Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edbfa25769.89404251.jpg[/img] The River of Gold stands as a testament to prosperity. You, an esteemed merchant, must forge a trade route to bring your clan unprecedented wealth! [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerIn *River of Gold,* players will take turns constructing buildings along the riverbank, sailing down the river, or delivering trade goods to customers. Players mainly score points by delivering goods to customers, having the most influence in each region, and accomplishing *mastery goals.* [green]Whoever earns the most points wins![/green]2maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerEach player gets [blue]*1 personal die.*[/blue] This die determines what options are available to us each round. [blue]Looks like we rolled a 4![/blue] We must use it to perform one of the following actions on our turn: *- Build a structure.* *- Sail down the river.* *- Deliver goods to a customer.*3rog_reserve_92143487_dieFace000rog_reserve_92143487_dieFace 2
Nekonyancer[blue]Let's start with the "Build" action![/blue] If you *scroll down,* you'll see a queue of [red]*four buildings*[/red] in the bottom-right corner of the board. With the "Build" action, we can take one of them, pay some *Koku* (coins), and place it in one of the empty slots along the riverbank.4maintitlebar_content000rog_tile-21 6 rog_tile-37 6 rog_tile-27 6 rog_tile-24 6
NekonyancerIf we select the building on the far left, we'll also gain 1 [red]*Divine Favor,*[/red] which can be used to manipulate our die.5rog_building_bonus_favor000rog_building_bonus_favor 1
NekonyancerEach building has four important features: [red]*owner rewards,[/red] [green]build bonus,[/green] building type,* and [blue]*visitor rewards.*[/blue] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edbfc60585.01547121.jpg[/img] The [green]*build bonus*[/green] is always in the form of *influence* in whichever region we build in.6rog_tile-21000
NekonyancerWhenever someone visits the building by Sailing, they will receive the [blue]*Visitor rewards*[/blue] (next to the tapered end), and the owner will receive the [red]*Owner rewards.*[/red] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edbfdf97c0.10538784.jpg[/img] [green]Players can visit their own buildings and receive both![/green]7rog_tile-21000
NekonyancerLet's build one! *First, click on [blue]"Build"[/blue] at the top!*8btnBuild010btnBuild 2
NekonyancerYou should be able to see all four buildings along the top of the screen now. Remember, the one on the left grants 1 Divine Favor, so let's go with that one. *Select the building on the left. Then continue.*1turn_counter_wrapper6699ba69014af00btnTile_21 16
NekonyancerNext, we have to select a location for the building. Scroll up and down along the river. All the possible building slots should be highlighted in *Purple.* [red]Hmm. There are only two possible slots. Why?[/red]2turn_counter_wrapper6699ba69014af00
NekonyancerWell, we are limited by two things: [red]*1. Our die.*[/red] We rolled a 4, which has this icon: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edc0056ae6.40922960.jpg[/img] We can only build in slots with the same icon! [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edc020bbe9.55197445.jpg[/img]3rog_reserve_92143487_dieFace6699ba69014af00rog_reserve_92143487_dieFace 1
Nekonyancer[blue]*2. Our Money.*[/blue] As the first player, we started the game with *7 Koku* (other players start with 8, 9, or 10). [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edc03b95d0.53405272.jpg[/img] We can only afford the cheapest slots!4rog_reserve_92143487_money6699ba69014af00
NekonyancerNote that we are *NOT* limited by our ships' locations. You still have the [red]*building on the left*[/red] selected, right? *Select the only available building slot on the western bank. Then click on [blue]"Select and pay 6 Koku"[/blue] at the top!*5turn_counter_wrapper6699ba69014af10btnConfirm 2 btnTile_21 1
