villager[tip] [green]This tutorial is best experienced on a full screen desktop browser at 1080p[/green] Welcome to the tutorial for 7 Wonders Duel! Prepare to be transported to the age where civilizations lived and died on the edge of swords, innovative science, and scarce resources.2maintitlebar_content000player_wonders_84140691 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWMzMGM1ZjMxNy4wODkyNDQzOC5qcGc=/0/0 player_name_84140691 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWMzMGM1ZjMxNy4wODkyNDQzOC5qcGc=/-905/-7
villagerIn 7 Wonders Duel, each player is leading a civilization and will construct *Buildings* and *Wonders*. All of the Buildings constructed by a player together with their Wonders are called a *“city”*. This is your empty City at the bottom of the game screen. 3maintitlebar_content000
villagerThe first thing we need to do is draft 4 Wonders into our city / tableau. The game comes with 12 Wonders. Drafting occurs over 2 Rounds. We are currently in Drafting Round 1 of 2, where BGA is offering 4 of the 12 Wonders. Your opponent started first in this Drafting Round 1, and selected the Wonder "The Appian Way", which has been added to their city. Note: drafting a Wonder doesn't construct it. Think of this phase as selecting 4 Wonder "blueprints" that you will eventually try building in your city.5player_wonders_89616434000wonder_11 11 wonder_2 6 wonder_9 6 wonder_6 6
villagerYou must be wonder-ing :) How to choose a Wonder? Let's look at how to interpret the card. If you hover over a Wonder card, you will see the *Resource costs* on the left, and the *Effects* when constructed on the right. 6maintitlebar_content000player_wonders_84140691 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWMzMTQ4OTY1NS4yOTAzMDAzMS5qcGc=/0/0 wonder_selection_block aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWMzMTQ4OTY1NS4yOTAzMDAzMS5qcGc=/1046/237
villagerThe "construction cost" of a Wonder is paid using Resources. *To generate the needed resources, you need to construct Buildings in your city.* The basic ones are brown and grey buildings. Brown buildings produce the 3 Raw Material resources, Clay, Wood, and Stone: And Grey buildings produce the 2 Manufactured resources, Glass and Papyrus: 7maintitlebar_content000
villagerThe most common Effect icons are *Military Shields* and *VPs*: Other Effects can easily be understood by hovering over the Wonder card.8maintitlebar_content000
villagerIt's your turn to draft a Wonder. *select The Great Library* If you hover over the Wonder, you will see its Cost and Effects. 9wonder_6010wonder_6 16
villagerIn Drafting Round 1, you get to choose 2 Wonders consecutively. Let's *select the Statue of Zeus* 1maintitlebar_content61c4cb43671f510wonder_9 16
villagerYour opponent drafted the Colossus, whose effects are hopefully now easy to understand visually.. - 2 Shields - 3 VP1wonder_261c4cb4529ce000wonder_2 6
villagerWe are now in Drafting Round 2. You go first, then the opponent chooses twice, and finally you take the last Wonder. *select the Temple of Artemis* 2maintitlebar_content61c4cb4529ce010wonder_4 16
villagerAll 8 Wonders have now been drafted! *It's time for the Duel to start.* The game is played over 3 Ages, starting with Age 1. BGA automatically deals out all Building cards (from the Age 1 deck) in a special pyramid shape.1page-title61c4cb88795fc00
villagerIn each Age, each player has the chance to play approximately 10 cards per Age to : - earn coins - strengthen their armies - make scientific discoveries - develop their city. In 7 Wonders Duel, there are 3 ways to claim victory: 1) Military supremacy 2) Scientific supremacy 3) Civilian victory [red]*Military and Scientific victories can happen at any time and end the game immediately. *[/red] If, by the end of the third Age, no one has yet won the game, the players add up their victory points, and the player with the highest score is declared the winner (called Civilian victory) I will explain these victory conditions in more detail soon.. *let's get our city started first.* 2maintitlebar_content61c4cb88795fc00
villagerEarlier, we saw Building cards (brown and grey) that generate resources. Here's a reference for the other kinds of Building cards that you can play during the 3 Ages. 3maintitlebar_content61c4cb88795fc00
