Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed9b74d6e4.42777103.jpg[/img] Become the best metro network planner Paris has ever seen! Use overhead crossings to link the capital's iconic monuments, all while optimising shortcuts through the central platform! [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1maintitlebar_content000
Nekonyancer*Next Station: Paris* is very similar to *Next Station: London* and *Next Station: Tokyo,* both of which have been on BGA for quite some time. [green]If you're familiar with London or Tokyo,[/green] you only need to read through the next *5* steps of this tutorial. I will only cover Paris's unique features. [red]If you are *NOT* familiar with those games,[/red] *skip* the next five steps (press the spacebar six times).2maintitlebar_content000
Nekonyancer*Unique Feature #1: Central Platform*---This is Paris's [blue]*Central Platform.*[/blue] Despite it's massive size, it functions as a normal station. It counts as every shape. As the yellow lines indicate, it also counts as its own district.3nex_station_11941354_centralhub000nex_station_11941354_centralhub 2
Nekonyancer*Unique Feature #2: Overhead crossings*---These are Overhead Crossings.[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed9baa6b54.24081736.jpg[/img] They are the only points at which train lines can cross each other. Each Crossing that is passed through *once* is worth *2 points.* Each crossing that is passed through *twice* is worth *6 points.*4maintitlebar_content000
Nekonyancer*Unique Feature #3: Monuments*--- These are [red]*monuments.*[/red] They count as *wild* stations, so you can always draw a connection to one, regardless of what card is in play. Each train line is worth an extra *2 points* per monument it visits.5maintitlebar_content000nex_station_11941354_1_2 1 nex_station_11941354_9_2 1 nex_station_11941354_2_4 1 nex_station_11941354_10_5 1 nex_station_11941354_1_6 1 nex_station_11941354_6_7 1 nex_station_11941354_3_10 1 nex_station_11941354_7_10 1
NekonyancerIf you connect to a monument when a *Wild card* is in play... [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed9bc73d57.66621444.jpg[/img] ... it will trigger a *Guided Tour.* You can *immediately* continue the line from the monument to another station of any shape. [green]It's basically an extra turn, but it has to start from the monument.[/green]6maintitlebar_content000
Nekonyancer[blue]All in all, the scoring is as follows:[/blue] - *Line scores* (# of districts x # of stations in 1 district, + 2 per monument) - *Overhead crossings* (2 or 6 for each) - *Interchange stations* (2/5/9 points for each with 2/3/4 lines) - *Completed objectives* That's everything! Have fun! :D7maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerIf you're reading this, that means you've never played any *Next Station* games and you need a complete tutorial from the beginning. Right? Okay, good! [green]Here we go![/green]8maintitlebar_content000
Nekonyancer[red]This is your map of Paris![/red] Each player has an almost *identical* map. Each circled shape on the map represents a *station.* Throughout the game, players will be drawing lines between stations. At the end of the game, their lines will be scored according to various criteria. [green]Whoever has the most points after four rounds wins![/green]9nex_station_11941354_centralhub000
NekonyancerEach round, we will design a differently colored *line.* [green]*The pencil*[/green] in the top-right corner of our board indicates which line we have to start with. Looks like we're starting with green!10nex_movingpencil_green000nex_movingpencil_green 3
NekonyancerRemember how I said *almost* identical maps? The only difference is the *line colors.* At any given time, each player will be drawing a different color line on their personal map. [green]This tutorial was made from a solo replay though, so you don't have to worry about other players.[/green]11nex_movingpencil_green000
NekonyancerAs I mentioned before, lines must be drawn *between stations,* starting with the station that matches our line's *color.* That means we're starting [green]*here!*[/green]12nex_station_11941354_3_7000nex_station_11941354_3_7 3
