Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed14add621.08761914.jpg[/img] 2212. Ginkgo Biloba, the oldest and strongest tree in the world, has become the symbol for a new method for building cities in symbiosis with nature. Who will be the best urban planner in Gingkopolis? [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
NekonyancerIn *Ginkgopolis,* players will use resources and tiles to expand a communal city. They will also enlist the help of experts that will grant bonuses when certain actions are taken. You can earn points with certain actions, certain experts, or by controlling large districts of the city at the end of the game. [green]Whoever has the most points wins![/green]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
NekonyancerAt the beginning of the game, each player is dealt a [red]*hand of four experts.*[/red] We're going to *draft* these. That means we'll pick one, and pass the rest to the next player! Each expert provides *starting resources,* shown in the top-left corner, and a *permanent bonus,* shown along the bottom of the card. [green][tip] You can see details about each card's bonus by hovering over it![/green]3characterCardSelectionBoard_item_98000characterCardSelectionBoard_item_74 6 characterCardSelectionBoard_item_82 6 characterCardSelectionBoard_item_98 6 characterCardSelectionBoard_item_99 6
NekonyancerThis woman looks like she knows her stuff! *Select this expert. Then click on "Confirm" at the top!*4characterCardSelectionBoard_item_82010characterCardSelectionBoard_item_82 16
Nekonyancer*Good!* Our remaining cards were passed to our opponent, and we got their hand in return. *Select this expert next!*1characterCardSelectionBoard_item_876449e953ed90110characterCardSelectionBoard_item_87 16
Nekonyancer*And finally, select this one.* The last card of each hand will be discarded.1characterCardSelectionBoard_item_746449e984e506810characterCardSelectionBoard_item_74 16 characterCardSelectionBoard_item_98 13
Nekonyancer*Now we're ready to start the game!* If you scroll down, you'll see that the experts gave us a few things to start the game with. Those things are: [green]*Success*[/green] (victory points). [red]*Resources.*[/red] [blue]*Tiles.*[/blue] Again, these things were shown in the top-left corner of each card!1GSresourceCounterValue_119413546449e9aa54fe701vp_panel 8 res_panel 6 hiddenTilesBoard_item_13 7 hiddenTilesBoard_item_10 7
NekonyancerAlso, note that the experts we picked have been sorted into different *categories,* depending on the kind of action they augment. These actions are: [red]*Exploit.*[/red] [blue]*Urbanize.*[/blue] [green]*Construct.*[/green] We'll get to these actions in a second.2urbanizeZone_92143487_Wrapper6449e9aa54fe700exploitZoneImage_92143487 1 urbanizeZoneImage_92143487 2 constructZoneImage_92143487 3
NekonyancerFinally, note that each player drew four cards. These cards can be either: [red]*- Building cards,*[/red] each of which corresponds to a different tile in the city of Ginkgopolis. [blue]*- Urbanization cards,*[/blue] each of which corresponds to a different letter in the city.3hiddenCardHandBoard_item_416449e9aa54fe700hiddenCardHandBoard_item_3 6 hiddenCardHandBoard_item_41 6 hiddenCardHandBoard_item_2 6 hiddenCardHandBoard_item_66 7
NekonyancerEach turn, all players must simultaneously choose an action and a card in their hand. When all players have chosen, those choices are revealed and executed! Again, the possible actions are *Exploit, Urbanize, and Construct.* Let's start by learning about the *Construct* action.4hiddenCardHandBoard_item_416449e9aa54fe700
NekonyancerWhen you construct, you must select a *card* and a *tile* in your inventory. The tile is then placed on top of the location indicated by the card.5hiddenCardHandBoard_item_416449e9aa54fe700