villagerYou may have noticed that not all Building cards are immediately playable in Age 1. Some are face-down.. and some are face-up, but covered by other cards. *On your turn, you must choose an “accessible” card in the card structure and play it. * [green]An accessible card is a card which isn’t partially covered by other cards.[/green]4maintitlebar_content61c4cb88795fc005_1 8 5_3 8 5_5 8 5_7 8 5_9 8 5_11 8
villagerIt's your opponent's turn, and they must choose to play one of the "accessible cards". (highlighted) A card chosen can be played in one of *three different ways*: 1. Construct the Building 2. Discard the card to obtain coins 3. Construct a Wonder5pagemaintitletext61c4cb88795fc005_1 8 5_3 8 5_5 8 5_7 8 5_9 8 5_11 8
villagerSome of the accessible cards need Coins to purchase and play. Note that when the game is setup, both players start with 7 Coins in their treasury (highlighted on the top right of each players tableau).65_161c4cb88795fc005_1 6 player_area_89616434_coins 12 player_area_84140691_coins 12
villagerFor their first turn, your opponent chose to spend 3 Coins and play the yellow Commercial building, Stone Reserve, into their city. Hover over the cards at any time to see their purchase costs and effects.1player_building_1861c4cba1d302200player_building_18 6
villagerI should highlight the excellent game summary panel on the right side of the screen. You will find this in every game on BGA, and is particularly helpful when learning new games so that you can see the descriptive actions.2log_761c4cba1d302200
villagerIt's your turn! *select the highlighted card, Wood Reserve, to purchase and play for 3 Coins* Remember there are 3 ways to play any accessible card? Click the button *Construct Building* shown below the pyramid of cards. 35_361c4cba1d3022105_3 16
villagerNotice that by purchasing those two bottom row building cards, another card (Lumber Yard) has become [green]"accessible"[/green] as it is no longer fully or partially covered by other cards. It has also been automatically turned face-up.14_261c4ced33098c004_2 8
villagerYour opponent built a grey building card that generates Papyrus for them, at the cost of 1 Coin.1player_building_861c4cef68688a00player_building_8 6
villagerNotice BGA puts a green checkmark below cards that are FREE to play, because they: - either have no construction cost - you have the required resources in your developing city. [green]To help speed up your decisions, always glace at these icons overlaid on the building cards. - The top icon shows the cost for your opponent - the bottom icon shows your cost[/green]25_561c4cef68688a004_2 8 5_5 8 5_11 8
villager*Let's build the FREE Quarry card*, that will generate the raw material, Stone, in our city. Note, its a single unit of Stone. *Remember to click the Construct Building button after selecting the Quarry card*35_1161c4cef68688a105_11 16
villagerHopefully you have a good idea on how to play accessible cards now. Lets allow the game to move forward a few turns for some more buildings to be constructed.1maintitlebar_content61c4cff44e34400
villagerIt's your opponent's turn. They have 0 Coins in their treasury. They are planning to discard one of the accessible cards, and get Coins from the Bank. [green]*When discarding any building card, the Bank will reward players 2 Coins + 1 Coin for every Yellow building card in their city. *[/green] In your opponent's case, they will get 4 Coins.1maintitlebar_content61c4d0122c02e00player_building_18 8 player_building_19 8 player_area_89616434_coins 12
villagerYour opponent discarded the Garrison card and was awarded 4 Coins.1player_area_89616434_coins61c4d0166702d00player_area_89616434_coins 11
villagerIt's your turn! *Let's also discard the Guard Tower card.* As we have only 1 yellow building in our city, we get 2 Coins + 1 Coin = 3 Coins. *Select the highlighted card, and click the "Discard for 3 Coins" button below.*2pagemaintitletext61c4d0166702d105_5 16 player_building_20 8
villagerGoing to let the game auto-play a few more turns again..1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61c4d02aa5cf500
villagerYour opponent has a choice of 2 accessible cards in the pyramid. One is a blue free Civilian building card called Theater, that awards 3 VP. If you hover over it, you will notice that it has a CHAINING effect, which reads "you can build Statue for free in Age 2". The other choice is a green Scientific building card called Pharmacist, for the cost of 2 Coins, which has the benefit of CHAINING the Dispensary building for free in Age 2. I highly recommend scrolling down your game screen to see the overview of all the buildings in this game, and their chaining links. 1maintitlebar_content61c4d06681f67004_6 6 4_8 6
