Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edb5455190.41584968.jpg[/img] Every time you finish tastefully decorating your dungeon, some haughty adventurers come along to ransack it. Well, no more! To stop them, you've settled on a new decoration theme: their heads! [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerIn *Open Season,* each player will meticulously arrange a series of heads on their dungeon Wall to unlock abilities and develop a specific set of scoring criteria. At the same time, they will build a collection of Accolades, which will score points depending on those criteria. [green]After 11 rounds, each player's Wall will be complete. Whoever has the most points wins![/green]2maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerThis is [red]*the Inn.*[/red] At the beginning of each players turn, BGA will restock it so that there are exactly *five* cards available. [blue]The first thing we have to do on our turn is select two of them.[/blue]3innContainer000innContainer 6
NekonyancerEach card has... - A *race* (Elve, Mage, Sorcerer, Dwarf, Gnome, Barbarian). - An *attribute* (crown, tattoo, earrings, dagger, eyepatch). [blue]Let's start by taking the two mages.[/blue] *Select them in the specified order. Then [blue]confirm[/blue] your selection.*4opsCard_96010opsCard_96 17 opsCard_117 18
NekonyancerGood! Next, we must select one of the two cards to place on our *Wall.* The other one will automatically go into our [red]*Stock,*[/red] which is in the bottom-right corner of our Wall. You have might to scroll down a little to see it.1opsCard_117666a4fd14b80e00opsCard_117 2 boardStockZone_11941354 1
NekonyancerEach player's wall has *11 slots* on it, and each one does something different. The ones in the top row unlock special abilities that activate whenever a card of the *same race* is placed in our stock. *Select the Mage on the left. Place it [red]here.[/red] Then [blue]confirm[/blue] your selection!*2opsCard_117666a4fd14b80e10opsCard_117 16 boardCardZone_3_11941354 6
Nekonyancer*Excellent!* The other mage went into our stock, and since it's of the same race, it activated our new ability! This particular ability lets us draw the top 2 cards from the deck and add one to our stock! The other one must be put back on top of the deck.1opsCard_117666a4fd55b08c00
NekonyancerLet's see. We drew a Barbarian and a Sorcerer. Let's add the *Barbarian* to our stock. *Select it. Then [blue]confirm![/blue]*2opsCard_37666a4fd55b08c10opsCard_37 16
NekonyancerGood! The sorcerer went back on top of the deck. By the way, each ability can only be triggered *once per turn.* BGA slapped a [red]red X[/red] over the ability icon to show that it has already been used this turn.1opsCard_117666a4fdd1aff000actionZone_deck_11941354 6
NekonyancerOkay, that's it for our turn! That wasn't so hard, was it? [blue]Next, our opponent will take their turn![/blue]2maintitlebar_content666a4fdd1aff000
Nekonyancer[blue]Okay, it's our turn again![/blue] Before we do anything, take a look at our [red]*Stock.*[/red] It's *empty!* That's because BGA moved all the cards in our stock to another pile at the beginning of our turn. This pile is called our [blue]*Accolades.*[/blue]1boardStockZone_11941354666a4feedde4c00boardStockZone_11941354 1 palmaresCard_11941354 2
NekonyancerAll the cards in our [blue]*Accolades*[/blue] will score points for us at the end of the game, depending on how our Wall turns out.2palmaresCard_11941354666a4feedde4c00boardStockZone_11941354 1 actionZone_steal_11941354 6 palmaresCard_11941354 2
NekonyancerBy the way, there's a [red]*special ability*[/red] that allows players to steal cards from other players' Stocks. Cards in Accolades are safe though. [green]You can hover over the slot's icon to read more![/green]3boardCardZone_1_11941354666a4feedde4c00boardCardZone_1_11941354 6
NekonyancerThe cards in other players' Accolades are secret, but we can check the contents of our own Accolades any time with [blue]*this convenient chart.*[/blue] As you can see, we currently have one crowned mage and one earringed barbarian.4palmares_3_14_11941354666a4feedde4c00overall_player_board_11941354 2
Nekonyancer[blue]Let's focus on our next turn now.[/blue] Darn, there aren't any Mages in the Inn this time! If we want a good score, we need to trigger that ability as often as possible. Again, that requires putting cards of the *matching race* in our stock. [green]Don't worry. There's another way to do it.[/green]5opsCard_55666a4feedde4c00
