Lady_JaneHello friends and welcome to [blue]*Number Drop*[/blue], where you combine luck and strategy in an attempt to place shapes and numbers in the best way possible. Think of it like a mix of *Tetris* and *Yatzee* rolled (literally) into one! 1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
Lady_JaneUnfortunately the mechanics don't allow for an interactive tutorial, but *have no fear!* We'll use pictures and examples to learn this fun and competitive game. *No game will have you beat!* :)2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
Lady_JaneThe goal of [blue]*Number Drop*[/blue] is to end the game with more points than your opponent. You can play it solo for practice too. There are several ways to earn points and even one way (that we'll get to later) to lose 5 points. 3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
Lady_JaneThe first category of points comes from *grouping numbers together*. There's a column for groups of [green]*identical numbers (3, 3, 3...)*[/green] and one for [green]*consecutive numbers (1, 2, 3...)*[/green]. Different lengths will earn different amounts of points.4cell-95293413-5-sequence000cell-95293413-0-identical 10 cell-95293413-0-sequence 10
Lady_JaneThe second way you earn points is by *filling all of the spaces across a row.* Ok, enough about that for now. Let's see how the game is played, and we'll come back to the points later. 5cell-95293413-5-10000cell-95293413-5-10 14
Lady_JaneThe game begins with each player *placing a starting number.* Since you're player 1, your starting number is 1. Player 2 starts with a 2, if there were a player 3 they would start with 3, and so on. You can place the number anywhere on the bottom row. In this game we'll place it in the far left corner.1cell-95293413-0-065af04f039c0000cell-95293413-0-0 8
Lady_JaneNow every turn after this, the number and shape dice are rolled and you decide how to arrange them. [green]*[tip]*[/green] Both players get the same numbers and shape and play at the same time. After the turn, we get to see what our opponent(s) decided to do.2nb-dice-content-265af04f039c0000nb-dice-4 8 nb-dice-0 8 nb-dice-1 8 nb-dice-2 8 nb-dice-3 8
Lady_JaneWe'll call this box our "[green]*sketch pad.*[/green]" You can use these buttons to [red]*rotate*[/red] and [red]*flip*[/red] your shape until it's set up the way you want and move it [red]*left or right*[/red] before dropping it. 3shape-constructor-holder65af04f03b1b000shape-constructor-holder 8
Lady_JaneThe [red]*trashcan*[/red] will reset it to the starting position and allow you to start over. [green]*[tip]*[/green] You can see a description of what each button does by hovering over it.4control-rotate-right65af04f03b1b000shape-constructor-holder 8
Lady_JaneThe shape dice will tell you which shape you'll be playing with each turn. In the case of a *star* or wild, you can choose one of these 5 shapes. 5shape-selector-265af04f03b1b000
Lady_JaneYou can always see the preview of how it will land on your grid and can select your number placement either on the preview or in the sketchpad. [red]*!!! One difference to note from Tetris, is that you can't shift or rotate a piece as it falls, but rather you do this before letting it fall.[/red] So it's important to see through the preview how your tetromino will land.*6cell-95293413-2-565af04f03b1b000cell-95293413-0-3 12 shape-constructor-cell-0-2 11
Lady_JaneIn the first roll you got the *S* looking shape, with the numbers *4, 7, 2, and a star*. [green]*[tip]*[/green] The *star* indicates a *wild* and opens up additional number options. While the dice have the numbers 1 - 7 on them, the star allows you to choose from any of those, plus *0 (zero), 8 (eight), or 9 (nine)*. 1nb-dice-265af05e3b064500nb-dice-0 8
Lady_JaneUsing the 0, 8, or 9 opens additional possibilities and allows you to earn the elusive *8 point consecutive* numbers. You can also get an 8 point identical group, but can only choose one 8 point play per game. [green]*[tip]*[/green] Is going for the 8 pointer worth it? You'll have to decide for yourself ;) . If interested, there are some debates on this within the forums. 2cell-95293413-0-bonus65af05e3b064500cell-95293413-0-bonus 8
Lady_JaneFor our first roll, we chose to go for the consecutive numbers *1, 2, 3 (using the star), and 4*. By flipping the shape right to left, we positioned it to sit snuggly over the 1 we placed earlier and positioned the numbers within the shape so that they connected in the right order. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed709bb6d5.92589414.jpg[/img] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed70bec888.38726670.jpg[/img] 3cell-95293413-2-265af05e3b064500
Lady_JaneEach turn, you get a chance to record *points*. Once a number is used, it can't be used again. You can see this by the colors on the grid. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed70dfaf25.80827393.jpg[/img] You can also *pass*. [blue]*!!!Numbers in your series must connect orthogonally (right, left, up, down) and you must select the numbers in order (1,2,3...) when claiming points*[/blue]4cell-95293413-2-265af05e3b1bee00
Lady_JaneSince our 4 is blocked by the 7, it can't go any further and therefore we chose to take the points now. The corresponding option on the score columns can also only be used once, which you can see by the 4 in the consecutive column being circled. 5cell-95293413-1-sequence65af05e3b1bee00
