Let's learn how to play Maps of Misterra!

Tips:

• You can press the SPACE key to make the tutorial progress instead of using buttons.

• You can use    to minimize tutorial explanations if needed.

Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed39d6cab5.04338486.jpg[/img] Scientific minds were enthused by the discovery of a new island. The more enterprising among them have mounted expeditions to map this new land, dubbed *Misterra.* You are leading one of these expeditions. [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1popin_DlgAssumptionSelection_title000
NekonyancerIn *Maps of Misterra,* you play as a cartographer exploring an island, drawing the surrounding landscape on your Parchment board. The island is revealed as you make your observations.2popin_DlgAssumptionSelection_title000
Nekonyancer[blue]You score *Prestige Points* by:[/blue] • Having your Parchment board match the revealed island. • Respecting your sponsor’s topographic presumptions, even if it means deviating from the reality of the island. • Claiming regions to set up research stations. [green]Whoever has the most points at the end of the game wins![/green]3popin_DlgAssumptionSelection_title000
NekonyancerAt the beginning of the game, each player must select two of four secret *Presumption Cards,* which you should be able to see on your screen now. Each one has a special condition that will grant points based on your *Parchment board.* I know that sounds confusing now, but it will make sense later.4popin_DlgAssumptionSelection_title000
Nekonyancer[blue]Let's go! Misterra awaits![/blue] *1. Minimize this box.* *2. Select the Presumption cards on the far left and right.* *3. Click on "Validate this selection!"*5popin_DlgAssumptionSelection_title010
Nekonyancer[red]Now we're ready to start![/red] Each player's turn is split into two *half-days.* Each half-day is split into [blue]3 steps:[/blue] *- Move.* *- Select a Sketch Card.* *- Map or Claim.* I'll go through these steps with you one at a time.1tokenZone-1_1651a09ccde77500
Nekonyancer[red]First, we move.[/red] Our cartographer isn't on the island yet, so our first move will be selecting which [blue]*beach tile*[/blue] to land on. *Select the second tile from the bottom - the one with a big rock!*2deckmountain651a09ccde77510possibleMove-6_1 7 possibleMove-6_2 7 possibleMove-6_3 7 possibleMove-6_4 7 possibleMove-6_5 7
Nekonyancer[red]Second, we select a Sketch Card.[/red] There are always [blue]*five cards*[/blue] laid out for us at the beginning of a turn. You may have to scroll down to see them. If we don't like any of them, we can take a random card from the top of the deck.1dominoZone651a09dae4c2e00dominoZone 2
NekonyancerEach [blue]*Sketch Card*[/blue] features two terrain spaces. There are four different kinds of terrain: *- Mountains.* (brown) *- Lagoons.* (blue) *- Jungles.* (green) *- Steppes.* (yellow) *Select this Mountain / Lagoon card. Then continue to the next text box.*2domino_98651a09dae4c2e00
Nekonyancer[red]Last, we map or claim.[/red] We'll learn about claiming later. When you map a Sketch Card, you place it onto your *Parchment Board,* which is over here. Cards must be placed so that they cover two spaces on our board.3playerToken-2_4651a09dae4c2e00
NekonyancerAt least half of the card must be placed on a space we can *see.* Our cartographer can only see one space in each orthogonal direction (up/down/left/right), plus the space he/she is standing on. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed3a067bd6.15838320.jpg[/img]4playerToken-4_4651a09dae4c2e00
NekonyancerWe cannot place sketch cards on Beach spaces, so our Cartographer can only see [blue]*one valid space*[/blue] where a sketch card can be placed. *Click on it. Then continue to the next box.*5playerToken-4_4651a09dae4c2e00possibleMove-5_4 2
NekonyancerOkay, we've selected the space that *must* be covered. Now we'll choose how the card is oriented. Fiddle around with the board until it matches this picture: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed3a295cd2.07898312.jpg[/img] *Then click on "Confirm sketch position" at the top!"*6pagemaintitletext651a09dae4c2e10
