This tutorial exists thanks to: StefanDK
0000
StefanDKWelcome to the mystical realm of *Small World*, where many races compete to conquer the world - and get rich along the way, of course! [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edf83ec4c8.93505088.jpg[/img] [tip] The selected map and game length are adjusted based on the number of players. [tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer.1pagemaintitletext000
StefanDKThe goal of the game is to conquer and control *regions* on the map in order to gain *Victory Points* (VP), also known as *coins*. You achieve this by using the unique *powers* or *bonuses* of your chosen race. Eventually, you will also want to switch to a new *race*.2pagemaintitletext000
StefanDKThe player box shows your current score (*Victory Points*/*coins*). You cannot see your opponent's score.3player_board_89954995000
StefanDKThe game lasts the number of rounds indicated by the numbered *crowns* on the board. This game lasts *10 rounds*, but the number of rounds varies based on the number of players. Each round, you will perform actions related to conquering or changing races and score *coins* (*Victory Points*) along the way.4sw_token_round000sw_token_round 1
StefanDKThe winner is the player with the most *Victory Points*. Only your own score is visible until the game ends, at which point the scores of other players are revealed. [tip] You can see the scores for the last round by clicking *Show previous scores*.5player_board_89954995000sw_show_previous 1
StefanDKYou begin by choosing a *race* from six available options. The *[red]first race[/red]* is free. The *[green]next race[/green]* costs 1 *coin*, and the *[blue]following race[/blue]* costs 2 coins, and so on. The cost is shown by *crossed-out coins* below each *race banner*, like this example showing a 2-coin cost: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edf859b888.35205874.jpg[/img]6o-market000sw_combo_3 2 sw_combo_2 3 sw_combo_1 1
StefanDKYou start the game with *5 coins*, so all shown *races* are available for you to choose from. [tip] After a player selects a race, a new race is automatically revealed as the 6th option.7sw_market_slot_0000
StefanDKEach race has a *special power*, shown by a symbol in the middle of the card. Additionally, each race has a *bonus power*, which was randomly assigned before the game began. These combinations of powers can be quite potent! [tip] You can hover over the cards to read more. 8o-market000
StefanDKBoth the race banner and special power badge display two numbers. Add these together to determine the number of *race tokens* you will receive. Yes, a bit of basic math is required :-) Race tokens are used for conquering *regions*, which earns you Victory Points.9sw_market_slot_5000
StefanDKIn a standard game, you can view details on all *race banners* and *special power badges* by clicking a small *info icon* to the right of each race. However, this feature is unavailable in the tutorial.10sw_race_front_8000
StefanDKNext, let us choose the first available race, *Orcs*. Their *special power* grants *1 coin* for each non-empty region they conquer. These Orcs love a good fight! Their *bonus power* lets them build a *fortress* in any *region* they control, which provides *1 coin* and *1 defense* for the region. You cannot click the race yourself so press *continue*.11sw_market_slot_5000sw_combo_1 1
StefanDKReady to unleash the Orcs on the map? New races enter the map from the border, so you must start by conquering a *border region*. This region cannot be a *lake* or a *sea*, so forget about swimming in the central lake for now! [tip] Some races can break these rules in specific ways.1pagemaintitletext672115e1477af00
StefanDKStart by *conquering* the swamp region in the bottom-middle, which is controlled by the neutral *Lost Tribes*. This conquest will earn you *1 coin*. !!! In this tutorial, you can do this only by clicking *continue*. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edf870b816.60968257.jpg[/img] [tip] Some regions contain special icons, such as the *mine*. Certain races or bonuses provide extra coins for controling such regions.2pagemaintitletext672115e1477af00
StefanDKNotice how you removed the *Lost Tribe* and placed 3 orcs (*race tokens*) in the region? This was necessary because the region had 2 *defense* (1 base defense from the region itself and 1 defense from the *Lost Tribe*). You always need one more token than the total defense, hence the need for 3 *race tokens*.1pagemaintitletext672115f0c728000
StefanDKYou have 5 orcs left, shown by "x5" on the *race tokens* icon in the player info box. The next region to conquer must be *adjacent* to one you already control. We will target another region with a *Lost Tribe* for the 1 coin bonus. Try to calculate the cost of conquering it, then press *continue*. :-) [tip] Always keep track of your remaining *race tokens*. 2pagemaintitletext672115f0c728000sw_player_panel_1 1
StefanDKIf you guessed 3 *race tokens*, you were correct! [tip] In a normal game, you can hover over the region and its inhabitants to see the number of *race tokens* required for conquest. We chose the *farmland* region. Next, we will conquer another *Lost Tribe* region. Click *continue*.1pagemaintitletext672115f7666fd00
StefanDKFor the last conquest, you needed *3 race tokens*, but you only had 2! A *reinforcement die* was rolled. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edf88b9af0.73633373.jpg[/img] This die is rolled only if needed, and only on the final conquest action of the turn. Fortunately, you rolled a 1, which added +1 to your tokens, letting you succeed with 3 attack against 3 defense.1pagemaintitletext672115fbaa91800
StefanDKNow that the conquering phase is complete, we can use our *Fortified* bonus power to place a *Fortress* in any region we control. A *fortress* adds *1 defense* and provides *1 coin*. You can place one each round, but only while the race is active (not in *decline*). We will place it in the grassland region to boost defense and support those 2 orcs.3pagemaintitletext672115fbaa91800
