Tofu666*Welcome!* In 1703, Czar Peter the Great founded Saint Petersburg, a city which quickly became associated with the birth of the Russian Empire and Russia's entry into the modern age. It is still considered an important economic, scientific, cultural centre.1maintitlebar_content001
Tofu666Players are competing to contribute the most to the development of Saint Petersburg by hiring a workforce, constructing buildings, and attracting aristocrats to the city.2maintitlebar_content000
Tofu666A game *round* is made up of four *phases*: [green]Worker[/green]...3deck_Worker000
Tofu666[blue]Building[/blue]...4deck_Building000
Tofu666[red]Aristocrat / Noble[/red]....5deck_Aristocrat000
Tofu666And Trading / Exchange.6deck_Trading000
Tofu666You start with 25 rubles to buy cards to add to your tableau.7rublecount_icon_p87819002000
Tofu666All cards are designed in a similar style, so elements are in the same locations. All cards have a *cost*, located in the *upper left corner*. i.e. this card costs 3 rubles. At the *bottom* you will find the card's *income and/or special function*. i.e. this card gives an income of 3 rubles. ([green]Worker[/green] cards also have a certain type--this one is "woodworker". More on this later!)8card_3_0000
Tofu666These icons show which player goes first in a given *phase*. Your opponent has the first go in the [green]Worker[/green] and Trading phases.9token_wrap_p90774036000
Tofu666On your turn, you want to buy this worker, after all, it is cheaper than the other two! (click the card to select it, then click *Buy* in the top banner)1card_2_0622b627aad6d810card_2_0 3
Tofu666One worker left, and you definitely want to buy it. Workers are the main way you earn more rubles, so you can buy more cards! (click on the card, then *Buy* in the top banner)1card_0_0622b627ebd84110card_0_0 3
Tofu666At the end of each *phase*, you earn the income for the cards of that colour. Your two workers just earned you six more rubles!1stp_playertable_87819002622b6280e975700stp_playertable_87819002_item_28 3 stp_playertable_87819002_item_108 3
Tofu666You go first in the [blue]Building[/blue] and [red]Aristocrat[/red] *phases*. Buildings usually earn you Victory Points as opposed to rubles. Let's buy the simplest of all buildings, a *Market*.2token_wrap_p87819002622b6280e975700
Tofu666A Market costs 5 rubles and earns you 1 VP at the end of each [blue]Building[/blue] *phase*. (Click on the Market and Buy it!)3card_5_0622b6280e975710card_5_0 2
Tofu666Let's not spend all our money. *This is a common mistake of new players*. As we are only making 6 rubles a *round*, we need to save some to invest in hiring new workers!! (click *Pass*)1button_2622b62a11fd7f10button_2 1
Tofu666Alright! We have earned 1 VP from our Market at the end of the [blue]Building[/blue] *phase*.1player_score_87819002622b62a77e8eb00
Tofu666We can quickly check how much each player earns in rubles (top row) and VP (bottom row). i.e. we earn 6 rubles and 0 VP in the [green]Worker[/green] phase, 0 rubles and 1 VP in the [blue]Building[/blue] phase, and nothing (yet) in the [red]Aristocrat[/red] phase. (there is NO INCOME EARNED in the Trading phase!!) It is a good idea to check your standing against other players often.2income_wrap_p87819002622b62a77e8eb00
Tofu666After players earn income, any cards left on the board slide to the right, and new ones for the next *phase* are added to the board to fill empty columns.3card_5_0622b62a77e8eb00
Tofu666This is a sweet card! (aren't you glad you saved your money?) Sure, a Judge is expensive (16) but will earn you 5 rubles and 2 VP at the end of each [red]Aristocrat[/red] *phase*. (click on the card, then *Buy*)4card_6_0622b62a77e8eb10card_6_0 1
Tofu666There are no more nobles to buy, so let's click *Pass*. (*All players* must pass in order before we move to the next round--if your opponents take actions, you can still jump back in. i.e. passing *does not* exempt you from more actions! However, If you are certain you don't want to take an action regardless of what your opponents do, use the *Enable Auto Pass* button)1button_2622b62ae003e310
Tofu666The Trading deck is made of the other types of cards (worker/building/aristocrat). You can tell a trading card by the small square around the price. Buying them is a bit different--you need to *exchange/discard* a card already in your tableau of the same colour, and you pay the *difference* in price (minimum 1 ruble).1card_6_0622b62b030c8b00
