Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edb8558914.99398678.jpg[/img] You are a small-town French cheesemaker in the early 20th century making, aging, and selling your artisanal cheeses. Your journey is a symphony of passion and dedication as you strive to create the most prestigious creamery with the most sought-after cheeses in all of France! [green][tip]This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerRight now, you should be able to see the *"Welcome"* box on your screen. It's very handy for when you need to check a specific rule, but we don't need it right now. *Click on the "X" in the top-right corner of the box. Then continue to the next step.*3fr-worker-6-front000
NekonyancerDuring the tutorial, if you need to review something we covered, just click on the *"?"* in the bottom-left corner to view the Welcome box again. You'll be able to find the relevant info easily! [blue]Now, on with the tutorial![/blue]4bga-help_buttons000
NekonyancerFromage is a simultaneous worker-placement game where you *make cheese* and *gather resources* by placing workers onto the board quadrant that is facing you. Once all players have finished their actions, the board *rotates,* aging the cheese, and presenting everyone with a new quadrant!5player_name_92143487000
NekonyancerAt the end of the game, you score prestige for your cheese and for managing your creamery’s resources. [green]The player with the most prestige wins![/green]6player_name_92143487000
Nekonyancer[blue]As you can see, the main board is divided into four quadrants.[/blue] Each quadrant provides access to one kind of *resource* (around the center of the board) and one *venue.*7fr-main-board-resource-tile000
NekonyancerEach player gets [red]*3 workers,*[/red] each representing a different kind of cheese: *Soft* (white), *Hard* (yellow), and *Bleu* (blue). Each turn, we can command each worker to either [blue]*Make Cheese*[/blue] or [blue]*Gather Resources.*[/blue] You should be able to see those actions at the top of the screen!8fr-worker-4-front000enterMakeCheese 2 enterGatherResources 2 fr-player-board-worker-reserve-92143487 1
Nekonyancer[green]We'll start with the Make Cheese action.[/green] This action allows you to place a worker on any open cheese slot in our quadrant's *venue.* Right now, it's the [blue]*Bistro.*[/blue] You might need to scroll down a little bit to see it. It will also help if you click on the 👁️ in the top-left corner (see arrow). It will zoom in on our quadrant!9player_name_92143487000fr-main-board-buttons 11 fr-main-board-section-bistro-help-button 7
NekonyancerThere are nine tables in the [blue]*Bistro,*[/blue] but since this is a 2-player game, we'll only use six of them. Each table has two *cheese slots* on it.10fr-main-board-section-bistro-scoring-overlay-marker000fr-main-board-section-bistro-help-button 7
NekonyancerEach slot has a *Cheese Type.* We can only place a worker on a slot if their types *match.* For example, only our *Hard* cheese worker can be placed on these slots... [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edb87b6684.12557521.jpg[/img] and only our *Blue* one can be placed on these! [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edb89443d1.28312493.jpg[/img]11fr-main-board-section-bistro-scoring-overlay-marker000
NekonyancerLet's give it a try. *Click on [blue]"Make Cheese!"[/blue]*12enterMakeCheese010enterMakeCheese 2
Nekonyancer*Good!* Now BGA wants to know which slot we want to place a worker on. *Click on [red]this slot.[/red]* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edb8ac2726.71382894.jpg[/img] *Then [blue]"Confirm"[/blue] your action!*1player_name_9214348766857481dd94110
Nekonyancer[blue]Great! We successfully placed some cheese in the Bistro.[/blue] Next, I'll explain *Age.* Each plate of cheese has an *Age* in addition to a type, which determines how long we'll have to wait to get our worker back.1fr-worker-4-front6685748a0b91800
Nekonyancer[blue]Each cheese can be aged for...[/blue] *1 month* (bronze plate). *2 months* (silver plate). *3 months* (gold plate). The cheese we just placed in the Bistro is on a gold plate, indicating an age of 3 months. [red]That means we'll have to wait 3 turns to get this worker back![/red] 😧2fr-worker-4-front6685748a0b91800
