Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img691d4b8e6d0da1.99499834.jpg[/img] You are the head of a Greek family exerting political influence across the six main cities of Greece! You must gain power in as many cities as possible and then lead their armies to glory! [green][tip] This 77-step tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerIn *Perikles,* players will take turns selecting [red]*influence tiles,*[/red] which allow them to place influence cubes into the six cities. When each player has chosen *5* tiles, players will propose candidates in each city. The candidate with the most influence in each city is elected!2athens_22000corinth_35 6 corinth_23 6 sparta_11 6 athens_15 6 athens_33 6 athens_7 6 argos_4 6 argos_3 6 athens_22 6 thebes_12 6
NekonyancerIf a player's candidate is elected, they gain control of that city's *army.* Players will then send their cities' armies to war against each other to earn victory points. After 3 rounds (or when Athens or Sparta has been defeated 4 times), [green]whoever has the most points wins![/green]3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
NekonyancerAs you can see, each player starts with 2 [blue]*influence cubes*[/blue] in each city. At the beginning of the game, each player gets to place 2 more cubes, one at a time, in any city they like.411941354_thebes_100092143487_thebes_0 2 92143487_thebes_1 2 11941354_thebes_0 2 11941354_thebes_1 2 92146574_thebes_0 2 92146574_thebes_1 2
NekonyancerWe're up first. We'll place a cube in *Athens.* *Click on [red]our column[/red] to place a cube!* ... It didn't work, did it? Well, don't worry. It will work when you play a real game! Click on *"Continue"* instead.5athens_cubes_92143487000athens_cubes_92143487 1
NekonyancerAlright, now it's the next player's turn to place a cube...1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment653b02f874a2b00
NekonyancerNow we can place our second cube. Let's go with *Megara.* *Click on [red]our column[/red] in Megara to add a cube!*1megara653b033e3babd10megara_cubes_92143487 1
NekonyancerNow we're ready to start Round 1! [blue]Each round is split into 4 Phases:[/blue] *- Select influence tiles.* *- Propose candidates.* *- Commit military forces.* *- Resolve battles.* There are actually some other set-up phases too, but BGA will take care of them for us. :)1maintitlebar_content653b035a2977700
Nekonyancer[blue]*Phase 1: Select Influence Tiles*[/blue]---In this phase, players will take turns taking [red]*Influence Tiles*[/red] from the board. These tiles let us place more cubes into cities, depending on how many *pottery shards* are on the tile.2athens_22653b035a2977700corinth_35 6 corinth_23 6 sparta_11 6 athens_15 6 athens_33 6 athens_7 6 argos_4 6 argos_3 6 athens_22 6 thebes_12 6
NekonyancerLet's start with this one. It says *Athens,* and it has two shards on it, so if we take it, we'll place two cubes in Athens! [red]*Click on it!*[/red] [green](Step 10/77)[/green]3athens_15653b035a2977710athens_15 6
Nekonyancer*Good!* Three quick things to note: *1.* We put two more cubes in [red]*Athens.*[/red] *2.* The tile is now in our [blue]*inventory.*[/blue] *3.* [green]*Another tile*[/green] was drawn to replace the one we took. Now the next player will take a tile!1athens_cubes_92143487653b0372699e500corinth_13 8 athens_cubes_92143487 1 athens_15 7
NekonyancerNext turn! We have to take another tile, but each player is only allowed to have *1 tile per city.* In other words, since we already have a tile from Athens, we can't take another Athens tile. Let's take this [red]*one.*[/red] It has a *candidate* on it, in addition to one shard. If we take it, we can nominate a cube in a city as a *candidate.* [red]*Click on it!*[/red] ... Darn, it didn't work. Click on *"Continue"* instead.1thebes_12653b03932dd9d00athens_33 13 athens_7 13 athens_22 13 thebes_12 6
NekonyancerSince the tile says Thebes on it, we placed one more cube in Thebes. But the candidate we nominate can be in *any city* (and can belong to any player)! *Click on [blue]this cube[/blue] to nominate it as Athens's leader!*1athens_cubes_92143487653b03a383ebc1092143487_athens_0 2
Nekonyancer*Good!* This was the first nomination in Athens, so our cube took the *α* (alpha) spot. Later on, the candidate with the most supporting cubes will become the leader of the city. If there's a tie, *α* wins over *β.*192143487_athens_a653b03a97adf000
Nekonyancer[red]*This tile*[/red] has a bloody sword on it. If we take it, we can immediately remove one cube from any city, including candidates! [red]*Click on it!*[/red]1argos_4653b04701622210argos_4 6