Nekonyancer*Great!* A [red]*colored disc*[/red] was placed on the building to show that we own it. Next, I'll explain the [green]*Build Bonus*[/green] in more detail. To do that, I'll need to explain *regional influence.*1rog_tile-216699ba854b33e00
NekonyancerThere are *six regions* in the game, each associated with a different die value. There's an influence track for each region, and each player starts with a colored disc on the [blue]*first space.*[/blue]2rog_influence_track_space_4_06699ba854b33e00rog_influence_track_space_4_0 2
NekonyancerWe built a building in this region with a [green]*Build Bonus*[/green] of *"4,"* so [red]*our disc*[/red] was moved 4 spaces along this region's influence track.3rog_influence_track_space_4_46699ba854b33e00rog_influence_track_space_4_4 1
NekonyancerAt the end of the game, we'll score points based on our influence in each region. You can *hover* over [red]*this box*[/red] in each region for more information on scoring. [green][tip] These boxes will be slightly different in games with more players![/green]4rog_tile-66699ba854b33e00rog_tile-3 1 rog_tile-1 1 rog_tile-2 1 rog_tile-6 1 rog_tile-4 1 rog_tile-5 1
NekonyancerWhen we advanced on this region's track, we passed by [blue]*this space,*[/blue] which has a *Porcelain* icon on it. Porcelain is a type of *trade good.* [green]Whenever we land on or pass a space with an icon, we'll receive the indicated bonus![/green]5rog_influence_track_space_4_26699ba854b33e00rog_influence_track_space_4_2 2
NekonyancerIf you scroll up to the top, you'll see that we now have [blue]*2 Porcelain*[/blue] in our inventory (we started the game with 1 of each Trade Good.) You can also see our other Trade Goods here: [red]*Silk*[/red] and [green]*Rice.*[/green] We can only hold up to 6 of each Trade Good.6rog_reserve_92143487_pottery6699ba854b33e00rog_reserve_92143487_silk 1 rog_reserve_92143487_rice 3 rog_reserve_92143487_pottery 2
NekonyancerWe completed our build action, so let's end our turn. *Click on [green]"End turn"[/green] at the top!*7btnConfirmTurn6699ba854b33e10btnConfirmTurn 3
Nekonyancer[blue]At the end of our turn, two things happened:[/blue] *First,* all the buildings in the queue [red]*shifted over*[/red] to the left to fill the empty slot. A [blue]*new building*[/blue] was drawn and placed in the right-most building slot. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edc0532415.15388056.jpg[/img]1rog_deck_size-16699ba9eb411d00
NekonyancerThe new building came from this stack of *Era 1* building tiles, which you might have to scroll up to see. When the stack is empty, we'll start using *Era 2,* and when those are gone, the game will end!2rog_tile-366699ba9eb411d00
Nekonyancer*Second,* we rolled [blue]*our die*[/blue] again. While our opponent takes their turn, we can consider our next move. [green]Hmm. We got a 2 this time.[/green]3rog_reserve_92143487_dieFace6699ba9eb411d00rog_reserve_92143487_dieFace 2
Nekonyancer[blue]Okay, next turn. Let's go sailing![/blue] BGA placed two boats on the river for each player at the beginning of the game. When we sail, we must move one ship however many spaces are indicated on our die (2 spaces, in this case).1turn_counter_wrapper6699bace24c6400
NekonyancerAfter sailing, we'll gain resources from whatever buildings are touching our destination. Let's look ahead at our destination to see what we can get.2turn_counter_wrapper6699bace24c6400
NekonyancerSpaces on the river are delineated by thick blue lines. According to our die, we must move 2 spaces. Looks like our first ship will end up here... [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edc06e1178.46337859.jpg[/img] Hmm. That destination touches these [red]*four buildings.*[/red]3turn_counter_wrapper6699bace24c6400
NekonyancerThree of those spaces are just empty building slots. Empty slots always grant visitors *1 Koku.* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edc08d2706.89420019.jpg[/img] If we go, we'll gain a total of *3 Koku.*4turn_counter_wrapper6699bace24c6400
NekonyancerThe slot in the bottom-left contains a *neutral building* that BGA placed there at the beginning of the game. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edc0af4db0.89602806.jpg[/img] It will give us 1 silk and let us draw and discard 1 customer card (more on customers later).5turn_counter_wrapper6699bace24c6400
