Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed3c6c7586.75692181.jpg[/img] You've just inherited a family winery! You have 10 rounds to accumulate the most Prestige Points and become the Cellar Master of the decade. [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
NekonyancerIn each round, each player will decide which tasks to assign to their three *collaborators* (workers). You'll need to acquire vineyards, build wine presses and storage, and blend your still wines into your final product: *cuvées.* You'll also need to develop a marketing strategy and ship the cuvées to earn prestige, all while keeping an eye on your winery's environmental impact. [blue]It's a complicated business, isn't it? Are you up to the challenge?[/blue]2maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerAt the beginning of the game, 12 *inheritance cards* are distributed equally among the players, who will then *draft* the cards - pick a card, pass the hand, pick a new card, pass the new hand - until each player has selected *3 cards.* [blue]These cards determine what sorts of advantages we'll start the game with![/blue]3AOCcontainer000
NekonyancerThis tutorial was made from a *2-player* game, so we received *6* inheritance cards. As you can see, inheritance cards come in [blue]three different colors:[/blue] *- Green* (Vineyard) *- Purple* (Press) *- Brown* (Winery) We'll go over them one at a time.4AOCcontainer000
Nekonyancer[green]*Green*[/green] inheritance cards grant *vineyards* at the beginning of the game. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed3c916ac3.34553479.jpg[/img] Some of them also increase your [green]eco-responsibility[/green] level by 1. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed3caebd67.74554911.jpg[/img] Each card also has a number of *stars* on it. When each player has drafted 3 cards, our star totals will determine the starting turn order.5AOCcontainer000
Nekonyancer*Click on the 3rd card to take it!* It's the green card with 1 star!6AOCcontainer010
Nekonyancer*Great!* The card we chose is now shown at the bottom. The rest of our cards were given to our opponent, who gave us theirs in return.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6526068a026cf00
NekonyancerNext, let's take a purple *Press* card. It will increase how many grapes we can press into wine each round. [green](More on wine pressing later.)[/green] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed3ccd2a91.84161644.jpg[/img] Press cards also put some finished *cuvées* into our *cellar.* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed3d091358.91639163.jpg[/img] *Select the card on the far right!*2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6526068a026cf10
NekonyancerFinally, let's take a brown *Winery* card. Winery cards increase your wine storage capacity. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed3d309e25.20556134.jpg[/img] They also let you start the game with some still wines. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed3d53a520.95991569.jpg[/img] *Select the brown winery card!*1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment652606a68445d10
NekonyancerOkay, we've chosen our three inheritance cards! Let's take a moment to review what we got from them. *First, click on this area - your Personal Board - to make it bigger. Then continue to the next box.*1AOCwinery-5bc7f6652606b6d183100
NekonyancerWe got a [green]Vineyard[/green] from the *Vallee de la Marne* region. All inheritance vineyards are from this region. The cubes on the card show how many grapes it produces, and of what kind - 3 blue (Meuniers), in this case. [blue]Below the Vineyard, there are some numbers that indicate:[/blue] - The number of cards of that region in the game AND - The total number of grapes produced by all the cards of that region.2AOCregion-1-5bc7f6652606b6d183100
NekonyancerFor example, there are only 3 cards from *Côte des Blancs* in the game. Together, the 3 cards produce 8 yellow grapes (Chardonnay).3AOCregion-3-5bc7f6652606b6d183100
NekonyancerNext, we upgraded our *Wine Press level.* Each player starts at *3* on their own track, but our Press Inheritance card bumped us up to *5.* That means we can press 5 of the grapes we produce each round into still wines.4AOCpress-5bc7f6652606b6d183100
NekonyancerWe also upgraded our *still wine storage.* Each player starts with the ability to store 3 barrels of wine. Thanks to our inheritance cards, we have room for 6, and two of the slots are already filled with [blue]Meuniers still wine.[/blue]5AOCwinery-5bc7f6652606b6d183100
