3p1cFr3nzy[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67f7c84ddc5641.50262110.jpg[/img] With humanity facing an overpopulation crisis on Earth, the need for terraforming Mars is greater than ever! *[green]As the head of one of the terraforming corporations, can you play the right projects to emerge as the most influential force behind the terraforming?[/green]* (This tutorial will take about 20-30 minutes) 1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
3p1cFr3nzy[blue] [tip] This tutorial is best played on a PC. [/blue] This tableau building, resource management game involves playing cards and standard projects, playing tiles on Mars, using ongoing card actions effectively and claiming milestones and awards to obtain victory points. *Whoever has the most victory points wins the game.* 2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
3p1cFr3nzyBefore we begin, let's get familiar with the interface. [green] [tip] There will be some scrolling between some steps - just so you know beforehand.[/green]3gameaction_status_wrap000
3p1cFr3nzyAt the top, we have our *hand of cards*, in which we can play or sell cards (discard) depending on if they are worth it to play or not. [tip] In this game, each card represents a project.4hand_ffa500000
3p1cFr3nzyNext we have our play area, which includes our [red]*corporation (headquarters)*[/red], [blue]*any cards we have played previously*[/blue] and [green]*our current terraforming rank (TR) [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67f7c84f266a58.85844510.jpg[/img], together with our resources*[/green]. [tip] If possible, please change all the card layouts to *'Stack'* by pressing *this* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67f7c8502d83c0.69966737.jpg[/img] *icon* as well. 5player_area_ffa500000player_board_header_ffa500 3 stack_ffa500_cards_4 1 stack_ffa500_cards_2a 2 stack_ffa500_cards_2 2 tableau_ffa500_cards_3 2 stack_ffa500_cards_1 2
3p1cFr3nzyFinally, we have the *Game Board*, which contains the *map of Mars*, [blue]*standard projects*[/blue], *global parameters*, [green]*milestones and awards*[/green], as well as any other information about the game state.6map_middle000display_main 2 map_bottom 3
3p1cFr3nzy!!! *Please do not scroll above the game board until it is okay to do so.* As of now, Mars is still cold, dry and deprived of oxygen, so we need to increase the temperature, water content and oxygen on Mars to successfully Terraform it.7map_middle001
3p1cFr3nzyYou can track the *oxygen percentage* on the bar above the map of Mars, the *temperature* on the thermometer to the right and the *water content on Mars* at the [red]*top left corner (shows # of ocean tiles remaining)*[/red]. For oxygen and temperature, the current value will be circled. *Increasing these 3 parameters increases your Terraform Rating, which in turn gives you victory points at the end of the game.*8gameaction_status_wrap000decks_area 1
3p1cFr3nzy*You can now move the interface to other parts now* :) Enough initial explaining, let's start the game. [green][tip] Is the interface too small for you to read? You can use the zoom functions above your name and profile picture to zoom in/out, or use the gear icon to adjust different interface parts separately. [/green]9map_middle001
3p1cFr3nzyAt the start of the game, each player is dealt *10 cards* and chooses their [red]*corporation*[/red], which tells them their starting money ([blue]*Megacredits or M€*[/blue]) and whatever effect it has during the game. For all corporations *except* beginner corp, you must spend 3 M€ for each card you keep from the initial 10 cards drawn.11card_corp_1_10000alt_tracker_m_ffa500 2 tableau_ffa500_cards_4 1 tracker_m_ffa500 2
3p1cFr3nzyThen, until the game ends, each round follows these four phases in order (first two phases do not occur in generation (round) one): [red]*Phase 1: Player order*[/red] [blue]*Phase 2: Research*[/blue] [green]*Phase 3: Action*[/green] *Phase 4: Production* 12archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
3p1cFr3nzy*Phase 3: Action* --- This is the main phase of the game. Here, players take turns taking *either* 1 or 2 actions until they decide to pass, whether or not they are forced to. [red] [tip] For this game, LogicMeister3299 will not take actions to speed up the tutorial.[/red]13gameaction_status_wrap000
