Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edba088327.53432309.jpg[/img] King Manuel I has commissioned Portugal's greatest artisans to construct a magnificent summer pavilion for his family! Nothing short of masterwork will do for his majesty, but you are up to the task. [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerIn *Azul: Summer Pavilion,* players will take turns taking tiles from several factory displays. Once all the tiles have been taken, players will spend those tiles to place specific ones onto their personal boards, scoring points! Players can acquire bonus tiles by *surrounding* specific spaces on their board and earn bonus points by completing specific sets of tiles. [green]After 6 rounds, whoever has the most points wins![/green]2maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerThe *Factory Displays* I mentioned earlier are beautifully patterned blue-and-orange discs. There are *5/7/9* displays in a *2/3/4* player game, always arranged in a circle. [green]This tutorial showcases a 2-player game, so there are 5 displays.[/green]3maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerAs you can see, there are *exactly four* tiles on each display. On our turn, we must select all tiles of *one non-wild color* on one display and move them to our inventory. If there are any Wild tiles on the display, we must take one of them too. Any remaining tiles will be moved to the center of the display circle.4maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerFor example, the *rightmost* display has 1 purple tile, 1 orange tile, and 2 red tiles. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edba29a609.13885258.jpg[/img] We must take all tiles of *one type,* but we can't choose purple. That's because - as it shows at the top of the screen - purple is the [blue]*Wild color.*[/blue]5maintitlebar_content000summary 2
NekonyancerInstead, the purple tile will simply tag along when we take another color. [blue]We have two options for that display, then:[/blue] - Take the orange and the purple. - Take both reds and the purple. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edbb451c08.59003979.jpg[/img]6maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerTaking 2 reds and a purple sounds like a great first turn to me! *Click on this [red]red tile![/red]*8tile106010tile106 16
Nekonyancer*Great!* The purple and reds were moved to our [blue]*inventory*[/blue] (you may need to scroll down to find it). All remaining tiles (the orange tile) were moved to the center of the table. [red]Next, it's our opponent's turn to take tiles![/red]1tileCount3669479cba35d800player-hand-11941354 7
NekonyancerOur opponent took just one tile from a display. The other three tiles on it were moved to the center. [blue]Now it's our turn again![/blue]1tileCount2669479e795fc400
NekonyancerInstead of taking tiles from another display, let's take from the center this time! It mostly works the same as taking from a display - we must take all tiles of a single color, plus one of the Wild color (if there are any). [blue]The only difference is the 1st Player Tile:[/blue] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edba47be31.27270750.jpg[/img]2maintitlebar_content669479e795fc400
NekonyancerThe first player to take tiles from the middle must also take the 1st Player Tile. They will then [red]lose points[/red] equal to the number of *colored tiles* - tiles other than the 1st Player Tile - that they pick up that turn!3tileCount2669479e795fc400
NekonyancerGoing first is usually a good trade for a point or two. Let's do it! *Click on this [red]red tile![/red]*4tile18669479e795fc410tile18 16
Nekonyancer*Good!* As you probably guessed, taking the 1st Player Tile will make us the first player next round! Now that it has been claimed, players can take from the center with no penalty.1tileCount3669479f0c05b100
NekonyancerNext turn! Let's take the green tiles from the middle. *Click on this [green]green tile![/green]*1tile11066947a265fd0c10tile110 16
NekonyancerOkay, I think you got the hang of it. Players will continue taking tiles in this way until *all* the tiles have been taken. [blue]I'll fast-forward to that point now.[/blue]1maintitlebar_content66947a2fe2db400
