NekonyancerWelcome to *Dominoes,* a set of traditional tile-laying games! There are many different rulesets in the lobby. This tutorial will focus on the most common set, *"All Fives."* [green][tip] If you view this on a mobile device, you'll need to minimize many of these boxes by clicking on the *-* button in the top-right corner! I recommend using a computer instead![/green]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
NekonyancerA *domino* is a rectangular tile with a line through the middle and 0 to 6 pips on each end. Most games use a *double-six set,* which has 1 domino for every possible combination of pips, for a total of *28* unique dominoes. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed4a78f448.98904860.jpg[/img]2maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerEach player starts with *7/5/5* dominoes in their hand in a *2/3/4* player game. Players will take turns playing dominoes from their hand onto the table. When they do, all the [red]open ends[/red] on the table are added up. If they add up to a multiple of 5, the player earns points! [blue]It will make more sense soon.[/blue]3myhand_item_19000myhand_item_2 1 myhand_item_4 1 myhand_item_5 1 myhand_item_12 1 myhand_item_16 1 myhand_item_19 1 myhand_item_21 1
NekonyancerWe are the first player. There are no restrictions on what we start with, but it would be best if the two ends of the domino added up to a multiple of 5. [blue]*This one*[/blue] will work! 5 + 0 = 5, which is a multiple of 5. *Select [blue]this domino.[/blue]* You should be able to see a ghost of the selected domino on the table. *Click on the ghost to play the domino.*4maintitlebar_content010myhand_item_16 2
NekonyancerGood! BGA added up the two ends of the domino and got [blue]*5.*[/blue] That sum was then divided by *5* to get *1.* [red]We scored 1 point![/red]1end_sum_box654ad11c2ba3200end_sum_counter 2
NekonyancerBy the way, if the domino we placed is too small on your screen, you can use [red]*these buttons*[/red] or the *mouse wheel* to zoom in and out.2zoomout654ad11c2ba3200zoomin 1 zoomout 1
NekonyancerNow it's our opponent's turn. [blue]From now on, there are two placement restrictions:[/blue] *1.* Each domino must be placed end-to-end with a previously played domino. *2.* Touching domino ends must have the same number of pips. Let's see what our opponent plays.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment654ad11c2ba3200
NekonyancerThey played the [blue]*4/5*[/blue] domino! Note that the *5* end touches the *5* of the previously played domino. BGA added up all the open ends. Since the 5s are closed off, this time the [red]end pip sum[/red] is 4 + 0. Since that is NOT a multiple of 5, our opponent did not score any points.1domino_15_-1_0_1654ad147216b000domino_15_-1_0_1 2
NekonyancerOur turn again! This time, our placement options are far more limited. We can place a domino on the left with the *4* side touching, or a domino on the right with the *blank* side touching. We have [red]*three options.*[/red] Remember, we want the open ends to add up to a multiple of 5, if possible. [blue]Which domino should we play?[/blue]2page-title654ad147216b000myhand_item_5 1 myhand_item_12 1 myhand_item_19 1
Nekonyancer[blue]Definitely the 6/0![/blue] *Select the 6/0 domino. Place it on the right.*3variant_wrap654ad147216b010myhand_item_5 16
NekonyancerThe open ends (4 + 6) added up to [red]*10,*[/red] which is a multiple of 5. After dividing by 5, [red]we earned 2 points![/red]1end_sum_box654ad14c191ad00end_sum_counter 1
NekonyancerOur opponent played a [red]*double 6*[/red]. Doubles are always played *perpendicular* to normal dominoes. Both ends of the double domino are considered part of the open end. Our opponent's sum was (4 + 6 + 6). [red]No points for them![/red]1domino_27_2_0_0654ad15715c4d00domino_27_2_0_0 1
NekonyancerSince this is the first double domino played this round, BGA put a double arrow on it, marking it as [red]*the spinner.*[/red] After dominoes are placed on either side of it, the two vertical ends of the spinner will become available for domino placement. [blue]It's hard to explain with words, but you'll see how it works soon.[/blue]2domino_27_2_0_0654ad15715c4d00domino_27_2_0_0 1