NekonyancerFinally, we have two blended *cuvées* in our *cellar:* a [blue]*Tradition Brut*[/blue] and a *Blanc de Noirs.* Cuvées are made by blending still wines in our storage. [green](More about blending later.)[/green]6AOCcellar-5bc7f6652606b6d183100
Nekonyancer*Click on the main board again.* There's one more thing we got from our inheritance: 1 step on our [green]eco-responsibility track.[/green] At the end of the game, we'll earn prestige points depending on how high we climbed! [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed3d71dea0.81956312.jpg[/img] [blue]We're the blue player![/blue]7AOCaction_market_FR652606b6d183100AOCtooltips_vineyard_4 9
NekonyancerLet's move on. There are *10 rounds* in Age of Champagne, and each round is split into *5 phases:* [blue]1. New Event. 2. Collaborators Assignment. 3. Resolving Actions. 4. Grape Harvest. 5. End of round.[/blue]8archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment652606b6d183100
Nekonyancer[blue]*Phase 1: New Event.*[/blue]---During this phase, the top card of the [red]*event deck*[/red] will be flipped. Its effects will then be applied to the round. [blue]In this case, the seaports are on strike, so cuvées cannot be shipped by boat this round.[/blue] (More on shipping later.)9AOCevent-1652606b6d183100AOCevent-1 1
Nekonyancer[blue]*Phase 2: Collaborators assignment.*[/blue]---This is when players assign their three *collaborators* (workers) to the various action spaces on the board. There are eight different locations on the board, each with multiple available spaces.10archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment652606b6d183100
Nekonyancer[red]*Location 1: Acquire a Vineyard.*[/red]---If we put a collaborator on one of these Vineyard cards, we can add it to our own personal board, where it will (obviously) produce grapes for us. The number of available Vineyard cards is always equal to the number of players.11AOCaction_vineyard_2652606b6d183100
NekonyancerWe already have one vineyard, producing [blue]3 blue grapes,[/blue] but we're going to need more - and of different kinds - if we're going to be successful! *Click on the right of the two available vineyards on the main board to assign a collaborator!*1AOCregion-1-5bc7f6652606cfc875c10AOCtooltips_vineyard_3 14
Nekonyancer[blue]Good![/blue] Now that we've claimed this vineyard, no one else can take it.1AOCtooltips_vineyard_2652606d3e57b600
Nekonyancer[red]*Location 2: Upgrade wine press.*[/red]---Placing a collaborator here will upgrade our press. Our inheritance card already upgraded us from 3 to 5. Placing a collaborator here will get us up to 8.1AOCaction_press_2652606d8e791400
NekonyancerAs you can see, there are four spaces in this location, though our opponent (orange)has already claimed one of them and another is blocked (white) because this is a 2-player game. Each space grants a different bonus. You can *hover* over each space to see what they are. *Click on the top-right space to place a collaborator.*2AOCaction_press_2652606d8e791410
Nekonyancer[red]*Location 3: Install a winery.*[/red]---Placing a collaborator here will upgrade our storage of still wines by 3. Just like the last location, there are four different spaces, each with a different bonus.1AOCaction_winery_2652606e4dd97800
NekonyancerThe top-right space of this location is *linked* with the top-right space of the previous location. Placing collaborators on both spaces will grant us a [red]*bonus token!*[/red] *Click on the top-right space to place a collaborator!*2AOCaction_winery_2652606e4dd97810
NekonyancerOkay! Everyone has placed their three collaborators, so that's the end of Phase 2. [blue]*Phase 3: Resolving actions.*[/blue]---All the actions will be triggered in order!1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment652606e8be57a00
NekonyancerFirst, players who placed collaborators here will claim their new vineyards...2AOCtooltips_vineyard_2652606e8be57a00
NekonyancerThen, wine presses are upgraded...3AOCtooltips_press_2652606e8c0b6e00
NekonyancerThird, new storages are claimed from the supply.4AOCtooltips_winery_2652606e8c2fed00
NekonyancerHere's the [red]*bonus token*[/red] that we got from the *linked* spaces! There are several different kinds, and our opponents can't see which kind we got. This particular token can be used as an extra collaborator, but only to take the *Shipping* action, which we'll learn about soon.6AOCbonus-19652606e8c45e900AOCbonus-19 1