Tofu666Another action you can do is take a card into your hand--this is what your opponent did. You can hold up to 3 cards in your hand. This reserves them for you to play on a later turn. You can see each player's hand and which type of cards they hold here.1cardicon_p90774036_0622b62b96a1dd00
Tofu666Let's do that with this card so we can save it for later. We can't afford it now, and as we already said: We want to save our money for hiring more workers! (click the card and then *Add to Hand*)2card_7_0622b62b96a1dd10card_7_0 2
Tofu666Let's *Pass*, as there are no more actions we want to do right now.1button_2622b62c02a84510
Tofu666Good work! We've finshed one *round*! As we said, there is no income earned in the Trading *phase*, but two things happen. FIRST, any cards left on the board shift to the right and down (If there are cards on the bottom row when a subsequent *round* ends, they are discarded).1card_5_1622b62c18539c00
Tofu666Second, the players switch the *phases* which they go first. We get to buy the first worker this *round*!2token_wrap_p87819002622b62c18539c00
Tofu666This is the cheapest worker so let's buy it. (click the card, then *Buy*)3card_7_0622b62c18539c10card_7_0 3
Tofu666Here's Czar Peter--Though he is expensive, he is special because he is ALL worker types! (We will see how worker types matter when we exchange workers later)1card_6_0622b62c8c6cb900
Tofu666There are no more workers, so let's *Pass* so we can earn some more money!1button_2622b62cbe5ad710
Tofu666Nice! We just earned 9 rubles--it's not much but at least we are moving in the right direction. If we are smart with when we spend our money we can hire more workers each round and it will start to really pay off!)1rublecount_p87819002622b62ce4573400
Tofu666Not all buildings just earn VP. This one costs 2 but is worth 6 when you exchange it! 2card_4_1622b62ce4573400
Tofu666Here's another Market. *Any cards that weren't bought last round and ended up in the bottom row are now 1 ruble cheaper!* In addition, you get a *discount of 1 ruble for each card of the same name you already own*. We own one Market already, so we get a discount of 2 rubles total! Being savvy with your rubles will allow you to earn more for less, isn't that what we all want? (*Buy* the Market)1card_3_1622b62e45e89910card_3_1 2
Tofu666Let's save some money and *Pass*.1button_2622b62f44b76c10
Tofu666Oh-oh... Looks like your opponent could afford one of those Controllers, but you can't! Let's add it to our hand. (click the card, then *Add to Hand*)1card_7_0622b62fc8967910card_7_0 1
Tofu666No more nobles to be had, so let's *Pass*.4button_2622b6307e99b910
Tofu666OK, time to talk about exchanging workers! You can only exchange a worker for one of the same type (woodworker, golddigger, woolworker, trapper, or shipbuilder).1card_7_0622b630928ec100
Tofu666This is a woodworker, as shown by the icon in the top right of the card. We have one of those already, so we can exchange it for this one! (*Buy* the Carpenter Workshop and then click on your Lumberjack to *Exchange*)2card_7_0622b630928ec110card_7_0 3 stp_playertable_87819002_item_28 3
Tofu666Czar Peter is every type, so he can be *Exchanged* for any worker Trading card!1stp_playertable_90774036_item_86622b63183550b00stp_playertable_90774036_item_86 3
Tofu666There are no more actions we want to take, so let's *Pass*.1button_2622b631f3777510
Tofu666We already have a Gold Miner, so this card costs 1 ruble less! (*Buy* the Gold Miner)1card_6_0622b632b82c5610card_6_0 3
Tofu666Looks like our opponent is out of money. Let's buy another worker! (*Buy* the Fur Trapper)1card_5_0622b63338d20710card_5_0 3
Tofu666We can't afford any more workers, so we will *Pass*.1button_2622b633a8f24610
Tofu666We just earned 15 rubles! Slow and steady progress is what it's all about.1rublecount_p87819002622b63423892300
Tofu666If both players pass without taking cards off the board, income is still earned but no new cards are added when we go to the next *phase*!1deck_Aristocrat622b6369c0cd600
Tofu666But we have a noble in our hand to play, remember?2stp_myhand_item_39622b6369c0cd600
Tofu666Don't forget to play the cards in your hand at the right time! (click the Controller, then *Buy*)3stp_myhand_item_39622b6369c0cd610stp_myhand_item_39 1
Tofu666Again no cards were bought from the board, so no new ones are added.1deck_Trading622b637daa34500
Tofu666We are going to *Pass*.1button_2622b63a2b0ecd10
