shadowphiarWelcome to Ponte del Diavolo. In this game, your aim is to place groups of four orthogonally adjacent tiles (these are called Islands) and link them using bridges, while preventing your opponent from doing the same.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
shadowphiarIn this tutorial we will be playing using the light wood tiles. Each turn, you place two tiles of your own colour (or a bridge, but we'll get to that later). They can be adjacent but they don't have to be. Tiles are never moved, and only one tile occupies any given square. Place your first tile in the indicated square by clicking the board.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment010interact_10_2 17
shadowphiarAnd now place a second tile in this square:2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment610d3d5a9c70b10interact_1_10 18
shadowphiarGood. As a special rule at the beginning, the second player may choose to play the rest of the game using the light wood tiles. However in this case, they have not, and simply taken a turn to place two red wood tiles.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment610d3e04ea37800
shadowphiarThe opponent is trying to gain control over the bottom left corner of the board, so we'll place two tiles here to make sure we don't get blocked out.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment610d3e04ea37810interact_2_10 17 interact_3_10 18
shadowphiarPlace a second tile here.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment610d560c94d6f10interact_3_10 18
shadowphiarThis turn we'll place our first tile here.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment610d60ba8c33910interact_1_9 17
shadowphiarWe have created an island, a group of four tiles in our colour, connected orthogonally. Each island is worth one point.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment610d6104af76500interact_1_9 3 interact_1_10 3 interact_2_10 3 interact_3_10 3
shadowphiarAn island can be any shape of four orthogonally adjacent tiles.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment610d6104af76500interact_5_4 3 interact_5_5 3 interact_5_6 3 interact_5_7 3 interact_6_2 3 interact_7_1 3 interact_7_2 3 interact_7_5 3 interact_8_1 3 interact_8_4 3 interact_8_5 3 interact_8_8 3 interact_8_9 3 interact_9_5 3 interact_9_8 3 interact_9_9 3
shadowphiarWe cannot place any tiles anywhere adjacent to an island of our own colour, even diagonally. Instead, we must try to build more islands and connect them together using bridges. A connected group of islands is worth more points than each island on its own.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment610d6104af76500interact_2_8 13 interact_4_9 13 interact_4_10 13
shadowphiarPlace the second tile here. Maybe we'll be able to build a bridge to it in the next turn.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment610d6104af76510interact_3_7 18
shadowphiarOn any turn, you can place a bridge *instead of* two tiles. A bridge spans the gap between two tiles of your own colour two spaces away from each other in any direction (orthogonally, diagonally, or a knight's move). The centre of the bridge must be over water. Only one bridge may start or end on any given tile.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment610d610b8474c00interact_1_9 3 interact_2_8 3 interact_3_7 3
shadowphiarOur opponent has anticipated us trying to build a bridge here, and has placed a tile to block us. Bridges can only be built over water, never over a tile of either colour.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment610d62637c6d500interact_1_9 3 interact_2_8 13 interact_3_7 3
shadowphiarInstead, we will place tiles in these two spaces. Maybe we will still be able to build a bridge off our first island, but also we're limiting the opponent's options for building his island out to the right.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment610d62637c6d510interact_5_8 17 interact_6_9 18
shadowphiarPlace the second tile.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment610d673d447f810interact_6_9 18
shadowphiarSadly the opponent has blocked our plans. A bridge cannot be built crossing any other bridge.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment610d67706314f00interact_3_10 2 interact_4_9 13 interact_5_8 2
shadowphiarHowever, we have the chance to complete another island.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment610d67706314f10interact_6_8 18 interact_6_10 17
shadowphiarNote that the opponent now cannot extend this group of tiles any further, as he cannot place tiles under the bridge and we have blocked his options to expand to the right side. Any group of tiles fewer than 4 is called a "Sandbank" and is worth no points. However, you can use them to link other islands together.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment610d95ac179fb00interact_4_9 13 interact_4_10 13 interact_5_9 1 interact_5_10 1
shadowphiarClearly at this point, the opponent is preparing to build a bridge in one of these two positions. We can block them both by placing tiles in their central positions. 1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment610d9606122d910interact_1_6 2 interact_1_7 18 interact_1_8 2 interact_2_9 1 interact_3_8 17 interact_4_7 1