NekonyancerFor example, if we chose [blue]*this card*[/blue] and [red]*this tile,*[/red] then we'd place the 13-Red tile on top of the 1-Blue tile in the city! When we do this, [red]we need to consider the costs.[/red]6hiddenCardHandBoard_item_416449e9aa54fe700hiddenTilesBoard_item_13 6 hiddenCardHandBoard_item_41 7
NekonyancerThere are three costs associated with construction: *1.* A number of resources equal to the *floor* of the tile. 2nd floor = 2 resources. 3rd floor = 3 resources. And so on. These resources are placed on top of the newly constructed tile.7res_panel6449e9aa54fe700res_panel 6
Nekonyancer*2.* If the color of the tile does not match the color of the location, the player must pay one extra [red]*resource*[/red] to the supply. (This resource does not go on the tile.) *3.* If the tile's number is less than the location's number, the player must pay the difference in [green]*Success*[/green] (Victory Points).8res_panel6449e9aa54fe700vp_panel 8 res_panel 6
NekonyancerAfter we construct, the card we select will go into our [red]*Played Cards area.*[/red] We'll then get a bonus from each card in the [blue]*Construct category.*[/blue]9constructZone_92143487_Wrapper6449e9aa54fe700visiblePlayerBoard_92143487 1 constructZone_92143487_Wrapper 7
NekonyancerI know that was a lot to absorb, but don't worry. I'll take you through it step by step. *Select the indicated card and tile. Then click on "Construct" at the top!*1hiddenCardHandBoard_item_666449ea17855f711button_3_id 16 hiddenTilesBoard_item_10 16 hiddenCardHandBoard_item_2 16
Nekonyancer*Okay!* First, the [red]*tile*[/red] we selected was placed on the location indicated by our card...1tileContainer_X_-1_Y_06449ea501b13100tileContainer_X_-1_Y_0 6
NekonyancerThen, since the tile is on the *second floor,* two of our [red]*resources*[/red] were placed on it! 2tileContainer_X_-1_Y_06449ea501b36600resourcePawn_-1_0_000000 1
NekonyancerMeanwhile, the card we selected was moved to our [red]*Played Cards*[/red] area. It will make our Urbanize actions stronger from now on! (You'll see it if you scroll down.) To replace it, a card corresponding to the new Red 10 tile was placed in [blue]*the deck's*[/blue] discard pile. It will get shuffled in later.3Cards_on_deck_left_quantity6449ea501b36600Cards_on_deck_left_quantity 7 zoneCard_2 6
NekonyancerFinally, the cards in our *Construct* category triggered, giving us [blue]*1 new tile*[/blue] and [green]*1 Success.*[/green] Scroll down to take a look.4tileContainer_X_1_Y_-16449ea501bb6201vp_panel 8 hiddenTilesBoard_item_34 7 zoneCard_74 12 zoneCard_87 12
Nekonyancer*Okay, that was one turn!* After everyone's actions were executed, everyone's cards were passed to the next person. Each player then drew [blue]*one new card,*[/blue] bringing them back to 4 cards.1tileContainer_X_2_Y_16449eae99557901hiddenCardHandBoard_item_61 6 hiddenCardHandBoard_item_63 6 hiddenCardHandBoard_item_65 6 hiddenCardHandBoard_item_68 7
NekonyancerWow, all the cards in our hand are [red]*Urbanization cards.*[/red] I guess I'll explain the *Urbanize* action next! Just like with a Construct action, you'll have to select *a card* and *a tile.* The tile will then be placed on the location indicated by the card.2hiddenCardHandBoard_item_686449eae99557900hiddenCardHandBoard_item_61 6 hiddenCardHandBoard_item_63 6 hiddenCardHandBoard_item_65 6 hiddenCardHandBoard_item_68 6
NekonyancerAfterward, we'll place one resource on it and gain one benefit from each orthogonally adjacent tile. [red]Red tiles grant resources,[/red] [blue]Blues grant tiles,[/blue] and [green]Yellows grant Success.[/green] We'll also gain a bonus from each card in our [red]*Urbanize category.*[/red] Finally, we'll move the *Letter* to an open adjacent spot.3hiddenCardHandBoard_item_686449eae99557900urbanizeZone_92143487_Wrapper 6
