Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed955ef198.85365299.jpg[/img] In the year 2075, soon after they took control of the world, cats set their sights on a new frontier - space! [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerEach round, each player will select one brave astrocat. These cats will then embark on an expedition together through space! Once the ship gets far enough, players can choose to *disembark* to score points. The farther they travel before disembarking, the more points they'll get! [red]But beware![/red] If you stay too long and the ship crashes, you won't get to disembark at all!2maintitlebar_content000
Nekonyancer[blue]The game can end in two ways:[/blue] *1.* One player places all 8 of their cats on the board. *OR* *2.* The ship crashes 11 times. [green]Afterward, points are counted up, and whoever has the most points wins![/green]3maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerBefore we go on, it is very important that you *zoom in or out* until your screen looks like this: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed95cc5c13.92383897.jpg[/img]4maintitlebar_content000
NekonyancerBefore starting each expedition, each player must - *in order* - assign one astrocat to the ship. BGA has randomly selected us as the *first player* for the first round, as indicated by the [red]*rocket ship*[/red] next to our name.6player-astronauts-11941354000original-commander 1
NekonyancerEach player starts with an identical supply of eight different cats, each with a different special ability. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed95845282.28384936.jpg[/img] [green]For example, this one has a parachute that will allow it to safely disembark, even if the ship crashes.[/green]7player-astronauts-11941354000
NekonyancerThis is our first voyage, so let's play it safe. *Select the parachute cat!*8astronaut-3010
NekonyancerGreat! This cat is now the *commander* of the ship. You'll see what that en-tails soon. :) [blue]Now the next player in clockwise order will assign a cat.[/blue]1astronaut-3661f0bd79706500
Nekonyancer[green]Okay, everyone has chosen their cats! Our expedition has begun![/green] [red]*This purple ship token*[/red] shows our progress through the galaxy! In order to advance, the *commander* will have to roll *dice,* which represent our ship's fuel. We will start each expedition with exactly [blue]*6 dice.*[/blue]1rocket-marker661f0bfce3a8700rocket-marker 6 dice-results 7
Nekonyancer[green]Well, space-time waits for no cat![/green] *Click on "Roll!" at the top!*3rocket-marker661f0bfce3a8710roll_dice_button 16
NekonyancerTake a look at what we rolled! As you can see, these aren't normal dice. Instead of *1/2/3/4/5/6,* these dice show *afterburners/1/2/2/3/4!*1dice-results661f0c055bba800
NekonyancerUnfortunately, we can't use all the dice we rolled! We can only use the ones that are *flashing yellow.* This is determined by our [red]*ship's position*[/red] on the board.2dice-results661f0c055bba800rocket-marker 1
NekonyancerEach space on the board has 2 or 3 dice next to it, showing which die values can be used to *advance* from that space. If an *afterburner* can be used, the pips in the icon will indicate its numerical value. [green]It can vary from 1-3, depending on the space![/green]5marker-position-1661f0c055bba800
NekonyancerSince we're on [red]*this space,*[/red] only afterburners, 1s, and 2s can be used, and afterburners have a value of 1 (for now).6rocket-marker661f0c055bba800rocket-marker 1
NekonyancerAs the commander, we must now choose which *values* - not individual dice - we will use to propel the ship. For example, if we choose afterburners, we must use *all* the afterburners we rolled.7dice-results661f0c055bba800
NekonyancerBy the way, cat scientists are still working the kinks out of *renewable energy.* *Afterburners* can be used again and again. But if we use dice with any other values, those dice will be [red]consumed[/red].8dice-results661f0c055bba800
Nekonyancer[green]Let's just go with afterburners for now.[/green] *Click on one of the afterburners.* Both of them should now be solid yellow. On the board, you should be able to see an indication of where our ship will end up (Space #2) *Click on "Accept selection" at the top!*9dice-results661f0c055bba810accept_dice_selection_button 16 dice-4 11 dice-6 11
NekonyancerOkay, we used 2 afterburners, each with a value of 1, so [red]our ship advanced by two spaces![/red] And since we only used afterburners, we still have all six of our dice. *Roll again!*1rocket-marker661f0c1fe9d3e10roll_dice_button 16 marker-position-0 15 marker-position-1 15 rocket-marker 6
NekonyancerHmm. We didn't get any afterburners this time, but if we did, they would have a value of 2. *Click on one of the 3s to select all the 3s.* We could use the 1s as well, but that seems like a waste of fuel. Remember, they will all be consumed. *Click on "Accept selection."*1dice-results661f0c279423010dice-1 11 dice-2 11 dice-3 11
Nekonyancer[red]Wow, that was quite a jump![/red] We reached Space #11! Unfortunately, we're down to only [blue]*3 dice.*[/blue]1rocket-marker661f0c2e9440900rocket-marker 6 dice-results 7
