leafsnackWelcome to *Codex Naturalis*!
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___i.imgur.com_vEjUrPz.png[/img]
The *Codex Naturalis* was an illuminated manuscript that [green]catalogued the natural world.[/green] It sorted all living beings into *four categories*:
[red]- *Fungi*[/red]
[green]- *Plants*[/green]
[blue]- *Animals*[/blue]
- *>Insects<*
These are the four resources that will be present in this game.1maintitlebar_content000
leafsnack[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___i.imgur.com_HNnGCOS.png[/img]
The amount of resources you have of any given type is determined by how many *icons* of that type are *currently visible* on your personal board.
If the image above was our board, we would have
[red]2 Red Fungi[/red],
[blue]3 Blue Animals[/blue],
& 2 *>*Purple Insects*<*.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
leafsnackThere are two types of cards in Codex Naturalis:
[green]*- Resource cards*[/green] give you resource icons that allow you to play [red]*gold cards*[/red].
[red]*- Gold cards*[/red] give you victory points, but require that you have certain [green]resource icons[/green] visible on your board in order to play them.

leafsnackHere's a close-up on a *gold card*. Its [red]cost[/red] can be found along the [red]bottom edge[/red], while the [blue]victory points[/blue] it grants can be found along the [blue]top[/blue].

This one requires you to have [red]2 Fungi[/red] & 1 *>*Insect*<* before you can play it onto your board.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
leafsnack[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___i.imgur.com_jOeqBU3.png[/img]
This card also has a [blue]*Parchment*[/blue] symbol on it.
These, along with *Quills* and *Ink*, are not resources, but some cards interact with them.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___i.imgur.com_Z9JaUEk.png[/img]
When you play this card onto your board, you will immediately earn *+1vp* for each [blue]Parchment[/blue] icon that is currently visible on your cards.5maintitlebar_content000
leafsnack*Resource cards*, on the other hand, have no cost and can always be played for free. Each resource card will always provide you with, at minimum, one resource of its color.

This card has 2 *>*Insect*<* resources on it.

leafsnackIf you don't want to use the front side of a card, you can always *flip* it over & play it on its backside.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___i.imgur.com_OZfDIv8.png[/img]
The backside of a card provides you w/ one [green]resource icon[/green] of its color, which can be found in the center of the card. Unlike the fronts, each backside also has [blue]all four of its corners open[/blue] for future cards to go on top of.7common-gold-cards-stash_item_1000common-resource-cards-stash_item_1 3 common-gold-cards-stash_item_1 3
leafsnackSpeaking of which, notice how each card has at least one *closed corner*?
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___i.imgur.com_tuXndrX.png[/img]
Whenever you place a card onto your board, each of the corners of the [green]new card[/green] that overlap existing cards must cover [blue]open corners[/blue].
You can cover up resource icons, but you are [red]never[/red] allowed to put another card over a [red]closed corner[/red].8archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
leafsnackAt the [blue]start of the game[/blue], each player is dealt a [green]starting card[/green] and must choose one side of it to use.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___i.imgur.com_qaOqX0Q.png[/img]
Here, we chose the side with all four resource icons on it, although by necessity we'll have to cover some of these up when we play cards in the future.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61f0b6b67835800
leafsnackTwo *Common objective* cards have just been dealt. These won't be scored until the end of the game, but provide specific goals that each player will be evaluated on.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/http___i.imgur.com_ED9SLnk.png[/img]
Our two Common objectives this game are:
*+2vp* for each instance we have of the depicted [blue]pattern of blue cards[/blue]
*+3vp* for each [red]set of Quill+Ink+Parchment icons[/red] we have2common-objectives-container61f0b6b67878600
leafsnackOur [green]starting hand[/green] has been dealt.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___i.imgur.com_I3Cp46F.png[/img]
You will always maintain a hand size of [green]*3 cards*[/green]. Whenever you [blue]play a card[/blue], you will then [green]draw a card[/green] from any of the Resource or Gold card areas.
You may draw from either deck if you don't like the options presented to you.3my-hand-container61f0b6b678d3600
leafsnackFinally, each player is dealt two [blue]*Secret objectives*[/blue], and must choose *one* to keep.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___i.imgur.com_e33aAoC.png[/img]
Secret objectives work the same way as Common objectives, except only you score them. Your opponents won't know your Secret objective until the end of the game, and vice versa.
Select the [green]*green objective card*[/green] and hit "Confirm" to continue.5my-secret-objective-container61f0b6b67a3de10my-secret-objective_item_2 8
leafsnackThe first player to reach >=*20vp* triggers the [green]*end of the game*[/green]. The rest of the round will finish out as normal, then each player will get [blue]one final turn[/blue] to play their last card.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___i.imgur.com_ED9SLnk.png[/img]
The first round has begun, and we're up first. Play our [green]green resource card[/green] so that it covers up the [red]bottom-right corner[/red].1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61f0b6ce24b8d10placement_1_-1 6 my-hand_item_2 1
leafsnackGreat job! Since we just played a card, now we have to draw one to replenish our hand.
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___i.imgur.com_o02GPaG.png[/img]
We can pick from any of the revealed cards or 2 decks. It's too early to afford the *gold cards*, so we should go for a [green]*resource card*[/red] instead.
We need more [blue]animals[/blue] since we just covered up our only icon. Choose the *[blue]blue card[/blue].*1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61f0b6e79b08610common-resource-cards_item_2 7
leafsnackYou can see what your opponent's board looks like by [blue]*clicking the keyhole button*[/blue] next to their name.