Nekonyancer[red]So why would we want to make an aged cheese?[/red] Well, first of all, each venue has a unique [red]*scoring mechanic.*[/red] We'll often need aged cheeses to maximize our Prestige.4fr-main-board-section-bistro-scoring-overlay-marker6685748a0b91800fr-main-board-section-bistro-scoring-overlay 6
NekonyancerAt the end of the game, each of our cheeses in the [blue]*Bistro*[/blue] will score Prestige depending on how many *pairings* we made. A *pairing* is a table on which we occupy *both* cheese slots.5fr-main-board-section-bistro-scoring-overlay-marker6685748a0b91800fr-main-board-section-bistro-help-button 7
NekonyancerSo, if we fill this [red]*silver plate*[/red] later, we'll have *1 Pairing.* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edb8cd6da8.27486889.jpg[/img] According to the [blue]*scoring rubric,*[/blue] with 1 Pairing, each bronze plate is worth *1* prestige, each silver plate is worth *3,* and each gold plate is worth *5.* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edb8ec6d93.07383329.jpg[/img]6fr-main-board-section-bistro-scoring-overlay-marker6685748a0b91800fr-main-board-section-bistro-scoring-overlay 7
NekonyancerIn addition, we'll often have to make aged cheeses to fulfill *Orders.* We started the game with [blue]*1 Order card.*[/blue] *Scroll down* until you find it.7fr-main-board-section-bistro-scoring-overlay-marker6685748a0b91800fr-player-board-uncompleted-orders-92143487 7
NekonyancerThis order card requires us to make a 3-month-old Hard cheese (gold plate). [green]We just did that, so we can complete the order![/green] *Click on the card! Alternatively, click on [blue]"Complete Gruyère"[/blue] at the top!*8fr-order-32-front6685748a0b91810completeOrderCard32 2
Nekonyancer[blue]Great! The order card was moved to our Completed box.[/blue] At the end of the game, we'll score *1/2/3/5/7/10* Prestige for completing *1/2/3/4/5/6* orders. Each completed order after the 6th one is worth another 4 Prestige.1fr-order-32-back6685748cafc3f00
NekonyancerThat's it for our [blue]Make Cheese[/blue] action. We still have two available workers. Let's use one of them to [blue]Gather Resources.[/blue] *Scroll up to the main board before you continue.*2fr-worker-6-front6685748cafc3f00
NekonyancerThere are four kinds of resources in the game (order cards, livestock, fruit, and buildings), each only available in one quadrant. Just like when making cheese, we only have access to the quadrant that is *facing us.* The one facing us - the one with the Bistro - has *Fruit.*3fr-main-board-resource-tile6685748cafc3f00
NekonyancerAs you can see, there are three Fruit resource spaces. The number on each space indicates how much of the resource it provides *AND* how long it will take to get the worker back. [blue]Just like cheese plates![/blue] *Click on [blue]"Gather Resources"[/blue] at the top.*4fr-main-board-resource-tile6685748cafc3f10enterGatherResources 16
NekonyancerNext, we have to tell BGA which worker we want to use and which space we want to place it on. *Select the White cheese worker and 1 Fruit. Then confirm!*1fr-gather-resources-cancel-button668574901ed7310
Nekonyancer*Great!* We immediately gained *1 Fruit token.* You should be able to see it in your inventory to the right, as well as on our [red]*personal board*[/red] below. [green]Some cheese slots on the board will require us to spend Fruit. We'll get more into that later.[/green]1fr-worker-1-front668574a358cb100fr-player-board-fruit-reserve-92143487 6
NekonyancerOkay, now we've *made cheese* and *gathered resources.* There's one more action button at the top (Use Milking Parlour), but that's a special action that uses Livestock resources to make cheese. I think we'll hold onto our Livestock for now. *Click on [red]End Turn.[/red]*2player_name_92143487668574a358cb110endTurn 16
NekonyancerWe've ended our turn, but remember: all players take their turns *simultaneously* in Fromage. Our opponent is still considering his moves. When he's ready, the entire board will rotate *90 degrees clockwise,* giving each player access to a new quadrant!3player_name_92143487668574a358cb100