NekonyancerEach space after Space #5 is connected to a *planet* or a set of *moons.* Whenever our ship stops on one of these spaces, each player must decide *in order* if they want to *disembark.*2rocket-marker661f0c2e9440900
NekonyancerIf we disembark here, we'll land on a [green]*planet!*[/green] The icons next to it show that whoever has the most cats on it at the end of the game will score [green]4 points.[/green] 2nd place is worth 2 points, and other players will score 1. There is no limit to how many cats can land here.3P1661f0c2e9440900P1 8
NekonyancerAs you might expect, ties for planets are extremely common. The *tiebreaker* is the *order* in which the cats landed. So, if we disembark, we'll be the first one here, which is a big deal!4P1661f0c2e9440900
NekonyancerI think we can try and get farther though. *Click on Pass!*5P1661f0c2e9440910
NekonyancerOkay! [red]Red[/red] is the next player in the ship, so it's her turn to decide if she disembarks or not, followed by green, orange, and brown.1astronaut-39661f0c44cc0e900
NekonyancerRed, green, and orange stayed on the ship, but the brown astrocat disembarked! When it did, it triggered its *special ability.* It destroyed one of our [blue]*remaining dice!*[/blue] What a jerk!1astronaut-39661f0c6f5e50f00dice-results 7
NekonyancerThis makes things dangerous for the cats who are still on the ship. You see, if the ship [red]fails to advance[/red] on a turn - meaning we don't roll any of the usable values - we'll *crash,* and none of us will get to disembark! [red]With only two dice left, crashing is a serious possibility![/red]2astronaut-39661f0c6f5e50f00
Nekonyancer[blue]Wait a second.[/blue] One of the usable values on [red]*this space*[/red] is 1...3rocket-marker661f0c6f5e50f00rocket-marker 6
Nekonyancer[blue]And Orange's cat has a 1 on it![/blue] [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed959c6060.53936848.jpg[/img] After rolling the dice, the *Commander* can *flip* that cat to gain 1 propulsion for the round. As long as we move at least 1 space, we won't crash! *Roll the dice!*4astronaut-32661f0c6f5e50f10roll_dice_button 16
NekonyancerOkay! We rolled a 1, so we would have been safe even without that special cat. Hmm... I want to save our dice though. *Click on the cat to select it!* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed95b463a9.66025739.jpg[/img] *Then click on "Accept selection!"*1dice-6661f0c85eb9ca10
NekonyancerOkay, now we're on Space #12, which has an afterburner (value 2) and a 3. We can't use the orange cat's ability again. [blue]Should we disembark?[/blue]1player_name_11941354661f0ca664dea00
Nekonyancer[blue]Nah. Remember, we have a parachute![/blue] Besides, the Brown player landed on the planet first, so it isn't as valuable for us anymore.2astronaut-18661f0ca664dea00
NekonyancerBut let's say that we disembarked anyway. We obviously wouldn't be able to serve as *Commander* anymore, would we? [red]The Red cat would step up and assume command, as well dice-rolling duties.[/red] But like I said, we're staying on the ship for now. *Click on "Pass" at the top.*3astronaut-14661f0ca664dea10pass_disembarking_button 16
NekonyancerThe [red]Red player[/red] didn't feel too good about our chances. *She disembarked!* Hover over her cat for a second to read about its ability. Oh wait... you can't.1astronaut-14661f0cbd2695000
NekonyancerWell, the cats in player inventories are all labeled. You can read the description on our identical cat. Hmm... it scores double points if it reaches *deep space* - the very end of the board. I guess the red player gave up on that idea. [blue]It only happens once in a blue moon anyway.[/blue] :)2astronaut-6661f0cbd2695000
Nekonyancer[green]Wow, the green player disembarked too![/green] Their cat allows them to disembark as if the rocket were 1 space above or below its current position. Thus, instead of securing 3rd place on the planet for 1 point, they were able to land on this *moon* instead.1astronaut-18661f0cc969cba00
Nekonyancer*Moons* are much simpler than planets. Space #13 has 3 moons connected to it. When the [green]green cat[/green] disembarked, it automatically landed on the *highest* point value moon available.2astronaut-18661f0cc969cba00
NekonyancerPoints from moons are set in stone - or yarn, in this case - so the points have been added to the green player's inventory.3player_board_92151238661f0cc969cba00player_score_92151238 12
NekonyancerEach moon can only accommodate one cat, so the next cat to disembark on Space 13 will land on [red]*this moon*[/red] instead.4M3-1661f0cc969cba00M3-1 6
NekonyancerThere are only two cats left in the ship now. Us, and Orange. *Roll the dice!*1astronaut-32661f0cdc7614710roll_dice_button 16
NekonyancerWow! Two 3s! We have no choice but to use both of them. *Select them. Then click on "Accept selection!"*1dice-6661f0ce1972cf10accept_dice_selection_button 16 dice-5 12 dice-6 12
Nekonyancer*Good!* That last movement should have used all our remaining dice... but we still have one left! That's because the *last* die on any voyage is *infinitely reusable.* [red]Now then, should we disembark?[/red]1dice-1661f0ce7e055300
