Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img691d4b923e37e1.52699746.jpg[/img] You and your rival are master jewelers, creating majestic adornments for monarchs and other powerful leaders to increase your prestige and fortune. It's time to show your worth! [green][tip] This 51-step tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green] 1maintitlebar_content65befbde99b4f00
NekonyancerIn *Splendor Duel,* players take tokens from the board and use them to buy *Jewel cards,* which grant the prestige points and crowns you need to win. Jewel cards also offer bonuses and reduce the costs of other Jewel cards. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed7d33ad47.25197068.jpg[/img]2maintitlebar_content65befbde99b4f00
NekonyancerTo win, you must achieve one of the three victory conditions shown on [red]*this tile:*[/red] [green]- 20 total Prestige Points. - 10 Crowns. - 10 Prestige points in a single color.[/green]3score-tile65befbde99b4f00score-tile 8
NekonyancerEach turn consists of a sequence of 2 optional actions and 1 mandatory action. *Optional Action 1:* Use a [green]*privilege scroll*[/green] to claim a token from the board. Since we're going second, we started the game with one privilege. 4privilege-counter-wrapper-9214348765befbde99b4f00privilege-counter-wrapper-92143487 8
NekonyancerLet's use it! [blue]*Click here!*[/blue]5usePrivilege_button65befbde99b4f10usePrivilege_button 2
Nekonyancer[blue]Now we can take a token from the board. There are several different colors.[/blue] *Blue, Red, Green, White,* and *Black* are all common gems. *Pearls* (pink) are rarer and more important. *Gold* (yellow) is the most important of all. It can be used as a pearl or any type of common gem, but we can't pick it up with a Privilege!1maintitlebar_content65befbee77f1a00
Nekonyancer*Select the black gem in the top row! Then click on [blue]Take selected token(s)[/blue] at the top!*2token-12-front65befbee77f1a10
Nekonyancer*Great!* If you scroll down, you'll find the gem in our [red]*inventory,*[/red] but it's easier to simply check the [blue]*Player Info Panels.*[/blue] You can also see what tokens our opponent currently has!1maintitlebar_content65befbf5c150d00player-table-92143487 6 player_board_92143487 7 player_board_11941354 7
NekonyancerThe privilege we used was returned to the [red]*supply.*[/red] As you can see, there are only *3 privileges* in the game. If a player gains a privilege when the supply is *empty,* they'll take it from their opponent's inventory instead, so think twice before you hoard them all!2maintitlebar_content65befbf5c150d00table-privileges 6
Nekonyancer*Optional Action 2:* Replenish the game board. This action can only be taken if there are tokens in [red]*this bag*[/red] to replenish the board with. Right now, all 25 gems are either on the board or in player inventories, so this action was automatically skipped. [green]I'll explain more about replenishing the board later.[/green] [green](Step 10/51)[/green]3bag65befbf5c150d00bag 6
NekonyancerTime for our *Mandatory Action.* [blue]This action can be used in 3 ways:[/blue] - Take up to 3 tokens from the board. - Take 1 gold token and reserve 1 Jewel card. - Purchase a Jewel card. [blue]We'll start with taking tokens![/blue]4maintitlebar_content65befbf5c150d00
Nekonyancer[blue]There are several rules to follow when taking tokens.[/blue] *1. The tokens must be in an uninterrupted horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line.* As you can see, our opponent took three tokens in a vertical line on their turn.5token-7-front65befbf5c150d00
NekonyancerFor our action, we would not be able to take [red]*these three gems...*[/red] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed7caba671.92869640.jpg[/img] ... because they are interrupted by an *empty space.* 6token-23-front65befbf5c150d00
Nekonyancer*2. You cannot take gold tokens.* Simple enough, right?7token-11-front65befbf5c150d00
Nekonyancer*3. If you take 2 pearls or 3 tokens of the same color, our opponent will gain a privilege.* [red]*These icons*[/red] at the top remind us of this.8board-tooltip-zone-265befbf5c150d00board-tooltip-zone-0 6 board-tooltip-zone-2 6
Nekonyancer[blue]Now then, which tokens should we take?[/blue] Well, it's probably good to have a Jewel card or two in mind when you do this. You'll see them all if you *scroll down.*9maintitlebar_content65befbf5c150d00
NekonyancerEach card has a cost in the bottom-left corner. It looks like this card is particularly cheap, requiring just 3 black tokens. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed7ccfd6b9.41679683.jpg[/img] Let's go for it!10card-28-front65befbf5c150d00