NekonyancerIt's our turn again, and it looks like we only have one option. Luckily, it will result in a sum of *15,* so we'll score 3 points! [red]*Play the domino!*[/red]3maintitlebar_content654ad15715c4d10myhand_item_19 1
NekonyancerOur opponent played a domino on the other side of the spinner, so the spinner's other two legs opened up. If we had a 6, we could play it vertically, end-to-end with the spinner. Despite this, the spinner's numbers are *not* included in the pip sum.1domino_7_3_0_3654ad16d2c07200
NekonyancerI think you understand the placement rules now, so I'll start placing dominoes for you to speed things up. :)2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment654ad16d2c07200
NekonyancerOur opponent played a [blue]*6/3*[/blue] off of the spinner. Now there are *three* open ends, so the [red]*end pip sum*[/red] is (3 + 3 + 1).1end_sum_counter654ad19486f5200end_sum_counter 1 domino_23_2_-1_2 2
Nekonyancer[blue]*This domino*[/blue] changed direction, but this was done because in the real world, many people do not have a table long enough to accommodate 20+ dominoes placed end-to-end! On BGA, if we laid 20 dominoes down, we'd have to zoom very far out or keep scrolling back and forth. Using some vertical space gets around that. [red]It is not a reflection of a game rule or mechanic.[/red]1domino_13_-3_0_3654ad1ae933ca00domino_13_-3_0_3 2
NekonyancerOur opponent played [red]*another double domino.*[/red] Like the 6/6, it was played perpendicularly. Both 2s are now part of the open end. However, it will not create any new legs for dominos. There can only be [blue]*1 spinner.*[/blue]1domino_4_6_0_0654ad1b7a55fb00domino_27_2_0_0 2 domino_4_6_0_0 1
NekonyancerWe played our last domino, winning the round! This is called *"going out."* As a reward, BGA will count the pips on our opponents' unplayed dominoes, divide by 5, and round to the nearest whole number. [green]We'll earn that many points![/green] In this case, we have only 1 opponent, and he had only 1 domino left, with only 1 pip on it. 1 / 5 = .2 [blue].2 rounds to 0, so we didn't score any extra points for winning.[/blue] :(1maintitlebar_content654ad1bed8d1100
NekonyancerHere's another example. *Opponent #1:* 10 pips remaining. *Opponent #2:* 4 pips remaining. *(10 + 4) / 5 = 2.8* [blue]We would score 3 extra points![/blue]3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment654ad1bed8d1100
Nekonyancer[green]That's not the only way a round can end though![/green] *Close the Round end summary, then continue.*4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment654ad1bed8d1100
NekonyancerThis is the [blue]*Boneyard.*[/blue] When a player is unable to place a domino on the table, they must draw dominoes from the Boneyard until they find one they can play. If the Boneyard is exhausted and they still have nothing they can play, they must skip their turn. If everyone skips their turn, the round ends, even though no one "went out."7deck_wrap654ad1bed8d1100deck_wrap 2
NekonyancerIf that happens, whoever has the *fewest pips* in their hand wins the round. BGA will add up all the pips from their opponents, subtract the winner's pips, divide by 5, and round it off. The winner of the round will earn that many points. [blue]Here's an example:[/blue] *Neko1:* 4 pips. *Neko2:* 10 pips. *Neko 3:* 8 pips. (10 + 8 - 4) / 5 = 2.8. [green]Neko 1 would earn 3 extra points.[/green]8maintitlebar_content654ad1bed8d1100
NekonyancerYou saw one complete round. The game will continue as you've seen until at least one player reaches [green]30 points,[/green] immediately winning the game!9archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment654ad1bed8d1100
Nekonyancer[red]The last thing I have to mention is the lobby options![/red] *Game length:* You can choose Short (default) or Long. The exact length varies depending on the chosen ruleset. *Rule Set:* You can choose from 7 different variants of Dominoes! Each option is carefully labeled. You can also choose [blue]custom[/blue] to create your own variant!10archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment654ad1bed8d1100
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Dominoes!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! A big thank you goes out to *ufm* for bringing this game to BGA! Have fun! :D11archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment654ad1bed8d1100