NekonyancerNo! We have a parachute! *Click on Pass!*2astronaut-3661f0ce7e055310pass_disembarking_button 16
NekonyancerOrange doesn't have a parachute though. They very wisely decided to disembark. We're all alone now. *Roll!*1astronaut-32661f0d104800310roll_dice_button 16
Nekonyancer*Select the die, then accept the selection!*1dice-1661f0d14c79d910accept_dice_selection_button 16 dice-1 12
Nekonyancer*Pass!* Our parachute will save us if we crash!1pass_disembarking_button661f0d18b742610
Nekonyancer*Roll again!*1roll_dice_button661f0d32be96410
NekonyancerAww. We failed to roll a usable value, so our ship crashed. Looks like we'll be landing on that purple planet. *Click on "Land on 19" to disembark.*1dice-1661f0d342665610disembark_button_P3 16
NekonyancerDid you see [red]*this token*[/red] advance? It keeps track of how many times we crashed. If we crash *11* times, the game will end!1failure-token661f0d39367d900failure-token 1 original-commander 1
Nekonyancer[red]Okay that's the end of the first expedition![/red] The [red]*first player marker*[/red] was passed to the next player (Red). Red's cat will be the *Commander* this round, and we will be the last one to assign a cat to the ship.2original-commander661f0d39367d900original-commander 1
NekonyancerLet's send this one. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed96282775.28800839.jpg[/img] *Click on it!*1astronaut-8661f0e3ad11a610
NekonyancerThe cat that Red assigned makes the ship start on [red]*Space #3*[/red] instead of Space #0. The green and orange cats are both capable of scoring *double points.* Planets for the green cat, moons for the orange cat.1astronaut-28661f0e3f42b8a00rocket-marker 1
Nekonyancer[blue]Okay, I think you've seen enough![/blue] There's just one last thing to mention: the goal tiles.2pagemaintitletext661f0e3f42b8a00
NekonyancerThere's just one last thing to cover: [red]*Goal tiles.*[/red] There are four of them available along the left side of your screen. You can hover over them to read the details. The *first* player to satisfy a goal's condition will automatically claim it, scoring [green]5 points![/green]3S1661f0e3f42b8a00public-goal-0 1 public-goal-1 1 public-goal-2 1 public-goal-3 1 S1 14
Nekonyancer[blue]Remember, the game can end in two ways:[/blue] - One player places all eight of their cats on the board. *OR* - The ship crashes 11 times. [green]When the game ends, whoever has the most points wins![/green]4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment661f0e3f42b8a00
Nekonyancer[blue]Okay, that's everything you need to know for your first game![/blue] If you want to make your space adventures even more exciting, you might consider toggling one of the three *variants* - UFO, Exploration, and Secret Missions. [blue]They can be added in any combination![/blue]5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment661f0e3f42b8a00
Nekonyancer*UFO Variant*---A UFO will start the game [red]*here,*[/red] at the top of the map. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed9644b357.36564046.jpg[/img]6marker-position-26661f0e3f42b8a00marker-position-26 1
NekonyancerAt the beginning of each expedition, one *expedition card* will be revealed. [blue]Each card will do three things:[/blue] *- Move the UFO* a few spaces down the track, toward the bottom of the board. *- Dictate how many dice* the expedition will start with. *- Grant extra abilities* to the commander. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed965e26d9.94945104.jpg[/img]7maintitlebar_content661f0e3f42b8a00
NekonyancerIf the ship makes *contact* with the UFO - that is, it ends its movement on the same space as the UFO - the *Commander* receives a [green]secret UFO token,[/green] which is worth points at the end of the game.8maintitlebar_content661f0e3f42b8a00
Nekonyancer*Explorations variant*---Five exploration tokens will be placed on the board. If the rocket ends its movement on a token, it is *immediately* activated. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed967d7034.42202469.jpg[/img]9maintitlebar_content661f0e3f42b8a00
Nekonyancer[blue]Exploration Tokens can...[/blue] - Give the commander *points.* - Give the commander an *extra die* for the round. - *Advance the rocket* by a few spaces. After a token is activated, it is immediately replaced so that there will always be *five* tokens on the board at a time!10maintitlebar_content661f0e3f42b8a00
Nekonyancer*Secret Missions variant*---Each player is dealt 4 Secret Mission tokens, but they can only keep *3.* Each mission requires them to land a cat on a certain space. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed969de1a6.88382462.jpg[/img] Each player earns *2/5/10* points for completing *1/2/3* secret missions.11maintitlebar_content661f0e3f42b8a00
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for MLEM: Space Agency!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! Big thank yous go out to *Reiner Knizia* for designing this game, *Rebel Studio* for publishing, and *przemek88* and *fistachos* for bringing it to BGA! Have fun! :D12maintitlebar_content661f0e3f42b8a00