3p1cFr3nzyFor the first action, let's keep it simple and play a *Standard Project*! You can perform these without using cards. Let's try the standard project called 'Asteroid'. To do this, please click on *'Standard Project'* at the top and then *'Asteroid'*. [red](If you press the wrong project by accident at the top, you can correct it by clicking on 'Asteroid' on the left side of the game board.)[/red]1gameaction_status_wrap673653ddcb58410
3p1cFr3nzyFor that project, we paid 14 M€ to increase the temperature one step to -28 C, and thus [red]*gained one TR*[/red]! Still a long way to go until the people on Mars don't feel like they are on Antarctica :) Let's contribute to Terraforming more by playing a project from our hand.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment67365406f09b700alt_tracker_tr_ffa500 1 tracker_tr_ffa500 1
3p1cFr3nzyAs you can see from the cards, there is a lot of stuff on them - *don't worry*, let's break it down into manageable pieces. Let's use *Ore Processor* and *Eos Chasma National Park* in our hand as examples. 3card_main_10467365406f09b700
3p1cFr3nzy[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67f7c85129f101.31201180.jpg[/img] (See above for reference) *Ore Processor:* --- For every card, there will be a [red]*cost (top left)*[/red] and [green]*tags*[/green] associated with the card. For this card, it also has an [blue]*ongoing action*[/blue] (*above* the project picture), which is to spend 4 power to gain one titanium and increase the oxygen level one step.4gameaction_status_wrap67365406f09b700
3p1cFr3nzy[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67f7c8529b3d61.70862971.jpg[/img] (See above for reference) *Eos Chasma National Park:* --- As well as tags and a cost, this card has a [red]*requirement to play it*[/red] (based on the tags on cards you have played or the board state), [blue]*an instant effect*[/blue] (*below* the project picture) and gives a [green]*victory point*[/green] for playing it (bottom right).5gameaction_status_wrap67365406f09b700
3p1cFr3nzy[tip] If you still need assistance understanding the cards or anything on the interface, feel free to *hover* (*tap and hold* for phone/tablet users) over different things for more information on that thing specifically.6gameaction_status_wrap67365406f09b700
3p1cFr3nzyNow that we understand the cards, let's play *Aquifer Pumping*, which allows use to play *ocean (water) tiles* for cheaper. Click this card to play it. [tip] Only [blue]*blue*[/blue] cards have an ongoing effect or action after the card is resolved.7card_main_18767365406f09b710
3p1cFr3nzyThat was our second action, so in an actual game, it would now be someone else's turn.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment67365415992f000
3p1cFr3nzyLet's use *Aquifer Pumping* to get an ocean tile! This card allows us to spend 8 M€ to place one. Click on the [blue]*Aquifer Pumping card*[/blue] or click [red]*'Activate Card -> Aquifer Pumping'*[/red] at the top to do the action. [tip] Actions on blue cards can only be used *once per generation*.2tableau_ffa500_cards_2a67365418b4eb510button_46 1 tableau_ffa500_cards_2a 2
3p1cFr3nzyGood job! Let's place this tile on the board. As you might notice, Mars is split into hexagons, with some currently highlighted in *green*. This shows where you can place the ocean tile. (Ocean tiles and other 'land-based' tiles usually have different allowed spaces) Please click on the tile (4,5) next to *Noctis City* (4,4), so the end state looks like this: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67f7c84b4adf90.62045747.jpg[/img]1gameaction_status_wrap6736541b403fe10
3p1cFr3nzyGreat job! Now we have water on Mars :D Placing this tile increases a global parameter by *one* step, so our [blue]*TR*[/blue] went up by one. Also, we placed it on a tile which had two [green]*plant*[/green] icons below it, meaning we gain 2 plants for placing the tile.1gameaction_status_wrap673654275631b00alt_tracker_tr_ffa500 2 alt_tracker_p_ffa500 3 tracker_tr_ffa500 2 tracker_p_ffa500 3