Nekonyancer[blue]Turn 2![/blue] Remember the worker that we used to gather Fruit? After the board rotated, that worker was pointed directly at us. [green]At the beginning of each round, any of our workers that are pointed directly at us will return to us![/green]1fr-worker-1-front66857506e80b900
NekonyancerJust like before, we should *Make Cheese* and *Gather Resources.* [green]We'll start by gathering resources this time.[/green]2player_name_9214348766857506e80b900
NekonyancerOur new quadrant offers *structure tokens,* which can be used to unlock permanent bonuses. They can be very powerful in the long run! *Click on [blue]"Gather Resources."[/blue]*3fr-main-board-resource-tile66857506e80b910enterGatherResources 16
Nekonyancer*Select the Blue worker and 2 Structure Tokens. Then confirm!*1fr-gather-resources-cancel-button6685758e1589510
NekonyancerGreat! There are [blue]*2 Structure Tokens*[/blue] on our personal board now! *Scroll down* until you find them.1player_name_92143487668575b67299900fr-player-board-structure-reserve-92143487 7
NekonyancerWe can build up to four different structures throughout the game. The boxes on each space indicate how many Structure tokens it requires. If you click on [red]*this tab*[/red] to view our opponent's board, you'll see that he has access to a completely different set of structures!2fr-structure-card-38668575b67299900fr-player-areas-switch-11941354 16
Nekonyancer*Go back to our board.* It looks like we have enough tokens for either the [blue]Garden Shed[/blue] or the [blue]Delicatessen.[/blue] [green][tip] You can read details about each structure by hovering over it![/green]3fr-structure-card-38668575b67299900fr-player-areas-switch-92143487 16
NekonyancerHmm... The *Delicatessen* gives us a free structure token whenever we place cheese in the [green]*Fromagerie...*[/green] Hey! The [green]*Fromagerie*[/green] is in our quadrant! Let's go with the Delicatessen then. *Click here to construct it!*4fr-structure-card-38668575b67299910fr-main-board-section-fromagerie-help-button 8 fr-structure-card-structure-stock-38 16
NekonyancerGreat! Now that our Delicatessen is ready, let's make cheese. *Click on [blue]"Make Cheese"[/blue] at the top.*1fr-structure-card-38668575ba4d4ae10enterMakeCheese 16
Nekonyancer*Click on the [red]Soft cheese slot[/red] on the bottom-right shelf!* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edb91232f8.92655050.jpg[/img] *Then [blue]"Confirm"[/blue] your action!*1fr-structure-card-structure-stock-48668575bcf17d110fr-make-cheese-confirm-button 16
NekonyancerExcellent! Placing cheese in the Fromagerie triggered our Delicatessen! *Click on [blue]"Confirm"[/blue] to gain a structure token!*1fr-gain-resources-confirm-button668575ca1cbb410fr-gain-resources-confirm-button 16
Nekonyancer*Great!* Each shelf in the Fromagerie grants a different *placement bonus* when we place cheese on it. The one we placed on grants 1 Prestige. You can hover over various shelves to read the rest.2fr-worker-1-front668575d0997b700
NekonyancerIn addition, we'll receive Prestige at the end of the game depending on how many *different shelves* we placed cheese on, according to [blue]*this scoring rubric.*[/blue] [green]For example, if we have cheese on four shelves at the end of the game, we'll score 9 Prestige.[/green]3fr-main-board-section-fromagerie-scoring-overlay668575d0997b700fr-main-board-section-fromagerie-scoring-overlay 7
NekonyancerThat's all for this turn! *Click on [red]End Turn[/red] at the top.*4endTurn668575d0997b710endTurn 1
Nekonyancer[green]Turn 3![/green] This quadrant gives us access to *Order cards* and the [blue]*Festival.*[/blue]1fr-main-board-resource-tile668575fbbe71300fr-main-board-section-festival-help-button 7
NekonyancerWe'll start by getting a couple more Order cards. *Click on [blue]"Gather Resources"[/blue] at the top.*2enterGatherResources668575fbbe71310enterGatherResources 2
Nekonyancer[red]Huh? It looks like we're being forced to use our White worker![/red] Oh, I see why. If you look at the board carefully (perhaps using the 👁️ to zoom out), you'll see that our other two workers are still occupied with their tasks. Well, that's okay. *Select 2 Order cards. Then Confirm. Then Confirm again!* After that, ignore the error and click *"Continue."*1player_name_92143487668576b75cb2d00fr-main-board-toggle-view-button 11