Nekonyancer*First, take these two cards from the Inn in the indicated order.*6opsCard_55666a4feedde4c10opsCard_136 18 opsCard_55 17
NekonyancerNext, let's place a card on [red]*this space.*[/red] It won't give us an ability. Instead, it grants an instant benefit, depending on *when* we place a card here. 1st/2nd turn: 2 Trophy Tokens. 3rd/4th turn: 1 Wild Token. 5th/6th turn: 1 Trophy Token.1boardCardZone_6_11941354666a5008aab6500boardCardZone_6_11941354 6
NekonyancerTrophy Tokens are very useful, so let's do it! *Select [blue]this card.[/blue] Place it on [red]this space.[/red] [blue]Confirm.[/blue]*2opsCard_136666a5008aab6510opsCard_136 2 boardCardZone_6_11941354 6
Nekonyancer*Great!* We now have two Trophy Tokens in our [red]*inventory.*[/red] At the end of our turn, we have the option of playing one onto a card in our *top row* or *bottom row.*1opsToken_219666a500f323d000playerTrophyZone_11941354 1
NekonyancerIf we place a Trophy Token on a top row card, we can trigger that card's ability, provided it hasn't already been triggered this turn. Let's do it! *Click on [red]this card![/red] Then [blue]confirm![/blue]*2opsCard_117666a500f323d010opsCard_117 6
Nekonyancer[blue]Okay, the ability activated![/blue] If you scroll up, you'll see that we drew a *Mage* and a *Sorcerer.* Which one should we add to our stock?1opsCard_92666a5019cb35500
NekonyancerBefore we decide, I should explain a little more about that slot we filled. Do you see the [red]red trophy[/red] next to it? It indicates that each card of the *matching race* in our Accolades at the end of the game will be worth [red]-3 points![/red] Well, we definitely don't want to take the Sorcerer then! *Select the Mage. [blue]Confirm.*[/blue]2opsCard_136666a5019cb35510opsCard_92 16
Nekonyancer[blue]Round 3![/blue] We'll learn about the *bottom row* of our board this turn, which is how we'll earn the majority of our points. *First, select these two cards in the specified order.*1opsCard_122666a50359a3a010opsCard_91 17 opsCard_46 18
NekonyancerNext, take a look at [red]*this slot.*[/red] Do you see the yellow trophy with a 2 next to it? It indicates that each card in our Accolades of the same race as the card placed here will be worth [green]+2 points.[/green]1boardCardZone_10_11941354666a505ef01d400boardCardZone_10_11941354 1
NekonyancerAccording to our Accolades chart, we currently have 2 Mages and 2 Barbarians, so either card will be good in the aforementioned slot. Let's put our Mage there. *Select the Mage. Select [red]this slot.[/red] [blue]Confirm![/blue]*2opsCard_91666a505ef01d410opsCard_91 16 boardCardZone_10_11941354 6
Nekonyancer*Great!* We are now set to earn 4 points at the end of the game (2 for each Mage in our Accolades). [green]As we play on, we should try to collect as many Mages as we can![/green]1opsCard_91666a50656f6bf00
Nekonyancer[blue]Round 4![/blue] Let's unlock [red]*this ability.*[/red] When activated, it allows us to move one Trophy Token from a card in our *top* row to a card in our *bottom* row!1boardCardZone_2_11941354666a508c8dce200boardCardZone_2_11941354 6
NekonyancerThis will be our second ability, so there's a restriction we have to deal with, indicated by the gray frieze under the row: [red]every card in the row must be of a different race.[/red] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edb567ad01.06999733.jpg[/img] So, since we already used a mage to unlock our first ability, we can't use a wizard for our second.2boardCardZone_2_11941354666a508c8dce200
NekonyancerWell, there aren't any Mages in the Inn right now anyway. *Take the two dwarves in the indicated order. [blue]Confirm.[/blue]*3opsCard_171666a508c8dce210opsCard_171 17 opsCard_151 18
Nekonyancer*Select the dwarf on the left and place it [red]here.[/red]*1opsCard_151666a50a5280e210opsCard_151 16 boardCardZone_2_11941354 6
NekonyancerThe other Dwarf went into our stock, matching the Dwarf that we just put here, triggering the ability. Again, it lets us move a [red]trophy token[/red] from any card in our *top* row to any card in our *bottom* row.1opsCard_151666a50b5556cb00
NekonyancerLet's do it! *Select this token and move it [red]here. [/red][blue] Confirm![/blue]*2opsCard_117666a50b5556cb10opsGenTrophy_117 16 opsCard_91 6