3p1cFr3nzyThat was a good round if you ask me :) We can't do much else, so let's skip our second action and then [red]*Pass*[/red].2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment673654275631b00
3p1cFr3nzy*Phase 4: Production* (please look underneath your player icon and name for this part) --- After *everyone* has passed, this phase begins. To begin with, everyone gains money based on their own [red]*M€ production (brown border number)*[/red] *and* [blue]*Terraform Rating*[/blue]. These two values add to give the total money gained for each player.1player_counters_ffa500673654377514800alt_tracker_tr_ffa500 2 alt_tracker_pm_ffa500 1 tracker_tr_ffa500 2 tracker_pm_ffa500 1
3p1cFr3nzyFor steel, titanium, plants, power and heat, we just gain how much is indicated by the [green]*production number in the brown border/box underneath its corresponding resource.*[/green] [red]*!!! You cannot go below 0 for all production types apart from M€, which can go to -5.*[/red]2player_counters_ffa50067365437770e300alt_tracker_ps_ffa500 3 alt_tracker_pu_ffa500 3 alt_tracker_pp_ffa500 3 alt_tracker_pe_ffa500 3 alt_tracker_ph_ffa500 3 tracker_ps_ffa500 3 tracker_pu_ffa500 3 tracker_pp_ffa500 3 tracker_pe_ffa500 3 tracker_ph_ffa500 3
3p1cFr3nzy*Phase 1: Player Order* --- Finally, the [red]*first player marker*[/red] is given to the next player in turn order. (For this adaptation, phase 1 is done before the end of the generation)3player_counters_ffa500673654377762401starting_player 1
3p1cFr3nzy*Phase 2: Research* --- It's time for a new generation (round)! As well as rotating first player order, each player is drawn 4 cards from the deck and can buy as many of these cards as they wish, paying 3 M€ for each.4draw_ffa500673654377a8c400
3p1cFr3nzyHere we will buy *Solar Wind Power*, *Strip Mine* and *Phobos Space Haven*. Unfortunately, the tutorial does not allow you to buy the cards, so the tutorial will do it for you.5draw_ffa500673654377a8c400
3p1cFr3nzyIt's our turn to go first! This time, let's play a [green]*green (automated) card*[/green]. To continue, please play *Artificial Photosynthesis*.1card_main_115673654a5d8b3f10
3p1cFr3nzyFor this card, the effect has icons inside a brown box/border - this means it gives *production*, instead of getting the resources *immediately*. It also gives us a choice of production type - at the top, select *'Increase Energy Production x 2'*.1gameaction_status_wrap673654b15167310button_102 16
3p1cFr3nzyThat card was powerful. 8) (*sigh...) Unlike blue cards, only the *tags* and *victory points* (if any) for [green]*green*[/green] cards are of use to us in later stages of the game.1card_main_115673654b4cb98100tableau_ffa500_cards_1 3
3p1cFr3nzyOn another note, we now do not have enough M€ to use aquifer pumping this generation, but we could sell cards to afford it :) This can be done by using the *Sell patents* action. Let's do exactly that. Press the [red]*button highlighted*[/red] at the top to sell some cards.2maintitlebar_content673654b4cb98110button_106 1
3p1cFr3nzyGood job! We will discard *Soil Factory*, *Eos Chasma National Park*, *Heat Trappers* and *Asteroid Mining* for 1 M€ each. (Selling cards is buggy so just press Continue)1card_main_104673654b8dc79300
3p1cFr3nzyLet's get our TR up another step by [blue]activating *Aquifer Pumping*[/blue].1gameaction_status_wrap673654ce8ebb210button_124 2 tableau_ffa500_cards_2a 2
3p1cFr3nzyWait - why do we have an option here? This is because we now have [red]*Steel*[/red]! For this action and any cards that have a *Building* tag (e.g. *Protected Valley* or *Strip Mine*), we can exchange Steel for M€ (every 1 Steel = 2 M€) to cover the cost of it. Therefore, we can use 1 Steel and 6 M€ to perform this action. *Click that option above to continue.* 1maintitlebar_content673654d21d50f10button_1 16 tracker_s_ffa500 1
3p1cFr3nzyGood job! I will place the tile next to the ocean tile we placed last generation to trigger something cool.1gameaction_status_wrap673654df892a200
3p1cFr3nzyAs well as increasing our TR and the ocean parameter, together with a placement bonus (2 plants), we also gained 2 M€ for placing the tile next to another ocean tile! Nice bonus :P [tip] Placing next to more than one ocean tile will give more M€ - 2 M€ per ocean tile adjacent to it.1gameaction_status_wrap673654e2ba51d00
