Let's learn how to play The Crew!

Tips:

• You can press the SPACE key to make the tutorial progress instead of using buttons.

• You can use    to minimize tutorial explanations if needed.

3p1cFr3nzy[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ecc2c069b6.99516211.jpeg[/img] Hello brave volunteer! Gather your spacesuit and your friends as we are going on a space adventure of a lifetime - to find a planet which may not even exist? Also make sure not to get stranded, of course. *Are you and your space crew brave enough to take on the mission to find this elusive planet?* (Please note: plays in this game may not be fully representative of a real game - this is for demonstration purposes.)1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
3p1cFr3nzy[green] [tip] This tutorial works best on a PC but phone works fine as well (try horizontal mode too). Just know that phone users might have to minimize message bubbles a lot more :) [/green] This co-operative game is based on trick taking card games, where players have to fulfil missions assigned to them. We will get onto how trick taking works shortly :) *This tutorial should take between 10-15 minutes.* [tip] If you need to minimize the text bubble at any point, just click in the top right hand corner. 2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
3p1cFr3nzyThe deck used in this game will contain 40 cards, with 5 colors. There are five colors, four of which are *pink*, *green*, *blue* and *yellow* and each of these colors has 9 cards labelled 1 to 9. There is also four *Black* cards labelled 1 to 4 (spaceships/rockets). There are less black cards, but they are also *trump* cards, meaning they always beat the other colors in terms of winning a trick. [tip] For 3 players someone will get an extra card.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
3p1cFr3nzyIf you want to refer to the shapes on the cards rather than the colors of the cards, you can use this key: Blue = circle Green = triangle Pink = square Yellow = cross Black = none (different artwork)4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
3p1cFr3nzyEnough with the boring bit - let's start our first mission! [tip] This tutorial will start at mission 2. What mission you wish to start out on when you play can be changed very easily in table options :) 5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
3p1cFr3nzyFor each mission, the commander is decided by the player with the strongest card in the game - [blue]black 4[/blue]. They will always get first pick in what tasks they want to finish (and it appears to be us to start :O ). You may also notice this [red]commander token[/red] - this makes it easier to signify who the commander is for this round (and thus locate the black 4). 6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000commander-icon-91367784 1 hand_item_40 2
3p1cFr3nzyHigh numbered tasks are usually difficult to take unless you have that card, so let's take the [green]green 9[/green] task.7task-1010tasks-list-container 3
3p1cFr3nzyTask selection then continues, with the player to the left having the next choice of task they want to take (unless there is no choice). Let's hope that they can complete it... !!! If it is your turn to take a task, you *must* choose only one task. 1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment630b3cccaec4400
3p1cFr3nzyThe [blue]distress signal[/blue] you see over on the right should only be used if you think it's impossible to complete your mission, so let's pass on using it right now. *Choose the 'no opinion' button to continue.* [tip] The distress signal allows all players to pass one card of their choice to their left or right, depending on the direction chosen.2task-1630b3cccaec4410distress-panel-icon 7 whatever-button 16
3p1cFr3nzyCommanders always play the first card of the mission, so it's your turn to pick a card! But what do we want to pick? Let's find out how tasks work first.1task-1630b3ce0719e400
3p1cFr3nzyTo complete the task, all you need to do is win a trick containing the card shown on the task! Sounds simple right?! (well you'll see in later missions..) Tricks are likely to be won with a high card of a certain color, so let's try playing our [green]*green 9*[/green].2player-table-91367784630b3ce0719e410hand_item_18 16
3p1cFr3nzyWe just completed our task! What a great start to our mission :) But how does trick taking work? Here are the following rules that apply: (See next step) 1player-table-missions-91367784630b3cf5070b100
3p1cFr3nzy1. The first card played of the trick determines the *leading suit* or *color*. The winner of the trick is the one who plays the highest card of the *leading color*. 2. Players must play a card within the same leading color unless they do not have one, in which they can play any card of their choice. 3. If a player does not have a leading color card, they can also play a trump card (the black cards). This color always wins the trick.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment630b3cf5070b100
3p1cFr3nzyThe winner of the trick also gets to lead the next trick! But how would you determine what the other players want you to play as the leading card? Well here is where communication is very limited - you can only give information about *one* of your cards in your hand! Let's watch what ExplodingKitten3 does:3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment630b3cf5070b100