NekonyancerAll in all, it's not a very lucrative space, and our other ship doesn't have good prospects either. Luckily, we have plenty of [red]*Divine Favor!*[/red] Each unit of Favor we spend will let us add or subtract 1 from the die. [green][tip] The numbers "wrap around," so 1 - 1 = 6.[/green] *Click on [blue]Spend Favor[/blue] at the top!*6rog_reserve_92143487_favor6699bace24c6410btnSpendFavor 2 rog_reserve_92143487_favor 1
NekonyancerIf we move our first ship 3 spaces instead of 2, we'll get rewards from the building we constructed last turn. *Click on [blue]this button[/blue] to add 1 to our die!*1btnDF_36699baf3450c110btnDF_3 2
NekonyancerGreat! Now we can sail to a much more lucrative spot. *Click on [blue]Sail![/blue]*1btnSail6699bb051561510btnSail 2
NekonyancerNow we have to select which one of our two ships we want to move. *Select the one that's further up the river.* That ship's destination should now be outlined in Purple. *Click on it! Then click on [blue]"Sail to river space #9!"[/blue]*1turn_counter_wrapper6699bb0a8988710
Nekonyancer*Awesome!* We triggered both the Visitor rewards (1 Silk) and Owner rewards (2 Koku) from our building. All in all, we got 4 Koku, 2 Silk, and the ability to draw and discard a customer card, which I'll explain next.1rog_meeple-76699bb12c201b00
NekonyancerEach player started the game with [blue]*two customer cards*[/blue] in their hand. You might have to scroll up to see ours. Each customer requires specific resources from us, but we can only deliver those resources if our die matches the icon in the *top-left corner* of the card.2rog_card-46699bb12c201b00rog_card-4 2 rog_card-16 2
NekonyancerWhen we deliver resources to a customer, we'll get... - ✅ An *immediate* effect. - 🔄 An *ongoing* bonus. - 🏆 *Endgame* points!3rog_card-46699bb12c201b00
NekonyancerFor example, to play the [red]*Artisan,*[/red] we'll need a die value of "4" and 2 Silk. ✅We'll immediately gain 2 influence in the corresponding region and place a clan marker there. 🔄For the rest of the game, buildings in that region will be cheaper for us. 🏆At the end of the game, we'll gain 1 point per 3 leftover Goods.4rog_card-46699bb12c201b00rog_card-4 1
NekonyancerEach player will also score points at the end of the game depending on how many customers they played, as indicated on [blue]*this chart.*[/blue] *2/5/9/14/20/27* points for *1/2/3/4/5/6* customers.5rog_score_customers6699bb12c201b00rog_score_customers 2
NekonyancerNow that we know more about customers, let's trigger that draw/discard reward and see what we get! *Click on the [blue]icon[/blue] at the top! Then confirm!*6turn_counter_wrapper6699bb12c201b10btnBonus_0_23 2
NekonyancerHmm, a *Noble.* The first time we play a Noble, one of our ships will be replaced with a *Royal Ship.* According to this particular Noble, we'll get a bonus point whenever our Royal Ship visits an opponent's building. [green][tip] Each noble will empower our Royal Ship in a different way, and those benefits stack![/green]1rog_card-286699bb20f014400
NekonyancerI prefer the Noble. *Select the [red]Artisan.[/red] Then click on [blue]Discard Artisan 4[/blue] at the top.*2rog_card-46699bb20f014410customActions 2 rog_card-4 1
NekonyancerOkay, that's it for our turn. *Click on [green]End turn![/green]*1btnConfirmTurn6699bb37143e810btnConfirmTurn 3
Nekonyancer*Next turn!* I already explained how customers work, but we didn't have a chance to play one. Let's play one now. Hmm, both of our customers require a 4 though, and we rolled a 5. *Click on [blue]Spend Favor[/blue] at the top!*1rog_card-166699bb77b13b310btnSpendFavor 2
Nekonyancer*Click [blue]here[/blue] to subtract 1 from our die.*1btnDF_46699bb82769be10btnDF_4 2
NekonyancerNow we have the appropriate die value! *Click on [blue]Deliver![/blue]*1btnDeliver6699bb86610ea10btnDeliver 2
Nekonyancer[blue]Hmm... Merchant or Noble?[/blue] Well, there aren't many buildings on the board yet, so the Noble won't do us much good at this point. *Select the [red]Merchant.[/red] Click on [blue]"Deliver to Merchant 4"[/blue] at the top!*1rog_card-166699bb8ba69e510customActions 2 rog_card-16 1