NekonyancerOkay, two Order cards were added to our inventory. We're out of workers now, so it looks like we can't make any cheese for the Festival... or can we? Hmm... let's use a [blue]*Milking Parlour.*[/blue] *Scroll down to our personal board.*1fr-main-board-section-festival-scoring-overlay668576bf20b2400fr-player-board-milk-parlour-92143487-2 7 fr-player-board-milk-parlour-92143487-3 7 fr-player-board-milk-parlour-92143487-4 7 fr-player-board-milk-parlour-92143487-5 7
NekonyancerEach player has four [blue]*Milking Parlours*[/blue] on their board. If we have enough [red]*Livestock,*[/red] we can use one to place cheese in our current active quadrant. This does *NOT* require a worker! :D2fr-player-board-milk-parlour-92143487-4668576bf20b2400fr-player-board-livestock-reserve-92143487 6 fr-player-board-milk-parlour-92143487-2 7 fr-player-board-milk-parlour-92143487-3 7 fr-player-board-milk-parlour-92143487-4 7 fr-player-board-milk-parlour-92143487-5 7
NekonyancerWe started the game with [red]*2 Livestock,*[/red] which is just enough for our [blue]*cheapest Parlour.*[/blue] Hmm... Looks like it will produce 1-month-old Blue cheese. That's fine. *Click on the [blue]Parlour![/blue]*3fr-player-board-livestock-reserve-92143487668576bf20b2410fr-player-board-livestock-reserve-92143487 6 fr-player-board-milk-parlour-92143487-2 7
Nekonyancer*Scroll back up to the Festival.* It looks like there's only one space in the festival that will accept 1-month-old Blue cheese. If you look closely at the space, you'll see a small icon on the cheese. It's a jar of *jam!* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edb92c27a6.42454691.jpg[/img]1player_name_92143487668576c61248d00
NekonyancerIn order to place cheese on such a space, we'll need some *Fruit.* Good thing we picked up some on our first turn! [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edb943eb74.14460641.jpg[/img] *Click on the space. Then [blue]confirm![/blue]*2player_name_92143487668576c61248d10fr-make-cheese-confirm-button 16
NekonyancerGreat! In the *Festival,* we're trying to create the largest possible group of orthogonally connected spaces (up/down/left/right). The bigger the group, the more points we get, according to [blue]*this scoring rubric.*[/blue]1fr-main-board-section-festival-scoring-overlay668576cb2bf3700fr-main-board-section-festival-scoring-overlay 7
NekonyancerSpaces featuring a French flag are *Free Sample spaces.* They count as part of every player's largest group. Our opponent placed an 3-month-old Hard cheese in the Festival, which is adjacent to two free sample spaces. With that single action, they created a group of [red]*3 orthogonally connected spaces,*[/red] which is worth [green]4 Prestige![/green] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edb95cf6e0.32656993.jpg[/img]2player_name_92143487668576cb2bf3700
NekonyancerNext, let's learn more about Fruit and Jam. *Scroll down to our personal board again.*3player_name_92143487668576cb2bf3700
NekonyancerWe used to have 1 token of Fruit in our [blue]*basket*[/blue] here, but when we placed cheese on a Jam space, that Fruit was moved over to our [red]*Jam Charcuterie Board!*[/red]4fr-player-board-fruit-reserve-92143487668576cb2bf3700fr-player-board-fruit-reserve-92143487 7 fr-player-board-fruited-92143487 9 fr-player-board-jam-92143487 6
NekonyancerThere are also some *Fruited* cheese spaces on the main board. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edb976c2f1.59202269.jpg[/img] They work the exact same way as the Jam spaces: we need a Fruit token to place cheese on such a space, and if we do, the token will shift over to our [red]*Fruited Cheese Charcuterie Board!*[/red]5fr-player-board-fruited-92143487668576cb2bf3700fr-player-board-fruited-92143487 6
NekonyancerAt the end of the game, we'll score *Prestige* equal to the number of [red]*Fruited cheeses*[/red] we've made times the number of [blue]*Jammed cheeses.*[/blue] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edb98face7.90137008.jpg[/img]6fr-fruit-4-front668576cb2bf3700fr-player-board-fruited-92143487 6 fr-player-board-jam-92143487 7