3p1cFr3nzyAnyways, we are out of things to do again so let's end this generation.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment673654e2ba51d00
3p1cFr3nzyBefore we continue, one thing that did not happen during the first *Production phase* was *heat transfer*. Here, any [red]*leftover power*[/red] at the end of the generation is directly converted into [green]*heat*[/green].1player_counters_ffa500673654efd564b00alt_tracker_e_ffa500 1 alt_tracker_h_ffa500 3 tracker_e_ffa500 1 tracker_h_ffa500 3
3p1cFr3nzyThe start of this round will be playing cards and activating [blue]*Aquifer Pumping*[/blue] (which has been seen before), so let's fast-forward a little bit.2gameaction_status_wrap673654eff3dac00tableau_ffa500_cards_2a 2
3p1cFr3nzyOne thing you might notice is that we now have [green]*8 plants*[/green] and a hovering *greenery icon* above the plant icon - this means we can *convert plants into greenery*! Let's try this conversion. Select this action *at the top of the screen*, or press on *the number 8 on the plant value* to take the action.1gameaction_status_wrap673655dccab0b10button_198 16 alt_tracker_p_ffa500 3 tracker_p_ffa500 3
3p1cFr3nzyGood job! This conversion action allows us to place a [green]*Greenery tile*[/green], which also increases the oxygen by one! Can you place the tile on the game board so it is *adjacent to* [blue]*2 ocean tiles*[/blue] on the map, and *also gives us 2 plants* as a placement bonus? (Hint: above the water tiles)1gameaction_status_wrap67365603d223710
3p1cFr3nzyWell done for figuring it out :D That allowed us to increase the oxygen level (hence our TR went up), gain 4 M€ for placing the tile next to 2 ocean tiles, and also gain 2 plants as a bonus.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6736560f4677800
3p1cFr3nzyDo you remember how steel could be used for *building* tag cards? This time, let's use [blue]*Titanium*[/blue] to play a card! These cards need to have a *space* tag (e.g. *Phobos Space Haven*, *Solar Wind Power*) in order to use titanium to cover part (or all) of the cost.3gameaction_status_wrap6736560f4677800alt_tracker_u_ffa500 2 tracker_u_ffa500 2
3p1cFr3nzyWhen using *Titanium*, each titanium is worth 3 M€ (compared to 2 M€ for Steel), meaning we can just barely afford *Deimos Down* this turn! Let's play that card using our 25 M€ and 2 titanium.4card_main_396736560f4677810
3p1cFr3nzyThis card is very good - it has 3 different effects! When you play a card like this, you can choose what order to perform them (if it matters). In this case, it doesn't matter too much.1generalactions67365662a661500
3p1cFr3nzyThe first effect allows the player to *remove* plants from a player. You can tell if it can be applied to others by a [red]*red box*[/red] around the resource icon. [blue] [tip] Some cards may allow you to remove production of a resource instead. In this case, if a player's production of this resource cannot go lower, they cannot be selected to lose production.[/blue]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment67365681cabff00tracker_p_ff0000 4
3p1cFr3nzy*Please refer to the thermometer on the game board for this step*. --- In addition to gaining *4 steel*, we also increased the temperature by *three* steps, resulting in our TR increasing by *three*! Another good bonus is that if someone raises the temperature to *-24 C* or *-20 C*, they obtain a free heat production as a bonus! 2gameaction_status_wrap673656896395500
3p1cFr3nzyUnlike [green]*Automated (green)*[/green] cards, once an [red]*Event (red)*[/red] card is resolved, it is usually placed face down so the tags can no longer be used. You can also tell if it is an [red]*Event card*[/red] if it has a tag with a 'down arrow' (*Event* tag). 3card_main_39673656896395500tableau_ffa500_cards_3 1 tableau_ffa500_cards_1 3
3p1cFr3nzyIt's time for the action phase for the 4th generation, and this time, we have [red]*8 Heat*[/red], meaning we can *raise the temperature one step* by spending 8 Heat! Let's do that. (This action is a bit bugged, so press *Continue* to see it in action.)1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment673656fc99b3f00alt_tracker_h_ffa500 1 tracker_h_ffa500 1