NekonyancerOur opponent nominated one of their own cubes in Athens last turn. How nice. Competition is a vital pillar of Athenian democracy, wouldn't you agree? As a show of good faith, we should wish our opponent luck in the upcoming election. *Click on the opponent's cube to wish them luck.*192146574_athens_b653b04802c1631092146574_athens_b 12
NekonyancerOh... they appear to have suffered an [red]"accident."[/red] How unfortunate. >:)1athens653b048331f4000
NekonyancerAlright, there's just one kind of tile you haven't seen yet - the [blue]*Any City*[/blue] tile. Any City tiles always feature a single pottery shard and nothing else. If you take it, you can place a cube anywhere, even if you've already taken a tile from that city.2any_6653b048331f4000any_6 7
NekonyancerThis phase will continue until each player has taken exactly *five* tiles. [green]I'll fast-forward to that point now.[/green]3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment653b048331f4000
NekonyancerEveryone has 5 tiles, so Phase 1 is over! [blue]*Phase 2: Nominate candidates*[/blue]---Players will now take turns nominating more candidates until every city has an *α* and a *β* candidate. [green](Step 20/77)[/green]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment653b057e5517f00
NekonyancerEarlier, I told you that the candidate with the most supporting cubes will be elected. [blue]There's one more important thing to consider:[/blue] after their political campaigns, both candidates for each city will be removed from the board, and the winning party will *lose support* equal to the number of cubes in the opposing party.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment653b057e5517f00
NekonyancerLooks like our candidate is already a shoo-in for office, but it will help us later if our opponent has as little support as possible. Therefore, it would be better if we ran against [blue]*Neko4*[/blue] instead of [green]*Nekonyancer.*[/green] *Click on [blue]Neko4's cube[/blue] to nominate it!*392146574_athens_1653b057e5517f1092146574_athens_1 2
NekonyancerGood! Now the next player will nominate a cube...1athens653b059a34f2200
NekonyancerNext turn! No one has been nominated in *Thebes* yet. We have more cubes than both of our opponents here, but that won't do us any good unless we get nominated! *Nominate [red]this cube![/red]*1thebes653b05b4e53ae1092143487_thebes_0 1
Nekonyancer*Good!* This process will continue until there are two candidates for every city. [green]I'll fast-forward to that point now.[/green]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment653b05bf74ae300
Nekonyancer*Okay, all the elections were resolved!* All candidate cubes were removed from the board. Each winning party [red]lost support[/red] equal to the support of the opposing party.1athens653b0660f24c900
NekonyancerFor example, we won in *Athens.* A [red]*red Player Tile*[/red] was placed here to mark our victory. We had 5 supporting cubes and our opposing party had 2 supporting cubes. We lost 2 cubes, bringing us down to 3.2athens_leader_0653b0660f24c900athens_leader 1
NekonyancerThe winner of each city then took control of that city's *army.* We won elections in *Athens* and *Thebes,* so their armies are now shown at the top of our screen. [blue]You may have to scroll down to find the next box.[/blue]3mymilitary653b0660f24c900
NekonyancerIf a player failed to win any of the cities, they would get to use the [red]*Persian army*[/red] for one round.4persia_hoplite_3_67653b0660f24c900persia_hoplite_3_67 1 persia_trireme_3_71 1
NekonyancerAs you can see, there are two types of military units: [green]*hoplites*[/green] and [blue]*triremes.*[/blue] The number on each unit represents their [red]combat strength.[/red] [blue]You may have to scroll down to find the next box.[/blue] [green](Step 30/77)[/green]6thebes_hoplite_3_54653b0660f24c900athens_hoplite_1_2 3 athens_hoplite_2_4 3 athens_hoplite_3_6 3 athens_trireme_1_8 2 athens_trireme_2_10 2 athens_trireme_3_12 2 athens_trireme_4_14 2 thebes_hoplite_1_49 3 thebes_hoplite_2_52 3 thebes_hoplite_3_54 3 thebes_trireme_1_55 2 thebes_trireme_2_56 2
Nekonyancer[blue]*Phase 3: Commit Forces*[/blue]---Players will now take turns committing their forces to *attack* or *defend* the [red]*7 locations*[/red] in the bottom-right corner of the board, starting with whoever won the election in *Sparta.*7megarabattle_tile653b0660f24c900megarabattle_tile 6 melos_tile 6 cephallenia_tile 6 attica_tile 6 delium_tile 6 potidea_tile 6 acarnania_tile 6
NekonyancerEach location tile has four important bits of info: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed4625f3e8.08411437.jpg[/img] [red]Battle order.[/red] [blue]Victory point value.[/blue] [green]Associated city.[/green] *Bonuses.*9melos_tile653b0660f24c900