[red]Catherine[/red] just played a purple resource card, and is now choosing which card to draw to [red]her[/red] hand.

leafsnackTurn 2! We need to keep collecting resources, and if we can snag that new [blue]Animal resource card[/blue] that just showed up, we'll be two-thirds of the way to the *pattern* on the *Common objective*.
Play the [blue]blue[/blue] card in your hand onto the [red]highlighted space[/red] on your board.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61f0b722b1ead10placement_0_-2 6 my-hand_item_4 1
leafsnackNow let's lock down the other [blue]animal resource card[/blue].1common-resource-cards_item_461f0b7342c0cf10common-resource-cards_item_4 6
leafsnackPerfect. Now place our new [blue]animal resource card[/blue] so that it begins to form the shape shown in the [green]Common objective[/green].1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61f0b75742d7710my-hand_item_5 6 common-objectives_item_1 3
leafsnackGreat job!
We need more [blue]Animals[/blue], since we still only have 1 icon and there are a ton of *gold cards* in the display that have [blue]blue[/blue] in their cost.
*Draw* the [green]resource card[/green] with an [blue]animal resource[/blue] on it.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61f0b7699b28f10common-resource-cards_item_5 6
leafsnackYou can play any card in your hand on its *backside*, even *gold cards*. Click [blue]"Flip hand cards"[/blue] and play our [red]fungi gold card[/blue] on its back.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61f0b7852245b10placement_-2_-2 6 my-hand_item_3 1
leafsnackBefore we let you go, *flip over* the [blue]animal resource card[/blue] in your hand and complete the pattern shown on the [green]*Common objective*[/green].1my-hand_item_361f0b7c3667a610my-hand_item_3 6
leafsnackGreat work. We've now played cards worth *+2vp*,
and have completed our first instance of the
[green]Common objective[/green].
[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/https___i.imgur.com_tKRxfhB.png[/img]
You will be scored on each [green]*Common objective*[/green] however many times that pattern/set shows up on your cards. So if you had 3 Quills, 3 Ink, and 3 Parchment, that objective would grant you *+9vp* at the end of the game.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment61f0b7d00d6b900
leafsnackThe game ends when a player reaches [green]*+20vp*[/green], at which point objectives will be scored.
