Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed5a4be981.55564805.jpg[/img] In New York Zoo, you are designing an animal park! Build *Enclosures,* introduce new animals, and raise their offspring. [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerThis is our *Zoo Board.* The brown area is our [red]*Construction Zone.*[/red] The first player to completely fill their Construction Zone with enclosures and attractions will win the game! [green]Our Zone is slightly larger than our opponent's Zone because we're going first![/green]2square_1_3_5000square_1_6_0 1 square_1_8_0 1 square_1_5_1 1 square_1_8_2 1 square_1_4_3 1 square_1_0_4 1 square_1_2_4 1 square_1_8_4 1 square_1_0_6 1 square_1_8_6 1 square_1_0_8 1 square_1_8_8 1 square_1_0_10 1 square_1_8_10 1 square_1_0_12 1 square_1_8_12 1 square_1_1_13 1 square_1_3_13 1 square_1_5_13 1 square_1_7_13 1
NekonyancerOn our turn, we must move the *elephant* clockwise around the main board. [blue]You may need to drag the board to the left to see the elephant![/blue] The elephant can move... • *1-4 spaces* in games with *2 or 4 players.* • *1-3 spaces* in games with *3 or 5 players.*3birth_zone_2000
NekonyancerThis tutorial was made with *2-player game,* so it can move *1-4 spaces* per turn. [green]You can see a reminder of this in the top-left corner of your Zoo Board![/green] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed5a703946.61689497.jpg[/img]4pboard_1000
Nekonyancer[blue]Each space has either...[/blue] • Two animals OR • A stack of enclosures. If we land on animals, we can take animals. If we land on an enclosure stack, we must take the *top tile* from the stack.5patch_55000
NekonyancerThere are also some light brown circles on the board, each featuring a single animal species. They represent [red]*breeding phases.*[/red] They are *not* spaces we can move to.6birth_zone_3000birth_zone_1 6 birth_zone_2 6 birth_zone_3 6 birth_zone_4 6
NekonyancerIn short, 1-4 spaces clockwise, green tiles and blue animals count as spaces, brown animals don't. For our first turn, we can move to any of [red]*these spaces:*[/red] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed5a893649.99575308.jpg[/img]7maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerWe'll start by placing an *enclosure.* [blue]When placing enclosures, we CAN'T:[/blue] • overlap or stack tiles. • have any parts sticking outside the Construction Zone. [blue]We CAN:[/blue] • rotate or flip them however we like. • place them anywhere in the zone.8maintitlebar_content000
Nekonyancer[red]Let's try it![/red] *1.* Click on the stack of tiles 1 space to the right of the Elephant. *2.* Place the tile on the [blue]*indicated spaces.*[/blue] *3.* Confirm!9archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment010square_1_4_3 2 square_1_5_3 2 square_1_3_4 2 square_1_4_4 2 square_1_5_4 2 square_1_3_5 2 square_1_4_5 2
Nekonyancer*Great!* Whenever you place an enclosure in your zoo, you MUST place at least 1 animal in it. These animals can come from [red]*our houses*[/red] or another enclosure. Of course, each enclosure can only house *one type* of animal.1square_1_3_565725f9bac4c500house_1_1 1 house_1_2 1 house_1_3 1
NekonyancerWe started the game with a flamingo and a meerkat. Let's put the meerkat in the enclosure! *1.* Select the [red]*meerkat.*[/red] *2.* Place it on the *middle* square of the enclosure.2square_1_3_565725f9bac4c510house_1_1 1
Nekonyancer*Great!* Next, whenever you place an animal in an enclosure, you can move an [blue]second animal of that type[/blue] in with it! However, we don't have any other meerkats to move, so we'll skip this step.1meerkat_165725fa86436800
NekonyancerThat's it for our turn! [red]Our opponent will take their turn now...[/red]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment65725fa86436800
NekonyancerNext turn! Let's take some animals. *Move the elephant to [red]this space![/red]*1action_zone_anml_1765725fd693ac910action_zone_anml_17 6
Nekonyancer[blue]Whenever you land on an animal space, you can take...[/blue] • The two animals shown on the space (blue buttons) *OR* • Any one animal (white buttons).1place_animal_meerkat65725fe2e972900
NekonyancerLet's take two! *First, click on the [blue]Meerkat[/blue] button.* *Place the meerkat in the [red]top-right space[/red] of our enclosure!*2place_animal_meerkat65725fe2e972910place_animal_meerkat 2 square_1_3_5 1
NekonyancerSince we added an animal to an enclosure, we again have an opportunity to add a second animal of that type from somewhere else in our zoo. And again, we'll skip this because we don't have any others. *Next, place the [blue]flamingo[/blue] in this [red]house.[/red]*1meerkat_1065725feb9bab510place_animal_flamingo 2 house_1_1 1
