Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed6715d310.15659122.jpg[/img] You are the ancient builders of this world, the last survivors of the civilization before ours. You are now the only holders of this multi-millennial knowledge. Leave your mark on history through stone and traditions and protect this *Ancient Knowledge.* [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]2maintitlebar_content65a5ec929748800
NekonyancerIn *Ancient Knowledge,* players will take turns playing *Monuments* into their *Timeline.* Each one comes with *Knowledge* tokens on it. To avoid losing points, you'll have to archive as much knowledge as you can before the monuments crumble away! Players can also create *Artifacts* and learn *technologies* to gain a myriad of helpful effects. When one player has 14 monuments in their past, the game ends, and [green]whoever has the most points wins![/green]3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment65a5ec929748800
NekonyancerOn your turn, you must perform *two actions.* You can see all the possible actions at the top of the screen: *Create, Learn, Archive, Excavate,* and *Search.* [blue]You may perform the same action twice, if you want.[/blue]4actChooseAction_archive_button65a5ec929748800actChooseAction_create_button 2 actChooseAction_learn_button 2 actChooseAction_archive_button 2 actChooseAction_search_button 2
Nekonyancer[blue]Let's start with the *Create* action.[/blue] *Create* allows us to play a card from our [red]*hand*[/red] onto our board. As you can see, we started the game with six cards in our hand. The three purple cards on the left are *Artifacts.* The three on the right are *Monuments.*5builder-card-A9_Tzolkin-front65a5ec929748800player-table-11941354-hand 1
NekonyancerWhenever we create a Monument, it goes onto our *Timeline.* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed67431559.74732105.jpg[/img] There are two *icons* in the top-left corner of every monument card. The first one shows what *kind/color* of monument it is. The second one shows the monument's *starting space* on the Timeline.6builder-card-P34_PyramidsOfPlaineMagnien-front65a5ec929748800
NekonyancerFor example, this particular monument is [green]green,[/green] and it starts in *Space 2* on the Timeline. [green]Let's *Create* it![/green]7builder-card-P34_PyramidsOfPlaineMagnien-front65a5ec929748800
NekonyancerFirst, you'll have to click on the [red]*Create*[/red] button, but these buttons are buggy in Tutorial Mode. [red]I'll just click on it for you...[/red]8actChooseAction_create_button65a5ec929748800actChooseAction_create_button 1
NekonyancerNext, we have to select a card to create. *Select the Pyramids of Plaine Magnien. Then continue.*1builder-card-P34_PyramidsOfPlaineMagnien-front65a5ecc630fc100
Nekonyancer[red]Finally, we have to choose a space for it.[/red] If you scroll down, you'll see our board. The six flashing card spaces above it make up our *Timeline.* The card we selected normally starts in Space 2 on the Timeline, but we can discard *X* cards to shift it by *X* spaces. The number on each space shows how many extra cards we'll have to discard to place the monument there. [green][tip] Some cards do not allow you to shift the placement and must be placed in a specific slot.[/green]2player-table-11941354-timeline65a5ecc630fc100
NekonyancerI think the normal space is fine. *Click on the second space* (the space without a number in it) *to place the card there!*3player-table-11941354-timeline65a5ecc630fc110
Nekonyancer[blue]Excellent! Our monument has been created![/blue] We still have another action this turn, so let's create another monument!1builder-card-P34_PyramidsOfPlaineMagnien-front65a5ecccad24b00
Nekonyancer[blue]But first, let me tell you more about them.[/blue] Each monument has a horizontal colored line with two icons on it. The one on the left indicates the monument's *Initial Knowledge.* The one on the right shows the card's *Victory Point* value. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed6765d714.15936879.jpg[/img] [red]Chabola de la Hechicera has 3 Initial Knowledge and a VP value of 1.[/red]2builder-card-M26_ChabolaDeLaHechicera-front65a5ecccad24b00
NekonyancerSome monuments will also require you to [red]discard some cards,[/red] regardless of where you place them on the Timeline. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed67e3a832.95722719.jpg[/img]3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment65a5ecccad24b00
NekonyancerChabola de la Hachicera seems like a good option for us. [red]First, I'll click on Create for you...[/red]4actChooseAction_create_button65a5ecccad24b00actChooseAction_create_button 1
