ClutronWelcome to the Hanabi Tutorial! Hanabi is a cooperative game where you are all collectively trying to play out the different color cards in ascending order (1 to 5) to create the most beautiful fireworks display. But what makes that difficult is that you can't see your own cards, only the clues given by other players for your cards. Let's get into it so I can show you how to play.1fireworks_inner001
ClutronDown here is your hand of cards, you will only see the backs of your cards the entire game, so you have to rely on clues from other players to determine which cards to play/discard.2playerhand_88393020000playerhand_88393020 1
ClutronAround the board you can see everyone else's hand of cards with all the information displayed. It's these cards you will be giving clues on in order to give them enough information to play or discard a card.3mistakes_board001playerhand_84483892 8 playerhand_84053330 8 playerhand_89455501 8
ClutronUp here are the clue tokens. Tokens in the white are available to be used to give clues, while tokens in the black are spent. Giving a clue to another play spends a token, and discarding a card regains a token. So you will have to balance playing and discarding so you aren't forced to make a bad play.4clues_avail000
ClutronThis is the discard area, here is where you will find all the cards that have been discarded throughout the game. This provides important information because there are a specific number of each card in each color. For example, if all the red 3's are gone, you know a red 4 or 5 can never be played. In each color: 3 of *#1* 2 of *#2*, *#3*, and *#4* 1 of *#5*5discarded_zone000
ClutronThis is the draw deck, one way the game ends is when this deck is exhausted, everyone gets one more turn and then the game ends. In that case your final score is the sum of the number cards on the board.6deck_pile_item_1000
ClutronAnd last on our tour around the table is the main play area. This is where you will play the number cards out [green]sequentially in ascending order[/green]. *But be careful!* If you play a card out of order, you will trigger a misfire, turning the background of the play area red. Trigger a total of three misfires and the game ends in defeat.7mistakes_board000
ClutronNow let's get to playing!8fireworks_inner001
ClutronIf you see over here, the player gave a clue saying in this player's hand, only this card is a 1. You will also see in the top right that a clue token was spent. Now let's play our turn so you can see what kind of clues can be given.1playertablecard_84483892_item_76_value61674eb492a8500clues_used_item_1 1
ClutronThis player has a lot of 1s, which are needed to start different color stacks. Let's give them that clue. To give a clue you click on a card and it will ask you if you want to give a [red]color clue[/red] or a *number clue*. When giving a clue it has to be about their entire hand, not a single card. So you could say they have two blue cards, or three #1 cards, or one green card, and so on.2playerhand_8945550161674eb492a8500
ClutronLet's give that clue now. Click on this #1 card and the clue options appear. One option is to say two cards are blue, the other is that three cards are #1. Hovering over the two options will raise the cards it's referring to. For this clue, go ahead and give the *number clue*.3playertablecard_89455501_item_8861674eb492a8510playertablecard_89455501_item_88 2
ClutronThe player after us decided to play the 1, a smart move since no other 1s were out yet. Now the green stack is started and so any green 1s now can be safely discarded.1fireworks_inner6168431a1568e00
ClutronUnfortunately, the next player gave a clue that was already given (the 1 cards in the hand of the player to our right). This means a clue token is spent, but no new info is gained. Always remember to think about what clue to give so that *new, useful* information is given.1fireworks_inner616844797c70e01playertablecard_89455501_item_88_cluepanel 1 playertablecard_89455501_item_90_cluepanel 1 playertablecard_89455501_item_92_cluepanel 1
ClutronNice! The player played one of their 1s, starting the blue stack. Now it's our turn again, but we don't have any clues on our cards yet, so let's give out another clue.1fireworks_inner616845710eea000
ClutronLet's tell this player he has two blue cards since they are the next two cards in the blue sequence. Click on this card, and select the [red]color clue[/red] option.2playertablecard_84483892_item_72616845710eea010playertablecard_84483892_item_72 3
ClutronOuch, bad luck. They played the blue 3 card which triggered a misfire! The card gets discarded, no clue token is gained, and also turned 1/3 of the background red. Two more like that and we lose.1mistakes_board6168468c43bce00
ClutronHere you see a clue was given that I hold two 5 cards, this is important because only one five card exists for each color. If I discard those then those colors can never be completed. Completing a color is a good thing, because as a bonus for completing that color, you get a spent clue token back without having to discard a card.1playertablecard_88393020_item_82_value616846bb5204200
ClutronAnd that covers all the rules of how to play Hanabi. As you can see, the game itself is pretty simple, but it's the thinking behind the clue giving and how others interpret those clues that's the meat of the game. How those clues are given and received is called a *convention*.2fireworks_inner616846bb5204201
ClutronStarting out you can play the [green]standard convention[/green], *play left, discard right*. This means that you discard the right most card (the oldest) without a clue when needed, because if that card was important, than a clue would have been given on it. Conversely, if you draw a card and a clue is given on it quickly, then that card is worth keeping to be played later.3fireworks_inner616846bb5204201
ClutronThere are several conventions that can be used, and they are each described in great detail in the Rules Summary section of this game's BGA page. But don't be stressed about remembering all of that in your first games, just enjoy the experience and have fun playing the game!4fireworks_inner616846bb5204201
ClutronOne final note before we end the tutorial, down here you will see an interface options menu. If you click on it you will see different options for how you can have the game displayed. In future games feel free to change things around and see which one fits you best.5hanabi_prefs_button616846bb5204200
ClutronAnd that ends our tutorial! Remember that to win you either need to play out all colors to the number 5, A PERFECT SCORE, or run the deck out without hitting three misfires. When creating your next game you will see lots of options, these are meant to change things up or increase difficulty, you can refer to the Rules Summary section of this game's page for more info. *Have fun playing Hanabi!*6fireworks_inner616846bb5204201
