Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed90283d60.52693442.jpg[/img] You and your friend know nothing of the Old World. Your thirst for knowledge drives you to explore ruins and landscapes that nature has long since reclaimed from Mankind. Who knows what you will find? [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerIn *Boreal,* you and your opponent spend compasses to buy Location cards from the supply. In addition to granting victory points and abilities, these tiles are used to construct a personal pyramid. The first player to complete their pyramid will trigger the end of the game. [green]Whoever has the most points wins![/green]2maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerAt the beginning of the tutorial, BGA asked you if you preferred a horizontal or vertical layout. For this tutorial, it is recommended that you use a *horizontal layout* because cards will be bigger and textboxes will align properly. [green]If you already selected vertical, I suggest you restart the tutorial and pick a horizontal layout.[/green]3maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerIn a real game, you can change the layout by clicking on the [red]*"hamburger"*[/red] in the top-right corner... [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed90474960.81728680.jpg[/img] And then selecting an option for [blue]*board layout.*[/blue] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed9065d5b1.02121564.jpg[/img]4maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerLet's jump into the rules. [blue]On our turn, we can choose one of two actions:[/blue] *- Choose and place* a card. *- Reserve* a card. We'll start with "Choose and place."5maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerAs you can see, there are eight cards on the board, but we can only choose cards that are *at* or to the *left* of our [red]*Exploration Counter,*[/red] which always starts the game at *5.*6my_pawn000my_pawn 1
NekonyancerOur opponent is sitting *across* from us, so their perspective is *reversed.* Thus, we have access to [red]*these cards...*[/red]7card_20000card_1 1 card_19 1 card_20 1 card_28 1 card_29 1 my_pawn 1
Nekonyancer... and our opponent has access to [blue]*these.*[/blue]8card_19000card_4 2 card_19 2 card_21 2 card_28 2 card_31 2 opponent_pawn 2
NekonyancerOur [red]*counter's*[/red] position also indicates how many 🧭 we have, which are used to buy cards. The 🧭 cost for each card is shown in the [green]*top-left corner:*[/green] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed9085b980.21650181.jpg[/img]9card_31000my_pawn 1
NekonyancerLet's buy [blue]*this card.*[/blue] It has the highest [green]*point value*[/green] of all the cards available to us! [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed909f2780.58401067.jpg[/img]10card_19000card_19 2
Nekonyancer*1. Click on "Choose and place" at the top.* *2. Select the 5-point card.* You should be able to see a ghost of the card down below. *3. Click on the ghost!* *4. [red]Confirm[/red] your action!*11player_name_11941354010btn_buy 17 card_19 18 level_0_11941354 19
Nekonyancer*Great!* The card is now in the [blue]*bottom level*[/blue] of our pyramid. This level can only accommodate 4 cards, in accordance with this diagram: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed90be0004.89587457.jpg[/img]1card_196612240f64fac00level_0_11941354 7
NekonyancerSince the card cost 3 🧭, our [red]*exploration counter*[/red] moved three spaces to the left. The card we took was immediately replaced with a [green]*new one.*[/green]3card_156612240f64fac00my_pawn 1 card_15 3
NekonyancerOkay, that's it for our action. At the end of our turn, we have a *Rest Phase.* In this phase, we will generate more 🧭. Most of it will come from the cards in our pyramid. In the [red]*top-right corner*[/red] of our card, we can see that it generates 1 🧭 per turn: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed90d6fc83.90082743.jpg[/img]4card_196612240f64fac00
NekonyancerThe total 🧭 generated by all our cards is shown [blue]*here.*[/blue]5nextIncome_119413546612240f64fac00nextIncome_11941354 7
NekonyancerWe can also earn some extra 🧭 from our [red]*exploration counter's*[/red] position: • +2 🧭 for ending a turn on 0. • +1 🧭 for ending a turn on 1. [blue]Unfortunately, since our counter is on 2, we won't get any extra 🧭![/blue]6my_pawn6612240f64fac00my_pawn 1
NekonyancerGreat! Now it's our opponent's turn!7archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6612240f6626c00
Nekonyancer[blue]Next turn![/blue] *1. Select "Choose and place."* *2. Select the indicated card.* You should be able to see *two* ghosts in our pyramid this time. That's because, from now on, cards must be placed *adjacent* to existing cards. *3. Place the card on the right!* *4. [red]Confirm[/red] your action!*1player_name_11941354661235881675b10btn-confirm 20 card_20 18
Nekonyancer[blue]You're doing great![/blue] Let's learn about the *Reserve* action now.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment661235bb2b78800
Nekonyancer*Reserving* will allow us to take a card from *anywhere* on the board, no matter where our Exploration Counter is. We won't have to pay any 🧭 either! However, instead of going into our pyramid, the card will go into our [blue]*Reserve area.*[/blue] We'll have to spend 🧭 later to buy the card from there.2maintitlebar_content661235bb2b78800reserve_11941354 7
NekonyancerLet's try it! *1. Click on "Reserve."* *2. Select the indicated card.* *3. Click on the ghost that appeared in our Reserve Area.*3player_name_11941354661235bb2b78810btn_reserve 17 card_15 18 reserve_11941354 19
NekonyancerLet's play through 1 more turn together. *1. Click on "Choose and place."* *2. Select the card in our Reserve Area.* As you can see, we now have the option of placing a card on the 2nd level of our pyramid. This can only be done if there are *two cards* under it. *3. Place the card on the 2nd level.* *4. [red]Confirm![/red]*1player_name_119413546612360b1359810btn-confirm 20 level_1_11941354 19 card_15 18
Nekonyancer[red]Hmm... this may have been a mistake.[/red] Whenever a card is put on a high row, the cards directly under it stop generating 🧭! Our 🧭 generation is down to just [blue]*+1*[/blue] now! (Plus another 1 from our [red]*counter's*[/red] position.)1nextIncome_1194135466123643646d100my_pawn 1 card_36 16 nextIncome_11941354 2
NekonyancerNext, if you look carefully at the card we played, you'll see that it has a special effect icon next to its point value. It allows us to discard a card from the board. Neat! *Select the indicated card. Then click on [blue]"Confirm."[/blue]* 2card_1566123643646d110card_21 16
NekonyancerJust one last thing to mention. Each card has a *color* icon in the top-left corner that can affect the victory point value of other cards. For example, [blue]*this card*[/blue] is worth 2 points per red card in our pyramid - like [red]*this one.*[/red] [green][tip] If you're confused about any of these icons, you can hover over any card for more information![/green]1card_766123649efdb400card_7 2 card_25 1
Nekonyancer[blue]Okay, that's everything![/blue] The game will continue as you've seen until someone completes a 4-level pyramid and both players have had the same number of turns. [green]Whoever has the most points wins![/green]2maintitlebar_content66123649efdb400
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Boreal!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! Big thank yous go out to *Masafumi Mizuno* for designing this game, *Spiral Éditions* for publishing, and *firgon* for bringing it to BGA! Have fun! :D3maintitlebar_content66123649efdb400