Nekonyancer*Next, select Chabola de la Hechicera...*1builder-card-M26_ChabolaDeLaHechicera-front65a5ecdfa2d6a00
NekonyancerNote that the space *above* our previously played monument is now available for placement. [blue]We can only place cards in the upper row of our timeline if the corresponding space in the lower row is already occupied![/blue]2player-table-11941354-timeline65a5ecdfa2d6a00
NekonyancerI don't think we want to discard extra cards, so *place Chabola de la Hechicera in its normal space: Space 6.* [red]It's all the way to the right![/red]3player-table-11941354-timeline65a5ecdfa2d6a10
Nekonyancer[red]Great![/red] Remember, this card comes with 3 Initial Knowledge, so *3 Knowledge tokens* were placed on it after we played it. We'll want to get rid of these knowledge tokens before too long; [red]otherwise, we'll lose points![/red]1builder-card-M26_ChabolaDeLaHechicera-front65a5ece7f341300
NekonyancerThat was our second action, so our turn is over. At the end of each player's turn, BGA will execute a *Timeline phase,* shifting all of that player's monuments over by one space!2builder-card-M26_ChabolaDeLaHechicera-front65a5ece7f341300
NekonyancerOkay, now it's our opponent's turn!1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment65a5eceb7aa4b00
Nekonyancer[red]Time for our second turn![/red] We have another monument we can create, but first I need to teach you about *effects* - the text portion at the bottom of each card.1builder-card-M16_DiquisStoneSpheres-front65a5ecfa57fe900
NekonyancerEvery card's effect is unique. For example, *Diquis Stone Spheres'* effect allows us to CREATE 1 artifact. [tip][green] The word "CREATE" is in all capital letters because it counts as a normal create action, which can trigger effects from some cards![/green]2builder-card-M16_DiquisStoneSpheres-front65a5ecfa57fe900
NekonyancerDo you see the small *lightning bolt icon* just above the text area? [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed67858552.10681110.jpg[/img] As you may have already guessed, it indicates that the effect triggers *immediately* when the card is played.3builder-card-M16_DiquisStoneSpheres-front65a5ecfa57fe900
NekonyancerChabola de la Hechicera, which we played last turn, has an *infinity icon* instead of a lightning bolt. That means the effect can trigger any time a [blue]condition[/blue] is met. In this case, the [blue]condition[/blue] is *creating an artifact.* [red]Can you feel the engine warming up?[/red]4builder-card-M26_ChabolaDeLaHechicera-front65a5ecfa57fe900
NekonyancerLet's create the Diquis Stone Spheres. [red]First, I'll click on Create for you...[/red]5actChooseAction_create_button65a5ecfa57fe900actChooseAction_create_button 1
Nekonyancer*Next, select the Diquis Stone Spheres and place them on Space 2!*1builder-card-M16_DiquisStoneSpheres-front65a5ed150818510
Nekonyancer[red]Great![/red] Now we have to resolve the Spheres' effect, which is to CREATE an artifact. Artifacts can be CREATED just like monuments can, but instead of going into our Timeline, they go into the [red]*slots on our board.*[/red] You might have to scroll down to see them. *Click on "Create an artifact" at the top!*1builder-card-M16_DiquisStoneSpheres-front65a5ed1a87cd210btnChoice0 16 player-table-11941354-artifacts 6
Nekonyancer[blue]Great![/blue] Now we have to select an artifact to play. *Click on Tzolk'in!*1builder-card-A9_Tzolkin-front65a5ed1dd13b810
Nekonyancer[blue]Okay, Tzolk'in is now on our board![/blue] Creating it triggered [red]Chabola de la Hechicera's[/red] effect, which lets us discard a Knowledge token [green](that's a good thing)[/green] and draw a card!1builder-card-A9_Tzolkin-front65a5ed22646fc00
Nekonyancer*The Spheres* and *Chabola* both have knowledge tokens on them. It's generally a good idea to remove tokens from whichever monuments are *furthest to the left.* *Click here to remove a token. Then confirm your action at the top!*2builder-card-M16_DiquisStoneSpheres-front65a5ed22646fc10confirmDiscardTokenSelection_btn 18 M16_DiquisStoneSpheres-token-counter-remove-btn 17
NekonyancerWe still have one more action this turn. Let's create another artifact the normal way. [red]First, I'll click on Create for you...[/red]1actChooseAction_create_button65a5ed29980b400
Nekonyancer*Click on Ica Stones to create them!*1builder-card-A5_IcaStones-front65a5ed4772e2410
NekonyancerWe triggered Chabola's effect again! *Remove another token from the Spheres.*1builder-card-M16_DiquisStoneSpheres-front65a5ed4b69adb10confirmDiscardTokenSelection_btn 18 M16_DiquisStoneSpheres-token-counter-remove-btn 17
Nekonyancer[blue]We took two actions, so our cards are about to slide to the left.[/blue] But now we have cards with *Hammer icons,* which activate during the Timeline phase, just before our cards slide over. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed67a2ab40.95516141.jpg[/img]1builder-card-A9_Tzolkin-front65a5ed5051d5700