3p1cFr3nzyOne important action we have not taken is placing a *City tile* on the game board. These tiles score points based on how many [green]*Greenery tiles*[/green] are adjacent to the city. For this time, let's use its *'Standard project'* to place it. Either select *'Standard project'* and then *'City'* at the top to select the action, or click on the *City* standard project on the *game board*. 1gameaction_status_wrap6736570e0994010button_272 16
3p1cFr3nzyGood stuff :) Let's place the city tile next to the [green]*greenery tile*[/green] on the board. To continue, please place the city tile next to ocean and greenery tiles so the board ends up looking like this: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img67f7c84cc12b69.86507235.jpg[/img] 1gameaction_status_wrap6736571fcbf2210
3p1cFr3nzyAs well as placing the city, we also got [blue]*1 M€ production!*[/blue] !!! You cannot place a city tile adjacent to a city tile already on the board, unless it is stated.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment67365731d9ee700tracker_pm_ffa500 2
3p1cFr3nzyWe are coming to the end of the tutorial (I hope it was fairly easy to follow :) ), so let's just go over some things that I could not show you as they usually happen later in the game.2gameaction_status_wrap67365731d9ee700
3p1cFr3nzy*For the next couple of steps, please scroll down so that you can see the bottom of the game board.* --- [red]*Milestones*[/red] and [green]*Awards*[/green] (bottom of game board): During the game, you may spend money to claim a milestone, or fund an award. [red]To claim a milestone and *instantly gain 5 victory points*, you must meet that milestone *before* anyone else. [/red] 3gameaction_status_wrap67365731d9ee700display_milestones 1 display_awards 3
3p1cFr3nzy[green]In contrast, you may fund an award *anytime*, but the points are awarded at *the end of the game*. For 3 or more players, there is also victory points for *2nd place* (ties are friendly). Watch out - the 2nd award is more expensive to fund, and the 3rd even more expensive![/green] [tip] Only 3 awards and 3 milestones can be funded/claimed during the game so watch out!4gameaction_status_wrap67365731d9ee700display_milestones 1 display_awards 3
3p1cFr3nzy*End of game* --- When *all three* global parameters are at max (temperature at +8 C, oxygen at 14 % and 9 ocean tiles placed), the game ends at the end of the generation. After production phase, players may convert plants into Greenery if they can, and afterwards the points are scored. 5gameaction_status_wrap67365731d9ee700
3p1cFr3nzy*Anything else* --- - If you caused the oxygen level to reach *8%*, you also raise the temperature *one* step (if you can). - In addition, if you caused the temperature to reach 0 C, you may place an ocean tile for free (if there are still ocean tiles remaining). - The *Power plant* standard project allows you to raise power production *by one*. - Greenery tiles must be placed next to tiles that you own on the board. For special tiles, please read it's description for any specific placement rules corresponding to that particular tile. 6gameaction_status_wrap67365731d9ee700
3p1cFr3nzy*Scoring* --- At the end of the game, you score victory points for: - [blue]*Your Terraform Rating (TR)*[/blue] - *City tiles* (1 point per greenery tile around a city; count each city separately) - [green]*Greenery tiles*[/green] (1 point each) - [red]*Points from Awards and Milestones*[/red] - Points on cards played (including events) *Whoever has the most victory points wins the game!* :D (Tiebreaker is whoever has the most leftover M€)7gameaction_status_wrap67365731d9ee700marker_ffa500_0 3 tile_1_1 3 display_milestones 1 display_awards 1 alt_tracker_tr_ffa500 2 tracker_tr_ffa500 2 tracker_tr_ff0000 2
3p1cFr3nzy*Variants* --- Want to make the game more interesting? You can use these options (in table creation): - *Corporate Era* - Adds more variety of cards in-game. (They are less focused on terraforming) - *Draft mode* - Draft cards in the research phase instead of buying only from the 4 cards you are dealt. - *Prelude and Colonies (expansions)* - I'll leave it for you to discover ;)8gameaction_status_wrap67365731d9ee700