NekonyancerEvery turn, a [blue]*card*[/blue] with a shape on it will be flipped over. All players must then draw a connection to a station with a matching shape. This card has a square, so we have to draw a line from our starting station to a [red]*square station.* [/red]13nex_card_station_current000nex_card_station_current 2 nex_station_11941354_1_1 1 nex_station_11941354_7_1 1 nex_station_11941354_2_2 1 nex_station_11941354_6_3 1 nex_station_11941354_4_4 1 nex_station_11941354_10_4 1 nex_station_11941354_4_6 1 nex_station_11941354_10_6 1 nex_station_11941354_8_8 1 nex_station_11941354_1_9 1 nex_station_11941354_8_10 1 nex_station_11941354_centralhub 1
NekonyancerBut we can't connect to just ANY square! We have to draw along *dotted lines.* Our [green]*starting station*[/green] has dotted lines connecting to [blue]*these stations.*[/blue]14maintitlebar_content000nex_station_11941354_3_4 2 nex_station_11941354_1_5 2 nex_station_11941354_4_6 2 nex_station_11941354_2_7 2 nex_station_11941354_3_7 3 nex_station_11941354_5_7 2 nex_station_11941354_3_8 2 nex_station_11941354_5_9 2
NekonyancerSo, we have to draw along a *dotted line,* and it must be to a *square* this turn... it looks like we have only two options. *1.* Click on the [green]*green station*[/green] (the green line's starting station). *2.* Click on the [blue]*square station*[/blue] to the north-east of the green station.15nex_station_11941354_4_6010nex_station_11941354_4_6 2 nex_station_11941354_3_7 3 nex_station_11941354_1_9 2
Nekonyancer*Great!* The old station card went away, and [green]*new card*[/green] zoomed in to replace it. There are only *11* cards total, and they are represented by the long column of icons to the right of this card.1nex_card_station_current6632f1095c59e00nex_card_station_current 3
NekonyancerAn *X* was drawn over this icon to show that we've already seen the Blue Square card. We won't see it again this round!2nex_ministation_1_underground6632f1095c59e00
NekonyancerLet's take our next turn. According to the card, we need to connect to a *triangle* station this round! [red]*This station*[/red] is a valid choice, but instead, let's connect to the gigantic station in the middle. That's Paris's [blue]*Central Platform,*[/blue] and it counts as every shape!3nex_card_station_current6632f1095c59e00nex_station_11941354_5_7 1 nex_station_11941354_centralhub 2
Nekonyancer*1.* Select the [green]*square station*[/green] we connected to last turn. *2.* Click on the [blue]*Central Platform!*[/blue]4nex_card_station_current6632f1095c59e10nex_station_11941354_4_6 3 nex_station_11941354_centralhub 2
Nekonyancer[blue]Next turn![/blue] You know, our lines can extend from *either end* at any time. Let's try it now. *1.* Select our [green]*starting station.*[/green] *2.* Connect it to [blue]*this station!*[/blue]1nex_station_11941354_3_76632f1142068c10nex_station_11941354_3_7 3 nex_station_11941354_1_9 2
Nekonyancer[green]Ooh, we got a joker card![/green] This card allows us to connect to *any shape* this turn. But there's more! [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed9b901b98.76690560.jpg[/img] This icon represents a *Monument.* Monuments can be connected to on *any turn,* regardless of what shape is on the card, and each one will increase the line's score by 2 points!1nex_card_station_current6632f11c6436d00
NekonyancerIf we connect to a Monument when [blue]*this card*[/blue] is in play, it will trigger a *Guided Tour.* We can immediately draw another connection from the monument to another station of any shape. It's kind of like an *extra turn,* but it must start at the Monument!2nex_card_station_current6632f11c6436d00nex_card_station_current 2
NekonyancerHey, there's a monument right by the Central Platform! *1.* Select the [blue]*Central Platform.*[/blue] *2.* Select [red]*this monument.*[/red] *3.* Click on *Continue.* (This step is buggy in Tutorial Mode.) :(3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6632f11c6436d00nex_station_11941354_6_7 1 nex_station_11941354_centralhub 2
