81.16685843.jpg[/img]1maintitlebar_content655fddfdaad7b00overall_player_board_92146574 1
NekonyancerNext, select the other Alpha wolf. Note that we can't move to [red]*this space,*[/red] even though it's exactly 3 spaces away. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed520be8a7.51836160.jpg[/img]2maintitlebar_content655fddfdaad7b00
NekonyancerThis is because chasms and water sources are *impassible.* Wolves have to go around them. (Water Sources refer to spaces with Moon Phase tokens on them. When the tokens are removed, you'll see that there are lakes printed underneath.) [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed52284180.98212010.jpg[/img] [blue]I guess wolves don't like swimming![/blue] ¯\_(ツ)_/¯3maintitlebar_content655fddfdaad7b00
NekonyancerYou know what? Let's let that Alpha wolf chill for a bit. *1.* Click on "Cancel" at the top. *2.* Select [red]*this wolf.*[/red] *3.* Move it to [red]*this spot.*[/red] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed5247fa82.39978358.jpg[/img]4maintitlebar_content655fddfdaad7b10
Nekonyancer*Good!* Another thing I have to mention about movement is that it is often restricted by rules about what sorts of pieces can *share* a space. I'm sure you've noticed that you can have an Alpha and a Pack Wolf in the same space. It's part of a larger rule: [blue]there can be a maximum of 2 player pieces in a single space.[/blue]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment655fde04c519200
Nekonyancer[blue]In addition...[/blue] - *Alpha wolves* from different packs can never share the same space. - *Pack wolves* from different packs can never share the same space. - An Alpha Wolf can briefly share a space with an enemy pack wolf, but it will immediately *scare* the pack wolf away to an adjacent space of the active player's choice.2maintitlebar_content655fde04c519200
Nekonyancer[red]We have one more action this turn. Let's build a Den![/red] The action costs 2 Terrain Tiles and allows us to move a Den from our board onto any space adjacent to one of our Alpha Wolves. It can also be placed *ON* the Alpha Wolf's space, but only if the Alpha wolf is alone there. [blue](Only 2 pieces per space!)[/blue]3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment655fde04c519200
NekonyancerWhen dens come off our Player Board, they uncover new numbers, strengthening one of our pack's *attributes* (pack spread, wolf speed, howl range). [red]Let's do it![/red] *1.* Click on "Build Den." *2.* Select the 2 rocky tiles, starting with the one on the far left. *3.* Click on [blue]"Flip 2 tile(s)!"[/blue]4player_name_92146574655fde04c519210
NekonyancerClick *here* to place the den! Then select *Pack Spread* at the top!1wolves-hex-selector-11-8655fde09d0b9a10wolves-hex-selector-11-8 16
Nekonyancer*Great!* If you scroll down to our Player Board, you'll see that we uncovered *3* under Pack Spread. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed5264cb07.15207470.jpg[/img] [blue]The next time we use a Move action, we'll be able to move 3 wolves instead of 2![/blue]1maintitlebar_content655fde16355f500
Nekonyancer[blue]A few more things to note about dens:[/blue] - The *3rd* and *5th* dens in each attribute category have *tokens* attached to them. If we play the den, we'll gain the connected token. We'll learn more about tokens later. - The *4th* and *5th* dens in each category also give [green]Victory Points![/green]2wolves-player-board-92146574655fde16355f500
Nekonyancer- You cannot build dens on spaces that have enemy pack wolves on them. - Wolves (of any type) can move onto enemy dens.3wolves-player-board-92146574655fde16355f500
NekonyancerLet's use another *Move* action. This time, we're going *hunting.* Hunting is not an actual action. If we position wolves in 3 spaces around a Prey token, it will happen automatically! *1.* Select "Move" at the top. *2.* Flip the *Grass* tile. *3.* Click on [blue]"Flip 1 tile(s)!"[/blue]1player_name_92146574655fdedf31c7110
NekonyancerLet's do it! *Move the indicated wolf to the indicated location!* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed527e4066.59327078.jpg[/img]1maintitlebar_content655fdfaaac43910
Nekonyancer*Good.* We have two more movements we can perform, but all the wolves in this region need to stay in position to take down the prey.1wolves-piece-23655fdfaf5d78500
Nekonyancer[blue]Did you see that? We claimed one of the tokens on this stack![/blue] Unfortunately, each player can only claim one of each type of prey. We'll have to leave the other token for someone else. *Now, if you scroll down to our Player Board...*1wolves-piece-24655fdfb958d7a00
Nekonyancer... you'll see that the prey token moved onto it, covering a space with [green]1 VP[/green] printed under it. The space also had a token on it, which was moved to our inventory.2wolves-player-board-92146574655fdfb958d7a00