NekonyancerI'll skip over the resolution of [red]Locations 4, 5, and 6[/red] for now. We'll learn about them next round.7AOCtooltips_shipping_2652606e8c45e900
Nekonyancer[blue]*Phase 4: Grape Harvest.*[/blue]---Each player's vineyards produces grapes, which are then pressed into wine and stored. If the player's *wine press* is not good enough to handle all the grapes, some will have to be [red]discarded.[/red] Similarly, if a player does not have enough room in *storage,* some of the pressed wines will have to be [red]discarded.[/red]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment652606f8790d100
NekonyancerIn our case, our vineyards produce *5 units of grapes* (3 blue and 2 black). Our wine press can handle *8 units* of grapes at once. Our storage has space for *7 more barrels* of wine. [red]Looks like we can produce 5 barrels! We don't have to discard anything![/red]2AOCwinery-5bc7f6652606f8790d100
NekonyancerIf we harvested more grapes than we could press or store, we would choose which grapes we would press and which we would discard [red]*here.*[/red]3AOCwines652606f8790d100AOCwines 1
NekonyancerSince our facilities can handle everything we harvested, simply click on the *checkmark* to select everything. *Then click on [green]Grape harvest!*[/green] Mmm... you got an error, didn't you? Don't worry, it will work when you play a real game. Click on *"Continue"* instead.4AOCwines652606f8790d100
Nekonyancer*Okay!* We have five new wines in our storage!2AOCwinery-5bc7f6652607031421100
Nekonyancer[blue]*Phase 5: End of Season.*[/blue]---Two things happen during this phase: *1.* Player order is changed, but only if a player assigned a collaborator to [red]*one of these spaces*[/red] to make themselves the first player. (More on this later.) *2.* [blue]*Vineyard*[/blue] cards are restocked.3AOCtooltips_council_3652607031421100AOCtooltips_council_2 1 AOCtooltips_council_3 1
Nekonyancer*And that's the end of Round 1!* We'll go through two more rounds together so I can show you the rest of the locations on the board. Before we get back to the locations though, there are two things to note. First of all, a new [red]*event card*[/red] was dealt. (Phase 1).4AOCevent-2652607031421100AOCevent-2 1
NekonyancerSecond, all the white pieces on the board moved to block different spaces. Again, this only happens in *2/3-player* games, and can be turned disabled in the lobby options.5AOCtooltips_press_2652607031421100AOCtooltips_press_2 12 AOCtooltips_winery_3 12 AOCtooltips_wineDraw_4 12
NekonyancerAlright, let's get back to the locations! [red]*Location 4: Marketing Strategy.*[/red]---Putting a collaborator here allows us, in two stages, to move wines from our cellar to our "œnothèque" - a fancier wine storage room - and then into our Marketing Strategy grid. [green]Wines in our grid will increase the amount of points we get from each wine shipment![/green]1AOCaction_marketing_16526070db140400
NekonyancerThere are only two spaces in this location, each of which is marked "n." These spaces are linked to two other spaces marked "n+1." At the end of a round, any collaborators on "n" spaces do NOT return to their owners. Instead, they move to "n+1" spaces. [blue]Basically, this will tie up collaborators for 2 rounds instead of 1.[/blue]2AOCaction_marketing_16526070db140400
NekonyancerLet's do it! *Click on the top "n" space to assign a collaborator!*3AOCaction_marketing_16526070db140410
NekonyancerLet's skip over Location 5 for now and move on to 6. [red]*Location 6: Wine blending.*[/red]---This location allows us to blend wines together to make *cuvées.*1AOCaction_wineDraw_165260781af67200
NekonyancerI'll explain more during the resolution phase. For now, *click on the top-left space to place a collaborator!*2AOCaction_wineDraw_165260781af67210
Nekonyancer[red]*Location 8:*[/red] Council of Cellar Masters.---This space allows us to change the turn order! *Click here to place a collaborator!*1AOCaction_council_16526078e1b3f210
Nekonyancer*Great!* Our collaborator is on the *1-space,* so our turn order marker will be moved to the *1st slot* of the turn order, shifting other markers accordingly.1AOCtooltips_council_1652607adec2ae00
NekonyancerThe other spaces here work the same way. Thus, if our opponent sent a collaborator here on the same turn, it would occupy the 2nd slot. Their turn order marker would thus take the 2nd position in the turn order. [blue]I know, it's redundant in a 2-player game. It makes sense with more players.[/blue]2AOCtooltips_council_1652607adec2ae00AOCpress-fc7f01 12