NekonyancerGood! Each trophy token on a bottom row card will count as [blue]1 extra card in our accolades of that race.[/blue] We now effectively have 3 mages in our accolades. That's 6 points!1opsCard_91666a50bb3643b00
Nekonyancer[blue]Round 5![/blue] We'll fill another bottom row slot this turn. *Take the Mage and the Barbarian in the indicated order. [blue]Confirm.[/blue]*1opsCard_94666a50e1039b510opsCard_94 17 opsCard_57 18
NekonyancerNote that there's a *gray Frieze* in the bottom row, just like the one on the top row. You remember what it means, right? Every card in the row must be a *different race.* That means we can't put the Mage down there. *Select the Barbarian. Place it in [red]this slot.[/red] [blue]Confirm.[/blue]*1opsCard_57666a50fd6522710opsCard_57 16 boardCardZone_11_11941354 6
Nekonyancer*Good!* The icons next to the slot indicate that we'll earn [green]10 points[/green] at the end of the game if we have more cards of this race (Barbarian) in our accolades than any other player has in theirs. According to the chart in the top-right corner, we already have four Barbarians, so those ten points are as good as ours!1opsCard_57666a51053099700
NekonyancerAs usual, the card we didn't put on our wall went into our Stock, where it triggered another ability (because it's of the same race as the card in the [red]*ability slot*[/red]). If you scroll up, you'll see that we drew an Elve and a Barbarian. Hmm. I don't think we need more Barbarians. *Place the Elve in our Stock. [blue]Confirm.[/blue]*2opsCard_94666a51053099710opsCard_18 16 opsCard_117 6
NekonyancerIt's too bad we didn't find a Dwarf with that ability. If we had, we could put it in our stock to trigger our other ability too!1opsCard_151666a51126693b00
NekonyancerThere are a few more scoring mechanics to explain though. Let's start with [red]*this slot.*[/red] Each card in our Accolades with the same *attribute* as the card we place here will be worth [green]+2 points.[/green]3boardCardZone_8_11941354666a51126693b00boardCardZone_8_11941354 6
NekonyancerFor example, according to our Accolades chart, we currently have 3 cards with [blue]*crowns.*[/blue] If we put another card with a crown here, we'll earn least 6 points!4boardCardZone_8_11941354666a51126693b00boardCardZone_8_11941354 6 palmares_2_11_11941354 2 palmares_4_11_11941354 2
Nekonyancer[red]*These three slots*[/red] are all linked by a brown *frieze.* If we put three cards of the same race in these slots, we'll earn an extra 5 points!5boardCardZone_7_11941354666a51126693b00opsCard_136 6 boardCardZone_7_11941354 6 boardCardZone_8_11941354 6
Nekonyancer[blue]Round 6![/blue] This will be the last one I take you through. Did you notice that the bottom row actually has *two friezes?* The second one indicates that if we complete the row between Round 3 and Round 6, we'll earn 4 Trophy Tokens and a special Scoring Token.1opsCard_91666a5124a20c800
NekonyancerLet's do it! *Select these two cards in the indicated order. [blue]Confirm.[/blue]*2opsCard_30666a5124a20c810opsCard_62 18 opsCard_30 17
NekonyancerThe last remaining slot in the bottom row will make each card of the matching race in our Accolades worth [green]+1 point[/green] at the end of the game. *Next, select the Elve and place it in [red]this slot.[/red][blue] Confirm.[/blue]*1opsCard_30666a51471fbcb10opsCard_30 16 boardCardZone_9_11941354 6
Nekonyancer[blue]Wow, we're swimming in tokens now![/blue] Plus, each Elve will now be worth [green]+1 point[/green] for us!1opsToken_221666a5151009ea00
NekonyancerUnfortunately, these benefits came with a drawback: this [blue]*scoring token.*[/blue] It indicates that each card of the *least common attribute* in our accolades is worth [red]-1 point.[/red]2opsToken_181666a5151009ea00opsToken_181 2
Nekonyancer[blue]For example, if we end the game with...[/blue] - 5 crowns - 1 tattoo - 0 earrings - 2 daggers - 1 eyepatch ... then *earrings* will be the least common attribute. We'll lose 1 point for each earring, for a total of [red]minus 0 points.[/red]3opsToken_181666a5151009ea00
NekonyancerIt doesn't seem like a big deal, does it? We can simply pick one attribute to avoid, right? [red]But there's more we have to consider.[/red]4opsToken_181666a5151009ea00
NekonyancerYou see, according to this plaque, each set of 5 *different* attributes in our wall will be worth *4 points* at the end of the game. [green]For example, if we had three of every attribute, we'd earn 12 points![/green]5boardTileZone_11941354666a5151009ea00boardTileZone_11941354 2
