SpenserCode [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed864e6bf1.03995490.jpg[/img] In *Evolution*, players adapt their species in a dynamic ecosystem where food is scarce and predators lurk. *Traits* like Hard Shell and Horns will protect your species from Carnivores, while a Long Neck will help them get food that others cannot reach. [red]With over 4,000 ways to evolve your species, every game becomes a different adventure[/red].1player_board_95128415001
SpenserCode*Goal* --- *Gain the most points* by feeding your species, increasing their population, and evolving them to best ensure their survival. At the end of the game, players get points for: [green]*1. The food their species ate during the game*[/green] *2. The trait cards on their surviving species* [green]*3. The population of their surviving species*[/green]2overall_player_board_95128415000
SpenserCodeEach player begins the game responsible for a species, represented by the *[blue]board highlighted blue below[/blue]*. You might need to scroll to see it. At first, species are not unique or special in any way. *That changes when you assign traits to them*.3player_board_95128415000spec_board_95128415_2 2 spec_board_88709631_1 2
SpenserCodeA game of evolution is played over a variable number of rounds. There are *four phases* in each round. In those phases, you use the *multipurpose trait cards* to do various things. In *Phase One* players are dealt cards. Every player who does not have a species gets one free species. Each player is dealt 3 cards, plus 1 card for each species they have.4overall_player_board_95128415000
SpenserCodeIn *Phase Two*, each player selects a card to place in the watering hole. This determines how much food is added in phase 4. An amount of food equal to the number shown on the bottom right is added to the hole. In this instance 4. [blue]*Click on the highlighted card and then click on confirm up top.* [/blue] 5trait_cards_in_hand_item_8010buttonConfirmFoodCard 2 trait_cards_in_hand_item_8 2
SpenserCodeIn *Phase Three*, a player can play as many trait cards as they want or save them for later. There are three things a player can do (in any order) with each trait card in this phase. *[red]One thing you can do is add a trait to a species[/red]*. A species may not have any duplicate trait cards and may not have more than 3 traits unless it's a 2-player game, then the max is 2.1player_board_9512841565dfee2a533d100
SpenserCodeLet's add the Hard Shell trait to our species. [blue]*First click on the Hard Shell trait card to select it and then click on the highlighted section that appears above our species board (where the x is in the screenshot below).*[/blue] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed866a0025.16252481.jpg[/img]2trait_cards_in_hand_item_3365dfee2a533d110trait_cards_in_hand_item_33 2
SpenserCodeLet's add another. [blue]*First, click on the Foraging trait card to select it, and then click on the highlighted section that appears above our species board.*[/blue] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed868cefa1.41139506.jpg[/img]1trait_cards_in_hand_item_3565dfee4996f9410trait_cards_in_hand_item_35 2
SpenserCodeA second thing you can do is increase body size or population. Let's increase the population of our species. Population dictates how much food a species can consume. [blue]*First, click on the Fat tissue trait card and then click on the first empty square above population.*[/blue] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed86a95353.44230170.jpg[/img]1myhand_wrap65dfee50297a810trait_cards_in_hand_item_99 2
SpenserCodeLet's move on to the next phase. [blue]*Click on complete and then click confirm on the box that appears.*[/blue]1buttonCompletePlayTraitCards65dfee57d221510buttonCompletePlayTraitCards 2
SpenserCodeIn the *Fourth Phase*, food is added to the watering hole and we feed our species. How much food is added is determined by the cards that were added in phase two. *Players take turns taking food from the watering hole until all players have taken all the food they can or the watering hole is empty.*1wateringhole65dfee6368d2600
SpenserCodeLet's feed our species. [blue]*Click on the highlighted species board and then click confirm.*[/blue]1species_95128415_265dfeed39afee10buttonConfirmSelectSpeciesToFeed 2 spec_board_95128415_2 2
SpenserCodeNormally a *non-carnivore species* only gets *one food each time*, but since we had the Foraging trait, we got 2. You can hover over a card to read it more easily and better understand what it does. A non-carnivore is any species that doesn't have the carnivore trait. I'll explain carnivores in more detail later. I'm going to fast forward to the next round.1spec_board_95128415_265dfeedf4154800
SpenserCodeAdd the Fertile card to the watering hole. [blue]*Click on it and then click confirm.*[/blue] 1main_wrap65dff011eb6f510buttonConfirmFoodCard 2 trait_cards_in_hand_item_61 2
SpenserCodeLet's create another species. [blue]*Click on the highlighted Carnivore card and then click on the highlighted section that appears on the right end of our first species board.*[/blue] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed86c696c6.49537805.jpg[/img]1player_board_9512841565dff056997b710trait_cards_in_hand_item_69 2
