villager[tip] [green]This tutorial is best experienced on a full screen desktop browser at 1080p[/green] Welcome to the tutorial for one of the most popular *worker placement* games on BGA. You will soon learn the rules and mechanics to enjoy this phenomenal game, that has won numerous awards for its streamlined play.1maintitlebar_content000zone_resource_3 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWMxZjBmYzRkOC42ODcwNjY1MS5qcGc=/-205/-68
villagerLife was hard in the early days of human history. Our ancestors were hard workers, but through ingenuity learned to make much of this work easier. Over time, they developed tools to collect resources and develop human civilization. *In Stone Age, you take on the role of a human in this bygone era.*2maintitlebar_content000page-title aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWMxZjI3YmIyMi42MzIwOTQ3My5qcGc=/504/-9
villagerBeginning with archaic tools, you collect wood, stone, and gold to attain higher levels of knowledge and build sturdier structures. With resources being scarce, you must compete for the limited number of spaces on the board that produce them while also gathering food to feed your growing tribe. 3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
villagerIn Stone Age, the players can choose to do ONE of the following on their turn: - hunt - collect wood - make bricks - break stone - wash their gold from the river - increase their tribe - make tools - increase their agriculture output - advance their civilization / knowledge - construct buildings. Smart timing and placement of your workers will give you the winning victory points.6pagemaintitletext000
villagerSo many choices.. like any worker placement game, the core learning is to understand when to choose which spot. Not to worry.. everything in Stone Age thematically fits, and you will soon find a rich compelling set of strategies to enjoy your game.7archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
villagerLet me give you a brief overview of the game board in front of you. Broadly, there are 4 "zones". Zone 1 (Village) ============== Your humble village has the spaces for the Tool Maker, the Field, and the Hut8zone_tool_0000zone_tool_0 6 zone_hut_0 6 zone_field_0 6
villagerZone 2 (hunting and gathering) ============================ you have spaces for the following resources - food - wood - brick - stone - gold9zone_resource_0000zone_resource_0 6 zone_resource_1 6 zone_resource_2 6 zone_resource_3 6 zone_resource_4 6
villagerZone 3 (additional resources and knowledge) ==================================== The 4 river docks under the cascading waterfall offer 4 different *Civilization Cards*. Notice each spot, starting from the right most, has increasing cost of resources to purchase the card.. from 1 resource to 4 resources.10zone_card_3000zone_card_0 6 zone_card_1 6 zone_card_2 6 zone_card_3 6
villagerZone 4 (build for VPs) ================== Building tiles are on offer here. There are 2 piles of 7 tiles each.. and the remaining number is highlighted here. If you want to build one, simply pay the listed resource cost, and get awarded VPs. Resource cost of each building is available by simply hovering over the tile.11zone_building_0000zone_building_0 6 zone_building_1 6 sta_buildingCounter_0 6 sta_buildingCounter_1 6
villageralso note the "circles" in each of these zones and placement areas, which indicate how many workers are allowed. There's also restrictions on worker placement based on player count.. we'll discuss that later.12zone_resource_2000zone_resource_2 11
villagerYou start the game with *5 workers*13workernbr_56345382000ef6b8a4e-cd38-437b-8909-4f163b6270be 6
villagerand *12 food* Food is one of the most important resources in the game. If you can't feed your workers, then you must either lose precious resources in exchange, or your hard earned Victory Points (VPs).14resource_0_56345382000829663a0-dad9-445b-8e8f-b4cde2c23a0d 6
villagerYou can also *increase your agriculture level*, which provides you food (equal to the current level) at the end of the ROUND. (we'll discuss soon that each ROUND has 3 Phases.. [green]*right now, we are in Phase 1, ie worker placement phase*).[/green]15agri_56345382000
villagerNotice that one of the Civilization cards on offer has the benefit of increasing your Agriculture level. This card will cost ONE resource of any kind (hover over the card, and also note the singular resource icon above the space). Note: this is the Worker PLACEMENT phase.. only in the next phase, when you GATHER your workers, you will trigger the benefit on that space.16zone_card_0000zone_card_0 8
villagerThe card also has the added benefit of increasing your *culture*. There are end game scoring conditions that reward you with lots of VP for sets of culture cards, like this one with the Sun-dial. Hover over the card for details.17zone_card_0000zone_card_0 11
villagerLet's grab the card.. simply click on it to place one of your 5 workers there.18zone_card_0010zone_card_0 16
villagerNotice your opponent also grabbed the "increase agriculture level" benefit by placing a worker on the Field spot.1zone_field_0619191608b37b00zone_field_0 8