NekonyancerBGA wants to know if we want to use them... but we actually can't. We don't meet either of our artifacts' activation conditions. :( [blue]We probably can next turn though![/blue] *Click on "Pass" at the top!*2builder-card-A9_Tzolkin-front65a5ed5051d5710btnChoice99 16
Nekonyancer[blue]Hm? What's happening now? Why aren't our cards sliding?[/blue] *Oh!* It's because the *Pyramids of Plaine Magnien* are about to *go into decline;* that means they're going to slide off our board. They have a *Ruins icon,* which means their effect activates when they go into decline! [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed67c6d343.73938223.jpg[/img]1builder-card-P34_PyramidsOfPlaineMagnien-front65a5ed5e0ec9600
Nekonyancer[blue]The Pyramids' effect lets us draw *8* cards and keep *1.*[/blue] Scroll up and take a look at the cards we drew. Think about the cards we've played and the cards we have in our hand. [red]Which card do you think we should keep?[/red]2builder-card-C12_Timbuktu-front65a5ed5e0ec9600
Nekonyancer[blue]Personally, I think the *Voynich Manuscript* is a very strong card for us.[/blue] Drawing more cards is very important, and if we find ourselves with too many cards, we can simply play the *Planetary Stone* from our hand and feed our extra cards to it. [green][tip] "Too many cards" is exactly 10. If we have 10 cards in our hand, we can't draw any more.[/green]3builder-card-A19_VoynichManuscript-front65a5ed5e0ec9600
NekonyancerAlright, we finished resolving the [blue]Pyramids of Plaine Magniens'[/blue] effect, so all our cards slid over, and the [blue]Pyramids[/blue] went into decline. *Scroll down to our board.* As you can see, the card is now sitting to the left of our board. This area is called *"our past."*1maintitlebar_content65a5edab70b2400
Nekonyancer[blue]It's a good thing the Pyramids didn't have any Knowledge tokens on them![/blue] Whenever a monument moves into our past, all the knowledge tokens on it are moved to [red]*this area*[/red] on our board. They also change into *Lost Knowledge tokens.*2player-table-11941354-lost-knowledge65a5edab70b2400player-table-11941354-lost-knowledge 6
NekonyancerEach *Lost Knowledge token* is worth [red]minus 1 point[/red] at the end of the game, so we usually [tip] want to avoid them. [tip][green] Some cards have effects that can only activate if you have a certain number of Lost Knowledge tokens![/green]3player-table-11941354-lost-knowledge65a5edab70b2400player-table-11941354-lost-knowledge 6
Nekonyancer*Turn 3!* It's time to *learn* about *learning!* [green][tip] Many studies show that students learn more effectively when they've learned how to learn more effectively![/green] Stop laughing. That's not a joke. I studied educational psycholo-- [red]Why are you laughing harder?[/red]1technology-tile-T22_AncientGreek-front65a5edb63216400
NekonyancerIf we use the [red]*Learn*[/red] action, we can take an available *technology card* and trigger its effects. The cards on [blue]*"Ⅰ" boards*[/blue] grant *instant* helpful effects. Some of them, like Anaximenes, have *requirements.* [red]If we don't meet the requirements, we can't take the card![/red]2table-technology-tiles-265a5edb63216400actChooseAction_learn_button 1 table-technology-tiles-1 2 table-technology-tiles-2 2
NekonyancerThe cards on the [green]*Ⅱ board*[/green] provide end-game victory points. They *always* have requirements. When one player has *7* monuments in their past, marking the middle of the game, that player must replace one of the *Ⅰ* boards with another *Ⅱ* board.3table-technology-tiles-365a5edb63216400table-technology-tiles-3 3
NekonyancerAs you can see, technology cards come in three different types/colors, but they all work the same way. [green][tip] Some card effects synergize with only a specific color of technology card![/green]4technology-tile-T22_AncientGreek-front65a5edb63216400
NekonyancerNow then, let's take the [red]*Learn*[/red] action, and... [red]Wait. Aren't we forgetting something?[/red] 5actChooseAction_learn_button65a5edb63216400actChooseAction_learn_button 1
NekonyancerWe should play the *Voynich Manuscript* first so we get more value from our *Learn* action! [red]I'll click on create for you...[/red]6builder-card-A19_VoynichManuscript-front65a5edb63216400
Nekonyancer*Now play the Manuscript!*1builder-card-A19_VoynichManuscript-front65a5edcb90a6b10
NekonyancerDon't forget to trigger [red]Chabola[/red] again! *Remove another token from the Spheres.*1maintitlebar_content65a5edccb4d9e10