NekonyancerNothing else we can do this turn. *Click on [red]"End Turn!"[/red]*7player_name_92143487668576cb2bf3710endTurn 16
Nekonyancer[green]Turn 4![/green] Our Hard cheese worker came back from the Bistro! Our Blue cheese worker came back from gathering Structure tokens!1fr-player-board-worker-reserve-92143487668576da6f03000
NekonyancerOur new quadrant gives us access to *Livestock* and the, uh, [blue]*"Villes"*[/blue] venue. (If you can call "Cities" a venue.)2fr-main-board-section-villes-help-button668576da6f03000fr-main-board-section-villes-help-button 7
NekonyancerAs you can see, there's a map of France on the board, featuring many famous French cities. Each city exerts influence on 1-3 *regions.* At the end of the game, each region will score Prestige for whoever has the most influence there. *Click on [blue]"Make Cheese!"[/blue]*3fr-main-board-section-villes-help-button668576da6f03010enterMakeCheese 16
Nekonyancer*Select Paris. Then [blue]confirm[/blue] your action!* (This will use our Hard cheese worker.)1fr-customer-4-front66857745576ce10fr-make-cheese-confirm-button 2
Nekonyancer*Great!* Paris straddles the blue and white regions of France. We now have 1 influence in each of those regions!1fr-worker-4-front6685774a1ade600
NekonyancerEach region has a large *token* on it indicating how much *Prestige* it is worth. According to the [blue]*Scoring Rubric,*[/blue] the dark brown token in the blue region is worth 5 Prestige for whoever has the most influence there at the end of the game. NekonyancerPlacing that 2-month-old Hard cheese in Paris was an especially good move because it allowed us to complete one of the two *Order cards* we got last turn! *Click on [blue]"Complete Ossau-Iraty"[/blue] at the top.*3fr-worker-4-front6685774a1ade610completeOrderCard31 16
NekonyancerNext, let's gather more Livestock! *Click on [blue]"Gather Resources."[/blue]*1enterGatherResources6685774dc8a8a10enterGatherResources 2
NekonyancerI don't want to tie up this worker for too long. *Just take 1 Livestock. Then confirm!*1fr-gather-resources-cancel-button668577563193d10
Nekonyancer*Finally, click on [red]End Turn![/red]*1endTurn668577586596210endTurn 1
Nekonyancer[green]Turn 5![/green] We're right back where we started, with access to *Fruit* and the *Bistro!* [green]At this point, I think you've seen enough![/green]1fr-main-board-section-bistro-help-button66857777ac98700
NekonyancerAt the end of any turn, if at least 1 player has placed all of their [blue]*Cheese Tokens,*[/blue] the game will end, and BGA will count up each player's total Prestige! 2fr-player-board-cheese-reserve-9214348766857777ac98700fr-player-board-cheese-reserve-92143487 7
Nekonyancer[blue]Your total Prestige is comprised of points from...[/blue] • The Bistro. • The Fromagerie. • The Festival. • The Villes. • Spent Fruit (Fruited cheese x Jammed cheese). • Completed Orders. • Specific structures that grant Prestige. • An additional 1 Prestige per 2 unused resources. [green]Whoever has the most Prestige wins![/green]3player_name_9214348766857777ac98700
NekonyancerRemember, if you need a reminder about how any of those scoring mechanics work, click on the big *"?"* in the corner to pull up the reference guide! Alternatively, click on the *"?"* above whichever venue you're confused about!4bga-help_buttons66857777ac98700
NekonyancerIf you're looking for more of a challenge, you might consider toggling *Advanced Mode* in the Lobby Options! In *Advanced Mode,* instead of starting with a prearranged set of 4 structures, you start with 4 random structure tiles. [green]Keep one, pass the rest to the next player, repeat.[/green]5player_name_9214348766857777ac98700
NekonyancerFinally, Fromage also offers a *Solo Mode.* In Solo Mode, the player plays against *"The Corporation."* Each turn, The Corporation draws a card and places a cheese on whatever space is indicated. If there are multiple available spaces that match the card, the player can choose a space for them. [green]For more details, check Page 8 of the rulebook.[/green]6player_name_9214348766857777ac98700
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Fromage!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message!