Tofu666Let's buy this Shepherd, it's the cheapest worker. (*Buy* the Shepherd)1card_7_0622b63a467e7810card_7_0 3
Tofu666Don't forget to look for good deals in the lower row! (*Buy* the Fur Trapper)1card_1_1622b63b11b04410card_1_1 3
Tofu666Looks like our opponent is out of money. We can just afford this discounted Ship Builder though! (*Buy* the Ship Builder)1card_0_1622b63bd46dc010card_0_1 3
Tofu666We are out of money, let's *Pass*.1button_2622b63c33180c10
Tofu666We are approximately halfway through the game, so it's time to start making some victory points. Our opponent just bought a bigger building!1square_2_1622b63d62f65800
Tofu666Looks like they are making (1+9+1) 11 VP a *round* to our (0+2+3) 5 VP. Maybe we should start investing in some more buildings to increase our VP income.2income_wrap_points_p90774036622b63d62f65800
Tofu666We have a bit of money, so let's buy this Hospital. It costs one less because it's in the bottom row, and an additional one less because of the power of our Carpenter's Workshop! (*Buy* the Hospital) 3card_1_1622b63d62f65810card_1_1 2
Tofu666Wait...What about exchanging that Hospital for a Palace? It will earn us 1 rouble and 5 VP! (*Buy* the Palace, then click our Hospital)1stp_myhand_item_85622b63e8ac68110stp_myhand_item_85 2 stp_playertable_87819002_item_64 2
Tofu666Ok, time to save our money (See how it's important not to spend every last ruble?)1button_2622b63f0ef9b610
Tofu666Don't pass up on any nobles if you can afford them! (*Buy* the Administrator)1card_7_0622b63fc098ec10card_7_0 1
Tofu666No more nobles to buy, let's *Pass*.1button_2622b64060bd8810
Tofu666*Oooo, look at that!* a Noble Exchange card! Each Noble Exchange card is unique, which is important for end game VP!1card_6_0622b640763ac200
Tofu666Take a look at this handy chart. It shows how many VP you earn for the number of *Unique* nobles you've attracted by the end of the game. Each player has 3 *Unique* nobles right now, so each is earning 6 VP. The points awarded are *exponential* so keep an eye on your opponent's nobles!2aristocrat_table622b640763ac200aristocrat_table 1
Tofu666Take the Senator into your hand for later. (click the card, then *Add to hand*)3card_6_0622b640763ac210card_6_0 1
Tofu666Time to *Pass* (yes, we do this a lot in Saint Petersburg!)1button_2622b640f9674210
Tofu666These numbers show how many cards are left in each deck. The *game end* is triggered when a deck runs out--usually the [blue]buildings[/blue]. Players will then finish the current *Round*, and score their nobles plus get 1 VP for each 10 rubles left.1stp_count_Building622b641287de800stp_count_Worker 3 stp_count_Building 2 stp_count_Aristocrat 1 stp_count_Trading 5
Tofu666Click continue to see a few other tips and card powers.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment622b641287de800
Tofu666The Observatory lets you look at a card from the top of any deck! Let's add this to our tableau. (*Buy* the Observatory)1card_6_0622b642553c0210card_6_0 2
Tofu666The power must be used during the [blue]Building[/blue] *Phase* and if you use the power, you don't get the 1 VP income. You can Buy, Add to Hand, or Discard the card revealed. (click here, then click the [red]Aristocrat[/red] deck)1button_1622b644009cb210
Tofu666Nice! You found a Noble we don't have yet!1card_0_15622b6446f285600
Tofu666We have the money, so let's *Buy* it!2button_1622b6446f285610
Tofu666You guessed it! Let's *Pass*.1button_2622b644d210aa10
Tofu666Another noble we don't have yet! We are going to be making some good points at game end! (*Buy* the Secretary) (After this action we will jump ahead to explain some more tips about nobles....)1card_7_0622b644e46c2d10card_7_0 1
Tofu666Ok, so we already got a Warehouse Manager... but remember the Senator in our hand? If we buy a second, we can *exchange* one Warehouse Manager for the Senator and come out with more unique nobles!1card_7_0622b64d88851f00card_7_0 1
Tofu666Now we have 7 unique nobles to our opponent's 4. That's 28 VP vs. 10 VP. Unique noble points often decide the game, so don't ignore them!1aristocrat_table622b64e7b742100aristocrat_table 1
Tofu666Another unique noble! We should definitely stop our opponent from getting it!1card_6_0622b64eda7dc700
Tofu666The [blue]building[/blue] deck is now EMPTY! We play to the end of this *Round* and then the game is over. You now know the basics of how to play plus a few extra strategy tips! Good luck and have fun!!1stp_count_Building622b65178d46200
