Nekonyancer[blue]Welcome to *Roppyakken,*[/blue] a traditional Japanese *hanafuda* game for 2-3 players!
[green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1maintitlebar_content000
Nekonyancer*Hanafuda* are Japanese playing cards that are similar to the standard cards used in Western cultures.

However, instead of having 4 suits of 13 cards each, Hanafuda cards have *12 suits* of *4 cards* each.2maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerEach suit features a different plant and is associated with a different month of the year.
For example, [red]*these cards*[/red] feature maple, representing the month of October. If you hold your mouse over them, the tooltip will show you other cards in the Maple/October suit!
[green][tip] Every card in the game has a helpful tooltip![/green]3myhand_item_3000myhand_item_3 6 myhand_item_10 6
NekonyancerIn addition to suits, each card belongs to a different *type.*
[blue]There are four types. In Roppyakken, each type has a point value:[/blue]
*Bright:* 50 points. Often has fancy artwork.
*Ribbon:* 10 pts. Features a ribbon.
*Animal:* 10 pts. Often features animals, including insects.
*Chaff:* 0 pts. Features only the month's plant.4maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerContrary to what you might expect, [red]The four types are not evenly distributed among the twelve suits.[/red]
The *Maple/October* suit, for instance, has 2 chaff cards, 1 animal, and 1 ribbon.
[tip] If you want to check what types are in each suit, click on the [blue]*Month List*[/blue] at the top of the screen!

Nekonyancer[blue]Now that we know how Hanafuda cards work, let's learn about the mechanics of *Roppyakken!*[/blue]
In Roppyakken, players capture cards by playing cards that match the suits of other cards. In doing so, they earn points. If they make sets of certain cards, called *yaku,* they can earn bonus points!
[green]Once someone reaches 600 points, whoever has the most points wins![/green]6maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerThis is a 2-player game, so each player was dealt *eight cards.* Another eight cards were placed on the table. Some cards in the game will not be played.
[green]In a 3-player game, 7 cards are dealt to each player, and only 6 to the table. Every card will be played.[/green]7maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerThe first thing we must do is look at the cards in our hand, checking for *hand yaku.* If we have one, we must reveal it and gain a point reward.
[blue]There are two kinds of hand yaku:[/blue]
*3 cards of the same suit (month):* 200 points.
*All chaff cards:* 400 points.8myhand_item_10000
Nekonyancer[blue]Looks like no one has any hand yaku this game.[/blue] Next, I'll explain how a turn works.
On your turn, you must play a card from your hand. If it is from the *same suit* as another card on the table, you must claim both of them, earning points!
If there is no other card of that suit on the table, your played card simply stays on the table.10maintitlebar_content000
Nekonyancer*Click on this card to play it!*
It's from the same month as *[red]this card![/red]*11myhand_item_2010card_15 6 myhand_item_2 16
NekonyancerGreat! [red]*Both cards*[/red] went into our inventory, which is automatically sorted by type.
Both of the cards we captured are *chaff* cards.1chaff_11941354_item_262b48650ee86500chaff_11941354_item_2 6 chaff_11941354_item_15 6
NekonyancerAfter playing a card from our hand, we must flip over another card from [blue]*the deck*[/blue] and play it!2card_deck62b48650ee86500card_deck 7
NekonyancerIt turned out to be a *Maple/October/Ribbon* card, which matched another card on the table. Since they matched, we get to claim these cards too!3card_3762b48650ef09d00
NekonyancerSince one of the cards we claimed was a ribbon card, we gained points equal to its value: [blue]*ten points!*[/blue]
[green][tip] Remember, we need 600 points to end the game![/green]
Let's skip forward a few turns...4round_score_wrap_1194135462b48650f03b500round_score_wrap_11941354 2
NekonyancerOur opponent just played *[blue]The Rain man.*[/blue]
The Rain man is a limited wild card. It can match with any single non-chaff card on the table!1card_2562b48866e760800
NekonyancerEven though the Rain man is a *November* card, our opponent is using it to match with this *March* card.
