MelakyeWelcome to [red]*Cat in the Box*[/red], a trick-taking card game where you try to win the game by winning "*TRICKS*" of cards without causing paradoxes in the process.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
MelakyeThe game is played the number of rounds equal to the number of players. At the end of each round, we'll have a scoring phase. The player with the highest score at the end will win the game.2cib_round_num000
MelakyeAt the beginning of each round, players are dealt a hand of 10 cards (except only 9 cards in a 5-player game). The Cat Cards in the deck depend on the number of players in the game. 2 Players: 1-5 3 Players: 1-6 4 Players: 1-8 5 Players: 1-9 *There are always 5 copies of each number.* [tip] This bit of information is important. MelakyeBefore starting the round, each player must discard a single card out of the round. This is an important decision in forming your game strategy. MelakyeEach Round consists of multiple turns. During a turn, each player will play a single card from their hand. All the cards that were played during that turn will form what is called a "*TRICK*".1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment66529bb202f2600
MelakyeOne player will win the Trick each turn and it will score 1 point at the end of the round. (Unless you cause a Paradox, which is bad for you. We'll go more into that later.) MelakyeBefore beginning the round, each player must predict how many of the Tricks they think they will win. If they make a precisely correct prediction, they will score a bonus. (We'll talk about the bonus later too.)6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment66529bb202f2600

MelakyeTo summarize what I've covered earlier, in a 3-player game, the Cat Cards consist of number1-6 and there are 5 copies of each number. The whole deck had been evenly distributed among players after which each player discarded a single card.3cib_myhand_item_2466529bd29eba000
MelakyeEven though on first inspection, all the cats on the cards may seem like black cats to you, that is not the case. They're just in a dark box so it's hard to see. Each cat on the card is actually one of four colors; RED / BLUE / YELLOW / GREEN Just like the fate of Schrödinger's cat, the colors of these cats are uncertain until they are actually observed.4cib_myhand_item_2466529bd29eba000

MelakyeAfter everyone played a card, we check to see who won the Trick. Your opponent that played the Blue 6 cat won the Trick because she played the highest cat card of this Trick. MelakyeYour other opponent decided to play Red 1 cat. The thing about Red cats is that they're SUPER CATS. They will beat Cats of any other color regardless of the number on the card. (This is also known as the Trump Suit in trick-taking lingo.) So the Red 1 beat the Green 6. MelakyeSuper Cats have a restriction though. Red Cats cannot be played as the LED color until at least one other Red Cat has been played as a follow card in the previous turn. In another word, there has to be at least one token on the Red row for the Red Cat to be played as a LED color. MelakyeThere are slight rules differences when playing a 2-player game. Players do not predict how many Tricks they'll win. Instead, they get to score bonus points if they win 4 or fewer Tricks.