NekonyancerLet's try it! *Select the indicated card and tile. Then click on "Urbanize" at the top!*4hiddenCardHandBoard_item_686449eae99557910hiddenTilesBoard_item_34 16 hiddenCardHandBoard_item_68 16
Nekonyancer*Here we go!* The [red]*tile we selected*[/red] was placed in the H location. Forgot to mention, BGA will also add a card to the discard pile that corresponds to this building!1tileContainer_X_0_Y_26449eb35c2a9200tileContainer_X_0_Y_2 6
NekonyancerThen, [blue]*one resource*[/blue] was placed on it.2resourcePawn_0_2_0000006449eb35c2cb300resourcePawn_0_2_000000 2
NekonyancerThe [blue]*Letter*[/blue] was moved to an adjacent open spot. If there were two adjacent open spots, we would get to choose where to place it.3tileContainer_X_0_Y_36449eb35c2ee100tileContainer_X_0_Y_3 2
Nekonyancer*Finally, we got stuff!* We gained one [green]*Success*[/green] for urbanizing next to a [green]*yellow tile,*[/green] and one [blue]*tile*[/blue] for urbanizing next to a [blue]*blue tile!*[/blue] (Scroll down.) We also gained two [red]*resources*[/red] from the cards in our [red]*Urbanize*[/red] category!4GSresourceCounterValue_119413546449eb35c386501tileContainer_X_0_Y_1 7 tileContainer_X_-1_Y_2 8 vp_panel 8 res_panel 6 hiddenTilesBoard_item_46 7 urbanizeZone_92143487_Wrapper 6
Nekonyancer*Turn 3!* Just like before, we exchanged hands and drew one new card. This time, let's learn about the *Exploit* action.5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6449eb35c49ee00
NekonyancerWhen you *Exploit,* you only select a card, not a tile. If you select an [red]*Urbanization*[/red] card with your exploit action, you may take one resource or one tile. This is shown in the bottom-right corner of the card.6hiddenCardHandBoard_item_666449eb35c49ee00hiddenCardHandBoard_item_66 6
NekonyancerIf you select a building tile, you gain items of the appropriate type. [red]Red building --> resources.[/red] [blue]Blue --> tiles.[/blue] [green]Yellow --> Success.[/green] The number of items received depends on the building's *floor.* For example, a red building on the 2nd floor would grant 2 resources.7hiddenCardHandBoard_item_416449eb35c49ee00
NekonyancerWhichever kind of card you use, you also gain a bonus from each card in your [red]*Exploit category.*[/red] We don't have any, so this is a rather poor move for us, but I need to show you how the action works anyway. *Select this card! Then click on "Exploit" at the top!*8hiddenCardHandBoard_item_416449eb35c49ee10button_1_id 16 hiddenCardHandBoard_item_41 16 exploitZone_92143487_Wrapper 6
Nekonyancer[green]We're almost done! Just a couple more things to show you.[/green] It looks like our hand this turn is four [red]*Urbanization*[/red] cards. If you had your heart set on Construction, this would be a perfect time for a *New Hand Token!*1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6449ebe05d74f00hiddenCardHandBoard_item_61 6 hiddenCardHandBoard_item_63 6 hiddenCardHandBoard_item_65 6 hiddenCardHandBoard_item_71 6
NekonyancerEach person starts with *2 [blue]New Hand tokens,[/blue]* and there is no way to get more. When you use one, you discard your hand and draw a new hand of four cards. [blue]Each unused token is worth 2 Success at the end of the game![/blue]2newHandTile6449ebe05d74f00newHandTile_panel 7
Nekonyancer*Let's use one!* *Click on "Use a new hand token" at the top! Then confirm!*3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6449ebe05d74f10
Nekonyancer*Great!* We got some building cards for some of the newer buildings in Ginkgopolis! Remember, whenever a building is added to the city, its corresponding card is added to the deck's discard pile!1hiddenCardHandBoard_item_646449ebfa73b5a00
NekonyancerLet's take one more action together. *Select the indicated card and tile. Then click on "Construct" at the top!*2hiddenCardHandBoard_item_646449ebfa73b5a10button_3_id 16 hiddenTilesBoard_item_13 16 hiddenCardHandBoard_item_10 16
