Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edb5c4e487.48024005.jpg[/img] You and your opponent are locked into a contest of wits and strategy! You can call on some fairy tale characters to aid you, but don't get too greedy, or you'll fall like the villains of so many tales... [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerIn *Fox in the Forest,* players will take turns playing cards in a series of mini-rounds called *tricks,* making this a *trick-taking* game. [green]The more tricks you win in a round, the more points you earn.[/green] [red]But if you win too many, you won't earn anything![/red]2maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerThe first player to reach [blue]*21 points*[/blue] at the end of a round wins the game!3player_score_11941354000player_score_92143487 2 player_score_11941354 2
NekonyancerAt the beginning of each round, BGA deals [red]*13 cards*[/red] to each player. Cards come in three different suits - *bells, keys, and moons* - and are numbered from *1 to 11,* for a total of 33 cards. Of the remaining 7 cards, one is placed face up in the [blue]*Decree slot.*[/blue] (More on this soon!)4myhand_wrap000card_2 7 myhand_item_3 1 myhand_item_7 1 myhand_item_8 1 myhand_item_9 1 myhand_item_13 1 myhand_item_14 1 myhand_item_15 1 myhand_item_20 1 myhand_item_22 1 myhand_item_23 1 myhand_item_25 1 myhand_item_30 1 myhand_item_33 1
Nekonyancer[blue]*This token*[/blue] marks us as the first player, so let's get the game started! To take our turn, all we have to do is select a card in our hand and play it. *Play the 10 of Bells!*5first_player_token_p92143487010myhand_item_8 16 first_player_token_p92143487 2
Nekonyancer[blue]That wasn't so hard, was it?[/blue] Like many trick-taking games, Fox in the Forest uses *"Lead & Follow"* rules. The first card in each trick sets the *Lead Suit.* The other player must then *Follow Suit* by playing another card of the same suit, if they have one!1maintitlebar_content6674c3606672d00
NekonyancerIn this case, we set the Lead Suit as *Bells* by starting the trick with the [green]*10 of Bells.*[/green] [green]Our opponent must now follow suit with another Bell![/green]2card_86674c3606672d00card_8 8
NekonyancerThey played the [red]*2 of Bells.*[/red] Both players have played a card now, so the trick is over, and a winner must be determined!1card_216674c36990dc100card_21 1
NekonyancerThe winner of a trick is whoever played the highest card of the [blue]*Decreed Suit.*[/blue] If there are no cards of the Decreed Suit in play, the highest card of the *Lead Suit* wins.2card_26674c36990dc100card_2 7
NekonyancerIn this case, there are no cards of the Decreed Suit (Moons) in play, so the highest card of the Lead Suit (Bells) wins the trick. [green]Nice! We won the trick![/green]3card_86674c36990dc100
NekonyancerThis taken-trick [red]*tracker*[/red] will track your taken tricks. [green]Be sure to keep an eye on it![/green]4trick_counter_wrap_921434876674c369b607d00trick_counter_wrap_92143487 1
NekonyancerBGA randomly chose us as the first player for the first trick, but all other tricks are started by the winner of the previous trick. In this case, us! *Play the 10 of Keys!*5myhand_item_256674c369b607d10myhand_item_25 16
NekonyancerOkay, they played the [red]*1 of Keys.*[/red] Again, no cards of the Decreed Suit (Moons) have been played, but we played the highest card of the Lead Suit (Keys) so it looks like we win again!1card_66674c3a63f4e300card_6 6
Nekonyancer[blue]But take a closer look at their card.[/blue] All odd-numbered cards have fairy tale characters on them, and each one has a different *special ability.*2card_66674c3a63f4e300
NekonyancerThe *Swan's* special ability allows the player to start the next trick, even if they lose the current trick!3card_66674c3a63f4e300
NekonyancerThey led with the [red]*8 of Moons.*[/red] We now have to *Follow Suit* by playing another Moon. As you can see, all of the non-Moon cards in our hand have been temporarily disabled. *Play the 4 of Moons!*1card_186674c3dcc8fb810card_18 6 myhand_item_9 16
NekonyancerThey started with the [red]*7 of Moons.*[/red] In this case, the *Lead Suit* and the *Decreed suit* are one and the same, but the rules for winning the trick have not changed - highest Decreed card wins.1card_176674c404e7f2800card_17 6