Nekonyancer*Great!* Our sketch card is locked in. Now take a look at the actual island. [blue]The terrain of the island shifted to match our parchment board![/blue] Note that the image of both tiles is *hazy.* We'll see what that means soon. [red]Yes, hazy. Not misty. No, Maps of Hazeterra would be a terrible name.[/red]1tokenZone-4_4651a0b51cbf9500tokenZone-4_4 2 possibleMove-5_4 2
NekonyancerThat's the end of our first half-day. Now we'll start the second half-day, starting with movement. We can't move onto completely unexplored spaces, but *hazy* spaces are fine. *Move to the hazy mountain space!*2possibleMove-5_4651a0b51cbf9510possibleMove-5_4 16
NekonyancerNext, we have to select a Sketch Card. *Select this Jungle/Mountain card. Then continue to the next box.*1domino_80651a0b61c1f2600
NekonyancerEarlier, I told you that our cartographer can only see one space in each orthogonal direction. But standing on a mountain (even a hazy one) allows us to see *farther!*2possibleMove-5_4651a0b61c1f2600
NekonyancerRemember, only half of a sketch card has to be on a space we can see. So we COULD, for instance, place the next card like this... [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed3a4984e1.39652215.jpg[/img] ... but I want to show you something else.3pagemaintitletext651a0b61c1f2600
NekonyancerPlace the card like this instead, with the mountain on the space we're standing on. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed3a6c2386.49915161.jpg[/img] Unfortunately, this step doesn't work in Tutorial Mode, so click on *"Continue."*4pagemaintitletext651a0b61c1f2600
Nekonyancer*Good!* Take a look at the island again. We used our first sketch card to designate [blue]*this space*[/blue] as a mountain, so a mountain tile was placed here, flipped to its hazy side. When we did the same thing with our second sketch card, the *hazy* mountain was flipped to its *confirmed* side!1tokenZone-5_4651a0b77e1e6e00tokenZone-5_4 2
Nekonyancer[blue]There are two differences between *Hazy* spaces and *Confirmed* spaces:[/blue] *1.* Hazy spaces cannot be *claimed.* We'll learn about claiming on our next turn. *2.* Hazy spaces can be *changed,* which our opponent will now demonstrate.2tokenZone-5_4651a0b77e1e6e00
NekonyancerThey designated [red]*this space*[/red] as a *steppe* on their [blue]*Parchment board,*[/blue] so it changed from a hazy jungle to a hazy steppe!1tokenZone-5_3651a0b94e1c0b00tokenZone-5_3 1 playerBoardMap_92143487 2
NekonyancerThey used their second sketch card to *confirm* the steppiness of this steppe!1tokenZone-5_3651a0ba4784f400tokenZone-5_3 1
NekonyancerBut take another look at their [blue]*Parchment Board.*[/blue] The other half of their second sketch card designated the 4th row / 5th column space as a steppe. That's where our [red]*confirmed mountain*[/red] is. As you can see, the mountain did not change.2playerBoardMap_92143487651a0ba4784f400tokenZone-3_4 9 tokenZone-5_4 1 playermap92143487-2_4 9 playerBoardMap_92143487 2
Nekonyancer[red]Okay, next turn![/red] Hmm... I don't want to move this time. *Click on "Finish my move" at the top!*1passMove651a0ba695ac910
NekonyancerNext, instead of selecting a sketch card and mapping it, let's *claim* an area. Claiming involves placing one of our [red]*three claim markers*[/red] wherever our cartographer is. It must be a confirmed (not hazy) space. At the end of the game, we'll gain [green]2 points[/green] for each tile in that *region,* which refers to all connecting tiles of the same terrain type.1tokenZone-5_4651a0bb0a351000flagToken_133 1 flagToken_134 1 flagToken_135 1
NekonyancerLet's do it! *Click on "Claim this area!"*2claim651a0bb0a351010
Nekonyancer*Good!* This mountain region now belongs to us. No one else can ever claim it, and our [red]*claim marker*[/red] can never be moved or removed. !!! However, it is possible to claim an *unconnected* mountain region and then connect it later. You know... Carcassonne shenanigans. Doing this would nullify all connected claims.1tokenZone-5_4651a0bb3d08c600flagToken_133 1