NekonyancerOkay, we connected to the monument. Now we have to draw the Guided Tour connection to *any* nearby station. But before we do, let's take a moment to learn about *districts* and *scoring.* Note all the *yellow lines* on our map. They divide Paris into 8 large districts and 5 small special districts.4maintitlebar_content6632f12ea6a0e00
NekonyancerEach of our train lines will score points equal to... [blue]The number of districts the line passes through[/blue] *multiplied by* [green]The largest number of stations the line passes through in a single district.[/green]5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6632f12ea6a0e00
NekonyancerOur green line has passed through stations in [red]*four districts*[/red] so far...6nex_station_11941354_6_76632f12ea6a0e00nex_station_11941354_4_6 1 nex_station_11941354_3_7 1 nex_station_11941354_6_7 1 nex_station_11941354_1_9 1 nex_station_11941354_centralhub 1
NekonyancerAnd the largest number of stations it passes through in a single district is [blue]*2.*[/blue]7nex_station_11941354_4_66632f12ea6a0e00nex_station_11941354_4_6 2 nex_station_11941354_3_7 2
NekonyancerThese facts are currently shown on our [blue]*scorecard.*[/blue] You can click on it to get a closer look. *4* (# of districts) *x 2* (stations in 1 district) *+ 2* (2 points per monument) *= 10* points for the green line... so far.8nex_scorepad_119413546632f12ea6a0e00nex_scorepad_11941354 2
NekonyancerLet's get back to that *Guided Tour* connection. Now that we know how our line is scored, [red]*where*[/red] do you think we should connect to? [blue]How can we maximize our score?[/blue]9nex_station_11941354_7_76632f12ea6a0e00nex_station_11941354_5_7 1 nex_station_11941354_7_7 1 nex_station_11941354_5_8 1 nex_station_11941354_6_8 1
NekonyancerWell, we can't reach any new districts from here, so instead, we should move to one of [blue]*these stations,*[/blue] increasing the number of connected stations in one district! Of those two stations, the Pentagon station gives us better options afterward. *Click on the monument, followed by the Pentagon station!*10nex_station_11941354_7_76632f12ea6a0e10nex_station_11941354_5_7 2 nex_station_11941354_7_7 13 nex_station_11941354_5_8 2 nex_station_11941354_6_8 13
NekonyancerIf we connect to a monument on a turn with [blue]*this particular card,*[/blue] it will trigger a *Guided Tour,* allowing us to draw an additional connection from that monument to any station!11nex_card_station_current6632f11c6436d00nex_card_station_current 2
NekonyancerThere's a monument next to the central platform! *1.* Click on the [blue]*Central Platform!*[/blue] *2.* Click on [red]*this monument!*[/red] *3.* Click on "Continue." (This step is buggy in Tutorial Mode.) :(12nex_station_11941354_6_76632f11c6436d00nex_station_11941354_6_7 1 nex_station_11941354_centralhub 2
Nekonyancer*Great!* Now we have [red]*3 stations*[/red] in one district! BGA already updated our scorecard. Our line score is up to *14!*1nex_station_11941354_7_76632f1550ba6500nex_station_11941354_4_6 1 nex_station_11941354_3_7 1 nex_station_11941354_5_8 1
Nekonyancer*Next turn!* We have a triangle. Let's connect down here to [red]*this monument*[/red] (remember, any card can be used to connect to a monument). We won't get a Guided Tour this time, but we'll score a lot of points, both for extending into a new district and for the monument itself! *Select the [green]Pentagon station[/green] and connect it to [red]this monument!*[/red]2nex_station_11941354_7_106632f1550ba6510nex_station_11941354_5_8 3 nex_station_11941354_7_10 1
NekonyancerNext, let's learn about *Overhead Crossings.* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed9be3f508.21850418.jpg[/img] They are the only points at which our lines are allowed to *cross* each other. Each crossing we pass through *once* is worth *2 points.* Each crossing we pass through *twice* is worth *6 points!*1nex_station_11941354_8_106632f1675058700
Nekonyancer*1.* Select this [blue]*monument.*[/blue] *2.* Connect it to this [red]*circle station,*[/red] passing through the overhead crossing!2nex_station_11941354_9_86632f1675058710nex_station_11941354_9_8 1 nex_station_11941354_7_10 2