villagerand for the experts, do note that : - 3 Building cards from every Age are removed randomly when setting up the game - only 3 out of 7 guilds are in play in Age 3 Guilds are essentially buildings with special end-game scoring conditions. They will intuitively make sense after you complete this tutorial.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61c4d06681f6700
villagerHowever, your opponent decided to discard instead, and get 4 Coins.1player_area_89616434_coins61c4d07cce34000
villagerThis turn, your opponent decides to construct the green Scientific building called Workshop. If you hover over the card, you will see that it not only awarded 1 VP, but it also added "1 scientific symbol" to your opponent's city. Notice the count that says [green]*1/6 symbols*[/green], right above the Scientific card played? [red]If at any point in the game, your opponent constructs 6 UNIQUE Scientific buildings (each has its own symbol), they will INSTANTLY WIN the game via Scientific Supremacy.[/red]1player_building_1461c4d08db5e6600player_building_14 6
villagerThis is a good time to also learn about the benefits of gathering a PAIR of Scientific symbols, and choosing a Progress Token from the green bar highlighted here. There are 7 different scientific symbols in the game 2player_building_861c4d08db5e6600board_middle_container 6 draftpool aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWMzMzdjMTRkNS4yODc4NjgwNC5qcGc=/268/0 board_middle_container aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWMzMzdjMTRkNS4yODc4NjgwNC5qcGc=/151/0
villagerAge 2 has started! BGA deals out the Age 2 cards in another special reverse-pyramid shape. Obviously, this changes the count and location of accessible cards.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61c4d0bf3677b00
villagerBGA is prompting you to choose who will go first in this 2nd Age. *The player with the weakest military chooses which player begins the next Age.* A player has a weaker military if the Conflict pawn is on their side of the board. 2pagemaintitletext61c4d0bf3677b00conflict_pawn 12
villagerwhich leads us to learning about another aspect in 7 Wonders Duel.. Military conflicts. See the highlighted red board? It's placed between the 2 players.. Anytime a player gets Military Shields (either through red Military building cards, or from building Wonders), the Conflict Token pawn is pushed to the other direction. 3maintitlebar_content61c4d0bf3677b00conflict_pawn 12 board_middle_container 6
villagerAs the Conflict pawn is currently in the center, the last active player, which is You, gets to choose the starting player.4conflict_pawn61c4d0bf3677b00conflict_pawn 12
villagerLet's also learn about the INSTANT WIN condition, Military Supremacy. It's quite simple.. push the Conflict token all the way to the other side, and instantly win the game. Along the way, you also force the opponent to lose 2 Coins and 5 Coins (highlighted). 5maintitlebar_content61c4d0bf3677b00conflict_pawn 15 f1a9db03-4dc0-4e14-8b1f-2c6e06430181 3 4f243a34-cca9-4129-8b1e-b81196004fa3 3 board_middle_container 6
villagerYou chose yourself to start this Age! *Let's build the highlighted card, Caravansary.* Notice that the printed construction cost on this yellow commercial building is: 2 Coins + Glass + Papyrus. [red]Our city is NOT producing Glass or Papyrus. We will have to buy these from the Bank.[/red] In this game, buying missing resources has a simple formula: - player pays 2 Coins + number of symbols of the same resources produced by the *brown and grey cards of the opposing city*1maintitlebar_content61c4d0d3117e7005_5 6
villager*Clarifications* • Note that the purchasing cost is calculated according to the resources present in your opponent’s city, but the purchases are paid to the bank. • There is no limit to the number of resources you may purchase on your turn. • The resources produced by yellow cards and by Wonders aren’t factored into trading costs. • Some commercial Buildings (yellow cards) change the trading rules and set the cost of some resources to 1 coin. See highlighted buildings for examples.2maintitlebar_content61c4d0d3117e700player_building_18 6 player_building_19 6 player_building_20 6
villagerWhen you hover over the highlighted Caravansary card, BGA shows a tooltip with all the resource Trading math done for you, and summarizes these costs on the card too. 3maintitlebar_content61c4d0d3117e7005_5 6
