MagentaBeyond the Sea of Mists lies *Alula*, a mysterious continent. The land regularly shifts and reforms itself, making any attempt at mapping it obsolete. The only way one can master Alula is by walking it, time and time again. Travel this ever-changing world, unveil its secrets and gain more fame than your competitors.1maintitlebar_content001
MagentaIn a game of Faraway, you play *Region* cards (the square cards) in front of you, *from left to right*. The game ends after *8 rounds* in which each player has played *8 Regions* (1 Region per round). A quick review of Region cards: On the top: Region number and Icons. In the middle: A Prerequisite. On the bottom: A scoring opportunity. All will be explained later.2maintitlebar_content000
MagentaThe goal of the game is to earn the most *Fame* (Victory Points). You can see the potential Fame of each *Region* in the bottom right corner of each card (see blue arrows). You can get specific details by hovering your mouse over each card (or tap & hold on your phone). But, since *Fame* is scored only at the end of the game, we will get into the specifics later on.3maintitlebar_content000fa_card_front_1 11 fa_card_front_3 11 fa_card_front_4 11 fa_card_front_5 11 fa_card_front_6 11 fa_target_2 11
MagentaLet's start by playing our first *Region*. We have 3 Regions in our hand. Click on the right most one to play it.1fa_target_5660bb4430fb7f10fa_target_5 6
MagentaGreat. This is our first Region of the total 8 Regions we would play in the course of the game. If you look at the top left corner of the Region we played, you can see the number *63*. Each region in the game has a unique number (from 1 to 68).1fa_card_front_5660bb4476427d00fa_card_front_5 1
MagentaThis is the Region played by the other player (Region 57). Playing a Region from your hand at the beginning of each round is done simultaneously by all players.2fa_card_front_7660bb4476427d00fa_card_front_7 2
MagentaNow we must take a Region to our hand. There are 3 Regions to choose from (displayed on the top row), but the other player has played a *lower numbered Region* (57<63) so they chose first and we are left with 2 Regions to choose from. Pick Region 22 to add to our hand.1fa_target_8660bb44b251a910fa_target_8 6
MagentaThat's it! That was the first round. Simple, right?1fa_card_front_3660bb45fd87df00
Magenta*Round 2* Now we play our second Region *to the right* of our first Region. *Note:* In order to understand which cards are best to play and in what order, it is necessary to fully understand the endgame scoring, but this would be much easier to explain when we get to the end. So for now, let's just play along. You'll understand everything by the end. Choose Region 22 from our hand to play it.1fa_target_12660bb46c1725810fa_target_12 6
MagentaNow we take another Region to our hand. This time *we* played the *lower numbered Region* (22<49), so we choose first. Choose Region 54 to add to our hand.1fa_target_15660bb4701b47610fa_target_15 6
Magenta*Round 3* This round, the number of the Region we are about to play (25) would be larger than our last played Region (22). This would trigger an *extra phase* for us, the *Sanctuaries* phase. Play Region 25 from our hand.1fa_target_21660bb49d9514c10fa_target_21 6
MagentaBut first, we must choose another Region to add to our hand. Pick Region 8.1fa_target_25660bb4b5a37be10fa_target_25 6
MagentaThese are the *Sanctuaries*, a new type of cards. Whenever you play a Region that has a higher number than the last Region you've played, you get to choose *1 Sanctuary*. The chosen Sanctuary does not go into your hand, it is placed on the table next to your played Regions.1fa_target_27660bb4c092fc100
MagentaThe number of *Sanctuaries* you can choose from is equal to the number of *Clue icons* visible on all the cards you've played plus 1. You can see these *Clue* icons on Regions 63 and 22 on the top of the card (looks like a map). Since we have 2 visible Clue icons we get 3 Sanctuary cards to choose from (2+1=3). !!! The icon at the bottom of Region 22 is not counted.2fa_card_front_3660bb4c092fc100
MagentaClick on the middle Sanctuary to play it.3fa_target_27660bb4c092fc110fa_target_27 6
MagentaThe other player played a Region with a smaller number than their last Region (14<49), so they don't get to choose a Sanctuary this round.1fa_card_front_15660bb4dc7ac2800