NekonyancerFor example, Melos will have a [red]Hoplite battle, then a Trireme battle.[/red] It's worth [blue]3 points.[/blue] It's associated with [green]Sparta.[/green] The defender's hoplites and triremes will get a *+1 strength bonus.* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed46592795.85202814.jpg[/img] [tip] You can see all the details if you hover over the tile with your mouse!10melos_tile653b0660f24c900
NekonyancerYou'll see how battles work later. For now, all you need to know is that whichever side wins the first battle gains an advantage for the second battle. The winner of the *second* battle will claim the *Location Tile,* earning [green]victory points.[/green]11melos_tile653b0660f24c900
Nekonyancer[green]*Nekonyancer*[/green] won Sparta's election, so they will go first. They must discard an *influence tile with 2 pottery shards* from their inventory and then commit up to *two military units.* Players will take turns doing this until everyone runs out of tiles of 2 shards. Then the process repeats for tiles with 1 shard.12archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment653b0660f24c900
Nekonyancer[green]*Nekonyancer*[/green] placed two Triremes on a slot to the left of Delium. Slots to the left are for [red]attacking[/red] armies. Slots to the right, of course, are for [blue]defending[/blue] armies. Since they were the first to commit triremes here, they are now the [red]Main Attacker[/red] for Delium's trireme battle.1sparta_trireme_0_0_delium653b07365a9e500
NekonyancerIf we *hover* over the stack of triremes with our mouse, BGA will show us how many units are in the stack. But we can't see how much strength each unit has! Next, [blue]*Neko4*[/blue] will commit forces...2sparta_trireme_0_0_delium653b07365a9e500
Nekonyancer[blue]*Neko4*[/blue] chose two commit two hoplites - one to [red]*Attica,*[/red] one to [green]*Potidea.*[/green] They are now the Main Attacker for both hoplite battles. Now it's our turn!1battle_4_trireme_def653b367664f2f00attica_tile 6 potidea_tile 8
NekonyancerI mentioned earlier that we have to discard an Influence Tile, but don't worry about that. BGA will automatically do it for us. [blue]We just have to choose which units to commit and where they will go.[/blue] *Start by clicking on this 3-strength Athenian Hoplite. Then continue to the next box.*2athens_hoplite_3_6653b367664f2f00athens_hoplite_3_6 16
Nekonyancer[green]A big box should have popped up, showing our selected unit and the seven locations.[/green] If we click on a *sword,* our unit will be assigned to that location as an *attacker.* Note that there are *no swords* next to Athenian and Theban locations. This is because we control Athens and Thebes. [blue]It wouldn't make sense for our Athenian hoplite to attack an Athenian location![/blue] And since Athens and Thebes are allied under our command, we can't send this unit to attack a Theban location either! [green](Step 40/77)[/green]3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment653b367664f2f00
NekonyancerIf we click on a *shield,* our unit will be assigned to that location as a *defender.* *White shields* indicate locations that belong to us. *Golden shields* belong to opponents. We can only defend locations that belong to opponents if they give us *permission* to do so.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment653b367664f2f00
NekonyancerI'll show you how to get permission later. For now, *1.* Click on the *sword* next to Megara. *2.* Click on the *"Send"* button. *3. Continue* to the next box.5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment653b367664f2f00
NekonyancerOkay, we've assigned one unit! We can assign *two* units each turn. *Assign another 3-strength Athenian hoplite to Megara as an attacker. Then click on "Commit Forces!"*6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment653b367664f2f10
Nekonyancer*Great!* We are now the [red]Main Attacker[/red] for the hoplite battle at Megara! Now that we're *attacking* this location, we can no longer *defend* this location, even if we get permission. That would be silly. xD1megarabattle_tile653b36cb7904600
NekonyancerNow, if you zoom out a little bit, you'll see some colorful *charts* that show who's at war with who. Since we sent Athenian troops to attack Megara, this location is now [red]*at war*[/red] with Athens. To show this, the Athens button turned [red]*red.*[/red] There is no button for Sparta here because Sparta and Megara are controlled by the same player: [green]*Nekonyancer.*[/green]2megarabattle_permissions_wrapper653b36cb7904600megarabattle_permissions 12