3p1cFr3nzyThey just told us that they have yellow 9 in their hand! But what that does the green *radar token* placement say about their hand? Let's find out: 1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment630b3cfcf00b000
3p1cFr3nzySee the below image for how communication works in this game: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ecc30f5ab9.24090499.png[/img] [tip] Unfortunately, communicating rockets is strictly forbidden in this game. In addition, you can only communicate *once*, so make it count! Some tips for communicating will be given at the end :) 2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment630b3cfcf00b000
3p1cFr3nzyIf the tutorial is not in English, here is a summary: - Radar token at the top means the *highest* card of that colour. - Radar token at the bottom means the *lowest* card of that colour. - Radar token in the middle means the *only* card of that colour. - Red radar token means the communicated card *has already been played*.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment630b3cfcf00b000
3p1cFr3nzy*What does this communication mean?* This is suggesting that LogicMeister3299 wants to win a trick with pink 8. Maybe we should play pink 9 first so they can win the trick after that...1player-table-91367784630b3d05961ea11hand_item_27 16
3p1cFr3nzyAnd now we can let them win this trick! Which card is best to play do you think? (Hint: it is good to get rid of high cards to let someone else win tricks more easily later on..)1player-table-91367784630b3d1ed331b10
3p1cFr3nzyWe completed all tasks and thus completed the mission - Awesome! :D [tip] If you didn't notice, ExplodingKitten3 didn't have another *pink* card, so they could play *9 yellow* to finish LogicMeister3299's task. This is why having lots of one color can be very useful for completing tasks.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment630b3d31b41ab00
3p1cFr3nzy*Let's continue to the next mission!* Another great thing about this game is that you can also stop when you want to, so don't worry about having to abandon if you have to leave at some point during the game :) 2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment630b3d31b41ab10yes-button 16
3p1cFr3nzyNow onto the next mission! Each one will get more progressively difficult as you go further into the game. [tip] If you ever fail a mission, don't worry - you have unlimited retries.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment630b3d4aba06400
3p1cFr3nzyNow the two tasks are labelled 1 and 2 on them! What does this mean? If you have already looked at the logbook (or not), it says that you must do them in chronological order! In other words, avoid playing 2 yellow before 7 pink! It's your turn to pick the most sensible task for the hand we were dealt.2task-1630b3d4aba06410
3p1cFr3nzyIt appears as if LogicMeister3299 wants to use the distress signal as they may struggle to finish their task! Here they are asking us to pass one card to the player on the left (for us it's LogicMeister3299). Let's pass our highest yellow to help them out. 1mission-description630b3d7da559b00
3p1cFr3nzyWe also got 9 pink from ExplodingKitten3 which means we are more than certain to finish our task :D (We have the 2 highest pink cards) Let's complete our task first so LogicMeister3299 can complete theirs afterwards. 1hand_item_27630b3d975f9b300
3p1cFr3nzyChoose a sensible card from our hand to win the trick :) (Not pink 8 in this case)2hand-wrapper630b3d975f9b310
3p1cFr3nzyYou're halfway there! It's now your turn to pick a card which will help LogicMeister3299 complete their task on this trick. *[tip] If no one communicates anything at all, you are usually okay to let someone complete their task without any problems. This includes leading with a card with the same color as the task card.*1hand630b3da7f41d810
3p1cFr3nzyVery nice work! It appears like you now have got the hang of how the game works! 1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment630b3db2db46f00
3p1cFr3nzyBefore finishing this tutorial, let's go over a couple strategy tips and things to look out for when playing the game: 2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment630b3db2db46f00
3p1cFr3nzy[tip] Always read the log book for what your requirements are to complete the mission! A lot of mission requirements may not have task cards at all so look out for that. [tip] No card high enough to win the task or no card of that color at all? No problem! You can always indicate a low card so that you can play a rocket to trump the color and complete the task, if you don't have any more cards of that color. 3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment630b3db2db46f00
3p1cFr3nzyAnd that's all you need to know to start playing the Crew! I hope you enjoyed this tutorial :) *Can you beat all 50 tasks and make it safely back to Earth?*4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment630b3db2db46f00
3p1cFr3nzyStay safe out there space crew! [blue][tip] If you encounter any bugs or want to make suggestions, feel free to message 3p1cFr3nzy - there is always room for improvement for my tutorials![/blue]5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment630b3db2db46f00