NekonyancerPearls are pretty important too, so we should pick one up while we can. *Select the pearl and the 2 black tokens under it.* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed7ceab009.38134899.jpg[/img] This can be done by clicking on them individually or clicking on one and then *dragging* the mouse to make a line. *When they're selected, click on [blue]"Take selected token(s)" at the top!*[/blue]11player_name_9214348765befbf5c150d10
Nekonyancer[blue]Okay, that's it for our turn![/blue] Now our opponent will go.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment65befbfc1326100
NekonyancerNext turn! Let's take more tokens. Remember, you can take tokens in *diagonal* lines too, not just horizontal or vertical. *Take [green]green[/green] - [red]red[/red] - [green]green[/green] from the board!* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img691d4b92592127.74994894.jpg[/img] [green](Step 20/51)[/green]1player_name_9214348765befc075af4910
NekonyancerWe have [green]*7 tokens*[/green] now (10 is the maximum). That's more than enough to buy a card. *Scroll down to see the Jewel cards!* As you can see, that red card I pointed out earlier has been automatically highlighted because we can now afford it.2token-counter-wrapper-9214348765befc4dc94df00token-counter-wrapper-92143487 3
Nekonyancer*Select this card.* (The red one.) *Then click on [blue]"Pay •••"[/blue] at the top!*3card-28-front65befc4dc94df10
Nekonyancer*Perfect!* If you scroll down, you'll see the card in our inventory. But again, it's easiest to simply look at [green]*this panel.*[/green] We have 2 green tokens, 1 red token, 1 pearl, and now, 1 red Jewel card!1player_board_9214348765befc595772c00player_board_92143487 8
NekonyancerThe tokens that we spent on the card went into [red]*this bag.*[/red] They'll wait in here until someone uses that optional action I mentioned earlier to replenish the board.2bag65befc595772c00bag 6
NekonyancerNext turn! Let's buy another card. *Scroll down to look at the Jewel cards again. Then continue.*1player_board_9214348765befc744a5e000
NekonyancerWe currently have 2 green tokens, 1 red token, and 1 pearl token. That's not enough to buy this blue card, but the red card we bought last turn counts as a [red]*permanent red token,*[/red] decreasing the costs of all future Jewel cards! [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed7d57e915.22841399.jpg[/img]2card-8-front65befc744a5e000
NekonyancerBefore we buy it, note the *purple icon* in the top-left corner of the card. Purple icons denote special *abilities* that activate upon purchase. This particular one will give us an extra turn! [green][tip] You can hover over any card to read details about its ability! [tip] You can click on the "?" in the bottom left corner for info about all abilities![/green] *Buy the card!*3card-8-front65befc744a5e010
NekonyancerWith our extra turn, let's learn about the 3rd option for our mandatory action: *taking a gold token and reserving a card.* Gold tokens are wild. You can use them as any color token, even a pearl! *Take the gold token in the bottom-left corner!*1token-17-front65befc813cedf10
NekonyancerNow we have to select a card to *reserve.* Reserving a card is just like reserving a library book. It will be taken off the board and placed in a special reserve in our inventory. *Scroll down to the Jewel Cards again.*1maintitlebar_content65befce457da300
NekonyancerWe can choose any card from any row. We can even choose a face down card from one of the decks, though I doubt you'd ever want to do that. *Reserve the card in the middle of the bottom row!* [green](Step 30/51)[/green]2card-5-front65befce457da310
NekonyancerThe reserved card is now in our inventory. We haven't officially bought it yet, but no one else can buy it now! [green][tip] We can only hold a maximum of three cards in reserve at a time.[/green]1card-5-front65befcf93dc0300
NekonyancerThis particular card has all five common gem colors in the top right corner, where most cards have only 1 color. That's because it's a *joker.* When we play it, we can add it to any column in which we already have a card. It will then permanently act as a permanent gem of that color.2card-5-front65befcf93dc0300
NekonyancerThere's a problem though. This card will cost *4 black tokens and a pearl* to buy for real. [red]There aren't any black tokens left on the board![/red]3card-5-front65befcf93dc0300