MagentaThat's all you need to know about the structure of each round. Let's *recap*: 1. Simultaneously play a Region from your hand to the right of the previous Region. 2. Choose a new Region to take to your hand. The player who played the lowest Region chooses first. 3. Choose 1 Sanctuary, but only if you played a higher Region than your last one. The number of cards you get to choose from is 1 plus the amount of Clue icons visible on your Regions and other Sanctuaries you've played. But, we are not ready to play yet, we still need to understand the endgame scoring. Let's fast-forward 5 more rounds to the end.2maintitlebar_content660bb4dc7df0f01
MagentaOk, so this is the end of round 8. All players have played *8 Regions from left to right*, and we also managed to play *4 Sanctuaries*. 1maintitlebar_content660bb6819e50f01
Magenta*Endgame Scoring* We flip (face-down) all the Regions and reveal (flip back up) only the right most one. Then we score the card that was revealed. Then we reveal the next Region and score it, and so on, until we score all 8 Regions. This way, each Region is scored while all the Regions to it's left are not visible and are not affecting the score. After that, we score all Sanctuaries. Note: Sanctuaries are not touched, and always stay face-up. Let's see how this process unfolds, then we'll explain further.2pagemaintitletext660bb6819e50f00
MagentaThe first Region that was scored was Region 12, but that Region doesn't have any scoring opportunities on it, so lets skip to the next one.1fa_card_front_41660bb6ad3807600fa_card_front_5 13 fa_card_front_3 13 fa_card_front_4 13 fa_card_front_19 13 fa_card_front_6 13 fa_card_front_25 13 fa_card_front_21 13 fa_card_front_8 13 fa_card_front_28 13
MagentaSecond Region to score was Region 58. This Region gives *3 Fame* for each visible *Clue* icon. Since all the Regions to the left of Region 58 are flipped and ignored at this point, we count only the *Clue* icons on Regions 58 and 12 and also on all the *Sanctuaries* (which always stay face-up). That is a total of 4 *Clue* icons, times 3, so *12 Fame*. 2fa_card_front_28660bb6ad3807600fa_card_front_5 13 fa_card_front_3 13 fa_card_front_4 13 fa_card_front_6 13 fa_card_front_21 13 fa_card_front_8 13 fa_card_front_28 11
MagentaBut wait! Region 58 also has a *Prerequisite*. You can see it right above the scoring details. There are *3 red Antler icons*. This means that you must have *3 visible Antler* icons at this point in order to score this card. If you don't, the score would be zero. Luckily we have *3 visible Antler* icons on our *Sanctuaries*, so we get the 12 points.3fa_card_front_28660bb6ad3807600fa_card_front_5 13 fa_card_front_3 13 fa_card_front_4 13 fa_card_front_6 13 fa_card_front_21 13 fa_card_front_8 13 fa_card_front_28 11
MagentaNext card, Region 54, would have scored us *16 Fame*, but we didn't manage to meet the *prerequisite* so we get *zero Fame*.4fa_card_front_8660bb6ad3807600fa_card_front_5 13 fa_card_front_3 13 fa_card_front_4 13 fa_card_front_6 13 fa_card_front_21 13 fa_card_front_8 11
MagentaRegion 43 gives *10 Fame* for each set of 4 different-colored face-up Regions. Region 43 is blue, 36 is red, 54 is green and 12 is yellow, so we get *10 Fame*. !!! Remember that you can see the scoring details of each card by hovering over it (or tap & hold on your phone).5fa_card_front_6660bb6ad3807600fa_card_front_5 13 fa_card_front_3 13 fa_card_front_4 13 fa_card_front_6 11
MagentaRegion 63 just gives a *flat 15 Fame* if you meet the *prerequisite*, which we did thanks to the pineapple-looking icon on Region 12. So playing Region 12 at the end actually earned us 15 Fame.6fa_card_front_5660bb6ad3807600fa_card_front_5 11
MagentaSome of the *Sanctuary* cards also have scoring opportunities on them. Since they are scored *last*, all the Regions are already face-up at this point, so all icons are visible and contribute to the scoring of the Sanctuaries.7fa_card_front_50660bb6ad3807600
MagentaOne last note: The number of each Region either has a yellow background with a sun icon (Daytime), or a blue background with a moon icon (Nighttime). These are only used for some scoring opportunities (see Region 14 below for example). !!! Don't forget to hover to see the details of each card. *That's it! You are ready to play the game! * *Good luck and have fun!*8fa_title_1660bb6ad3807601fa_card_front_15 11
