Nekonyancer[blue]Welcome to *Hawaiian Hanafuda,*[/blue] a traditional game for 2-7 people played with Japanese Hanafuda cards! [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1maintitlebar_content000
Nekonyancer*Hanafuda* are Japanese playing cards that are similar to the standard cards used in Western cultures. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img691d4b8d561545.17362008.jpg[/img] However, instead of having 4 suits of 13 cards each, Hanafuda cards have *12 suits* of *4 cards* each.2maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerEach suit features a different plant and is associated with a different month of the year. For example, [red]*these cards*[/red] feature maple, representing the month of October. If you hold your mouse over them, the tooltip will show you other cards in the Maple/October suit! [green][tip] Every card in the game has a helpful tooltip![/green]3card_21000card_21 1 myhand_item_3 1
NekonyancerIn addition to suits, each card belongs to a different *type.* [blue]There are four types. In Hawaiian Hanafuda, each type has a point value:[/blue] *Bright:* 20 points. Often has fancy artwork. *Ribbon:* 10 pts. Features a ribbon. *Animal:* 5 pts. Features animals, including insects. *Chaff:* 0 pts. Features only the month's plant. There are some exceptions to this scoring pattern, but you can see each card's point value in its tooltip!4maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerContrary to what you might expect, [red]The four types are not evenly distributed among the twelve suits.[/red] The *Maple/October* suit, for instance, has 2 chaff cards, 1 animal, and 1 ribbon. [tip] If you want to check what types are in each suit, click on the [blue]*Month List*[/blue] at the top of the screen!5card_21000btnMonthList 7
Nekonyancer[blue]Now that we know how Hanafuda cards work, let's learn about the mechanics of *Hawaiian Hanafuda!*[/blue] Players earn points by playing cards that match the suits of other cards. In doing so, they earn points. If they make sets of certain cards, called *yaku,* they can penalize their opponents! [green]After a customizable number of rounds, whoever has the most points wins![/green]6maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerThis is a 2-player game, so each player was dealt *eight cards.* Another eight cards were placed on the table. These numbers vary with the number of players. The remaining cards were placed in the middle of the table as a [red]*draw deck.*[/red]7maintitlebar_content000card_deck 1
NekonyancerThe first thing we must do is check the cards in our hand and on the field. If we spot four cards from the same month (called a *hiki*) between these two places, we can grab them all! [blue]Hmm... I don't see any sets. Oh well.[/blue]8myhand_item_29000
NekonyancerNext, I'll explain how a turn works. On your turn, you must play a card from your hand. If it is from the *same suit* as another card on the table, you claim both of them, earning points! If there is no other card of that suit on the table, your played card simply stays on the table.9maintitlebar_content000
Nekonyancer*Click on this card to play it!* It's from the same month as [blue]*this card!*[/blue]10myhand_item_31010card_47 2 myhand_item_31 16
Nekonyancer*Great!* We matched a *Ribbon* card (10 pts) with an *Animal* card (5 pts) earning a [green]total of 15 points![/green]1card_31644882189f57500
Nekonyancer[blue]*Both cards*[/blue] were moved to our inventory and sorted by type. This is important because we can make special combinations - called *yaku* - with them later.2ribbon_11941354_item_47644882189f57800ribbon_11941354_item_47 2 animal_11941354_item_31 2
NekonyancerAfter playing a card from our hand, we must flip over another card from [blue]*the deck*[/blue] and play it!3card_deck644882189f57800card_deck 2
Nekonyancer*Lucky!* The card we drew was from the [red]*same month*[/red] as another card on the table, so we can claim those as well! If we drew a card that did not match, it would simply be left on the table.4card_4064488218a040d00card_23 1 card_40 1
NekonyancerThat's the end of our first turn! [blue]Now our opponent will take their turn...[/blue]5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment64488218a1e5e00
NekonyancerNext, I want to point out a special card in our hand. This is the *Gaji* card. There's only one copy of it in the deck. It can be used as a *wild;* it can match with any card on the table! [green][tip] If this card ends up on the field at the beginning of the game, it can be claimed by playing a November card.[/green]1myhand_item_106448822c643d600myhand_item_10 2
NekonyancerWe can use the Gaji card to get this [blue]*Bright August*[/blue] card! Remember, Bright cards are worth *20* points! *Click on the Gaji card and then on the [blue]Bright August[/blue] card!*2card_86448822c643d610card_8 2 myhand_item_10 16
NekonyancerIn games with more than 2 players, the Gaji card has one more effect. Whoever claims the Gaji card can claim any unmatched cards at the end of the round!1chaff_11941354_item_106448823deb6e800
NekonyancerLike last turn, we now have to draw a card from the deck and see if we can match that one too...2card_deck6448823deb6e800
Nekonyancer*Nope! No match!* Since there was no match, the card just stays on the table.3card_196448823ded55b00
NekonyancerAlright, next I'll explain *"Yaku."* Yaku are special combinations of 3 cards. Whenever you make one, [red]all your opponents immediately lose 50 points![/red] There are 8 different yaku in this game. You can check them all by clicking on the [blue]*Yaku List.*[/blue] [green]You can also check each card's tooltip to see what yaku it's a part of![/green]4maintitlebar_content6448823ded55b00btnYakuList 7
NekonyancerAlright, I'm going to start skipping ahead...5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6448823ded55b00
NekonyancerWe just got the [blue]*September Animal*[/blue] card, which happens to be in the same yaku as the [green]*August Bright*[/green] card. If you check one of their tooltips, you'll see that the third card in the yaku has pink and red flowers. [green]I hope we can find it![/green]1animal_11941354_item_30644883029173f00animal_11941354_item_30 2
Nekonyancer[green]*There it is!*[/green] Shoot, we need to play a *March* card to claim it, and we don't have one! Uh... I guess *play the May Animal card instead...*1card_764488393339de10card_7 3 myhand_item_27 16
Nekonyancer*Wow!* We drew a [red]*March*[/red] card from the deck, matching the card we needed to complete the *Yaku!*1card_6644883a217dbf00card_6 1
NekonyancerNow you can see the result of the round. We did really well, didn't we? I feel bad for our opponent though.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment644883ae9e88700
NekonyancerOkay, that's everything! Remember, you can choose how many rounds the game will last in the lobby options. [green]At the end of the game, whoever has the most points wins![/green]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment644883ae9e88700
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Hawaiian Hanafuda!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! A big thank you goes out to *ufm* for bringing this game to BGA! Have fun! :D3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment644883ae9e88700