NekonyancerIt's an [red]*Bonus Action token,*[/red] which, as you can probably guess, will give us an extra action when used.3wolves-status-icon-action-92146574655fdfb958d7a00wolves-status-icon-action-92146574 1
NekonyancerFor our other action, let's upgrade our den into a *Lair.* It costs 2 terrain tiles and can only be done if the den is... - Adjacent to (or sharing a space with) one of our *Alpha* wolves. - Adjacent to a *water source* (space that usually has a Moon token on it).4maintitlebar_content655fdfb958d7a00
Nekonyancer[red]Let's do it![/red] *1.* Click on "Upgrade Den." *2.* Select the two Rocky terrain tiles, starting with the center one. *3.* Click on [blue]"Flip 2 tile(s)!"[/blue]5player_name_92146574655fdfb958d7a10
Nekonyancer*Now click here to upgrade the den!*1wolves-hex-selector-11-8655fdfc6b672d10
Nekonyancer*Excellent!* Like all other player pieces, this lair came off our board, uncovering some [green]VP![/green] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed529eaeb5.06536708.jpg[/img] That slot also had a *token* tied to it, which was moved to our inventory.1wolves-piece-21655fdfc8236ce00
NekonyancerIt's a powerful [red]*Terrain token,*[/red] which can be spent as any terrain tile. We'll see this in action later. Scroll down for the next box.2wolves-status-icon-terrain-92146574655fdfc8236ce00wolves-status-icon-terrain-92146574 1
NekonyancerThe [red]*den*[/red] that we replaced was moved to the Moonlight board, bringing us one step closer to the first scoring phase!3wolves-piece-calendar-4655fdfc8236ce00wolves-piece-calendar-4 1
Nekonyancer[blue]A few more details about Lairs...[/blue] - You cannot build a Lair and a Den on the same space. - Each player can only build one lair in each Region. (Remember, regions are separated by rivers.) - Wolves (of any type) may NOT move onto enemy lairs. If a den is upgraded to a lair while an enemy wolf is sitting on it, it will *push* the enemy wolf away.4wolves-region-2655fdfc8236ce00
NekonyancerAlright, there's just one more action to show you: *domination.* Domination replaces any enemy *den* or *pack wolf* with one of our own. The new piece will come off our own board. The enemy piece will be moved to the [blue]Moonlight board.[/blue] We can only dominate something that is: - within *howl range* of one of our *Alpha* wolves. - the only piece owned by its player in that space.1maintitlebar_content655fe092c519f00
NekonyancerThere's a Tundra Wolf den nearby. It's the perfect target! *1.* Click on "Dominate." *2.* Flip the two Tundra tiles, starting with the right one. *3.* Click on [blue]"Flip 2 tile(s) and spend 1 terrain token(s)!"[/blue]2player_name_92146574655fe092c519f10
Nekonyancer*Click here!* Then select *Howl Range!*1wolves-piece-41655fe09f95a0810
Nekonyancer*Great!* Just like when we upgraded our den to a lair, the enemy den was moved to the Moonlight board. [blue]You've seen all the actions now![/blue]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment655fe0b01123e00
NekonyancerThe game will continue as you've seen. When enough pieces are moved to the Moonlight board, scoring phases will be triggered, and BGA will count each player's influence in scoring regions. [red]Each piece adds 1 influence, except Lairs, which add *3.*[/red]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment655fe0b01123e00
NekonyancerIn this region, the Tundra Wolves currently have *2 influence* (1 Alpha wolf + 1 pack wolf). We have *4 influence* (1 den + 1 lair).3wolves-region-2655fe0b01123e00
NekonyancerAfter the final scoring phase, the game ends. Each player's score is comprised of: - Points from scoring phases. - The highest VP numbers revealed in each track on their board. For example, hunting 5 different prey tokens would grant *25* points, not *25+16+9+4+1.* [green]Whoever has the most points wins![/green]4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment655fe0b01123e00
NekonyancerThe last thing I have to mention is the *2-Player Variant.* [blue]There are many small differences:[/blue] - Smaller board, with no central chasm. - Starting wolves can be placed in any region, but not on boards with crescent moon scoring phases. - Player boards are slightly different. Hunting prey does not grant action tokens. - Most significantly, an AI wolf pack is placed on the board, which may out-influence players during scoring phases.5maintitlebar_content655fe0b01123e00
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for The Wolves!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! A big thank you goes out to *xiongmao1298* and *Coolroo* for bringing this game to BGA! Have fun! :D6maintitlebar_content655fe0b01123e00
