Nekonyancer*Welcome to Texas Hold 'em!* This variant of Poker gained worldwide popularity in the early 2000s due to the advent of online poker and exposure in popular media, including the 2006 film, Casino Royale. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed7aa9f4b8.35218987.jpg[/img] [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerEach player is dealt 2 cards at the beginning of each round. These cards are called your *Hole.* Your goal is to combine your Hole cards with 5 Community cards on the table to create a final hand of 5 with the greatest possible value.2playertablename_92147957000
Nekonyancer*Bets* will be placed at several points throughout the round. At the end of the round, the player with the best hand OR the only player who didn't *give up* (fold) wins the *pot* (all the points bet that round)! [green]To win the game, you must knockout all other players by winning all of their points![/green]3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
Nekonyancer[blue]Each round consists of 4 bidding phases:[/blue] • *Preflop* • *Flop* (3 community cards revealed) • *Turn* (4th card revealed) • *River* (last card revealed) It's time to start the *Preflop* phase, but first I need to explain the *Blinds.*4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
NekonyancerThe *blinds* are players who are forced to bet a little bit at the beginning of each round. The [red]*numbers*[/red] on the table show how much each player has bet so far.5playerbettotal_92147957000playerbettotal_11941354 1 playerbettotal_92146574 1 playerbettotal_92147957 1 playerbettotal_92143487 1
NekonyancerThe player to the left of the dealer is the [blue]*Small Blind,*[/blue] who starts with a *1-point bet.* The player after that is the [red]*Big Blind,*[/red] who starts with a *2-point bet.* !!! Amounts bet by the blinds will *double* every 5 rounds!6playerbettotal_92146574000playerbettotal_11941354 2 playerbettotal_92146574 1
NekonyancerWe are neither the big nor small blind, so our bet is currently at [green]*0 points,*[/green] but as the player after the Big Blind, we must start the *Preflop bidding!*7playerbettotal_92147957000playerbettotal_92147957 3
Nekonyancer[blue]On our turn, we have three choices:[/blue] • [blue]*Call:*[/blue] increase your bet to match the highest bet made so far. If your bet is already the highest, this is called *Check* instead. • [red]*Raise:*[/red] make a higher bet. As you can see, there are several different buttons for this option. • [green]*Fold:*[/green] give up for the rest of the round.8call000call 2 raiseByFirst 1 raiseBySecond 1 raiseByThird 1 raise 1 fold 3 all_in 1
NekonyancerAgain, [blue]*Calling*[/blue] means increasing your bet to match the highest bid. Right now, the biggest bet at the table is [red]*2,*[/red] and our current bet is [green]*0,*[/green] so if we call, it will increase our current bet by 2. *Click on [blue]Call(+2)[/blue] at the top!*9playerbettotal_92147957010call 2 playerbettotal_92146574 1 playerbettotal_92147957 3
Nekonyancer*Great!* Our bet was increased to [green]*2.*[/green] [green]Now it's nekonekoneko3's turn to call, raise, or fold.[/green]1playerbettotal_9214795765c71098b0c8500playerbettotal_92147957 3
Nekonyancer[green]*nekonekoneko3*[/green] and [blue]*Nekonyancer*[/blue] both called, increasing their bets to 2 as well. Now it's [red]*nekonekoneko4's*[/red] turn. He was the Big Blind this round, and since everyone else called, his bet is *still* the highest. They can still *Call,* but in this case, it would not cause them to increase their bet, so this action has a different name: *Check.*1playertablename_9214657465c710ac3ef4800playerbettotal_11941354 2 playertablename_11941354 2 playerbettotal_92146574 1 playertablename_92146574 1 playerbettotal_92143487 3 playertablename_92143487 3
Nekonyancer*Okay, they checked!* At this point, all players have had at least one chance to bet, and all players who have not folded have the same bet on the table. Whenever these conditions are met, the current phase ends.1playertablename_9214657465c710ca9135900
NekonyancerAt the end of each phase, all players' bets are collected and added to the [red]*pot.*[/red] The next phase is the *Flop,* which will start by revealing 3 of the 5 community cards.2pottotal65c710ca9135900pottotal 1
NekonyancerNow that the *Flop* has been revealed, let's take a moment to talk about [blue]possible card combinations.[/blue] Remember, at the end of the round, the two cards in our hole will be combined with the 5 community cards. BGA will automatically choose the strongest 5-card combination from those 7 cards for us.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment65c710ca9528e00
Nekonyancer[blue]In order from strongest to weakest, the possible hand combinations are:[/blue] • Royal Flush • Straight Flush • 4 of a Kind • Full House • Flush • Straight • 3 of a Kind • 2 Pair • Pair • High Card [green][tip] If you need details about these combinations, google a list of poker hand rankings. Almost any result in the list will tell you what you need to know![/green] :)4maintitlebar_content65c710ca9528e00
