Jellby[green]*Welcome to the Solo Whist tutorial!*[/green] Solo Whist is a classic trick-taking card game for four players. It is played with a standard 52-card deck, with no jokers. As its name suggests, it is an *individual* game, although temporary teams will be formed in each hand, 2 against 2 or 3 against 1.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

JellbyThe game is played over a [blue]number of hands[/blue] (8 in this case). Each hand has first a bidding phase, where players announce which kind of *contract* they are willing to commit to. The player with the highest bid wins the bidding. Then there's the playing phase, where the player(s) who won the bidding tries to fulfill the contract, and the other players try to prevent it.2gameProgression

JellbyThere's only a limited number of [blue]types of bid[/blue] that can be made. Jellby started by bidding "Abundance", and Luna Shadow passed. We can only bid something higher than the current bid or pass. We'll see later what the different bids or contracts mean. For now, just click "[red]Pass[/red]" at the top.1buttonBid_0

Jellbykeifrecl passed too, so Jellby won the bid and becomes the "taker" of this hand, which is indicated by this [blue]hand icon[/blue]. The [blue]contract[/blue] (Abundance) and the [blue]target[/blue] (9 tricks) are shown in the sidebar on the right.1declarer_icon

Jellbykeifrecl was the "dealer" for this hand, which is indicated by this [blue]cards icon[/blue]. The first player to bid and to play is the one next to the dealer in the direction of play, as indicated by the [blue]arrow[/blue] at the center of the table. During a game, you can click on the arrow to change the order in which the players are displayed (it doesn't change the game for other players).2dealer_icon

Jellby[tip] If you are familiar with trick-taking games, the play is quite conventional, you have to follow suit if you can, and play any card (not necessarily trumps) otherwise. There's no obligation to play a higher card. !!! The next couple of comments are for those not familiar with trick-taking games.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

JellbyA *trick* is a "round" of played cards, one from each player. The player who played the highest valued card wins the trick. The first player plays (leads) any card, then the other players have to play a card of the same suit if they can (follow suit). If they have no card of that suit, they can play any other card.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

JellbyThe values of the cards go from 2 (lowest) to king, and ace (highest). In each hand there will usually be a [blue]trump suit[/blue], that is indicated in the right sidebar. Cards of the trump suit have more value than any other suit, so the highest trump card will win the trick. If there are no cards of the trump suit in a trick, the highest card of the led suit wins the trick.5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

Jellby[tip] The [blue]trump card[/blue] is the last card dealt, and it's used to decide the trump suit. Since it's the last card, we know the dealer has it.7trumpcardontable

JellbyNow the [blue]trump suit[/blue] changed! This is because the Abundance contract allows the taker to choose a trump suit, instead of the one decided by the trump card. [tip] It seems Jellby has many (or high) hearts.1trumpBlock

JellbyBefore the play begins, note what this [blue]target[/blue] means. Jellby will get positive points if they manage to win 9 tricks or more (only the number of tricks matters, not which cards are in them). If they win fewer, they'll lose points. [tip] So our objective in this hand is to prevent Jellby from winning tricks, it's 3 against 1.2gameTarget

JellbyJellby started by leading clubs, and Luna Shadow played the highest clubs. We are forced to play clubs, but since Jellby already lost this trick, we can play the lowest possible clubs. Just click on the [red]4 of clubs[/red] to play it.1myhand_item_18

Jellby[tip] In case you didn't notice, keifrecl just played the 2 of clubs. This was the trump card shown initially, before Jellby changed the trump suit. We knew keifrecl had that card, because they're the dealer in this hand.1dealer_icon

JellbyThe winner of a trick leads the next one, so Luna Shadow starts playing the next trick, and they decide to play clubs again. We are still forced to play clubs, and there's no need to play a high one, so play the [red]6 of clubs[/red].1myhand_item_31

JellbyOops! Jellby didn't have any clubs, and played the 7 of hearts, which is the trump suit they chose. As a trump, it beats all the clubs, and wins the trick. Now they have 1 trick out the 9 they need, as indicated next to this [blue]deck icon[/blue]. [tip] We could have done nothing to prevent it, since we were forced to play clubs. Maybe if Luna Shadow had led a different suit...1playertabletrickswonicon_38923250

JellbySo the play continues, trick by trick, until the whole hand is played. This is not a strategy guide, so we will not discuss that further, and will fast-forward to the end of the hand.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

JellbyWell, it seems Jellby didn't manage to win 9 tricks. To score the hand, they have to pay each of the other players an amount that depends on the contract and how far they were from fulfilling it. In this case it's *17 points* (3 times a base score of 5, plus 2 for 1 extra missing trick). Each other player wins *17 points* and Jellby loses 3×17 = *51 points*.1popin_tableWindow

JellbyIf they had won 9 or more tricks, each other player would have to pay them a corresponding amount of points instead: 15 for 9 tricks, 17 for 10 tricks, etc.2popin_tableWindow

JellbySo it's time to start the bidding for the next hand. Luna Shadow passed, so we have (almost) all the [blue]possible bids[/blue] to choose from. This is a good time to explain them. They are sorted from left to right, from easiest to most difficult, and the corresponding scores (won or lost) go from lower to higher.1buttonBid_0

Jellby[blue]*Prop*[/blue] means that we "propose" to form a team with another player (we don't know who, it will be whoever accepts the proposal) and win *at least 8 tricks* (counting both players together), with the trump suit selected by the trump card. After someone bids Prop, it will be possible to bid [blue]*Cop*[/blue] to accept the proposal and play as a partner of the first bidder.2buttonBid_1

Jellby[blue]*Solo*[/blue] means that we will win *at least 5 tricks* with the trump suit selected by the trump card, but alone, all the other players against us.3buttonBid_3

Jellby[blue]*Misère*[/blue] means that we will win *no trick at all*, and there will be no trump suit. So only the highest card in the led suit will win each trick, and all other suits lose it.4buttonBid_4

Jellby[blue]*Abundance*[/blue] is, like Solo, 3 against 1, but now the target is *at least 9 tricks* and the taker chooses the trump suit (it can be the selected trump suit). After someone bids Abundance, it is possible to overbid it with [blue]*Abundance in trumps*[/blue], which is just Abundance with the selected trump suit.5buttonBid_5

Jellby[blue]*Misére Ouverte*[/blue] is like Misère (win *no trick at all*, no trump suit), but after playing the first trick our cards will be displayed face up for everyone to see. We still choose which card to play, but they'll see all of them.6buttonBid_7

Jellby[blue]*Abundance Declared*[/blue] means we will win *all 13 tricks* playing alone, like Solo and Abundance, but with no trump suit. In this case the taker leads the first trick.7buttonBid_8

JellbyThere are game settings to choose what happens if all four players pass in the bidding for a hand, and whether or not the cards are fully shuffled between hands. For now, we don't have a particularly good hand, so click "[red]Pass[/red]".8buttonBid_0

Jellbykeifrecl bid [blue]Prop[/blue], and Jellby accepted the proposal by bidding [blue]Cop[/blue]. So now both of them form a team, with the objective of winning [blue]8 tricks[/blue], while Luna Shadow and us try to prevent that.1accepter_icon