villagerLet's place a worker at the Tool Maker space, and increase our Tool level. What are Tools? In Stone Age, dice are rolled to collect resources. The greater the value of the dice, the more resources. Tools can be used to increase your dice roll score.2zone_tool_0619191608b37b10zone_tool_0 16
villager[tip] the game history on the right side is very useful in understanding the actions being taken by you and your opponents.1log_2619191649678000
villagerYour opponent placed 3 of his workers at the Forest to collect Wood (when the workers are GATHERED in the next phase) Right now, both players still have workers left to be assigned. In this 1st phase, ie "worker placement phase", turns will go back and forth until ALL workers are placed. If any player has finished placing their workers, they simply pass their turn and wait for other players. 1zone_resource_1619191688388600zone_resource_1 8
villagerLet's place 3 workers at the Clay Pit and make some bricks! *Remember to click 3 times, and then click the button "Confirm people placement"!!*2zone_resource_2619191688388610action_confirm 16 zone_resource_2 19
villagerYour opponent placed his *final* worker to grab the next costlier Civilization card on offer at the river docks, available for a cost of any 2 resources. Again, resources are Wood, Brick, Stone, and Gold.. and there are player spots for each of these.1zone_card_161919170dfeee00zone_card_1 8
villagerThink of these Civilization Cards, offered at the 4 docks of your Village, as opportunities to : 1) trade resources for other resources (often cheaper to expensive.. like Clay to Gold if possible) 2) gain "knowledge" through technology symbols and score multipliers With this card, as you keep collecting more Farmer symbols, your score increases by multiplying the number of Farmer symbols in your tableau, by the Agriculture level. Example, 5 Farmer symbols * 7 on the Agriculture level = 35 points at end of game.2zone_card_161919170dfeee00zone_card_1 8
villagerDid you notice that the resource areas have 7 "circles" available for workers? *With 3 players: the figures of only 2 players may occupy each of these locations*: forest, clay mound, quarry, and river. *With 2 players: the figures of only 1 player may occupy each of these locations*: forest, clay mound, quarry, and river. [tip] Timing to grab that resource matters a lot in a 2-player game.3zone_resource_361919170dfeee00zone_resource_3 11
villager*It's time for Phase 2* in Round 1, ie *Gather Workers*, and trigger the benefits on those spots. *Workers can be gathered in ANY ORDER*, though you will soon see that its beneficial to gather some workers/benefits first before others. For this tutorial, *let's gather our worker at the Tool Maker, by clicking at the spot indicated*. This will get us 1 Tool that can be used by other workers.4zone_resource_461919170dfeee10zone_tool_0 16
villagerAnd we got 1 Tool in our Supply.2tool_161919171b7ea000firstplayer 8 tool_1 8
villagerAs we are the Starting Player (indicated by this icon), we get to Gather ALL our workers FIRST, before passing the turn to the opponent.3firstplayer61919171b7ea000firstplayer 8
villager*Let's gather our 3 workers at the Clay Pit to produce some Bricks.* If you hover over the space, the tooltip helpfully reminds you that each worker you assigned in this space gives you a 6-sided die... with 3 workers, you get 3 dice. BGA rolls the dice for you.. and then divides the sum by a number. For Bricks, the sum is divided by 4. *Click this space to initiate the action!*4zone_resource_261919171b7ea010zone_resource_2 16
villagerThat may have happened too fast, so check the game history. It shows you rolled a 9. 9 divided by 4, gives us the whole number quotient of 2 (yay for elementary math :) Hence 2 Bricks were added to your supply.1resource_2_56345382619191733134e00
villagerquick side note that you may have also observed BGA informing you that "you don't have enough tools to increase production". What that means is that your dice roll of 9 can only be increased to 10 with the help of your singular tool. However, 10 / 4 still is only 2 bricks. [green]If you had 3 tools, then you could have added that to the die sum to make it 12.. which would have resulted in 3 bricks![/green]2zone_resource_2619191733134e00
villagerLet's gather our last worker at the Civilization card. Remember, that card is at the 1-resource cost spot, which we can easily pay with our bricks. Click Continue to proceed with this action.. notice your Brick supply reduces by 1.3zone_card_0619191733134e00zone_card_0 8
villagerThe bought card is added to your tableau. And you gain the immediate benefit of the card, ie 1 increased on the Agriculture level track.1sta_myCards61919174694c300card_31 8 b20c372b-4efd-4f91-8a51-8e4dcc4d88b1 12
villagerYou have gathered all your workers. Now its time for your opponent to gather theirs, and get the space benefits.2avatar_8539450061919174694c300
villagerQuick refresher as you see your opponents workers being gathered.. The worker on the Field spot increased their Agriculture level.1zone_field_06191917a9f1dd00zone_field_0 6 9ee5cc55-5e8a-43a3-827b-8e84dcbac400 12