NekonyancerAnyway, it's time to resolve our actions!3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment652607adec2ae00
NekonyancerBGA is resolving [red]Location 4: Marketing Strategy.[/red] We can choose *up to 3* cuvées from our cellar to move into our œnothèque. *Click on the checkmark to select all of the available cuvées. Then click on [green]"Transfer to œnothèque."[/green]* Yeah, I know, errors. Nothing I can do about it. Click on *"Continue."*4AOCwines652607adf117d00
Nekonyancer*Great!* Our cuvées are all set up. Next round, they'll move to the right, into the marketing grid.1AOCoenotheque-5bc7f6652607b9d4a7f00
NekonyancerNow we have to resolve [red]Location 6: Wine Blending.[/red] It takes *3* still wines to produce *1* *cuvée.* The kinds of wines we use determine what kinds of cuvées we end up with.2AOCwineDraw652607b9d4a7f00
NekonyancerThere are six combinations of wines that will all result in [blue]*Tradition Brut,*[/blue] the cheapest kind of cuvée. For *Blanc de Noirs,* we'll need to use all or almost all black Pinot Noir wines. The crème de la crème, [green]*Blanc de Blancs,*[/green] is made from only the finest yellow Chardonnay wines.3AOCcuvee_1652607b9d4a7f00
NekonyancerIf you want a reminder of these combinations at any time, you can click on this helpful card in your [blue]*player information panel!*[/blue] Go ahead, click on it!4AOCaids652607b9d4a7f00player_info_5bc7f6 2
NekonyancerWhile we're over here, you can also click on the *"i"* to see explanations of all the different icons used in the game!5player_info_5bc7f6652607b9d4a7f00
NekonyancerNow where were we? Right, we were blending wines. Before we do that, we can use [green]*this button*[/green] to trade any two wines for a wine of any color, but doing so will hurt our prestige, costing us 1 point. Everyone knows that the finest wineries only blend their own wines, after all!6AOCstillWinesExchange652607b9d4a7f00AOCstillWinesExchange 8
NekonyancerI don't think we need to trade right now. Select [red]*these two combinations.*[/red] *Then click on [green]Wine blending![/green]* aaand another error. Again, it will work in a real game. Click on *"Continue."*7AOCcuvee_1_0652607b9d4a7f00AOCcuvee_1_0 1 AOCcuvee_2_0 1
Nekonyancer*Excellent!* We blended 6 still wines into two cuvées, which are now in our cellar.1AOCcellar-5bc7f6652607d3a4abb00
Nekonyancer[blue]Now it's time to harvest grapes again![/blue] Since you're already an expert, I'll just skip through this part...2AOCcenterPanel652607d3a4abb00
Nekonyancer*Round 3!* There's just one last location to show you: [red]*Location 5: Shipping to Markets.*[/red]---With this action, we can fufill 1 or 2 of the contracts on the board to earn Prestige!1AOCaction_shipping_2652607e6b92e100
Nekonyancer[blue]There are three columns of contracts.[/blue] The first column is for *French* contracts, the second for *European,* and the third for *international.* European and International contracts are more likely to involve higher quantities of cuvées, more points, and more polluting methods of transportation.2AOCbonus-12652607e6b92e100
NekonyancerThere are also two rows of contracts - the *Provisional* top row and the *Active* bottom row. Whenever a contract in the bottom row is completed, the completing player can claim one of the three *bonus tokens* under it.3AOCbonus-7652607e6b92e100
NekonyancerIf we place a collaborator one of the top two spaces in [red]Location 5,[/red] we can fulfill *any* contract on the board, but only one. With the bottom two spaces, we can choose 1 or 2 contracts, but only from the *bottom row* of contracts. [green]Of course, there are other bonus effects to consider as well. You can hover with your mouse for more information![/green]4AOCaction_shipping_2652607e6b92e100
NekonyancerThe top-right spot allows us to complete a contract, even if we're missing one cuvée. However, the amount of points we gain from the contract will be reduced by *1/2/3* points if a *blue/black/yellow* cuvée is missing. *Place a collaborator on the top-right spot!*5AOCaction_shipping_2652607e6b92e110
Nekonyancer*Good!* I'll skip ahead to the resolution phase now.1AOCtooltips_shipping_2652608637ca3700
NekonyancerBGA is now resolving [red]Location 4: Marketing Strategy.[/red] The collaborator that we originally placed on an "n" space in Location 4 was moved to an "n+1" space last round. Now they can finally complete their task, moving cuvées from our œnothèque into our [blue]Marketing Grid![/blue] Each cuvée in our grid increases the amount of points we get for shipping a cuvée of that color!1AOCtooltips_marketing_16526087e85a2f00