shadowphiarAt this point, we could place a bridge here (and we eventually will want to). However, notice that the opponent can no longer stop us from doing so:1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment610db58a513a000interact_3_8 2 interact_4_8 2 interact_5_8 2
shadowphiarThey cannot place a tile here, for it is (diagonally) adjacent to their island.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment610db58a513a000interact_1_8 1 interact_2_8 1 interact_2_9 1 interact_3_9 1 interact_4_8 13
shadowphiarThey cannot place a bridge between these tiles, as there is not clear water between them.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment610db58a513a000interact_4_7 1 interact_5_8 13 interact_5_9 1
shadowphiarAnd even after placing another tile, they would not be able to build a bridge here because there is already a bridge starting on the leftmost tile.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment610db58a513a000interact_3_9 13 interact_4_8 2 interact_5_7 2
shadowphiarSo instead we can do more urgent things, which the opponent would still be able to block. First we will complete this island before he builds a bridge over it.5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment610db58a513a010interact_1_8 1 interact_2_7 17 interact_3_6 1
shadowphiarAnd then we will try to put some pressure on the positions in the centre of the board.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment610dbb26c2fa110interact_5_5 18
shadowphiarWe'll fast-forward a few moves until the board is more developed.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment610e309e7f1b000
shadowphiarNotice that the opponent has just prepared space to build a bridge on this diagonal, but we cannot block it by placing a tile (because that space is adjacent to one of our islands).1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment611180bf501aa00interact_5_8 3 interact_6_6 1 interact_6_8 3 interact_6_10 3 interact_7_7 13 interact_8_8 1
shadowphiarSo instead, let's practice building a bridge here. Click a tile where you would like to bridge to start. The game will show the options of where it can finish. !!! For technical reasons, in this tutorial please just click the 'Continue' button instead of the board at this step. 2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment611180bf5172000interact_6_8 17
shadowphiarThis time, we'll finish the bridge here.6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6111a4880a2ba10interact_8_6 18
shadowphiarAnd the bridge is built. Bridges are not only useful for blocking your opponent and controlling areas of the board, but more importantly, connecting groups of islands together will increase their score as well. 1 island on its own is worth 1 point. A group of 2 joined islands is worth 3 points. A group of 3 joined islands is worth 6 points, and so on.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6111a48a5073d00
shadowphiarWe have just turned a sandbank into an island, so it is now worth points. Currently it is part of a group of two islands, so they are worth 3 points in total.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6112a90e1fc1800interact_5_8 2 interact_6_8 2 interact_6_9 2 interact_6_10 2 interact_7_7 3 interact_8_5 2 interact_8_6 2 interact_8_7 2 interact_9_6 2
shadowphiarThe game continues until one of the players is no longer able to place tiles. They can continue playing bridges, but if they instead choose to pass then the game will end.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6112a90e1fc1800
shadowphiarIf it was the player using light wood tiles who passed, then the player using red wood tiles gets one more turn (so the players have played the same number of times). If the player using red wood tiles passes, the players have already taken the same number of turns and the game is over immediately!3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6112a90e1fc1800
shadowphiarThis is the end of the game. There is only one space left where the opponent can play - and two tiles are placed in a turn, so they can't go there. (Note the space above is not allowed, because it would create an island with other tiles already diagonally adjacent.) Every other space is either under a bridge or adjacent to one of their own islands.1board61157b0c5f16800interact_7_9 13 interact_7_10 3
shadowphiarThe game ends, and we have won! We have one group of four islands (10 points), one group of 2 islands (3 points) and two individual islands (1 point each) for a total of 15. Thank you for watching, now you can play Ponte del Diavolo too!1board611593070753800interact_1_7 2 interact_1_9 1 interact_1_10 1 interact_2_3 3 interact_2_4 3 interact_2_5 3 interact_2_7 2 interact_2_10 1 interact_3_1 3 interact_3_3 3 interact_3_7 2 interact_3_8 2 interact_3_10 1 interact_4_1 3 interact_4_2 3 interact_4_5 1 interact_4_8 2 interact_5_1 3 interact_5_5 1 interact_5_6 1 interact_5_8 2 interact_6_1 3 interact_6_5 1 interact_6_8 2 interact_6_9 2 interact_6_10 2 interact_7_3 2 interact_7_7 2 interact_8_1 2 interact_8_2 2 interact_8_3 2 interact_8_4 2 interact_8_5 2 interact_8_6 2 interact_8_7 2 interact_9_6 2