Lady_JaneIf you're able to score all of the point level combinations in either the consecutive or identical groupings, you're awarded an [blue]*additional 10 points!*[/blue]6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment65af05e3b1bee00
Lady_JaneIn this next roll we got the L shaped tetromino, and the numbers 2, 2, *star*, and 6. Let's go for identical numbers this time. 7nb-dice-265af05e3b1bee00
Lady_JaneThis time we rotated the shape so it lays flat, and placed three 2s in a row. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed71264426.38542664.jpg[/img] The third 2 comes from the star where we can choose any number. By laying it this way, we're keeping it open if more 2s come in a future roll. 1cell-95293413-1-665af066aa8e7300
Lady_JaneAnd just like we hoped for, we got another 2 and another star! Let's place these with the other 2s, and *score a 5 point identical* grouping. 2nb-dice-265af066aa9fa400
Lady_Jane[green]*Voila!*[/green] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed713fa917.90149544.jpg[/img] We laid the shape flat, filling up the second row completely, without any gaps! By doing this, we not only got our 5 points, but another 2 for the row!1cell-95293413-1-1065af0706ab8ff00cell-95293413-0-10 11
Lady_Jane[green]*Uh oh!*[/green] While showing you the game, I forgot to keep an eye on our opponent! Let's look at the opponent's *score sheet* for a moment. 2block-tile-265af0706ae5cf00cell-95010662-5-identical 15 cell-95010662-5-sequence 15
Lady_JaneThey were able to get their [green]5 point identical[/green] group *and* their [green]5 point consecutive[/green] group, thus the *C* is now circled. 3cell-95010662-2-block65af0706ae5cf00cell-95010662-2-block 11
Lady_JaneWhen a player gets both groupings of the same number, and the other player has not yet, it starts a process for a *blocking* shape. You can see the *C* is now circled on our shared area as well. Once this happens, the next time the dice roll results in *one of the dice being a star*, any player who hasn't scored both of those combos receives a corresponding block. 4block-265af0706ae5cf00cell-95010662-2-0 14
Lady_JaneThe block for *C* is the t-shaped block. You can see the other shapes for point value combos below. Since this roll ended with a star on one of our dice, our next turn will be deciding how to place this block. 5block-tile-265af0706ae5cf00block-tile-2 8
Lady_JaneYou can still be strategic with this, flipping or rotating the same as our typical tetrominos. The difference is the values will all be *X*, instead of a number we can use for scoring. 6cell-95293413-2-565af0706afa2200cell-95293413-4-3 8 cell-95293413-3-3 8 cell-95293413-2-2 8 cell-95293413-2-3 8 cell-95293413-2-4 8
Lady_JaneNow, [blue]I was warned about how *smart* you are and how *astute your observational skills for games* happen to be.[/blue] So I feel I should mention, the *X's* in replay mode can be slightly confused about where to hang out sometimes. *Rest assured friends, this won't be an issue during game play.* ;)1cell-95293413-3-065af077a2472600
Lady_JaneWe did, in fact, move our T block all the way to the right. The X's above the 7 and 1 don't actually exist, so try to ignore those. Now I think you've gotten the general idea here, so *I'm going to move forward to the end of the game* where there are a couple of more things to explain. So *sit back, relax, and see if you agree with the choices of these players*. 2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment65af077a2472600cell-95293413-4-3 13 cell-95293413-4-5 8 cell-95293413-3-3 13 cell-95293413-3-5 8 cell-95293413-2-2 13 cell-95293413-2-3 13 cell-95293413-2-4 8 cell-95293413-2-5 8 cell-95293413-2-6 8
Lady_JaneOk, so remember at the very beginning when I mentioned a way to [red]*LOSE*[/red] points? I'm about to show you the end of the game. Either by choice, or by running out of choices, *someone will have to cross the [red]bold pink[/red] line towards the top of the grid.*2cell-95293413-10-565af0a7f1f73b00
Lady_JaneIf you notice, above the line the *score changes from +2 to -5*. You don't have to fill a row up there either, simply entering it will deduct 5 points from your scores. However, it also triggers the end of the game and the person with the highest score at that point wins. So if your opponent is far behind in points, it may be worth it. *Let's watch how these two finish up!*3cell-95293413-11-1065af0a7f1f73b00cell-95293413-11-10 8
Lady_Jane[red]*Ah ha!*[/red] So player 2 thought they could beat you and your *impressive ability to learn a game so quickly!* Well, they'll soon learn! The way they placed their tetromino put one of the numbers above the pink line, triggering the end of game and comparison of point. Notice how with only one number in that row, they automatically *lost 5 points.*1cell-95010662-11-1065af0ab677bdd00
Lady_JaneNow before we finish, there's one last [blue]*incredibly cool*[/blue] feature the game developers put in this game. You can toggle this switch to change the colors to a neon, almost blacklight type look, depending on your preference!2darkmode-switch65af0ab67b28a00
Lady_JaneAnd there you have it! Not too hard, right? *Now go out there and impress everyone with your number moving, shape rolling, observational, game playing skills!* Special thanks to [green]*Tisaac*[/green] for bringing this awesome adaptation of [blue]*Number Drop*[/blue] to [green]*BGA*[/green]! 3pagemaintitletext65af0ab67bcbb00