NekonyancerThis time, we'll be constructing on the Red 10 tile. But our [blue]*resources*[/blue] from earlier are still sitting on it! Whenever this happens, the resources are returned to their owner. But if we return an opponent's resources, they gain [green]1 Success[/green] per resource returned!1tileContainer_X_-1_Y_06449ed0b0338800resourcePawn_-1_0_000000 2
NekonyancerAlso, note that this time we placed *3* resources on the tile. That's because it's now on the *third floor!*1tileContainer_X_-1_Y_06449ed1b689a400
NekonyancerAlso, scroll down for a second. The 10 Red card went into our Played Cards area, and it's part of a new category: [red]*endgame bonuses.*[/red] I think the category is self-explanatory. You can hover over the card itself for more information!2tileContainer_X_-1_Y_06449ed1b689a401endGameBonusZone_92143487_Wrapper 6
NekonyancerOkay, I think you've seen enough! Now I'll talk about the end of the game and scoring. When the [blue]*pile of available tiles*[/blue] is exhausted, the players must give up tiles from their own inventories to replenish the supply. Each tile given up yields [green]1 Success![/green] When the pile is [red]exhausted for the 2nd time,[/red] the players complete the current round, and then the game ends.3Tiles_left_quantity6449ed1b689a400Tiles_left_quantity 2
Nekonyancer[blue]Your total success comes from four sources:[/blue] - Success tokens gained throughout the game. - Bonuses from cards in your [red]*Endgame*[/red] category. - Success from unused New Hand tokens (2 each). - Success according to each player's presence in districts of the city. I'll explain that last part next.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6449ed1b689a400
NekonyancerA *District* is an area of the city formed by two orthogonally adjacent buildings of the same color. An isolated building is not considered a district. Thus, [red]*this*[/red] is a district, but [blue]*these*[/blue] are not.5tileContainer_X_0_Y_-16449ed1b689a400tileContainer_X_1_Y_-1 7 tileContainer_X_-1_Y_0 6 tileContainer_X_-1_Y_-1 6 tileContainer_X_0_Y_-1 7
NekonyancerIn each district, the player with the *most resources* in that district gains Success equal to the total number of resources in the district. The player with the *second most resources* in the district gets 1 success for each of their own resources in the district. [green]Let's look at some examples.[/green]6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6449ed1b689a400
NekonyancerIn [red]*this district,*[/red] we have *3* resources, and our opponent has *2.* Since we have the most, we'll gain 5 Success (3 + 2). Our opponent has the second most, so they'll gain 2 Success.7archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6449ed1b689a400tileContainer_X_-1_Y_0 6 tileContainer_X_-1_Y_-1 6
NekonyancerIn [blue]*this district,*[/blue] our opponent is the only player with resources! That means they win *both 1st and 2nd place* in the district, earning *both bonuses.* In other words, they earn *2* points per resource.8tileContainer_X_1_Y_06449ed1b689a400tileContainer_X_1_Y_0 7 tileContainer_X_0_Y_0 7
NekonyancerIn [red]*this case,*[/red] we and our opponent are tied at one resource each. The *first tiebreaker* is whoever owns the *tallest* building. But both of these buildings are only one floor tall. The *second tiebreaker* is the building's number. Our opponent's building has a higher number than ours, so they win this district!9tileContainer_X_0_Y_26449ed1b689a400tileContainer_X_0_Y_2 6 tileContainer_X_-1_Y_2 6
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Ginkgopolis!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! A big thank you goes out to *locerol* for bringing this game to BGA! Have fun! :D10archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6449ed1b689a400