Nekonyancer*Great!* We gained more influence in Region 4 by playing that card. If you scroll down, you'll find the Merchant in our [red]*"delivered" area,*[/red] under the main board.1turn_counter_wrapper6699bb8fc1cb900rog_player_delivered-92143487 6
Nekonyancer[blue]So what does the Merchant do, anyway?[/blue] Well, whenever one of our ships reaches the end of the river, it [blue]*"completes a journey."*[/blue] It will appear back at the top of the river again, and we will get a bonus: 3 Koku or 1 Trade Good. At that time, we can also trigger bonuses from all our played merchants! [green]We'll see this in action later.[/green]2rog_complete_journey6699bb8fc1cb900rog_complete_journey 2
NekonyancerThere's one more thing we have to do. Any time we play a customer card, we have to replace it by drawing 2 cards and discarding 1. *Click on [blue]"Refill hand"[/blue] at the top! Then [blue]confirm![/blue]*3btnBonus_0_296699bb8fc1cb910btnBonus_0_29 2
Nekonyancer[green]We drew two Elders.[/green] Darn. Elders do not have immediate or ongoing benefits, so they are best played near the end of the game. *Select the one on the [red]left.[/red] [blue]Discard[/blue] it.*1rog_card-76699bbaa6a6fb10btnConfirm 2 rog_card-7 1
NekonyancerAlright, you've seen artisans, merchants, nobles, and elders now. There's one more kind of customer card: *monks.* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edc1179330.87096085.jpg[/img] They allow players to hold more Divine Favor at once. They also let players place additional discs on buildings (even those belonging to other players), allowing them to reap more Owner rewards.1maintitlebar_content6699bbb2aab8d00
NekonyancerNext, let's learn about *Mastery goals.* 3 Mastery goals will be revealed at the beginning of each game. In 2-player games, the *first* player to accomplish a Mastery goal will gain the points indicated! In games with more players, each goal can be completed by two players, though the first will get more points.1rog_tile-86699bbe4adcc900
NekonyancerThe [red]*first mastery*[/red] is pretty simple. We need three different customers. The [blue]*second*[/blue] requires us to reach the half-way point on any influence track. We're pretty close in Region 4! [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edc0ce3179.45349261.jpg[/img]3rog_tile-76699bbe4adcc900rog_tile-7 1 rog_tile-8 2
NekonyancerThe [green]*third Mastery goal*[/green] requires us to have one of each kind of building. I mentioned building types earlier, but didn't provide many details. - Manors generally grant Influence. - Markets generally grant Trade Goods. - Ports generally grant Koku. - Shrines generally grant Victory Points.4rog_tile-126699bbe4adcc900rog_tile-12 3
NekonyancerLet's make some progress on this Mastery. *Click on [blue]Build[/blue] at the top!*5rog_tile-126699bbe4adcc910btnBuild 2
NekonyancerIt would be nice to take the building on the left, as it grants 1 free Divine Favor, but we already have a market. *Select the [red]Shrine.[/red]* If you scroll down, you'll see that there's only one valid build location, given our die and current finances. *Place the building. Click on [blue]"Select and pay 6 Koku."[/blue]*1turn_counter_wrapper6699bc4f6b71110btnTile_36 1
Nekonyancer[red]Next turn![/red] I want to build more buildings, but we'll need more Koku for that. If we Sail and complete a journey, we can trigger our Merchant and end up swimming in Koku! *Click on [blue]Sail[/blue] at the top!*1btnSail6699bca7ce9f710btnSail 2
Nekonyancer*Select the ship that's further down the river.* We rolled a 6, and there aren't that many spaces left on the board. When ships complete their journeys, they move to the top of the river and use their remaining movement. *Scroll up and select the Purple destination. Click on [blue]"Sail to river space #2"[/blue]*1turn_counter_wrapper6699bcad703a210btnConfirm 2
Nekonyancer*Great!* We acquired rewards from the buildings here: 5 Koku and 2 Influence in Region 1. Next, *click [blue]here[/blue] to trigger our bonus for completing a journey.*1btnBonus_0_276699bcc2de27110btnBonus_0_27 2
