HexTutorialWelcome to Hex. The players, Red and Blue, take turns putting a stone on the board. Red tries to connect the red edges with red stones. Blue tries to connect the blue edges with blue stones. Whoever connects their two edges wins.1hex_menu_toggle001
HexTutorialYou are Red. Click here to place your first stone. After you place the stone, you must click "Confirm" or click on the stone a second time to confirm the placement.3hex_cell_1_4010hex_cell_1_4 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWM2NWQ3MGEzNi41OTU0ODQ2NS5wbmc=/-23/-19
HexTutorialWell done! To make the game fair, the second move is special. Blue can either play normally, or "swap", which means, steal Red's first move. Swapping is only possible in the second move of the game. Press "Continue" to swap. 1hex_menu_toggle6205ec0aaabf601
HexTutorialBlue has swapped. Notice that the stone not only changes colors, but is also reflected about the long diagonal.1hex_menu_toggle6205ec0f86b8c01hex_cell_1_1 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWM2MzlhNDVmMC43MzM5ODk4Ny5wbmc=/-23/-19 hex_cell_2_2 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWM2MzlhNDVmMC43MzM5ODk4Ny5wbmc=/-23/-19 hex_cell_3_3 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWM2MzlhNDVmMC43MzM5ODk4Ny5wbmc=/-23/-19 hex_cell_4_4 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWM2MzlhNDVmMC43MzM5ODk4Ny5wbmc=/-23/-19 hex_cell_5_5 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWM2MzlhNDVmMC43MzM5ODk4Ny5wbmc=/-23/-19 hex_cell_6_6 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWM2MzlhNDVmMC43MzM5ODk4Ny5wbmc=/-23/-19 hex_cell_7_7 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWM2MzlhNDVmMC43MzM5ODk4Ny5wbmc=/-23/-19 hex_cell_8_8 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWM2MzlhNDVmMC43MzM5ODk4Ny5wbmc=/-23/-19 hex_cell_9_9 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWM2MzlhNDVmMC43MzM5ODk4Ny5wbmc=/-23/-19 hex_cell_10_10 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWM2MzlhNDVmMC43MzM5ODk4Ny5wbmc=/-23/-19 hex_cell_11_11 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWM2MzlhNDVmMC43MzM5ODk4Ny5wbmc=/-23/-19
HexTutorialRed's two stones form a pattern called a *bridge*. The point is that although Red's stones don't touch, Red can guarantee to connect them. 2hex_menu_toggle6205ec1af1b2f01hex_cell_6_5 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWM2NjM1MmZhMC41ODU3NTkzMS5wbmc=/-23/-19 hex_cell_7_5 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWM2NjM1MmZhMC41ODU3NTkzMS5wbmc=/-23/-19
HexTutorialBlue has played in on of the empty cells of Red's bridge. Now play in the other to reconnect the bridge! Don't forget to confirm your move.1hex_menu_toggle6205ec1e0818e11
HexTutorialWell done! No matter which of the bridge's two empty cells Blue plays in, Red can play in the other.1hex_menu_toggle6205ec207c05e01
HexTutorialBlue tries to *block* Red from reaching the bottom edge. In Hex, one player always wins (there are no draws). So if you can successfully block your opponent from connecting, you will automatically win!1hex_menu_toggle6205ec22b59bc01
HexTutorialBut Red keeps sidestepping Blue with bridges. 1hex_menu_toggle6205ec2c93dec01
HexTutorialBlue cannot keep letting Red bridge to one side, or else Red will reach the edge. 1hex_menu_toggle6205ec2e7ed2c01
HexTutorialBlue blocks Red again. Note that this time, there is no possibility for Red to bridge anywhere. This situation is called a *bottleneck*. 1hex_menu_toggle6205ec338f96f01
HexTutorialRed keeps pushing and Blue keeps defending. This is called a *ladder*. But if Red keeps pushing the ladder to the end, Blue will connect to the left edge. So Red must come up with another idea. Play in the highlighted cell.1hex_menu_toggle6205ec405f99d10hex_cell_2_10 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWM2NWE2N2E2NC4xMTc1OTI5Ny5wbmc=/-23/-19
HexTutorialWell done! You *pivoted*, i.e., played one ahead of the ladder. See what happens next.1hex_menu_toggle6205ec434d3f301
HexTutorialRed was able to *climb* and connect to one of Red's original stones via two bridges!1hex_menu_toggle6205ec4f023ce01
HexTutorialBlue makes one last attempt to block Red...1hex_menu_toggle6205ec5153e4c01
HexTutorial...but it is too late. Red bridges to the side, and is now connected to the top edge by a pattern called a *ziggurat*. No matter what Blue does next, Red can always connect to the top edge. Since Red is also connected to the bottom edge by a sequence of bridges, Red is sure to win.2hex_menu_toggle6205ec54c963101hex_cell_5_1 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWM2NjlkMDgyNi4zMjUwNDA4OS5wbmc=/-23/-19 hex_cell_5_2 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWM2NjlkMDgyNi4zMjUwNDA4OS5wbmc=/-23/-19 hex_cell_5_3 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWM2NjlkMDgyNi4zMjUwNDA4OS5wbmc=/-23/-19 hex_cell_6_1 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWM2NjlkMDgyNi4zMjUwNDA4OS5wbmc=/-23/-19 hex_cell_6_2 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWM2NjlkMDgyNi4zMjUwNDA4OS5wbmc=/-23/-19 hex_cell_7_1 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWM2NjlkMDgyNi4zMjUwNDA4OS5wbmc=/-23/-19 hex_cell_7_2 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWM2NjlkMDgyNi4zMjUwNDA4OS5wbmc=/-23/-19 hex_cell_8_1 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWM2NjlkMDgyNi4zMjUwNDA4OS5wbmc=/-23/-19
HexTutorialBlue played in Red's ziggurat. Play in the highlighted cell to reconnect.1hex_menu_toggle6205ec5f41f9f11hex_cell_5_2 aHR0cHM6Ly94LmJvYXJkZ2FtZWFyZW5hLm5ldC9kYXRhL3R1dG9yaWFscy9pbWc2Nzg1ZWM2NzlkOTdmMy41NjY3MzA0MS5wbmc=/-23/-19
HexTutorialNicely done! Since it's clear to both players that Red will win, Blue would normally resign at this point. The "resign" button is located in the menu indicated by three dots that this comment is pointing to. Instead of resigning, we'll continue the game to the end. Press "continue" to see how Red completes the connection.1hex_menu_toggle6205ec62c502a00
HexTutorialAlmost done! Place the last stone to win the game!1hex_menu_toggle6205ec8f2dd0d11
HexTutorialCongratulations, you have won! Thanks for following the Hex tutorial.1hex_menu_toggle6205ec93d231c01