Nekonyancer[blue]Whoa, did BGA just skip a card?[/blue] No, it didn't. The next card that appeared had a [blue]*Railway Switch*[/blue] icon on it. Whenever it appears, BGA immediately moves on to the next card and applies the [blue]*switch*[/blue] effect to it.1nex_ministation_TMP_std6632f16d0ee3b00nex_ministation_TMP_std 7
NekonyancerThe *Railway Switch* allows us to draw a connection that branches off the middle of our line, instead of one of the two ends. This branch can then be extended later, if we want. This gives us a lot of flexibility, though we still have to connect to a station of the indicated shape - a [red]*circle,*[/red] in this case.2nex_card_station_current6632f16d0ee3b00nex_card_station_current 1
NekonyancerWe could, for instance, create a connection between the [green]*green starting station*[/green] and [red]*this station,*[/red] which would score points for passing through an Overhead Crossing. Or we could connect the [green]*green one*[/green] to [blue]*this one,*[/blue] giving us more connected stations in a single district.3nex_card_station_current6632f16d0ee3b00nex_station_11941354_2_7 2 nex_station_11941354_3_7 3 nex_station_11941354_5_9 1
NekonyancerIn retrospect, getting more stations in the same district would have been the best play. But I opted to extend into another district instead. *1.* Select the [blue]*Central Platform.*[/blue] *2.* Create a branching path to [red]*this station!*[/red]4maintitlebar_content6632f16d0ee3b10nex_station_11941354_5_4 1 nex_station_11941354_centralhub 2
Nekonyancer*Ooh, another joker card.* We should connect to a monument if possible, so we can trigger another Guided Tour. [blue]Minimize this box. Do you see any monuments we can connect to?[/blue]1nex_card_station_current6632f1ad081c600
NekonyancerWe can draw a connection between [red]*these 2!*[/red] I'll take care of it for you because this step is buggy.2nex_station_11941354_2_76632f1ad081c600nex_station_11941354_1_6 1 nex_station_11941354_1_9 1
NekonyancerNow for our Guided Tour! This is going very well so far. *Connect the [blue]monument[/blue] to [red]this station![/red]*3maintitlebar_content6632f1ca1ca1c10nex_station_11941354_1_6 2 nex_station_11941354_2_7 1
NekonyancerThe next card is a pentagon, and it's the last of the [blue]5 blue cards[/blue] in the deck! When all 5 blue cards have been played, the round ends! That means a round can be as short as *5 turns* and as long as *10.*1nex_card_station_current6632f1ceca61e00nex_card_station_current 2
NekonyancerIf you can't be bothered to keep track of the blue cards yourself, don't worry. This sign will warn you when the round is ending!2nex_plstationinfo_119413546632f1ceca61e00
NekonyancerBefore we draw our last connection, I'll go over *Pencil Powers,* which is an extra module that is turned off by default. Pencil Powers give each player a random special ability that they can trigger *once* during the round.3nex_pencilpower_26632f1ceca61e00
NekonyancerWe got an ability that allows us to have a station count as *two* connected stations. Remember, one of the factors of our line's score is the number of connected stations in a single district. [green]Oh man. This is going to be one heck of a line.[/green]4nex_pencilpower_26632f1ceca61e00
Nekonyancer*Click on [blue]this button.[/blue] Alternatively, click on [green]"Use Pencil Power"[/green] at the top!* Yeah, I know, it didn't work. Don't worry, it will work in a real game. Click on *continue* instead.5nex_pencilpower_26632f1ceca61e00btn_usepower 3 nex_pencilpower_2 2
NekonyancerNow we have to select a station to count double. We should definitely pick one of [green]*these stations.*[/green] Again, it's buggy. Nothing I can do about it. Click *"Continue."*6maintitlebar_content6632f1da5621900nex_station_11941354_1_6 3 nex_station_11941354_4_6 3 nex_station_11941354_2_7 3 nex_station_11941354_3_7 3 nex_station_11941354_5_8 3