StefanDKDid you notice there is now only one *race token* per region? Now your region with the fortress looks like this: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edf8a311a1.98090309.jpg[/img]1pagemaintitletext67211605af32200
StefanDKThis happens during the *redeployment phase*, where all but one *race token* in each of your regions return to your hand. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edf8bfc781.49006530.jpg[/img] We will let the tutorial *redeploy* (distribute) the *race tokens* on the regions without *defense bonuses*.2pagemaintitletext67211605af32200sw_player_panel_1 1
StefanDK(Please close the scored Victory Points popup) Now, we will let the opponent take their turn. They will follow the same process you just did. Sit tight and click *continue*.1pagemaintitletext672116145ce7800
StefanDK(Please close the popup) A lot just happened, but fortunately, you knew most of it! [tip] *The Halflings* have a unique power: They can dig giant holes in two regions, preventing opponents from conquering them!1pagemaintitletext67211682b203400
StefanDKThe holes dug by the Halflings stop us from conquering all western regions from our southern regions. They also heavily defend the northern forest region. We must now decide whether to continue our *conquest* or put our race in *Decline*. Click *continue* for now.2button_conquest67211682b203400
StefanDKIf you continue conquering regions, you have 5 *race tokens* available - not 8. This is because you control 3 regions, each needing 1 *race token*. [tip] You can abandon one or more regions to free up *race tokens* for conquest.3button_conquest67211682b203400
StefanDKAlternatively, you might put your race in *Decline*, for example, if you have too few *race tokens* to continue conquering, or if a special power makes it advantageous. This is not the case in this game just yet. Later, you will see what happens during a *Decline*. !!! Do [red]*not*[/red] use the Decline action yet, as it will cause an error.4button_decline67211682b203400
StefanDKFor now, choose *Conquest with 5 troops*.5button_conquest67211682b203410button_conquest 1
StefanDKAs mentioned, you can abandon a region. However, we will not do that right now. Click *Ready to Conquest*.1button_conquest67211692eaa1310button_conquest 1
StefanDKYou already know how conquest works, so we will now play through a few turns without stopping. Click *continue* and watch the game unfold.1pagemaintitletext672116986cb8400
StefanDK(Close the popup, please) Now, it is our opponent's turn again. We will just watch the game progress for a bit.1pagemaintitletext672116c14414a00
StefanDKThe *Halflings'* last attack on a region was unsuccessful due to a blank die roll. Even so, it was a free attempt that could have gained them a region, but not this time. Now, the troops (including those from the unsuccessful conquest) will be redeployed.1pagemaintitletext672116f68c27d00
StefanDK(Please close the popup) Now you know the basics. We will take another round without going into *Decline*. Choose *Conquest with 3 troops* and let us continue.1button_conquest672117012fbd610button_conquest 1
StefanDK(Please close the popup) Instead of attacking with 3 Orcs, we abandoned two regions, which now has no *race tokens*. This allowed us to attack with 5 Orcs, but it cost us 2 *coins* in regional income. Now, we will let the opponent take their turn. [tip] Please keep a close eye on your farmland region as the turn progresses. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edf8d77ee9.68101290.jpg[/img] Press *continue*.1pagemaintitletext67211732bca5800
StefanDKThose *Halflings* have conquered our farmland region! Let us review what happened to our 3 *race tokens* there: We lost 1 *race token* in the attack, and the remaining 2 *race tokens* were removed and returned to your hand. Additionally, the fortress in the region was destroyed. How rude! The *reinforcement die* was rolled again. The attack could have failed, but unfortunately, it succeeded.1pagemaintitletext6721174c199ea00
StefanDK(Please close the popup.) Now, we should do something new. Let’s put our race into *Decline*! Click *Put your race in Decline* and click *Confirm*. !!! You may see this popup two times, maybe in two different positions. It is just a small glitch in the tutorial.1button_decline6721175ab63f310button_confirm 1
StefanDK(Click anywhere to close the score popup) When you *decline*, you gain 1 coin for each region controlled by that race. All the relevant *race tokens* are flipped, making them look similar to the *Lost Tribes*. You continue to earn Victory Points for these regions. [tip] When you *decline* again, the previous declined race will be removed. Now, we will let the opponent take their turn.1pagemaintitletext6721176597a0a00
StefanDK(Close the popup - click anywhere) Now, we need to choose a new *race*. Let us go with the *Ratmen*. This costs *4 coins*, as shown by the crossed-out coins below the *race banner*. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edf8f3de07.45948308.jpg[/img] [tip] Because of your payment, there will be a 1-coin discount on the first *4 races* next time a *race* is chosen. !!! Due to a tutorial glitch, please press continue.1sw_power_front_136721179588cee00sw_combo_7 1
StefanDKYou know what to do from here. Check out the *race banner* and *special power badge* to learn about the Ratmen. When points are scored, you gain *Victory Points* for both your active race and the declined race. [tip] Normally, you can have only one race in decline, but some special powers allow you to have multiple races in decline.1pagemaintitletext6721179fb292400
StefanDKThat is it! In a regular game, play continues until the final round is complete. Thanks to the Designer, *Philippe Keyaerts*, artist *Miguel Coimbra*, and publisher *Days of Wonder* for bringing this game to life. And a special *thank you* to BGA Designer *Moof* for the digital edition! If you enjoyed this tutorial, consider giving it *5 stars* to help it reach more people.2pagemaintitletext6721179fb292400