SpenserCodeLet's give our new species the carnivore trait. [blue]*Click on the carnivore card and then click on the highlighted area that appears above our second species board.*[/blue] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed86e69574.01152685.jpg[/img]1player_board_9512841565dff061f33c310trait_cards_in_hand_item_91 2
SpenserCodeLet's increase the body size of our species. I'll explain what body size does later. [blue]*First, click on the Climbing trait card and then click on the first empty square above body size.*[/blue] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed87150135.54816454.jpg[/img]1player_board_9512841565dff067b94c110trait_cards_in_hand_item_36 2
SpenserCode*If you try to click on our species with the carnivore trait to feed it you will see that you are unable to.* Species with the carnivore trait cannot eat plant food. They feed by attacking other species. In order to attack another species a carnivore needs to: 1. have a bigger body size than that species and 2. be able to overcome any traits that species has been assigned1species_trait0_95128415_4_item_9165dff6ccd6dc200
SpenserCodeOur carnivore is unable to feed on any of our opponent’s species as they have the same body size. Even if we had a greater body size, both of their species have the * [red]Horns trait [/red]*, so we would lose one population for attacking. Since our species only has one population, it would die.2species_wrap_8870963165dff6ccd6dc200
SpenserCodeWhen you're unable to feed on one of your opponent's species you must feed on one of your own if you're able. In this instance, you can’t as our other species has a body size of 5 (it gains 4 from the Hard Shell trait). Our carnivore is unfortunately going to die out at the end of this turn. 3species_wrap_9512841565dff6ccd6dc200
SpenserCode*Our Carnivore died out and now we again only have one species*. I fed our other species for us. BGA has an option called auto feeding that I chose to disable for this tutorial. That option causes feeding to take place automatically in most circumstances. You can use it, as well as the quick play option, to speed up your games. Quick play allows players to carry out phase three simultaneously.1species_wrap_9512841565dff910475e600
SpenserCode*Let's go carnivore again*. I'm just going to go ahead and make the new species for us since at this point I'm sure you know how to do it.1player_board_9512841565dff9f27815200
SpenserCodeI went ahead and fed our first species for us. Let's feed the carnivore. [blue]*Click on the board of the species that has the carnivore trait.*[/blue]1species_wrap_9512841565dffacc9299a10spec_board_95128415_6 2
SpenserCode[blue]*Click on our opponent's species that has the Fertile trait and then click confirm at the top of the screen.*[/blue]1species_wrap_8870963165dffb788fcb210spec_board_88709631_5 2
SpenserCodeWe obtained food and the population of their species decreased by one. If there had been a food token at 3, when their population decreased that food would have been removed from the board and go towards contributing to our opponent's final score. 1spec_board_88709631_565dffb81832e800spec_board_88709631_5 2
SpenserCode* [red]A carnivore [/red]* would usually get food equal to the attacked species' body size when it feeds. However, since our population is 1 we only got 1 food instead of 2.2spec_board_95128415_665dffb81832e800
SpenserCode* [red]Additional Feeding Facts*[/red] *A species will feed until it has taken food equal to its population. At that point, it is full and can't take any more food unless a trait allows it to store food.* If a round ends with a species having *less food than the size of its population*, then its population decreases down to the first square that has a food token. If the round ended now, the population of this species would decrease from 2 to 1.3spec_board_88709631_565dffb81832e800
SpenserCodeIf the game were to end now the scores would be calculated as follows *Food*: Both (7) *Traits*: Both (3) *Population*: You (3) Opponent(4) [red]You would have 13 points and they would have 14[/red].1player_board_9512841565dffbc48b69f00
SpenserCode[red][tip][/red] It is important to remember that the number on the bottom right of the cards only determines how much food is added to the watering hole when that card is placed on it during phase 2 of the game. Each card counts as a single point towards a player's final score.2species_wrap_9512841565dffbc48b69f00
SpenserCodeFortunately for us, the game isn't about to end. *When the deck has to be shuffled during the deal cards phase, the last round begins*. A banner that says This is the final round will appear at the top of the screen at that point.3trait_cards_deck_item_665dffbc48b69f00
SpenserCodeOne last thing before I end the tutorial. *In Phase three it is also possible to remove cards*. You do so by clicking on a trait card that you have assigned to a species and then clicking remove at the top of the screen. [green]I hope you enjoy playing this great game.[/green]4player_board_9512841565dffbc48b69f00
