Nekonyancer[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edb2a567f3.83082080.jpg[/img] The Mandala: the symbol of an ancient and sacred ritual. Colored sand is laid to create a symbolic map of the world, before the pattern is ceremonially destroyed and then rebuilt. [green][tip] This tutorial is best viewed on a computer![/green]1player_name_92143487000
NekonyancerIn Flowers: a Mandala Game, players will take turns playing cards from their hands onto three [green]lotus blossoms,[/green] forming Mandalas. When all six colors are present, the complete Mandala is then destroyed, allowing players with the most cards there to acquire one of the *Flower Tiles* inside!2player_name_92143487000flower0 3 flower1 3 flower2 3
NekonyancerEach Flower Tile is worth Victory Points, but players who acquire matching pairs of tiles will earn even more. [green]When one player acquires three matching pairs of Flower Tiles, the game ends, and whoever has the most points wins![/green]3player_name_92143487000
NekonyancerAs the first player, we started the game with five cards in [red]our hand.[/red] You should be able to see them at the bottom of your screen. Our opponents, nekonekoneko4 and Nekonyancer, received [blue]6 and 7 cards[/blue] respectively for going 2nd and 3rd.4card-27000cards 6 cards-92146574 2 cards-11941354 2
NekonyancerOn our turn, all we have to do is select some cards of a single color and place them all at a single Mandala. If we select and place just [green]one[/green] card, we will immediately draw [green]four more.[/green]5card-27000
Nekonyancer[red]Let's try it![/red] 1. Select the red tile in our hand. 2. Click on the [blue]*square*[/blue] under the top-left Mandala. (You may need to scroll down a little). 3. Click on [blue]*"Place"*[/blue] at the top!6player_name_92143487010customActions 2 f0-1-92143487 7
Nekonyancer[blue]Excellent![/blue] Since that was a single card, we immediately drew 4 more, bringing us to our [red]maximum hand size[/red] (8). If we play another single card next turn, we'll draw a card to replace that one and then [red]stop drawing.[/red]1card-40665019923952700
NekonyancerNote that the card we played was placed on the [blue]underside[/blue] of the Mandala, next to our name. No matter which Mandala they play at, players always see their own cards [blue]under[/blue] it.2f1-3-11941354665019923952701f0-1-92143487 12
NekonyancerNext, try hovering over the [red]"?"[/red] next to our card. You should be able to see all the colors that are currently missing from this Mandala! As you can see, this one is missing purple, lavender, and light blue.3f0-1-92143487665019923952700
NekonyancerYes, that's right - only one card has been played here so far, yet 3 of the 6 colors are already present! [green]This is because the colors of the Flower Tiles[/green] (green and yellow) [green]count as being present![/green]4f1-3-11941354665019923952701
NekonyancerThe [red]"?"[/red] also shows who the Leading Player is and who is in second place. To "lead," we must have played more cards at this Mandala than any other player, AND at least one of those cards must be face up. If you don't want to keep hovering over question marks all game, just look for the [green]Claim Marker,[/green] which will always mark the Leading Player.5standee0665019923952700standee0 3
NekonyancerBeing the Leading player is very important because that player gets to choose one of the Flower Tiles when all the colors are present! Whoever is in second will get the leftover tile.6tile-29665019923952700
NekonyancerThat's enough explaining for now. We played a card, so our turn is over. [green]*nekonekoneko4*[/green] will take their turn now!7card-2665019923952700
NekonyancerLike us, they played a single card at the top-left Mandala. The card was played face up because it's of a color that was not present before. We have now played the same number of cards, but to become the new Leading Player, they had to play [green]more[/green] than us. [red]Tying isn't good enough![/red]1f1-3-11941354665019a926efe01
NekonyancerNext, [blue]Nekonyancer[/blue] played 3 yellow cards here, but since that color was already present, they were flipped [red]face down.[/red] Remember, the Lead Player is the player with the most played cards at a Mandala, but [green]at least 1 of them must be face up![/green]1f1-3-11941354665019ba17f7c01
NekonyancerDespite having more cards than anyone else, [blue]Nekonyancer[/blue] does not have a face up card, so he did not become the new Leading Player. The [green]claim marker[/green] still belongs to us. Feel free to use [red]"?"[/red] to verify this. We are still listed as the Lead, with [green]neko4[/green] in second.2f1-3-11941354665019ba17f7c01standee0 3
NekonyancerIt's our turn again. Let's strengthen our claim by playing as many cards as possible! 1. Select the three lavender cards in our hand. 2. Click on the same [blue]square[/blue] as before. Note the arrow that appeared on the square! It's warning us that our cards will be played face down, but that's fine. We only need 1 to be face up. 3. Click on [blue]"Place"[/blue] at the top!3f1-3-11941354665019ba17f7c10customActions 2 f0-1-92143487 7