NekonyancerNow we have to *Follow Suit* with a... oh. We don't have any *Moons,* so we can't! In this case, we can play [green]any card we want.[/green] Hmm. If we play any of our normal cards, we'll lose the trick, but maybe there's a character who can help us out.2myhand_wrap6674c404e7f2800
NekonyancerTake a moment and hover over our [red]*character cards.*[/red] [green]Do you see any cards that can win this trick for us?[/green]3myhand_wrap6674c404e7f2800myhand_item_3 6 myhand_item_14 6 myhand_item_15 6 myhand_item_22 6 myhand_item_30 6 myhand_item_33 6
Nekonyancer[green]There are two![/green] If we play the [blue]*9 of Keys (Witch),*[/blue] it will function as a Decreed card, and since its number is higher than our opponent's, we'll win the trick.4myhand_item_156674c404e7f2800myhand_item_15 7
NekonyancerBut since we have so many Key cards, let's go with the [red]*Fox*[/red] instead. It will allow us to swap a card in our hand with the [blue]*Decreed card,*[/blue] changing the Decreed Suit! *Play the Fox!*5myhand_item_146674c404e7f2810myhand_item_14 6
NekonyancerNow we have to select a card in our hand to swap for the decree card. If we want to win this trick, we'll have to use a key. It's probably best to use our lowest one! *Select the 2 of Keys!*1myhand_item_76674c40ebacfa10myhand_item_7 16
Nekonyancer*Great!* Now [blue]*Keys*[/blue] are the Decreed Suit, so our Fox wins the trick!1card_76674c413d181700card_7 7
Nekonyancer[green]And it gets even better.[/green] Take a look at our [red]*opponent's card.*[/red] It's a 7, and all 7s are *Treasure* cards. The winner of this trick will gain an extra point!2card_176674c413d181700card_17 6
NekonyancerNext, let's play the 11 of Moons (Monarch). It will force our opponent to play either a 1 or their highest card of the same suit. If we're lucky, they'll waste a high card! *Play the Monarch!*3myhand_item_26674c413d277a10myhand_item_2 16
Nekonyancer[red]Hmm. They had the 1 after all.[/red] In retrospect, playing the Monarch was a bad move. We didn't have the 1 of Moons. Our opponent started with 13 cards and 6 were leftover in the deck. That means there was a *68%* chance that our opponent had it. [green]Well, live and learn.[/green]1card_326674c437c2f3e00
NekonyancerAlright, I think you got the hang of it. The round will continue as you've seen until both players are out of cards. [blue]I'll skip to that point now.[/blue]2maintitlebar_content6674c437c3ec700
NekonyancerOkay, the round is about to end. When it does, each player will score points depending on the number of tricks they won. *Scroll down until you can see the [blue]Round Score chart.*[/blue]1player_name_921434876674c4b26efeb00trick_score_table 7
NekonyancerAs you can see, we can earn 6 points by winning almost no tricks and 0 points if we win 10 or more, but other than those exceptions, [green]the more tricks we win, the more points we earn.[/green]2trick_score_table6674c4b26efeb00trick_score_table 7
NekonyancerIt's good to keep in mind that there are exactly *13 tricks per round.* Therefore, if we win 10 tricks (0 points), our opponent will win 3 tricks (6 points)!3trick_score_table6674c4b26efeb00
NekonyancerWhile we're down here, note that you can check all the special card abilities in [red]*this chart.*[/red]4odd_card_list6674c4b26efeb00odd_card_list 6
NekonyancerOkay, you should be able to see the *Round Summary* now. Nice, we scored 6 points for winning 8 tricks, plus 3 for winning three Treasure cards. We're off to a great start! *Close the summary when you're ready. Then continue.*1player_name_921434876674c4bf32b6100
NekonyancerAs you can see, BGA redealt all the cards for Round 2, which will play out the same way the first one did. Since we started the first trick in the first round, our opponent will start the first trick in the second round. [green]We will continue playing rounds until one player scores a total of at least 21 points, winning the game![/green]2myhand_wrap6674c4bf32b6100
NekonyancerOne last thing! If you want a longer or shorter game, you can change the winning score to *16* or *35* in the *lobby options.*3maintitlebar_content6674c4bf32b6100
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Fox in the Forest!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! Big thank yous go out to *Joshua Buergel* for designing the game, *Renegade Game Studios* and *Foxtrot Games* for publishing, and *ufm* for bringing it to BGA! Have fun! :D4maintitlebar_content6674c4bf32b6100