NekonyancerLuckily, our opponent is about to replenish the board for us. It's almost as if he's specifically doing things to facilitate this tutorial. [green]Weird, huh?[/green] *Watch the board as it happens!*4maintitlebar_content65befcf93dc0300
NekonyancerAs you saw, the board is always replenished in a specific *pattern.* It starts in the middle, then spirals outward, according to the small arrows on the board.1maintitlebar_content65befd0b8b63300privilege-counter-wrapper-92143487 3
NekonyancerWhenever someone replenishes the board, their opponent gets a [green]*privilege!*[/green] Also, note that the board is not completely full. That's because some of the tokens are still in player inventories. [green]Remember, there are exactly 25 tokens in the game![/green]2privilege-counter-wrapper-9214348765befd0b8b63300privilege-counter-wrapper-92143487 3
NekonyancerFor our turn, *take the three black tokens in a vertical line.* Taking three tokens of the same color will give our opponent a privilege (BGA will warn you of this), but we need those blacks to play the card in our reserve. *Confirm your action.*1token-6-front65befd26b09a810
NekonyancerWe just need one more black token. Let's use our privilege to get it! [blue]*Click here!*[/blue]1usePrivilege_button65befd603f8c210usePrivilege_button 2
Nekonyancer*Take the last black token on the board!*1token-25-front65befd6c52f9710
NekonyancerScroll down to our inventory again. *Select the card in our Reserved Cards area and play it!* [green](Step 40/51)[/green]1maintitlebar_content65befd73842fd10
NekonyancerRemember, Joker cards must be added to a column in which we already have a card, so in this case, we can add it to either red or blue. [blue]There are two important things to consider here:[/blue] *1.* The joker will act as a *permanent gem* of whichever column we put it in. Do we want another permanent red gem or another permanent blue?1card-5-front65befd7fca16c00
Nekonyancer*2.* The card has a 1 in the top-left corner, which means it's worth 1 Prestige Point. [green]Getting 10 Prestige Points in a single column is a possible way to achieve victory![/green]2card-5-front65befd7fca16c00
NekonyancerEventually, we will want to buy powerful cards from Tier 2 and 3, as they're usually worth more Prestige Points. [green]Take a look at the available cards. Do you think we should add this joker to our Red column or Blue column?[/green]3card-5-front65befd7fca16c00
Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed7d7662a6.24335915.jpg[/img] [red]*These two red cards*[/red] alone are worth *6* of the *10* points we need, and both of them cost a lot of red as well. *Place our Joker card in the red column!*4maintitlebar_content65befd7fca16c10
Nekonyancer*Great job!* [blue]I think you got the gist of the gameplay now, but there's a couple more things I need to go over.[/blue] First, let's cover *crowns.*2card-5-front65befd91688cd00
NekonyancerThe first card we bought had a crown at the top, so when we bought it, we gained a crown. As with most other things in this game, we can easily check each player's crowns in the [green]*Player Info Panels.*[/green] [green]Collecting 10 crowns is the 2nd way to win.[/green]3card-28-front65befd91688cd00player_board_92143487 8 player_board_11941354 8
NekonyancerThese are *Royal cards.* When we get our *3rd* and *6th* crowns, we can immediately take an available Royal card from the supply. Each one has prestige points and an ability in the top-left corner, just like Jewel cards. [green]Taking a Royal card does not require an action![/green]4royal-card-4-front65befd91688cd00
NekonyancerSince Royal cards are colorless, they can't contribute to the victory condition of 10 Prestige in a single column. However, they help a lot with the last condition - [blue]20 total Prestige Points.[/blue]5royal-card-3-front65befd91688cd00
NekonyancerIf you're going for a total of 20, you'll probably want to pick up cards like *this one.* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed7d9f6170.79165059.jpg[/img] It doesn't have a gem in the top-right corner, so it won't offer any future discounts and can't go into a column, but it's worth [green]3 Prestige -[/green] more than any other Tier 1 card!6maintitlebar_content65befd91688cd00
Nekonyancer[blue]One last thing to mention![/blue] The game will *immediately end* when someone achieves a victory condition, even if one player had one more turn than the other!7score-tile65befd91688cd00
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Splendor: Duel!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! A big thank you goes out to *thoun* for bringing this game to BGA! Have fun! :D8maintitlebar_content65befd91688cd00