villagerWe have plenty of Coins in our treasury.. currently 17. We can easily afford 8 for this useful yellow building, which has the effect of producing 1 unit of any raw material, Wood / Clay / Stone. *Build the Caravansary to proceed*4maintitlebar_content61c4d0d3117e7105_5 16
villagerYour opponent constructed the red Military building, Walls, which has 2 Military Shields as its effect. This moved the Conflict Pawn 2 spaces towards our capital.1maintitlebar_content61c4d0eb3d5a700player_building_31 6 conflict_pawn 12
villagerLet's do the same.. and *build the Parade Ground* red military building. It's benefit of 2 Military Shields will equalize the Conflict Pawn back to the center where it started.2maintitlebar_content61c4d0eb3d5a7104_6 16 conflict_pawn 12
villagerWe finally see the 3rd use of a Building card.. ie put it face down under a Wonder, and construct the Wonder by paying for its required resources. Constructing the Appian Way wonder provided your opponent with the benefit of an *extra turn.*1wonder_1161c4d133375af00wonder_11 6
villager...which they promptly used to build another Scientific building, the Laboratory. Note that your opponent now has a pair of matching scientific symbols, which lets them choose one of 5 available Progress Tokens.1maintitlebar_content61c4d13b7e1d400player_building_14 6 player_building_35 6
villagerThey chose "Strategy". Hover over the token to see its benefits. Going to let the game auto-play a few more turns..1curve61c4d1403533b00
villagerIts time for us to build one of our Wonders, The Great Library. BGA has a green checkmark next to it, meaning we have all the needed resources in our city.1wonder_661c4d19cba7ce00wonder_6 6
villager1) select the highlighted card, Rostrum, which will be used face down 2) *click the button below it labeled "Construct a Wonder"* 3) select The Great Library from your tableau of 4 Wonders22_861c4d19cba7ce10wonder_6 19 2_8 17
villagerThe benefit of constructing The Great Library has been triggered. You can choose 1 of 3 unused Progress Tokens that were not selected for this game. (the game comes with 10 Progress Tokens, out of which 5 are randomly selected and placed on the board).1pagemaintitletext61c4d1c41ad5500
villagerAs both players are now starting to build their Wonders, its very important to note that the game literally allows only 7 Wonders to be built. [red]As soon as either player constructs the game’s 7th Wonder, the last Wonder, which has not yet been built, is immediately returned to the box.[/red]1pagemaintitletext61c4d1ca24b3400wonder_11 6 wonder_2 6 wonder_5 6 wonder_7 6 wonder_6 6 wonder_9 6 wonder_4 6 wonder_1 6
villagerAnd with that last rule, you know all the core rules to enjoy a wonderful game of 7 Wonders Duel. I will leave you with a reminder of the victory conditions again, especially how end game scoring is done to determine a Civilian Victory.2maintitlebar_content61c4d1ca24b3400draftpool aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWMzNDEzMzY4My40MTIzNzYwMS5qcGc=/268/0 board_middle_container aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWMzNDEzMzY4My40MTIzNzYwMS5qcGc=/151/0 player_name_84140691 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWMzNDEzMzY4My40MTIzNzYwMS5qcGc=/-850/-4
villagerIf you made it so far, I totally understand that there seem to be so many rules... :) but hopefully this tutorial has given you a sense of how the game flows. I recommend playing through the tutorial a couple more times to get a feel for all the turn options.3maintitlebar_content61c4d1ca24b3400
villagerBut to boil it down to a summary, here's what you learnt: 1) Instantly win 7 Wonders Duel by building up your army, ie playing lots of Red cards, and pushing the Conflict token to the top. 2) Or instantly win by building 6 UNIQUE Science buildings (Green cards) 3) Or amass a lot of victory points to score a Civilian victory.4maintitlebar_content61c4d1ca24b3400
villagerOn your turn, 1) Choose from the ACCESSIBLE cards - Construct a building by paying its resource costs - Discard for 2 Coins + 1 Coin for every Yellow building card - Construct a Wonder by paying its resource costs, and placing the building card under it. If you need to buy missing resources, you can get them from the Bank. [tip] sometimes your card selection may make some good cards accessible to your opponent.. that's one of the hard and fun decisions in the game :)5maintitlebar_content61c4d1ca24b3400
