Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edfe99e6e9.06287444.jpg[/img] Nothing beats a relaxing walk in the woods! But make sure you return home before the storm hits! [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerIn *Refuge,* each player will simultaneously draw tiles from their bag to form a path. Most tiles grant *victory points*🧡 or *steps🥾,* which are used to buy new tiles. [green]After five walks (rounds), whoever has the most points wins![/green]2maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerAt the beginning of each turn, each player must simultaneously decide if they will *draw tiles* to continue their walk or *return* to the refuge, ending their participation in the round. Well, the round just started, so we obviously don't want to return yet! *Click on [blue]"Draw tiles"[/blue] at the top!*3actDrawTiles-button010actDrawTiles-button 2
NekonyancerUnsurprisingly, our opponent also chose to draw tiles. Next, we need to find our path. There are several tabs on the left side of the screen. *Click on the tab with [blue]your name.[/blue] Then continue.*1pagemaintitletext672d52d3054d700
Nekonyancer[red]Here are the tiles we drew![/red] Oh, are the tabs blocking the tiles? You can brush them aside by clicking on the *⇔ button.*2player-table-11941354-hand672d52d3054d700player-table-11941354-hand 1
NekonyancerNext, each player must choose one of their drawn tiles to play! Each tile has some icons along the bottom that indicate what it does. You can [green]hover over them[/green] for details.3player-table-11941354-hand672d52d3054d700
NekonyancerThe *Small Orientation Table* (on the right) provides a lot more, doesn't it? We should pick that one. *Click on the tile on the right!*4tile-12-front672d52d3054d710
NekonyancerThe tile we played lets us choose between 3🧡 (victory points) and 3🥾. Again, 🥾 are used to buy new tiles. [blue]*Click on "3🥾!"*[/blue]1actChooseTileEffect1-button672d52da2918410actChooseTileEffect1-button 2
Nekonyancer*Good!* You should be able to see our total 🧡 and 🥾 [red]*here.*[/red] [green]We have 5🥾 because each player started the game with 2🥾![/green]1player-table-11941354-steps-counter672d52e0f273b00player-table-11941354-score-counter 1 player-table-11941354-steps-counter 1
NekonyancerNote that the tile we played was *flipped over* to reveal part of a peaceful forest. All our flipped tiles will make up our *path* for the round.2tile-12-back672d52e0f273b00
NekonyancerNext, each player can *buy a new tile.* This is the only step that is *not* done simultaneously. Whoever has the fewest 🧡 can go first. If there's a tie, whoever has the fewest 🥾 can go.3route672d52e0f273b00
NekonyancerLooks like our opponent gained 2🧡 from their tile. That means we have fewer🧡 and can buy a tile first!4player-table-92143487-score-counter672d52e0f273b00
NekonyancerThere are *eight* stacks of tiles in the supply. Generally, the top four stacks will help you get more🥾. The bottom four will help you get more 🧡. All the tiles in each stack are the same. The number at the bottom of each stack shows how many tiles are left.5tile-51-front672d52e0f273b00
NekonyancerAgain, you can hover over each tile to see what they do. Their costs are always indicated in the top-left corner. Hmm... I think we should spend all our 🥾 on a *map.* *Click on the rightmost tile!*6tile-51-front672d52e0f273b10
NekonyancerOkay, each player bought a new tile. Next, BGA will check the *weather* by drawing a tile from the *Weather Deck.* You can't see it, but it's made up of four *suns* and four *storms.* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edfec22e38.81110488.jpg[/img]1maintitlebar_content672d52e789ba000
Nekonyancer*Scroll up* or click on the *"Map"* tab so you can see the main board. If BGA draws a [blue]*storm,*[/blue] it will be placed [blue]*here.*[/blue] If it draws a [red]*sun,*[/red] it will be placed [red]*here.*[/red]2storms672d52e789ba000storms 2 suns 1