NekonyancerSadly, the cards in our Hole don't match up well with the cards in the Flop. The best we can do is use the 2 kings on the table to make a Pair, but everyone can do that. [red]Don't give up! There are two cards yet to be revealed![/red]5flop265c710ca9528e00
Nekonyancer[green]Let's get back to the game.[/green] We started the Preflop phase because we were the player to the left of the Big Blind. However, all other phases are started by the player to the *left of the Dealer,* who is also the Small Blind. In this case, it's [blue]*Nekonyancer.*[/blue]6playertablecards_1194135465c710ca9528e00
NekonyancerNekonyancer and nekonekoneko4 both *checked,* so now it's our turn. [green][tip] Reminder: "Call" means matching the highest bet at the table. If you call when your bet already matches the highest bid, it's called a "check."[/green] Jeez, what cowards. There's only 8 points in the [red]*pot*[/red] so far. Let's spice up the game by *raising.* *Click on Bet 10 at the top!*1playertablename_9214795765c710f680d4d10betThird 16 pottotal 1
NekonyancerOkay, we increased our current bet to [red]*10!*[/red] Now [green]*nekonekoneko3*[/green] will go...1playerbettotal_9214795765c711089e49300playerbettotal_92147957 1 playertablename_92143487 3
Nekonyancernekonekoneko3 called, matching our bet of 10. Now it's [blue]*Nekonyancer's*[/blue] turn. He already had a turn in this phase, but since we *raised,* BGA has to give each player at the table a turn afterward.1playertablename_1194135465c71116900c100playertablename_11941354 2
Nekonyancer*Wow, what a coward!* Nekonyancer didn't want to bet more points than he already had, so he *folded!* [red]That means he's out of the round![/red]1playertablecards_1194135465c71120296e700
Nekonyancer*Wow, nekonekoneko4 folded too!* That brings the Flop to a close. Just like before, all the [blue]*points*[/blue] that each player bet will be added to the [red]*pot.*[/red] The next phase is the *Turn,* which starts by revealing the 4th card on the table.1playertablename_9214657465c7112c9c79e00playerbettotal_92147957 2 playerbettotal_92143487 2 pottotal 1
Nekonyancer2 of Hearts. Oof. We still have nothing but a pair of Kings. Let's just *check* for now and see what our remaining opponent - nekonekoneko3 - does. *Click on "Check" at the top!*2turn65c7112ca065710check 16
Nekonyancernekonekoneko3 checked too, so that's it for the *Turn!* The final phase is the *River,* which will start by revealing the final card.1playerbettotal_9214348765c71154dc43c00
Nekonyancer[red]Wow, this is not our day. We still have nothing.[/red] If both of the cards in our hole were spades, we could combine them with the K♠️, 6♠️, and 7♠️ on the table, making a Flush... but they're not.2river65c71154e089800
Nekonyancer[blue]You know what? Let's go nuts.[/blue] Let's *bluff* and show our opponent how confident we are in the strength of our hand. Maybe they'll fold! Let's bet everything we have. This is called going *All in.* *Click on All in at the top! Then confirm your action!*3maintitlebar_content65c71154e089810all_in 16
Nekonyancer*Hah! Our opponent folded!* Since all our opponents folded, we win by default! All the points in the [red]*pot*[/red] are ours! We don't even have to show our hand, so our opponent will never know that we were bluffing. :) If they had called by also going all in, we would have both revealed our hands, and the strongest hand would have won.1pottotal65c7117a6567900pottotal 1
Nekonyancer[green]Just a couple final details to go through.[/green] First of all, there's more to explain about going *all in.* If a player does not have enough points to match a bid, they can still stay in the round by going All In. However, they can only get back as many points as they bid from each opponent.3maintitlebar_content65c7117a6d7c300
NekonyancerFor example, let's say our opponent bets *250* points. We only have *50,* but we have a strong hand. We go All In, staying in the round. If we win, we will gain *50* of our opponent's points, the original *50* from our All in bid, and the contents of the pot. Our opponent will keep the remaining *200.* [green][tip] In real games, this math is simplified by making "side pots." You can google them if you want more information.[/green]4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment65c7117a6d7c300
NekonyancerFinally, there are several *lobby options* you can tweak to your liking, including when the game ends, how many points each player starts with, and more! [green]Be sure to check them each time you play![/green]5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment65c7117a6d7c300
Nekonyancer[blue]Alright, that was one full round![/blue] For the next round, the dealer chip was passed to the next player at the table, making nekonekoneko4 the *Small Blind* and us the *Big Blind.* [green]The game will continue as you've seen until one player collects every single point from their opponents, winning the game![/green]6playerstocktotal_9214795765c7117a6d7c300dealer_button_11941354 1
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Texas Hold 'Em!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! A big thank you goes out to *Crazyboog* for bringing this game to BGA! Have fun! :D7maintitlebar_content65c7117a6d7c300