NekonyancerTwo spaces in our grid are filled now! We'll score 1 extra point for each *Blanc de Noirs* (black) cuvée we ship and, uh, 0 extra points for each [blue]Tradition Brut[/blue] cuvée. [blue]Tradition Brut[/blue] cuvées are easy to make. Don't complain.2AOCmarketing-5bc7f66526087e86bec00
NekonyancerTime to resolve [red]Location 5: Shipping to Markets![/red] First, I'll need to tell you more about these contracts. If you hover over any card (but not over the glowing blue stamp in the middle), three rows of icons will appear. I'll use the bottom-right card as an example... 3AOCbonus-16526087e89c0f00
NekonyancerThe *top row* of icons indicates which cuvées are required and shipped. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed3d941803.20783186.jpg[/img] The *middle row* indicates what method of transportation is used, its environmental impact, and where the shipment is headed. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed3db9de67.76266318.jpg[/img] In this case, it's being flown internationally, at the cost of 2 [green]eco-responsibility levels.[/green]4AOCbonus-146526087e89c0f00
NekonyancerThe *last* row indicates how many points the contract is worth, and that the contract will be discarded and replaced upon completion. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed3dda0628.58375285.jpg[/img]5AOCbonus-146526087e89c0f00
NekonyancerRemember, we chose a space that let's us complete a contract with one cuvée missing, at the cost of some points. Let's complete the *top-middle* contract. *Click on the glowing blue stamp. Then continue to the next text box.*6AOCaction_market_deck_EU6526087e89c0f00
NekonyancerAt the top, we can see all the details of the contract. We can control which cuvée is missing from our shipment (though we don't have a choice, in this case). We can see what method of transportation will be used (boat), where the shipment is headed (EU), and how many points we'll get for it (1). *Click on [green]"Confirm!"[/green]*7AOCcenterPanel6526087e89c0f10AOCshippingButton 3
NekonyancerGreat! We earned [green]2 prestige[/green] for the contract, [red]minus 1[/red] because the shipment was missing one [blue]Tradition Brut[/blue] cuvée. In retrospect, the contract in the *bottom-left* corner was a much better choice. We would have earned *3* points (2 for contract, +1 from marketing) *AND* a bonus token! [red]Oh well![/red]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment65260895a6b9700
Nekonyancer[blue]Okay, that's everything![/blue] The game will continue as you've seen for ten rounds. Then we go to [green]scoring![/green]2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment65260895a6b9700
NekonyancerThere are *four elements* in each player's *final score:* 1. [green]Prestige points[/green] accrued during the game.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment65260895a6b9700
Nekonyancer2. [green]Vineyard bonuses.[/green] Each set of 5 vineyards from different regions is worth *5* points. In addition, for each region, the player with the most cards in that region earns *4* points. If there's a tie, whoever produces the most grapes in that region earns the points. If there's still a tie, the points are split equally.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment65260895a6b9700
Nekonyancer[green]3. Extra resources.[/green] Every six extra barrels of still wine in storage are worth *1* point. Every three extra cuvées in the cellar and œnothèque are worth *4* points.5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment65260895a6b9700
Nekonyancer[green]4. Eco-responsibility report.[/green] Each player gains points corresponding to their final position on the track. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed3e068697.05631032.jpg[/img] After adding everything up, whoever has the most points is declared *cellar master of the decade!* [red]Tiebreaker 1:[/red] Eco-responsibility track position. [red]Tiebreaker 2:[/red] Turn order.6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment65260895a6b9700
NekonyancerThere's one last thing I have to mention: The *Wine Merchant variant.* You can toggle this variant on and off in the lobby options. (Off by default.) The Wine Merchant serves as an additional opponent. If you play a solo game, you will need to play against the Wine Merchant. I won't get into specifics of how he is controlled.