NekonyancerLet's use Attica as another example. Attica belongs to Athens, which we currently control. We also control Thebes, so there is no Thebes button displayed for this location. [blue]*Neko4*[/blue] sent an Argosian hoplite unit to attack Attica, so Athens and Argos are now [red]*at war.*[/red]3attica_permissions_wrapper653b36cb7904600
NekonyancerSince Argos and Athens are at war, we cannot give Argos's controller permission to defend Attica. But since Attica is *neutral* with Sparta and Corinth, we can give their controllers permission by clicking on the corresponding buttons. [blue]Wait a second. It shows that Attica is at war with Megara, but why? Megara didn't attack them.[/blue]4attica_permissions_wrapper653b36cb7904600
NekonyancerOh! It's because we sent Athenian hoplites to attack Megara! [red]If two cities are at war in one location, they are at war in all locations![/red]5megarabattle_tile653b36cb7904600
NekonyancerThis rule has many ramifications. For example, Spartan troops were sent to attack this [green]*Theban location,*[/green] making Sparta and Thebes at war. Because of that, Theban troops can no longer be deployed to defend [blue]*Spartan locations!*[/blue]6battle_5_hoplite_def653b36cb7904600melos_tile 7 cephallenia_tile 7 delium_tile 8
Nekonyancer[red]In addition, cities that are at war can never team up against another city.[/red] For example, since Argos and Athens are currently at war, it would be impossible for Argosian and Athenian troops to *BOTH* attack a Spartan location. Whichever city was assigned to attack first would negate the other one from joining the attack. [green](Step 50/77)[/green]7battle_5_hoplite_def653b36cb7904600
NekonyancerNext, let's try [green]defending locations.[/green] *Select this 3-strength Theban hoplite. Then continue to the next box.*1thebes_hoplite_3_54653b3dc87821a00thebes_hoplite_3_54 16
NekonyancerThe shield next to Megara is gone. This is because we already sent *Athenian* troops to *attack* Megara. We cannot send other troops - Athenian or otherwise - to *defend* the same location. The two Spartan locations (pink) still have golden shields - meaning we can defend them if we get permission - but since Thebes and Sparta are at war already, their controller *can't* give us permission.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment653b3dc87821a00
Nekonyancer*Assign this Theban hoplite to Potidea as a defender.* (Second from the bottom!) *Then continue to the next box.*3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment653b3dc87821a00
NekonyancerGood! *Next, select another 3-strength Theban hoplite. Send it to defend Acarnania!* (The bottom location!) Finally, *click on "Commit Forces!"*4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment653b3dc87821a10thebes_hoplite_3_53 16
NekonyancerGood! If you scroll down, you'll see that our [red]*Theban hoplites*[/red] have been committed. I think you got the hang of it. This phase will continue as you've seen until players run out of *Influence Tiles* to discard. That means each player will get *five* deployments, each time committing up to two units. [green]I'll fast-forward a bit now...[/green]5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment653b3dfd427b401thebes_hoplite_3_54 1 thebes_hoplite_3_53 1
NekonyancerOkay, everyone's finished committing troops! [blue]*Phase 4: Resolve battles*[/blue]---This is the fun part! Battles will be resolved from top to bottom, so Megara is first. !!! From this point onward, do not use the minimize button in the top-right corner of this box. The tutorial will softlock!1megarabattle_tile653eec614842900
Nekonyancer[blue]*Four victory counters*[/blue] were placed here. BGA will now roll two dice for the attackers and two dice for the defenders. Whenever a side rolls high enough, they can take one of the victory counters. The number each side must roll is determined by their combat strength. [red]The first side to get 2 counters wins the battle![/red]2battle_token_1653eec614842900battle_token_0 2 battle_token_1 2 battle_token_3 2
NekonyancerRemember, Megara will have a *Trireme battle* first, followed by a *Hoplite battle.* It looks like the attacking triremes have *11 total combat strength.* Yikes. The defending trireme has *2* strength.3megarabattle_tile653eec614842900
NekonyancerNext, scroll up to look at the [red]*Combat Table.*[/red] There are six columns in the table, each corresponding to a different strength ratio. Since the attackers are more than *3 times stronger* than the defenders, this battle will use the 3:1 column.4crt_6653eec614842900
Nekonyancer*According to the 3:1 column...* - [red]Attackers[/red] must roll 5 or higher to gain a victory counter. - [blue]Defenders[/blue] must roll 10 or higher to gain a victory counter. Yikes. This will be a slaughter. Scroll down to look at at the dice before you continue. [green](Step 60/77)[/green]5crt_6653eec614842900