[green]This was a wise choice - both of them are *Bright* cards, worth 50 points each, so our opponent will score 100 points from this![/green]1card_2562b48875bec1300
NekonyancerOkay. Right now, all four October cards are out of the deck. We already collected *[blue]two of them*[/blue], [red]*one of them*[/red] is on the table, and [green]*one*[/green] is in our hand.
*Click on the October card in our hand!*2maintitlebar_content62b48875bfdc610card_3 1 myhand_item_10 3 ribbon_11941354_item_37 2 chaff_11941354_item_30 2
NekonyancerWe just completed a set - called a *yaku* - of all four October cards, earning *[green]50 bonus points!*[/green]1ribbon_11941354_item_3762b4888d6776300animal_11941354_item_10 3 ribbon_11941354_item_37 3 chaff_11941354_item_30 3 chaff_11941354_item_3 3
NekonyancerThere are many kinds of Yaku in the game. The "Yaku List" button will show you all of them!
*Click on [blue]"Yaku List"[/blue] at the top and take a look!*
Most of the yaku are self-explanatory - if you gain the required cards, you get the point reward shown!2player_name_1194135462b4888d67f5b00btnYakuList 7
Nekonyancer[blue]These two yaku are different:[/blue]
*Four Brights* (under Bright and Animal): you win, regardless of player point totals!
*Seven Ribbons* (under Ribbon): You win, regardless of point total, unless the round ends in a [red]draw.[/red]
A round ends in a draw when one player scores 30 or fewer points in the round. When that happens, all players' scores are *negated* for that round!3player_name_1194135462b4888d67f5b00
NekonyancerNow take a look at the *Viewing tab.*
It says, *"Capturing a Willow card invalidates all viewing yakus."*
This invalidation is called "raining off." That's because Willow cards are also called [blue]rain cards[/blue]. It's hard to admire the landscape when it's raining!4player_name_1194135462b4888d67f5b00
NekonyancerThe last tab in the Yaku List shows the *hand yaku* that we checked for at the beginning of the game.
[green][tip] Remember, hand yaku only take the cards in your hand into account, not the cards you capture![/green]5player_name_1194135462b4888d67f5b00
NekonyancerOur opponent just played an [blue]*August card,*[/blue] which matches with *two* cards on the board. In this situation, he must choose and take *one* of them.
[green][tip] In the unlikely event that there are three cards of the same suit on the board, anyone can get them all by playing the fourth![/green]1card_3162b4889b0848d00card_31 2
NekonyancerIn this situation though, one of the cards is a *chaff* card, which is not very useful. When one of the cards is a chaff, BGA will automatically choose the other more valuable card for you.2card_3162b4889b0848d00
NekonyancerThat's the end of one round! As you can see, we got 70 points from the cards we captured, and 50 more points by making a yaku.
The game log gives you more details about the kinds of yaku that were made.
[red]For example, it shows that the opponent would have gotten points for a Viewing yaku, but that bonus was flushed away by a rain card![/red]1player_name_1194135462b488e96f35a00
NekonyancerMore rounds will be played until someone finally reaches *600 points.*
[green]At that point, whoever has the most points wins![/green]2maintitlebar_content62b488e96f35a00
NekonyancerThe last thing I have to mention is *variants.*
There are four different variants [blue](Standard, Base, Yukbaek, and Sambong)[/blue] in the game lobby options. Each option includes a clear explanation. I suggest you take a look for yourself! :)
And if you don't like those rulesets, you can even *customize your own!*3maintitlebar_content62b488e96f35a00
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Roppyakken!*[/blue]
If you have any questions or comments, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message!
A big thank you goes out to *ufm* for bringing this game to BGA!
Have fun! :D4maintitlebar_content62b488e96f35a00