NekonyancerOkay, all the tiles were taken, so the Factory Displays were cleared away. Your screen should look like this now, with the *scoring board* on the left and our *personal board* on the right: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edba66bcb4.47973060.jpg[/img] If it doesn't, *zoom out* until it does!1maintitlebar_content66947a698d17c00
NekonyancerAgain, this is our [blue]*inventory,*[/blue] containing all the tiles that we acquired in the first phase. On our turn, we must spend some tiles to place one of the spent tiles on a slot on our board.2player-hand-1194135466947a698d17c00player-hand-11941354 7
NekonyancerAs you might expect, tiles can only be placed onto slots of the same color - reds on reds, blues on blues, etc. The *number* on each slot indicates how many matching tiles are required to place one there.3player-table-11941354-star-3-space-366947a698d17c00
NekonyancerFor example, if we had 7 blue tiles, we could spend 6 of them to place 1 of those 6 on the Blue 6 slot. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edbaad5130.21805785.jpg[/img] We'd have 1 blue tile left after that.4player-table-11941354-star-4-space-466947a698d17c00
NekonyancerLet's start with our red tiles. *Click on the Red "3" slot!*5player-table-11941354-star-3-space-366947a698d17c10
NekonyancerBGA now wants to know how many red tiles and how many Wild tiles we want to use for this. There is no limit to how many Wilds we can use at once, but *at least one* of the spent tiles must be the *correct color.*1playTile1_button66947a7cd65b000
NekonyancerLet's hang onto our Wilds for now. *Click on the left button to spend [red]3 red tiles![/red]*2playTile0_button66947a7cd65b010playTile0_button 1
Nekonyancer*Great!* Whenever we place a tile, we gain 1 point, plus 1 for each *connected* (adjacent) tile of the same color. Tiles that are adjacent to the adjacent tile are considered connected as well. In this case, we just gained 1 point. [blue]Now it's our opponent's turn![/blue]1player_name_1194135466947a8fe529f00
NekonyancerNext, let's fill in the slot next to the last one. We only have 1 red tile left, so this will automatically use one of our Wild tiles (purple). *Click on the [red]Red 2 slot![/red]*1player-table-11941354-star-3-space-266947aa0bfb9f10
NekonyancerGreat! We earned 2 points that time - 1 for the tile we placed, and another 1 for being *connected* to another tile.1player_name_1194135466947b3443cf000
NekonyancerNext, let's learn about the center star. There are no tiles that share this star's color. You can think of it as a *Wild* star. Tiles of any color can be placed in any of the Wild star's slots, but only if that color is not yet present in the star. [blue]As usual, the tiles we spend must be the same color (or wild).[/blue]1player_name_1194135466947b3c68d7000
NekonyancerLet's try it! *Click on the Wild 2 slot!*2player-table-11941354-star-0-space-266947b3c68d7010
NekonyancerNow BGA wants to know what color we want to place on that slot. *Click on [blue]Blue![/blue]*1chooseColor5_button66947b7851bf910chooseColor5_button 2
NekonyancerFinally, BGA wants to know how many blue tiles and Wild tiles we want to use for this. *Click on the right button to spend [blue]1 Blue[/blue] and 1 Wild!*1playTile1_button66947b812034a10playTile1_button 2
NekonyancerGood! We earned *1* point for that. Even though the tip of the tile is almost touching the tip of a red one, that doesn't count as being connected.1player_name_1194135466947b9d5613100
NekonyancerNext, let's learn about the *white* spaces on our board. We can't place tiles on any of them, but we can *surround* them. When we do, we can take some bonus tiles from the scoring board!1player-table-11941354-star-0-space-166947ba49753a00
NekonyancerWe've almost surrounded one of the white spaces already! We just have to fill the Wild 1 slot. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edbac79e35.25092597.jpg[/img] We can't use blue for this because we used blue on another Wild slot. Looks like all we can use is green! *Click on the Wild 1 slot!*2maintitlebar_content66947ba49753a10
Nekonyancer*Great! We surrounded it!* Each white space has one of three different icons on it - *[red]pillar,[/red] [blue]statue,[/blue]* or *[green]window.[/green]* According to the images on the side of the Scoring board, pillars grant 1 tile when surrounded, statues grant 2, and windows grant 3.1round-space-166947bafecf0900bonus-info-1 1 bonus-info-2 2 bonus-info-3 3