NekonyancerBGA rolled all the dice! [red]Attackers rolled 7.[/red] [blue]Defenders rolled 8.[/blue] According to the Combat Table, the attackers will gain 1 Victory Counter.6athens_defeat_slot_3653eec614845800
NekonyancerBGA rolled the dice again! [red]Attackers rolled 6.[/red] [blue]Defenders rolled 10.[/blue] *Both sides* will gain a counter this time.7athens_defeat_slot_3653eec61485ad00
NekonyancerThe attackers gained [blue]*2 counters*[/blue] before the defenders did, so they win the battle! Whenever a battle is concluded, the weakest unit of the losing side's main force [red]dies.[/red] That means it will be removed from the game. In this case, the attackers won, so [green]*this Trireme*[/green] (the weakest unit in the Main Defender's force) will die.8megarabattle_tile653eec614869d00battle_token_3 2 battle_token_2 2 megara_trireme_2_60 8
NekonyancerOkay, time for the [red]second battle![/red] (Hoplites) Since the Attackers won the first battle, they'll start with [blue]*1 victory token!*[/blue]9megarabattle_tile653eec614a4f000battle_token_3 2
NekonyancerNext, all [blue]*leftover troops*[/blue] return to their respective cities. Heh, they're not even staying to watch the Hoplite battle.10megarabattle_tile653eec6149b0000athens_trireme_3_11 7 athens_trireme_3_12 7 corinth_trireme_2_46 7 corinth_trireme_3_47 7
NekonyancerThe [red]attacking[/red] hoplites have a strength of *6.* The [blue]defending[/blue] hoplites have a strength of *7.* That means we'll use the [red]*1:1*[/red] column of the Combat Table. Attackers need at least 8, defenders need at least 7.1megarabattle_tile653eeca3b185f00
NekonyancerBoth sides rolled a 7! The [blue]defenders[/blue] gain a victory counter!2athens_defeat_slot_3653eeca3b186a00
Nekonyancer[red]Attackers rolled 8.[/red] [blue]Defenders rolled 11.[/blue] Both sides get a token, so they both reach 2 counters at the same time! *It's a tie!* In this situation, both sides will continue rolling until one side fails to roll high enough.3athens_defeat_slot_3653eeca3b18dd00
NekonyancerDefenders rolled high enough. Attackers did not. [blue]That means the defenders win this fight![/blue] The weakest attacking unit in the Main Attacker's force will be removed from the game.4athens_defeat_slot_3653eeca3b19a500athens_hoplite_3_6 13
NekonyancerSince this is the last battle for this location, and the defenders won, the Main Defender [green]*(Nekonyancer)*[/green] will now claim the [blue]*Location Tile,*[/blue] worth 5 victory points! [green](Step 70/77)[/green]5megarabattle_tile653eeca3b1bbd00megarabattle_tile 7
NekonyancerFinally, all the [blue]*leftover troops*[/blue] will go home.6location_1653eeca3b248b00athens_hoplite_3_5 7 sparta_hoplite_3_22 7 sparta_hoplite_4_24 7
Nekonyancer*That's it for this battle!* The next battle, Melos, will carry on the same way, except for [blue]two important differences:[/blue] *1.* This time, the Hoplites will fight first. *2.* There's a *bonus* on this tile, granting +1 to the defenders' total strength in each battle.7melos_tile653eeca3b267600
NekonyancerSometimes, a city will end up with attackers but no defenders, or vice-versa. If there are [blue]no defenders,[/blue] the defenders have a strength of 0. The battle proceeds normally. If there are [red]no attackers,[/red] there is no battle. The Main Defender does not claim the Location Tile. However, they may add two influence cubes to the corresponding city.8delium_tile653eeca3b267600
NekonyancerWhen all the battles have been resolved, all the cities' leaders step down, and statues are erected in their honor. Each [blue]*Leader token*[/blue] is moved to the [red]*first empty space*[/red] in that city. They will be worth victory points at the end of the game!9archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment653eeca3b267600athens_leader_0 2 athens_defeat_slot_4 1 sparta_leader_0 7 argos_leader_0 2 argos_defeat_slot_2 1 corinth_leader_0 2 corinth_defeat_slot_4 1 thebes_leader_0 2 thebes_defeat_slot_3 1 megara_leader_0 2 megara_defeat_slot_2 1
Nekonyancer[blue]After that, a new round will start![/blue] After 3 rounds, the game ends, and player scores are calculated. !!! If either Sparta or Athens suffers 4 or more defeats, the game can end after only 2 rounds!10archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment653eeca3b267600
Nekonyancer[green]Players score...[/green] • 1 point per influence cube left in a city. • points from Location Tiles. • points from *Statues* (Leader tokens). Each Statue under a city is worth points equal to the highest uncovered number. If all the numbers are covered, the statues are worthless!11archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment653eeca3b267600