NekonyancerAs I mentioned before, the bonus for completing a journey is either 3 Koku or 1 Trade Good. *Click [blue]here[/blue] to take 1 Rice!*1btnBonus_36699bcd6924a310btnBonus_3 2
NekonyancerNext, let's trigger our Merchant's ability. We can sell Trade Goods for 5 Koku each! *Click on [blue]"Sell goods!"[/blue]*1btnBonus_0_286699bcd9a0a6f10btnBonus_0_28 2
Nekonyancer*Click [blue]here[/blue] to sell 1 Porcelain!*1btnTrade_2_66699bcde816cb10btnTrade_2_6 2
Nekonyancer*Sell another one!*1btnTrade_2_66699bce5a835d10btnTrade_2_6 2
Nekonyancer*And another one!*1btnTrade_2_66699bce9f371710btnTrade_2_6 2
Nekonyancer21/25 Koku! I think that's enough for now. We can build some particularly expensive buildings to carry us through the game! *Click on [blue]End selling.[/blue]*1btnEnd6699bcee0ff5d10btnEnd 2
NekonyancerAt this point, you might be wondering why we would bother building expensive buildings. Why not cheap ones? Because the more expensive spots can be accessed from more river spaces. I'll show you an example...1maintitlebar_content6699bcf50a0f000
NekonyancerThe 6-Koku building in this example can only be accessed from 1 space. The 11-Koku building can be accessed from 3 spaces! [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edc136e050.71251041.jpg[/img] [green]More access means more visitors, which means more owner rewards![/green]2maintitlebar_content6699bcf50a0f000
Nekonyancer[green]Okay, I think you got the hang of the game![/green] There's just one more thing I want to show you before you go: *trading.* Trading is a *free action* that we can perform at any time during our turn. It's not very efficient, so we shouldn't do it often, but let's do it now anyway, just so you can see how it works. *Click on [blue]Trade![/blue]*1btnTrade6699bd35d4fa410btnTrade 2
NekonyancerYou should be able to see our Trade options at the top now. [blue]We can trade...[/blue] - 5 Koku to gain 1 Divine Favor. - 2 of any Trade Good to gain 1 of another Trade Good. [green]This can do this as much as we want![/green]1maintitlebar_content6699bd439d2f700
NekonyancerAgain, this is not a good move. *Click [blue]here[/blue] to trade 2 Silk for 1 Porcelain.*2btnTrade_1_26699bd439d2f710btnTrade_1_2 2
Nekonyancer[green]Okay, you've seen just about everything![/green] Eventually, this stack of building tiles will run out, marking the end of *Era 1.* At that point, the emperor will tour through the river to assess the prosperity of his empire, triggering *Owner rewards* for *every building* on the river.1rog_deck_size-16699bd6994d1e00
NekonyancerAfter that, building tiles will be drawn from the *Era 2 stack.* When the last Era 2 building is moved to the Building Queue, the end of the game is triggered! The player who triggers the end immediately gains [green]5 points.[/green] All other players get 1 more turn. [red]Then the game ends![/red]2rog_tile-516699bd6994d1e00
Nekonyancer[blue]Each player's final score is comprised of...[/blue] • Points they gained throughout the game. • Points from completing Mastery goals. • Points from having the most Influence on various tracks. • *2/5/9/14/20/27* points for playing *1/2/3/4/5/6* customer cards. • Points from each customer's endgame scoring condition. [green]Whoever has the most points wins![/green] Tiebreaker: leftover Divine Favor.3turn_counter_wrapper6699bd6994d1e00
NekonyancerOnce you have a little more experience with the game, you might want to try toggling the *Clan Patrons mini expansion* in the lobby options! With this option engaged, each player gets a *patron card* with unique abilities! [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edc0e9f3e7.59722666.jpg[/img]4turn_counter_wrapper6699bd6994d1e00
NekonyancerThere are two different Patron setups: *Draft:* One of each clan's two possible patrons is revealed. In turn order, each player will choose a patron and their respective clan. *Alternative:* Each player is dealt a random clan. They can then choose one of their clan's two patrons.5turn_counter_wrapper6699bd6994d1e00