NekonyancerNext, even though we didn't do any mapping, we must select a sketch card and discard it. *Discard the Lagoon/Lagoon card.*2domino_124651a0bb3d08c610
NekonyancerNow for our second half-day. *Move to this hazy lagoon.*1possibleMove-4_4651a0bb8ccace10possibleMove-4_4 16
NekonyancerAt the top, you'll see that there's a new option available: "Replace a sketch in the display." We have this option because our cartographer is currently in a [blue]*lagoon!*[/blue] If we use it, we'll simply discard one of the available 5 sketch cards and then draw a replacement for it from the deck.1domino_85651a0bbd35b8d00tokenZone-4_4 2
NekonyancerMm, I don't think we need it right now. *Select the Mountain / Steppe card. Place it as shown.* [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed3a8c0216.75927730.jpg[/img] *Then confirm!*2pagemaintitletext651a0bbd35b8d10
Nekonyancer*Great!* The hazy lagoon was replaced with a hazy mountain. If we manage to confirm it, we'll get more points from our [red]*claim marker.*[/red] This also works toward one of our *Presumption Cards.* In a real game, you'll be able to see them [blue]*here,*[/blue] but they're apparently shy in Tutorial Mode.1tokenZone-4_4651a0bce28a1100flagToken_133 1 cardZone 7
NekonyancerI was referring to this card, specifically: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ed3aba7ef9.77910354.jpg[/img] At the end of the game, it will give us points for having connected mountain spaces on our *Parchment Board.* [red]This is often misunderstood![/red] For Presumption cards, it doesn't matter what the island actually looks like! All that matters is what we put on our *Parchment Board!*2maintitlebar_content651a0bce28a1100
NekonyancerNext, I mentioned the special abilities for *Mountains* (see farther) and *Lagoons* (replace a card). I haven't mentioned *Steppes* and *Jungles* yet.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment651a0bce28a1100
Nekonyancer*Steppes* are wide and open, so they're easy to move through. When your cartographer enters a Steppe space, you may immediately move *again.* *Jungles* are hard to see through. If your Cartographer is in one, your vision is reduced to just the space he/she is standing on. That means any sketch card you map that turn must be placed on that one space.4maintitlebar_content651a0bce28a1100
Nekonyancer[green]Okay, that's pretty much it for gameplay![/green] The end of the game is triggered when one of the following conditions is met: • All the spaces on the island contain *confirmed* tiles. • There are no more Sketch Cards available. • One player has covered every space on their Parchment Board.5maintitlebar_content651a0bce28a1100
NekonyancerThe game can only end at the end of a round though, ensuring that every player gets the same number of turns. If you don't know when the round will end, just look for the [red]*Explorer pin,*[/red] which marks the first player. [green]After the game ends, we go to scoring![/green]6firstPlayer651a0bce28a1100firstPlayer 1
NekonyancerFirst, the following are [red]removed[/red] from the island board: • all *hazy* tiles. Only confirmed tiles count for scoring! • any claim markers that *share* their region with a claim marker from another player. No points for split claims!7tokenZone-4_4651a0bce28a1100tokenZone-5_2 13 tokenZone-4_4 13 tokenZone-4_5 13
NekonyancerEach player will then score: • [green]+2 points[/green] for each space on their Parchment Board that matches the Island Board. • [green]+2 points[/green] for each tile in a region they have claimed. • [green]+ X points[/green] for their Presumption cards. • [red]-1 point[/red] for each empty space on their Parchment Board. [blue]Whoever has the most points wins![/blue]8maintitlebar_content651a0bce28a1100
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Maps of Misterra!*[/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send *Nekonyancer* a message! A big thank you goes out to *Galeelox* for bringing this game to BGA! Have fun! :D9maintitlebar_content651a0bce28a1100