NekonyancerTime to hit the books! [red]I'll select the Learn action for you...[/red]1actChooseAction_learn_button65a5edcfb0ef900actChooseAction_learn_button 1
NekonyancerWe want to take one of the *yellow* cards so the *Manuscript* will activate. *Click on Earthquake Engineering!* [red]Shoot. This step is buggy too. Just *continue* instead.[/red]1technology-tile-T17_EarthquakeEngineering-front65a5eddcabbaa00
NekonyancerEarthquake Engineering lets us discard up to 3 cards and then draw as many cards as we discarded. *Select Yonaguni, Atlantis, and Moai Statue* (everything but the card on the far left). *Then click on "Discard selected cards" at the top!*1builder-card-C29_Atlantis-front65a5ede76c21a10actDiscardAndDraw_button 16
Nekonyancer[red]Whoa! We drew three more artifacts! Heh, maybe we should have kept Moai Statue... oh well.[/red] Now we can trigger the *Manuscript.* *Click on the button at the top! When another window appears, click on "Confirm!"*1player-table-11941354-hand65a5eded91fe510btnChoice0 16
Nekonyancer*Great work!* By the way, the technology card we used is now sitting next to our board. This is important because some technology cards - like *Pliny the Elder* - have previously used technology cards as their requirement.1technology-tile-T33_PlinyTheElder-front65a5edf3e280600
Nekonyancer[red]Note that the technolgy card we took was *not* replaced.[/red] When there is *1* card left in the row, the last card will be discarded. Then it will be refilled with 3 new cards.2technology-tile-T1_Anaximenes-front65a5edf3e280600
Nekonyancer[green]Okay, that was our two actions.[/green] It's time for the *Timeline phase,* and this time we satisfy our artifacts' requirements! (You can scroll down to our board if you don't remember what they are.) *Click on "Draw 1 card" at the top! Confirm!*3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment65a5edf3e280610btnChoice0 16
Nekonyancer[red]Our Engine is really coming alive now![/red] *Click on "Remove 1 (token) on your timeline!"*1btnChoice165a5edff2aca510btnChoice1 16
Nekonyancer*Turn 4!* The tutorial is almost over. I have to teach you the other three main actions: *Archive, Excavate,* and *Search.* [red]*Archive*[/red] lets you simply discard one Knowledge token from 1 monument. [green]*Search*[/green] lets you simply draw a card. Generally, you'll want to accomplish those tasks through card effects instead of main actions.1actChooseAction_archive_button65a5ee265ad9900actChooseAction_archive_button 1 actChooseAction_search_button 3
Nekonyancer*Excavate* is much more useful. When we use this action, we can *turn* any number of monuments in our *past* and draw *twice* that many cards. [green][tip] Turned cards cannot be turned again, but some cards can straighten them![/green]2actChooseAction_excavate_button65a5ee265ad9900
NekonyancerLet's see it in action! [red]I'll click on the button for you...[/red]3actChooseAction_excavate_button65a5ee265ad9900actChooseAction_excavate_button 1
Nekonyancer*1.* Scroll down to your board. *2.* Select *both* monuments in our past. *3.* Click on [blue]*"Excavate selected cards"*[/blue] at the top! *4.* Confirm!1maintitlebar_content65a5ee2f25f9710
Nekonyancer*Awesome!* We drew... [red]only 3 cards? Not 4?[/red] Oh. We hit the hand size limit of 10 and had to stop. Oh well.1builder-card-P25_ChichenItza-front65a5ee3369c8700
Nekonyancer[blue]Okay, I think you've seen enough![/blue] The end of the game is triggered when one player has *14 monuments in their past.* When everyone has had the same number of turns, the game ends, and we go to [green]scoring![/green]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment65a5ee3369c8700
Nekonyancer*Each player scores...* [green]• Points[/green] from monuments in their past equal to their VP value. [green]• Points[/green] from monuments in their past with bonus scoring conditions. [green]• Points[/green] from Ⅱ technology cards. [green]• 1 point[/green] for each monument in their Timeline. [red]• Minus 1 point[/red] for each Lost Knowledge token. [green]Whoever has the most points wins![/green]3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment65a5ee3369c8700
NekonyancerWhen you have more experience and want more of a challenge, I suggest turning off *"First game"* in the *Lobby Options.* If you do, each player will be dealt [red]random cards[/red] at the beginning of the game instead of a prearranged hand.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment65a5ee3369c8700
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Ancient Knowledge!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! A big thank you goes out to *Tisaac* and *thoun* for bringing this game to BGA! Have fun! :D5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment65a5ee3369c8700