NekonyancerWe just surrounded a *pillar* space, so we can take any *1* tile on the board! *Select this [red]red tile.[/red] Then click on "Take [red]♦️[/red]*" at the top!2tile12966947bafecf0910takeBonusTiles_button 1 tile129 16
NekonyancerOur opponent ran out of tiles to play, so they passed. We can continue taking as many turns as we like until we pass as well. Let's place the bonus tile we acquired. *Click on the [red]red 1 slot![/red]*1player-table-11941354-star-3-space-166947bcd74e8310
NekonyancerLet's see. We have [blue]*4 tiles left*[/blue] - 3 green and 1 blue. We don't have to play them this round if we don't want to. We can *store* up to 4 tiles from round to round on the corners of our board. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edbae412b2.76520676.jpg[/img]1player-hand-1194135466947bd30fa0500player-hand-11941354 7
NekonyancerThere's a [blue]*statue*[/blue] space between our red star and blue star, and it's already half-surrounded. I think we should save our blue tile for that. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edbb07ca15.85419701.jpg[/img] Again, surrounded [blue]*statues*[/blue] grant 2 bonus tiles.2player-hand-1194135466947bd30fa0500bonus-info-2 2
NekonyancerAs for the green tiles, I think we should hold onto them as well. There's a [blue]*Round Tracker*[/blue] at the top of the Scoring Board. It shows that green tiles will be *Wild* next round!3round-space-366947bd30fa0500round-counter 2
NekonyancerSince we don't want to play anything else this round, we must Pass. *Click on [blue]"Pass"[/blue] at the top!*4pass_button66947bd30fa0510pass_button 2
Nekonyancer[blue]Welcome to Round 2![/blue] BGA refilled the Factory Displays with tiles from [red]*this bag.*[/red] When the bag runs out of tiles, BGA will refill it with all the tiles that were spent (but not placed on boards) up until that point. The supply of bonus tiles on the Scoring Board was restocked as well.1bag66947bdec3b5e00bag 6
NekonyancerRemember, we took the *1st Player Tile* during the first round, so we have to go first. [blue]Take a look around. Do you see a good first turn for us?[/blue]2maintitlebar_content66947bdec3b5e00
NekonyancerWe need more blue tiles to finish our half-surrounded statue. This display will give us 2 blues, along with a Wild (green)! *Click on this tile!*3tile8966947bdec3b5e10tile89 16
Nekonyancer[green]Okay, I think you've seen enough of the gameplay![/green] The game will continue for a total of *six rounds.* After the sixth round, some final important bonuses are awarded. *Scroll down to the Scoring Board before you continue.*1maintitlebar_content66947c06e4ef200
NekonyancerEach player receives points for any star that they *completed,* filling every slot in it. Each star has a different point value. They're all shown along the right side of the Scoring Board. [green]For example, if we complete our red star, we'll score an extra 14 points.[/green]2maintitlebar_content66947c06e4ef200
NekonyancerEach player also receives points for filling all the *1/2/3/4* spaces on their board. The points for these achievements are shown in the bottom-right corner of the Scoring Board. [green]For example, if we fill all the *3* spaces on our board, we'll score 12 bonus points.[/green]3maintitlebar_content66947c06e4ef200
NekonyancerFinally, any players with leftover tiles on the corners of their board [red]lose 1 point per tile.[/red] Once those bonuses (and penalties) are taken into account, [green]whoever has the most points wins![/green]4maintitlebar_content66947c06e4ef200
NekonyancerOnce you have some experience with the normal game mode, you might want to try the *Variant,* in which each player uses a *monochrome* board! [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edbb210c20.77728228.jpg[/img]5maintitlebar_content66947c06e4ef200
NekonyancerEach star on the Monochrome board can either be a *single-colored star* - in which every space is the same color - or a *multi-colored star* - in which every space is a different color. Each player can choose what to make each star as they play through the game. It is possible to make two single-colored stars of the same color.6maintitlebar_content66947c06e4ef200
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Azul: Summer Pavilion!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! Big thank yous go out to *Michael Kiesling* for designing the game, *Plan B Games* for publishing, and *thoun* for bringing it to BGA! Have fun! :D7maintitlebar_content66947c06e4ef200