villagerGathering 3 workers from the Forest, allowed the opponent to roll 3 dice. Sum of the dice roll is 10, which when divided by 3 (for Wood, the divisor is 3) gives 3 Wood. [tip] if you hover over other resources, you will notice that Stone's divisor is 5, and Gold's divisor is 6. hence making these resources harder to get.1zone_resource_16191917cec28e00zone_resource_1 6
villager...and there are their 3 wood!1resource_1_853945006191917ec4f9400
villagerand finally, the last worker is gathered.. 2 wood are paid to obtain the Civilization card by your opponent.1zone_card_1619191808a03900zone_card_1 6
villagerOnce ALL workers by ALL players have been gathered, it marks the END of the 2nd Phase. And the 3rd final phase for this Round 1 begins.. *feed your workers*2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment619191808a03900
villagerYour opponent has 5 workers.. 12 food.. and 1 Agriculture level which acts like a permanent discount on the food needed. Ie, instead of 5 food being consumed, only 4 food are used up.3workernbr_85394500619191808a03900a90cdf8a-211d-4b41-8922-2e4264f927d9 6 824f4396-7862-4b7a-8b01-1b0292e97123 6 99950140-2e90-4e03-8d9c-96b53960e5f4 6
villagerBGA automatically does all the math to feed the workers. !!! If for some reason, you do not have sufficient food, [red]you need to instead pay resources in lieu of the missing food quantity, OR LOSE 10 Victory Points![/red]4resource_0_85394500619191808b72900
villagerSimilarly, you also feed 4 food to your 5 workers, using the discount of the Agriculture track.5resource_0_56345382619191808b83e00
villagerA new round begins.. BGA automatically shifts the Civilization cards to the right, making the expensive ones now cheaper... and draws fresh cards into the docks. Your opponent is the first player, and they place a worker on the cheapest Civilization card.1zone_card_061919183e269e00zone_card_0 6 firstplayer 12
villagerLike before, you took first dibs on the Field to increase your Agriculture track by another level. More food = more workers you can support. This is also a good time to mention that in a 2-player game, only 2 of the 3 places (Hut, Field, and Tool Maker) can be occupied. So choose early and choose wisely. 1zone_tool_061919195a376700zone_tool_0 6 zone_hut_0 6 zone_field_0 6
villagerYour opponent decided to grab the remaining village space. the Hut. Notice 2 workers were placed. The benefit of the Hut is that once these workers are gathered in the next phase of this round, you will ADD ONE MORE WORKER to your tribe. (upto a max of 10 workers) It takes 2 to tango :) [tip] more workers = more placements = more benefits = more food needed1zone_hut_06191919f3ca5700zone_hut_0 6
villagerLet's make some cheap wood. it will come in handy for buying Civilization cards, and to pay for Building tiles. Place 4 workers in the Forest (click 4 times)! 2zone_resource_16191919f3ca5710zone_resource_1 20
villagerInteresting.. your opponent sent 2 workers to HUNT for Food. Remember they are planning to grow their tribe by another extra person at the end of this round, so more food could be very useful in the long run. In Stone Age, babies start working as soon as they are added to the tribe :) [tip] there is no limit on the number of workers that can be placed at the Hunting Grounds.1zone_resource_0619191a69301100zone_resource_0 6
villagerSo how does Hunting work? It's just like other resource spaces. In this case, when gathering the 2 workers, your opponent will roll 2 dice. The SUM of the dice will be divided by the divisor 2, to produce that many food into the supply. For example, if 11 was rolled by the 2 D6 dice, then 5 food are given. In such a roll, adding a Tool to the roll, and making it 12, would have given 6 food!!2zone_resource_0619191a69301100zone_resource_0 6
villagerAt this point, you know enough to have a fun game of Stone Age. As noted before, dont forget to hover over the spaces and the cards if you need a reminder on what they do, and how they score.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment619191a69301100
villagerThe game end is triggered when one of the 2 conditions are met: 1) One of the building tile piles are exhausted. The current round is played to completion, including players feeding their tribe. 2) there aren't enough Civilization cards left to fill all 4 dock spaces at the beginning of the round. The game ends immediately without starting the new round.4sta_buildings619191a69301100sta_buildingCounter_0 6 sta_buildingCounter_1 6 sta_cardCounter 6
villagerSo to quickly summarize, here's what you learnt: 1) Win the game by getting the most VP. - from Civilization cards - from Buildings 2) However, both Civilization cards and Buildings need resources.. often specific resources. 3) Gather those resources by placing your workers on the resource spots. 4) Increase your resource gathering chances by creating Tools, that add to your dice roll 5) Increase the number of your workers (which gives you more dice, more placement options) by using the Hut 6) Remember to always have enough food, to feed your workers at the end of a round, by hunting or increasing your agriculture level. Else you will lose resources, or 10 VP. 5maintitlebar_content619191a69301100