Nekonyancer[green]nekonekoneko4[/green] played 2 blue cards, so now the only missing color is purple! Now it's [blue]Nekonyancer's[/blue] turn. If he plays 2 purple cards, he can finish the Mandala as the Leading Player!1f1-3-1194135466501a225e57701
NekonyancerWhew! He played a card on a different Mandala! I guess he didn't have any purple cards! We'd better finish it while we're still in the lead. 1. Select the purple card on the far left. (We only need one.) 2. Place it on the same [blue]square[/blue] as before. 3. Click on [blue]Place[/blue] at the top!1f1-3-1194135466501a4676d8411customActions 2 f0-1-92143487 7
Nekonyancer*Excellent!* The Mandala is complete, and we're the Leading player, so we can choose one of the two Flower Tiles. As you can see, there are several lotus icons on each tile. Each icon represents [green]1 victory point.[/green]1player_name_9214348766501a520f28000
NekonyancerTherefore, the green tile is worth [green]2 points,[/green] and the yellow tile is worth [green]7 points.[/green] Hardly a difficult decision! 1. Select the yellow tile! 2. Click on [blue]"Take light tile!"[/blue]2player_name_9214348766501a520f28010
NekonyancerGood! The 7-point tile is now in our [blue]inventory![/blue] Our [red]score[/red] has been adjusted to reflect this.1tiles-9214348766501a56cad1d00player_score_92143487 1 tiles-92143487 7
NekonyancerNext, look back at the Mandala we completed. Two new flower tiles were placed in the middle, and all the cards around it were cleared away.2f1-3-1194135466501a56cad1d01
NekonyancerThe ones that belonged to us and [green]nekonekoneko4[/green] were discarded here, but [blue]Nekonyancer[/blue] was able to take all his played cards back into his hand, bringing him up to [blue]10 cards![/blue] This is because he did not get to take either of the flower tiles from the Mandala. [green]In this way, players can temporarily exceed the 8-card hand limit![/green]3discard_deckinfo66501a56cad1d00cards-11941354 2
NekonyancerNext, let's go for the top-right Mandala. Play our [green]3 green cards[/green] there!1card-166501aa07645b10
Nekonyancer[blue]Hmm. This is an interesting situation.[/blue] Nekonyancer and nekonekoneko4 are tied for second place at 1 card each. The tiebreaker is the number of face up cards, but they're still tied. If a Mandala is completed when there's a tie for 2nd place, the Lead Player gets to take [red]both[/red] tiles!1maintitlebar_content66501aa81a94a00
NekonyancerIndeed, if you hover over [red]"?",[/red] you'll see that we are listed for both Leading player and Second tile!2standee266501aa81a94a00
Nekonyancer[green]nekonekoneko4[/green] played 2 cards of the last remaining color, finishing the mandala with themselves in second place. Even though we didn't finish it ourselves, we're still the Leading Player, so we can choose a tile first! Choose the yellow one!1player_name_9214348766501abea81d410
Nekonyancer[green]Did you see that?[/green] The 5-point yellow tile went into our inventory, where it automatically combined with our other yellow tile to form a [red]Flower![/red]1tiles-9214348766501ac79f49e00flowers-92143487 1
NekonyancerWhenever two tiles combine, the value of the lower tile is [green]doubled.[/green] In this case, we had a 5-point tile and a 7-point tile, so we now have a total of 7 + (5x2) points, for a total of [green]17![/green]2tiles-9214348766501ac79f49e00player_score_92143487 3
NekonyancerHowever, if one of the tiles is a x3 tile, the value of the other tile is [green]tripled[/green] instead. For example, if [green]nekonekoneko4[/green] acquired this x3 dark red tile (you might have to scroll down to see it, it would automatically combine with the 4-point dark red tile in their hand, giving them [green]12 points.[/green] (4x3)3tile-666501ac79f49e00
Nekonyancer[blue]Okay, I think you've seen enough![/blue] Remember, when one player forms their third flower, the game ends. At that point, all the remaining Mandalas are destroyed. Players who were competing for them still get to take Flower Tiles, even though some colors were still missing. Then BGA counts up the points!4player_name_9214348766501ac79f49e00
NekonyancerHere's a reminder of how scoring works: - Each tile is worth the points shown. - The lower value tile of each complete flower (pair of matching tiles) is doubled. - x3 tiles without matching tiles are worth nothing. Here's an example! [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edb2c99ea6.53640844.jpg[/img] [green]Whoever has the most points wins![/green]5player_name_9214348766501ac79f49e00
NekonyancerFlowers: a Mandala Game is best with 3 or 4 players, but if you want to play with only 2, you can, with the following rule changes: To claim the second tile from a Mandala, you must have at least [blue]half[/blue] as many cards as the Lead Player, and at least one of those cards must be [blue]face up.[/blue] Otherwise, the Lead Player gets both tiles. Cards are never returned to players.6player_name_9214348766501ac79f49e00
Nekonyancer[blue]Thank you for playing through this tutorial for Flowers: a Mandala Game![/blue] If you have any questions or comments about the tutorial, feel free to send Nekonyancer a message! Big thank yous go out to Trevor Benjamin and Brett J. Gilbert for designing this game, Lookout Games for publishing, and firgon for bringing it to BGA.
