ClutronWelcome to the tutorial for Hardback! In this word game you will be forming words from the cards in your hand to gain money and points. Use that money to purchase new cards and ink in order to form better and longer words, and to score more points. The person with the most points at the end is the winner. ClutronHere is the current player's active cards that they are using to spell their word. The top half of the card indicates the letter, and the bottom half is the benefit you gain by using it in a word. The ☆ symbol is for points, and the ¢ symbol stands for money, with the number next to them indicating how much you get.2cardholder_158000
ClutronYou will notice at the bottom of each card is a [blue]*WILD*[/blue] button. If you click this button you can turn any card into any letter, but in doing so you don't get any money or points from the card like you would normally. But sometimes using the card as a wild is a better choice if it allows you to build a more valuable word.3tut_a0_c154000
ClutronDown here is called the Offer Row. This is where all the cards you can purchase will reside. If you look at the right side of this area you will see different options for sorting these cards either by letter, cost, genre, or how long they have been in the offer row. ClutronThis area up here is your hand of cards. Any cards you don't want to use for your word can be placed here and they won't be considered for scoring the word. Also, when it's not your turn, your cards will appear up here so you can spell out your word ahead of time instead of waiting for your turn to do it.5tut_hand_title000
ClutronLet's go ahead and spell our first word, *TRAIL*. Rearrange the cards by dragging and dropping them, and then click the wild button at the bottom of the *Y* to change it to an *A*. After that click Confirm Word to continue.6cardholder_160010action_0 16
ClutronLook at that, we earned 4¢ for our word. Now we can do one of two things with that money. Buy more cards or purchase *Ink*. Ink is very useful because you use it to draw more cards. More cards mean longer words and more points/money. But spending all our money on ink right now isn't smart, so lets buy a new card instead.2pagemaintitletext61af8b9bf2a6600
ClutronCards down here in the offer row have lots more to them than our starting cards. First lets look at the top left corner, there is the symbol for the genre of the card (the *P* card is in the Adventure genre). The cost of the card in ¢ cents (the *P* costs 4¢), and the points you will gain immediately in ☆ (the *P* earns you 1 point for purchasing it). *Only Adventure genre cards ever have points you gain for purchasing the card.*3cardholder_2261af8b9bf2a6600
ClutronTwo things to note about genres, first is that there are four of them (look to the left). Second is that each genre is better at certain things. ClutronWhile we will go over several of the abilities of cards in this game, not all of them come up every game. To get more information on an ability you can always hover over the cards to get a more detailed explanation.5cardholder_2261af8b9bf2a6600
ClutronNow if you look over here, the *F* is quite different in that the the card is turned sideways, moving the cost, genre, and points info to the bottom left. When a card is oriented like this that means it's a *Timeless Classic*, something which I will go over later.6cardholder_11361af8b9bf2a6600
ClutronNext we will look at the benefits of playing the cards because they differ slightly from the starting cards. The top half is just like the starting cards and tells you what you earn for playing that card in a word. The bottom half, however, shows you the benefit you get for playing at least 2 cards of that genre in a single word.7cardholder_2261af8b9bf2a6600
ClutronSo to use the *P* as an example again, you earn 2 points for playing the card in a word. But, if you play it with another card from the adventure genre in the same word, you get 2 points, plus *ANOTHER* 2 points for the genre bonus. ClutronOver here you will notice that when we bought the card, our deck composition updated to show we have a card from the Adventure genre in our deck. You can hover over it to see how many of each card type is in our deck. ClutronNow that we are in the game some more, let me explain the rest of the player display. The stars are your points, which include those gained from words and the cards you purchased. The black inkwell indicates how many ink you have, and the white the number of removers you have. More on those later.1player_board_448141661afd1e931ed900
ClutronThe left circle is the Literary Awards which awards points for the longest word played. But it only awards points to the first person to play the longest word, so if someone else plays something longer then they steal those points. Hover over the circle to see the points you get based on length of word. If you are playing by 1st edition rules, only one person can earn the 15 points for having a 12 letter word, in the 2nd edition, everyone can earn the 15 points for a 12 letter word, however, the points up until then are first come first served. ClutronThis right circle is for Adverts, which is just buying points with money. If you hover over the circle you will see the points you get for each level of advert from 6¢ to 18¢. You have to purchase them in ascending order and they provide a good way to acquire points if no cards in the offer row interest you. ClutronOur word this round wasn't so great, earning us only 2¢ and 2 points. But a new option appeared at the top, which is to *Flush Offer Row*. This option comes up whenever 4 or more of a single genre are in the offer row, or 4 or more cards cost more than 6¢. In our case their are lots of expensive cards. Go ahead and flush the offer row and see what we get.1cardholder_15761afd546baa1110
ClutronThere are two cards we could buy, and one is in the genre we are collecting, but lets get some *ink* this time. That way we will be able to draw more cards and create longer words. Click the *2 Ink (End Turn)* button at the top to buy the ink (1¢ buys 1 ink). Here we also encounter another point of difference between 1st and 2nd edition rules. In 1st edition rules, nothing else happens and it's the next player's turn. In 2nd edition rules, the oldest offer card is discarded when no cards are purchased, jailed, or flushed. ClutronNow let's draw some extra cards with the ink, since we have two ink we will draw two additional cards (each ink lets you draw one card). In a game you will click the *Draw with Ink* button to draw cards, but for here just click continue.1tut_hand_useInk61afd54f4ff2f00
ClutronBefore we move on let's look at some of the abilities of the cards our opponents are using. These two cards from the Romance genre have different abilities than the ones from the Adventure genre. The *G* card allows you to remove a card from your discard pile from the game to gain 1¢ (the dump ability), and the *Y* allows you to double the money and point benefits of an adjacent card.1cardholder_10361afd57012f1600
ClutronThe yellow number here means that our opponent used the *Y* letter to double it's value. In addition they also removed two cards from their discard pile to give them a total of 5¢ to spend on a new card. Removing starting cards from your deck is good because it makes your better cards come up more often.1cardholder_16661afd8731c4e000
ClutronLet's spell our word. But we have to keep one thing in mind, any cards we drew with ink MUST be used in the word we play. You can remove that requirement with remover, but since we don't have any we have to use the *B* and *C* cards in our word. Let's spell *BUTCHER* with the *N* card as a *U*, and the *P* card as an *H*.1cardholder_15261afd87cb237600
ClutronLook at that, we got 8 points for that word! Also if you look at our player board, we got a literary award for playing a 7 letter word, earning us 5 points! ClutronNotice two things happened that turn, first is that our opponent bought multiple cards. As long as you have the money for it, you can buy as many cards as you want. The second is that this card stayed out. This is one of the timeless classics cards and it will stay on the table until someone who isn't the owner uses it in a word.1cardholder_6461b0d5964ba0500
ClutronWhat good is that you ask? Well it's essentially an extra card for the owner to use on their turn, and you always earn the bonus of the card even if you don't use it in a word. So in this case, every time the owner of this card plays a word, they get the 1¢ regardless of if it's in the word. Same goes for the genre bonus if they use another of the same genre in their word. The only way to get rid of them to for someone who isn't the owner to use it in a word. You don't get any money or points for it's use, but at least you get rid of it. ClutronThe game will continue until someone passes 60 points (or more depending on the table options). When that happens the round will finish and whoever has the most points will be the winner!