Nekonyancer[green]It's important to keep track of these tiles![/green] When the [blue]*6th storm tile*[/blue] is placed on the board (7th in a 3-player game, 9th in a 4-player game), a *storm* will hit, and any player that has not returned to the refuge will get caught in it! [blue]Now then, let's see what BGA draws... [/blue]3storms672d52e789ba000storms 2
Nekonyancer[red]It drew a sun![/red] What a great day! :D4tile-26-front672d52e78b80700player-table-11941354-bag-counter 2
NekonyancerBy the way, did you notice anything strange about what I said earlier? A storm will hit when *6* storm tiles are drawn, but there are only *4* in the weather deck. Well, there are also *2* storm tiles in each player's *bag.* [red]When they're drawn, they are automatically placed on the board![/red]5storms672d52e78b80700
NekonyancerSpeaking of *bags,* the new map tile that we bought went into ours. Remember the second tile that we drew and didn't play? It went back in too.6storms672d52e78b80700
Nekonyancer[blue]And that brings us to the end of the first turn![/blue] Here's a quick *recap* of the steps we went through: *1.* Decide whether to *draw tiles* or *return.* *2. Play* 1 tile. *3. Buy* 1 tile. *4.* BGA checks the *weather.* [green]Pretty simple, right? You might say it's a walk in the park! Or the woods, in this case.[/green] :)7maintitlebar_content672d52e78b80700
NekonyancerLet's start the next turn! [blue]*Draw tiles!*[/blue]8actDrawTiles-button672d52e78b80710actDrawTiles-button 2
Nekonyancer*Scroll down* or use the *tabs* to get back to our *path.* Looks like we drew a [blue]*storm tile!*[/blue] And if you scroll down further, you'll see that our [red]*opponent*[/red] did too!1player_name_11941354672d52f079e3c00player-table-11941354-hand 2 player-table-92143487-hand 1
NekonyancerIn this case, we won't get to *choose* a tile to play. The storm tile will be placed on the board, and we'll automatically play the other card. [red][tip] If we were unlucky enough to draw *both* storm tiles at once, we wouldn't get to play anything at all![/red]2player-table-11941354-hand672d52f079e3c00
NekonyancerThe playable tile we drew grants 2🧡. It also has something in the bottom-right corner, indicating an icon on the *other side* of the tile.3tile-14-front672d52f079e3c00
Nekonyancer*It's a bear track!* If we *return* to our refuge, we will gain 🧡 from each bear track in our path. If we don't return, and get caught in the storm instead, we won't get anything from them!4tile-14-back672d52f07b3bc00
NekonyancerNext, each player would normally get to buy a tile, but no one has any 🥾 to spend, so BGA will skip ahead and check the weather.5tile-55-front672d52f07b3bc00
NekonyancerIf you *scroll up,* you'll see that BGA drew a [blue]*storm tile!*[/blue] Yikes, the storm made it halfway here in only one turn! But that probably won't happen again. There's only *1* more storm tile in each player's bag, and *3* more (out of a remaining 6) in the weather deck.6tile-25-front672d52f07e91b00storms 2
NekonyancerLet's keep going! [blue]*Draw tiles!*[/blue]7actDrawTiles-button672d52f07e91b10actDrawTiles-button 2
NekonyancerGo back to our *path.* We drew the map that we bought two turns ago. That's great! *Play it!* (It's the card on the right.)1pagemaintitletext672d5303bf8f910
NekonyancerAs you've probably already read, the *map* lets us play two additional tiles, but that's a little vague. [blue]We can either...[/blue] • Play our other drawn tile, then draw and play one more. *OR* • Draw and play two tiles from our bag, ignoring the one we already drew.1tile-48-back672d530b49b7f00
NekonyancerOur other drawn tile isn't very good, so let's play two tiles from the bag. [blue]*Click here!*[/blue]2actTileEffectPlayFromBag-button672d530b49b7f10actTileEffectPlayFromBag-button 2
NekonyancerOur Map drew two more signs, giving us 1🥾 each. Time to buy a tile! We could buy a *Cairn,* which will let us *permanently discard* a tile in our path, but I'd rather save up for the *Hiking Poles,* which will synergize with the map we bought. *Click on [blue]"Don't buy tile"[/blue] at the top.*1tile-39-front672d53200b5f510actPassBuyTile-button 2
