ElNSTElN*DVONN* is a stacking game. Both players start the game with *23 pieces* in their color which are randomly placed on the board - along with *3 neutral pieces* - the so called [red]*DVONN pieces*[/red]. In the course of the game you will discover that the [red]*DVONN pieces*[/red] play a very important role!1pagemaintitletext001
ElNSTElNThe *aim* of *DVONN* is to control as many *pieces* as possible by stacking them on top of each other. The topmost piece of any *stack* determines who owns the stack and thereby all the *pieces* in the stack. When no more moves can be made, the player who controls the *most pieces* wins the game.2pagemaintitletext001
ElNSTElNBefore jumping into the action let's just have a short look at the *settings* for *DVONN* by clicking the little [red]*cogwheel*[/red] on the right side. The *settings* can be opened and closed at any time during the game to change some ... settings. ;)3pagemaintitletext001gipf-settings 1
ElNSTElNThe click on the *cogwheel* should have opened the settings and revealed *7 additional buttons*. 3 of them are especially important for this tutorial: - [green]*Turn confirmation*[/green] - [blue]*Possible moves*[/blue] - [red]*Show coordinates*[/red] All of these settings should be set to [green]*On*[/green] and can be clicked repeatedly to toggle/cycle through the available options.4pagemaintitletext001gipf-confirm-move 3 gipf-button-panel-possible-moves 2 gipf-button-panel-show-coordinates 1
ElNSTElNLet's close the settings by clicking the *cogwheel* again and also have a quick look at the *board* itself. Using your mouse the board can be - [red]*tilted*[/red] by holding the *left mouse button* - [blue]*moved*[/blue] by holding the *right mouse button* - [green]*zoomed*[/green] by using the *mouse wheel* *But remember?* We promised *action*. [blue]So let's stack some pieces next![/blue]5pagemaintitletext001
ElNSTElNYou can move any piece with your color that is [red]*not completely surrounded*[/red] on all 6 sides. At the start of the game you can therefore only move a piece [green]*on the edge*[/green]. When you followed the settings step correctly all your moveable pieces should be marked with a [blue]*blue ring*[/blue].6pagemaintitletext001
ElNSTElNClick your *white* piece with the [blue]*blue*[/blue] ring on *I1*. The ring should change to [green]*green*[/green] and mark all possible targets with [blue]*blue*[/blue]. A *single piece* can move exactly *one space* in any direction, but only to an occupied space (i.e. on top of another piece or stack of any color). Click the *black* piece with the [blue]*blue*[/blue] ring on *J2*.7pagemaintitletext011
ElNSTElN*Well done!* You successfully made your first move. Click the [blue]*Confirm*[/blue] button to end you turn.1confirm_button6511f2902cd8410
ElNSTElNDid you see your opponents move? It was from *D1* to *D2*. But *don't worry* in case you missed it - or when you jump back into a turn based game where you even can't remember your own last move. ;) [green]*We got you covered!*[/green]1pagemaintitletext6511f29e9a8dc01
ElNSTElNIn the *upper left corner* you find the *move table* which shows every move made in this game so far. Click on the [green]*repeat moves button*[/green] to replay both yours and your opponents last move. [tip] On a *mobile device* where it's hard to hit that tiny little button, you can also tap anywhere on the [red]*red sections*[/red] of the board to trigger the same function. 2pagemaintitletext6511f29e9a8dc01gipf-move-history-play 3
ElNSTElNThe *move table* provides additional *buttons* for jumping between moves and you can also click on [green]*any row*[/green] in the table to jump directly to the situation after that specific move. [tip] Just play around a little bit with the *move table* when there are more moves displayed.3pagemaintitletext6511f29e9a8dc01
ElNSTElN*Enough talking*. Let's have some more action! Click continue and just enjoy watching a few moves of both you and your opponent.5pagemaintitletext6511f29e9a8dc01
ElNSTElNYour opponent just moved a *stack* of *2 pieces* from *D2* to *F4*. A stack must move *exactly as many spaces* as there are *pieces in the stack*. It may be moved in *any direction*, but always in a *straight line*. The move must end on an *occupied space*, but it is allowed to cross empty spaces. When making a move, each space must be counted, no matter whether it is empty or occupied.1gipf-move-history-play6511f2d273ef500
ElNSTElNNow is a good time to talk about the [red]*DVONN pieces*[/red] and why they are *important*. All *pieces* and *stacks* must somehow remain [green]*in contact*[/green] with at least one [red]*DVONN piece*[/red] - directly or linked through a *chain* of pieces. All *pieces* and *stacks* without contact are [red]*removed*[/red] from the board.1pagemaintitletext6511f2f8cc0f901
ElNSTElNLook at the *black* stack at *E2*. Your last *move* from *F2* to *F3* poses a threat for *black* since *F3* is the only remaining *link* that connects the *stack* at *E2* with the [red]*DVONN pieces*[/red]. If your *stack* at *F3* would ever move away, that would be the *end* for the *stack* at *E2*. [tip] Saving this *stack* by jumping away might be a good idea for *black*.2pagemaintitletext6511f2f8cc0f901
ElNSTElNYou've watched quit some moves now and might even have noticed the move where your opponent *restarted* a turn to make a different move. While you only moved *single pieces* so far, your opponent also moved *stacks*. [green]*Let's do this now, too!*[/green]1pagemaintitletext6511f3d4d449401
ElNSTElNClick your *stack* on *F3* right in the very *middle* of the board. Then click the *black piece* on *F1*.4pagemaintitletext6511f3d4d449411
ElNSTElNRemember talking about the *black* stack at *E2*? Your *stack* on *F3* was the last *link* that connected the *stack* on *E2* with the [red]*DVONN piece*[/red] on *K3*. With that *link* gone it's time to say *good bye* to this stack. [blue]*Bye, bye!*[/blue]2gameaction_status6511f41538e2601
ElNSTElNLet's watch some *more moves* and talk about the *game ending* afterwards.1pagemaintitletext6511f4172d4ab01
ElNSTElN[blue]*The game is almost over!*[/blue] All players *must* play for as long as they can do so. A player that can't move, will be *skipped*. The game *ends* when the *last move* is made. Let's move the *stack* from *J2* to *J4*!1pagemaintitletext6511f53099bd611
ElNSTElNThere's no *valid move* for *black* to make any more. *Black* has therefore been skipped and it's your turn again - with the last possible move from *E5* to *B2*.1restart_button6511f5368fdcb11
ElNSTElNBoth players can't move any more. The game is over! Click the [green]*Stack pieces button*[/green] on the top to put all *stacks* belonging to a player on top of each other. The player with the *highest stack* wins. If both players end up with an equal stack, it's a *tie*. [blue]*Congratulations, you win!*[/blue]1pageheader_gameview6511f53abdcfd01stack_button 3
ElNSTElNYou can still use the *move table* to *replay* the game or look at certain moves or board positions to get a clearer picture of the game. In addition to the *random setup* there's also the *standard setup* where players start with an *empty board* and place pieces alternatingly. But you'll figure that out on your own! [blue]Thanks for watching this *tutorial*.[/blue] Enjoy playing *DVONN*.2pageheader_gameview6511f53abdcfd01