Nekonyancer*Good.* I don't have much to say about houses. Each one can accommodate one animal. Uh... that's it.1house_1_165725fefe4e4d00
NekonyancerI mentioned earlier that light brown spaces represent breeding phases. Our opponent just triggered the [red]*meerkat breeding phase*[/red] by passing through it! Note that they've already performed their action for the turn. Breeding phases are only triggered at the *ends* of turns.1birth_zone_46572600cf390e00birth_zone_4 6
NekonyancerWhen a breeding phase is triggered, any enclosure that has at least two of the corresponding animal can add an additional animal to it! *Click on this space to add a [red]meerkat![/red] Then confirm!*2square_1_4_56572600cf390e10square_1_4_5 1
Nekonyancer*Good!* And since we added an animal to an enclosure, we again get an opportunity to - [green]I don't have to finish this sentence, do I?[/green] For the third time, we'll skip this step.1meerkat_1165726023157d200
NekonyancerNote that you can only gain 1 animal per enclosure in a breeding phase. If we had 5 meerkats here, we still would have gained only 1. However, if we had a *second* enclosure with 2 meerkats, we would have earned a *second* meerkat there! [green]And no more than that. 2 breedings maximum.[/green]2meerkat_1165726023157d200
NekonyancerThere's another step here that only occurs in *2/3 player games.* If a player gains at least 1 animal in a breeding phase, they can then select an additional enclosure to breed, [blue]regardless of its species.[/blue] This is called *bonus breeding.* We'll see it in action later.3meerkat_1165726023157d200
NekonyancerFor our next turn, let's pick up another enclosure. *1.* Move the elephant *3 spaces.* *2.* Place the tile in the [blue]*indicated spaces.*[/blue] You will need to use the rotation buttons on the left and right sides of your board. *3.* Confirm!1pboard_265726082e95d410square_1_3_12 2 square_1_0_13 2 square_1_1_13 2 square_1_2_13 2 square_1_3_13 2 square_1_4_13 2
NekonyancerRemember, whenever you get an enclosure, you must move 1 or 2 animals into it. Select [blue]*this flamingo*[/blue] and place it [red]*here.*[/red]1square_1_3_13657260ae8bd1e10square_1_3_13 1 house_1_1 2
Nekonyancer*Place the [blue]other flamingo[/blue] [red]here![/red]*1square_1_1_13657260b24158610square_1_1_13 1 house_1_2 2
NekonyancerOur opponent just triggered *flamingo breeding* by moving the elephant past it! [green]We got our flamingo enclosure set up just in time![/green]1map_surface657260cb33c1600
Nekonyancer*Click [red]here[/red] to place our new flamingo! Then confirm!*2square_1_2_13657260cb33c1610square_1_2_13 1
NekonyancerNow we can take advantage of *Bonus Breeding!* We gained at least 1 animal from normal breeding, so we can select 1 other enclosure of any species to breed as well! Obviously, we'll choose the Meerkats. *Click [red]here[/red] to place a meerkat! Then confirm!*1square_1_3_4657260db9572010square_1_3_4 1
NekonyancerEventually, these enclosures will fill up with animals. When an enclosure fills up completely, it is immediately *scored.* [green]Don't tell me you can't "score" in a game with no points. I know that. It specifically says "scored" in the rulebook, so hush.[/green]1meerkat_10657260df66f8c00
NekonyancerWhen an enclosure is scored, every animal in it is *removed.* If you have any [red]*houses*[/red] open, you may move one of those removed animals to a house. Then, you can take an [blue]*attraction*[/blue] from the supply and add it anywhere on your board! You may need to scroll down to see the attractions.2meerkat_12657260df66f8c00house_1_1 1 house_1_2 1 house_1_3 1 bonus_market 2
NekonyancerAttractions don't do anything special, but they use up space on your board, bringing you closer to victory!3patch_6657260df66f8c00
NekonyancerThe game will continue as you've seen until one player completely fills up their board. The game will end at the end of that turn (after bonus breeding). Then, whoever has no space remaining in their zoo wins the game! Remaining players are placed according to how much open space they have remaining on their boards. Ties are broken by whoever has the most animals.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment657260df66f8c00
NekonyancerIf you're short on time, you might consider enabling *"Fast Game"* in the lobby. This variant can only be used with *2 players.* It lets each player place some enclosures on their board before the game actually starts.5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment657260df66f8c00
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for New York Zoo!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about this tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! A big thank you goes out to *Mizutismask* for bringing this game to BGA! Have fun! :D6maintitlebar_content657260df66f8c00