NekonyancerNext turn. We can walk a little farther... right? [blue]*Draw tiles!*[/blue]1actDrawTiles-button672d532792ca910actDrawTiles-button 2
Nekonyancer*Play the tile on the right!*1tile-19-front672d532c3278810
Nekonyancer*Buy a pair of Hiking Poles!*1tile-43-front672d53436815b10
NekonyancerIt's getting a little risky to keep going, so let me give you a few more details about *returning* to the refuge and *getting caught* in the storm. [blue]If we return:[/blue] • We will gain 1🧡 per bear track in our path. • We can *permanently discard* one tile in our path. • We will *skip* all our turns for the remainder of the round. !!! The round will end when the storm hits *OR* everyone chooses to return to the refuge.1tile-13-back672d5354a902e00
Nekonyancer[blue]If we get caught:[/blue] • We will pay 1🥾 per forest tile in our path. • If we run out of 🥾, we'll pay 🧡 instead.2tile-13-back672d5354a902e00
NekonyancerTake a moment to analyze the cost and risk. [blue]Do you think we should we return or continue our walk?[/blue]3player-table-11941354-steps-counter672d5354a902e00
NekonyancerIf we get caught, it won't be that bad. We don't have that many points to lose, and there's only one point to be gained by returning. Besides, we have *Hiking Poles* in our bag! If we draw them now, we'll gain 6🥾! I think that's worth the risk! [blue]*Draw tiles!*[/blue]4player-table-11941354-score-counter672d5354a902e10actDrawTiles-button 2
Nekonyancer*YES!* We drew the poles! *Play them!*1tile-40-front672d535a8890310
NekonyancerLet's buy a Big Lake for 6🥾! It's worth 5🧡 when played! *Click here!* (The second stack in the second row.)1tile-59-front672d53835c9d910
Nekonyancer*Uh oh!* BGA drew the 6th storm tile, so we got caught in the storm! We had to run home, paying 1🥾 for each forested tile in our path and 1🧡 each when we ran out of 🥾.1maintitlebar_content672d5399f408200
NekonyancerIt would have been nice to permanently discard a tile by returning early, but I think we made the right call. We didn't lose that many points, and that *Big Lake* we bought is a big deal!2maintitlebar_content672d5399f408200
NekonyancerThe arrival of the storm marked the *end of the round.* All the tiles in each player's path (and their storm tiles on the board) were returned to their bags. BGA reset the Weather Deck.3maintitlebar_content672d5399f408200
Nekonyancer[green]Now we're ready for Round 2![/green] If you forget which round we're in, just count the [blue]*sheep*[/blue] in the pasture! Don't fall asleep though!4round-markers672d5399f408200round-markers 2
NekonyancerYou're almost ready to try a game for yourself, but there are a few final things I need to mention. *1.* Some tiles (like Toasted Marshmallows and Suspension Bridge) have "!" on them. [red]"!" tiles *must* be played when drawn![/red]6tile-47-front672d5399f408200
Nekonyancer*2.* If you hover over the tiles in the second row, you'll see that none of them have forests on them. Remember, when you get caught in a storm, you only pay for *forested* tiles in your path.7tile-63-front672d5399f408200
Nekonyancer*3.* You might encounter different tiles when you play! By default, BGA will randomly choose one of three recommended sets of tiles. If you like, you can choose one of the sets in the *lobby options,* or even make your own set! [green][tip] This particular set of tiles is called "Climbing in the Mountains!"[/green] 8tile-47-front672d5399f408200
NekonyancerOkay, that's everything! Again, the game will last *five rounds.* [green]At the end, whoever has the most points wins![/green]9maintitlebar_content672d5399f408200
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Refuge!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! Big thank yous go out to... • *Gérard Cattiaux* for designing this game. • *Bombyx* for publishing. • *thoun* for bringing it to BGA. Have fun! :D10maintitlebar_content672d5399f408200