NekonyancerOkay, now to draw our last connection. It has to be to a *pentagon.* Let's go over our options, shall we? Can we connect [red]*these two stations?*[/red] No, our line can't cross over itself. Can we connect [blue]*these two?*[/blue] No, the green line has already connected to the Central Platform, and can't connect there again.7player_name_119413546632f1deb4a6200nex_station_11941354_2_7 1 nex_station_11941354_3_8 1 nex_station_11941354_9_8 2 nex_station_11941354_centralhub 2
NekonyancerI see [red]*two*[/red] [blue]*options.*[/blue] Both options will extend into another district, but [blue]*this one*[/blue] will also pass through an Overhead Crossing. *Connect those [blue]two stations![/blue]*8player_name_119413546632f1deb4a6210nex_station_11941354_5_2 1 nex_station_11941354_9_3 2 nex_station_11941354_5_4 1 nex_station_11941354_9_8 2
Nekonyancer[red]Okay, that's the end of the first round![/red] We swapped our green pencil for a purple one so we can start plotting the purple line!1nex_movingpencil_purple6632f1fd8db6000
NekonyancerThe first card of the round is a Triangle. It looks like there are [blue]*two triangle stations*[/blue] near the [red]*Purple starting station.*[/red]2nex_station_11941354_8_86632f1fd8db6000nex_station_11941354_7_7 2 nex_station_11941354_8_8 1 nex_station_11941354_6_10 2
NekonyancerUnfortunately, we can't connect to one of them because our lines can't cross each other! The green line is blocking it! We'll have to connect to [blue]*this one*[/blue] instead. *1.* Select the Purple station. *2.* Click on [blue]*this triangle.*[/blue]3nex_station_11941354_8_86632f1fd8db6010nex_station_11941354_7_7 2 nex_station_11941354_6_10 13
NekonyancerI know what you're thinking - "With our green line sprawling all over the city, drawing our other lines is going to be difficult!" Well, that's true. [green]But don't worry! There's a silver LINE-ing![/green] :D1nex_station_11941354_7_76632f22a2f60000
NekonyancerEven though the lines can't cross, they can connect to the same stations. Whenever that happens, it creates an *Interchange station.* Each one with *2/3/4* connected lines is worth *2/5/9* points at the end of the game! [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed9c0f6029.54071247.jpg[/img] [green]This player made three 2-line interchange stations, earning 2 points each![/green]2maintitlebar_content6632f22a2f60000
NekonyancerThere's one last way to score: [red]*objectives.*[/red] There will be *two* in each game you play (unless you turn them off). You can hover over them to read how they work. Each one you complete is worth *10 points* at the end of the game!3nex_card_objectives6632f22a2f60000nex_card_objectives 1
NekonyancerNow that you've learned everything about how the game is scored, let's take one last look at our *scorecard.* [red]*These*[/red] are the scores for our individual lines. [blue]*These*[/blue] are for interchange stations. [green]*These*[/green] are for overhead crossings.4nex_scorepad_119413546632f22a2f60000nex_score_11941354_1 1 nex_score_11941354_2 1 nex_score_11941354_3 1 nex_score_11941354_4 1 nex_amount_hub_11941354_2 2 nex_amount_hub_11941354_3 2 nex_amount_hub_11941354_4 2 nex_score_bridge_11941354_1 3 nex_score_bridge_11941354_2 3
NekonyancerFinally, [red]*these*[/red] are for your objectives. After four rounds, your scorecard is totaled up, and [green]whoever has the most points wins![/green]5nex_scorepad_119413546632f22a2f60000nex_score_obj_11941354_1 1 nex_score_obj_11941354_2 1
NekonyancerBefore you go, I should quickly mention some additional modules. You already learned about *Pencil Powers,* but there are also *Special Stations* and *City Gates.* [blue]You can only play with one of these three modules at a time.[/blue]6archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6632f22a2f60000
Nekonyancer*City Gates:* Each [red]*corner station*[/red] has a special bonus associated with it! Each time you connect a line to a corner station, you trigger its bonus! *Special Stations:* Each round, one type of station (like circles, or pentagons) will gain a special ability. Each player can use this ability whenever a card with that specific station comes up.7archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6632f22a2f60000