NekonyancerFocusing on sets of attributes is a viable strategy, and players can commit even harder to it by filling [red]*this slot*[/red] within the first four rounds of the game. Players who do will replace [blue]*the first plaque*[/blue] with a better one, making each set worth [green]7 points each[/green] instead of 4! Sounds great, right? [red]But there's still more to consider![/red]6boardCardZone_5_11941354666a5151009ea00boardCardZone_5_11941354 6 boardTileZone_11941354 2
Nekonyancer[red]*This slot over here*[/red] incentivizes the *opposite* strategy: hoarding as many cards of the same attribute as possible. Each card with the same attribute as the card placed here will be worth [green]+2 points[/green] at the end of the game.7boardCardZone_8_11941354666a5151009ea00boardCardZone_8_11941354 6
NekonyancerLet's say that we put a card with a *crown* here. If we then add a crowned mage to our Stock, it will be worth 4 points at the end of the game - two for the race, and two for the attribute. It would also activate our [red]*ability*[/red] again. [blue]Getting complicated, right? Isn't it great?[/blue]9boardCardZone_8_11941354666a5151009ea00opsCard_117 6
NekonyancerWhile I'm explaining this space, I should also point out the gold frieze linking three cards in the middle row. If those three cards are the same race, we'll earn an extra [green]5 points[/green] at the end of the game.11boardCardZone_8_11941354666a5151009ea00
NekonyancerJust a couple more things to explain. First, the *Wild Token,* which you may or may not acquire during the game. If you get one, you can place it on any card on our wall to change that card's *attribute.* If you play with default settings, this is only useful for [red]*this slot.*[/red]12boardCardZone_8_11941354666a5151009ea00boardCardZone_8_11941354 6
NekonyancerAlternatively, you can place the Wild Token on any card in your Accolades at the end of the game to change that card's attribute.13palmaresCard_11941354666a5151009ea00
NekonyancerFinally, as players approach the end of the game, it's possible that players will find themselves *unable to fill a slot* (because some cards need to be of different races). If that happens, the unfortunate player must place a card on their wall *face down.* Face down cards have no race and no attribute. Each one on a player's wall is worth [red]-5 points[/red] at the end of the game.14maintitlebar_content666a5151009ea00
Nekonyancer[blue]Okay, I think you know enough to decorate your own dungeon now![/blue] Remember, each game will last exactly *11 rounds* - just long enough for each player to completely fill out their walls.15archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment666a5151009ea00
NekonyancerBy the way, player boards are *double-sided.* This tutorial was played with the default *horn side.* If you toggle the *shield side* in the lobby options, you can explore a whole new set of abilities and scoring criteria! Remember, you can hover over any icon to read how it works. For balancing reasons, whichever side you toggle in the options will apply to *all* players in the game.17maintitlebar_content666a5151009ea00
NekonyancerAfter you play a few games, you might consider activating *Expert Tiles!* In this variant, each player will draw 7 tiles and place one in each of [red]*these slots*[/red] at the beginning of the game.18boardBonusZone_3_11941354666a5151009ea00boardBonusZone_1_11941354 6 boardBonusZone_2_11941354 6 boardBonusZone_3_11941354 6 boardBonusZone_4_11941354 6
NekonyancerIf a player fills every slot in a column, and every card in the column has the same attribute, the tile above it will *activate.* [blue]Activated Expert Tiles can grant...[/blue] - Instant powerful actions. - Weak but permanent bonuses. - Extra endgame scoring criteria.19boardBonusZone_4_11941354666a5151009ea00boardBonusZone_1_11941354 6 boardBonusZone_2_11941354 6 boardBonusZone_3_11941354 6 boardBonusZone_4_11941354 6
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Open Season!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! Big thank yous go out to *Amélie Assié and Romain Lisciandro* for designing the game, *Sit Down!* for publishing, and *Galeelox* for bringing it to BGA! Have fun! :D20maintitlebar_content666a5151009ea00
